President Obama delivers opening remarks at today's Cabinet meeting: vine.co/v/h1Y39TE55YT— The Cabinet (@Cabinet) September 12, 2013
I watched some nonsense show last night on the Discovery Channel called “The President’s Gatekeepers”. They announced it as “an inside look at Chiefs of Staff from Roosevelt to Obama…”. Well – it turned out to be a bunch of right wing propaganda, rewriting history with almost every spoken word. Half the show was about the Bush reactions to 9/11. Cheney and Rumsfeld were in almost every clip. I ended up with high blood pressure and wondering how this country is still standing after being in the control of so many corrupt and evil men.
In the intro clips, they kept showing Rahm Emmanuel, Jack Lew and Dennis McDonough, as though they were going to offer a fair portrayal of many Presidents. Well, it wasn’t. Cheney and Rumsfeld, putting Reagan on a pedestal, excusing Bush’s bad decisions, and portraying Bill Clinton as a bad-tempered genius who couldn’t make a decision to save his life. I have to admit, I fast forwarded through half of it, because all I could see what Cheney and Rumsfeld all over my screen, so there might have been a couple of seconds of decent footage. But be warned – if you have high blood pressure, or are fed up to ^here^ with media nonsense – then avoid this show.
I just saw them talking about the show today and it peaked my interest due to the clips of the Obama Admin they aired. They’re going to repeat Part 1 tonight and then air Part 2 (which is the final part). So are you recommending that I avoid the show?
I suspect that the Obama Admin clips were to lure people in, who thought they were going to watch an historical show about all admins, including President Obama. The bulk (and I mean 60-70%) was Dick Cheney, Bob Rumsfeld, Reagan anectodes from his former COS, and rewriting history. I literally fast forwarded through half the show, and all I saw during that time was Dick Cheney and Rumsfeld and Bush. They had a segment on Bush Senior giving out awards for people snoozing on the job – and Cheney told some apparently funny anecdote about his time of winning the award – and I couldn’t help but scream at the TV that he was sleeping on the job 12 years ago today (this was last night, anniversary of 9/11).
I won’t say don’t watch it, if you have the stomach for it. I will say – be warned that it’s not what you expect. Rahm’s contributions were pretty much limited to repeatedly saying how hard it was to be COS, how the decisions were tough ones, and how he wouldn’t have traded the experience for anything.
I tried to stay up to watch this show and fell asleep…..I am now glad I missed it and won’t bother to see it if re-played.
I threw a couple of socks at the TV at one point…

As I posted on the bottom of the last thread (my reserved spot), yesterday the Pope said no reason why “non-believers” can’t “get into heaven,” as long as they are following their conscience. And about the gay community, he’s said, “Who am I to judge?” Plus, now he’s gonna drive himself around Vatican City in a mini popemobile. Ha! I threw in that last part, ’cause it’s fun.
Some of the old entrenched cardinals and bishops have that deer-in-the-headlight look.
Really, what were the cardinals thinking?
It’s like how the entrenched politicians in D.C. look at President Obama … they had NO IDEA how he was going to change our world!
The difference is that once the cardinals voted in the Pope, they now can’t do anything but go along with all of his good ideas.
I could see the Pope asking a visiting President Obama, “Wanna drive my car around Vatican City?” And I laugh.
Now, LL, if Pope Francis would just lighten up on the position of women in the church, he would truly be hitting on all cylinders and would be the most transformational pope of all time. The church would grow and flourish if women could serve as parish priests.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. government posted a narrower budget deficit in August compared with a year ago, keeping the annual gap on track to be the smallest in five years.
The Treasury Department says the deficit in August was $147.9 billion, down from $191 billion in August 2012. That brings the budget gap to $755 billion for the first 11 months of the budget year, down 35 percent from nearly $1.2 trillion a year earlier.
The government is likely to post a surplus in September, lowering the full-year deficit to $642 billion, the Congressional Budget Office forecasts. That would be the first deficit below $1 trillion in five years.

Albert Brooks channeling President Obama’s response to the Putin Op-ed
Mr. Putin, we put a man on the moon and you barely got a monkey home safely. We invented the computer, and you invented the way to steal it. Your country is filled with our fast food businesses and yet there is not one Russian take out place in the whole United States.
You are known for Siberia, we are known for Big Sur. We make Cadillacs and Lincolns and God knows what you call those little square deathtraps. It’s one thing to put down exceptionalism, but before you do that, you at least have to produce one Broadway show, or make one commercial airliner, or invent one type of salad.
Having said that, your people are wonderful and I know that you care about them deeply, except, of course, for the gay ones. As a matter of fact, you care about them so much that you hate to see them argue, especially with you, so you graciously offer them the solace of prison.
In any case, I enjoyed your editorial and I am very impressed that it was printed in The New York Times. If only there was a newspaper in your country that would print this.
My very best wishes,
I just wish they didn’t sign the President’s name to it.
I agree, Theo. PBO has enough to do without those who will wish to distort this against him. I feel the entire situation is still too delicate to be spoofing with it. I pray it does not cause problems for him. Bless him.
This is nonsense. He could have written the piece without attaching Pres. Obama’s name. Pres. Obama is not a Piñata that should be hit at by every Tom, Dick, and Harry. It’s insulting.

The best progressive radio ever was Stephanie Miller this morning with Melissa Fitzgerald, an actress (used to be on West Wing), activist for human rights, great Democrat, PBO supporter. She dismantled the RW and any RWNJ callers. She should have her own show.
Can imagine if they replaced Hayes with Melissa Fitzgerald, who could surpass him intellectually and has actually, you know, had first hand experience with the horrors going on in the world. The best hour of progressive radio I’ve ever heard. She may have been on longer, I was on my way to see my RW accountant to do my taxes.
After I decompress (read: have a stiff drink) I will regale you with her take on ‘Obamacare’. It was hi-larious! And her conclusions will make my TOD family smile like cheshire cats. I certainly did.
I wish Stephanie could find another network to pick up her show. I guess Gore had his reasons, but at least Current TV didn’t have to answer to media corporations. I didn’t like all the shows, but I did enjoy Stephanie most of the time.
Allegedly she is going to have another TV outlet but I’m starting to get concerned because they’ve been promising an announcement for months now.
Melissa Fitzgerald was really phenomenal. If we could create our Dream pragmatic progressive voice for media, she was it. I love Stephanie and I love the humor, but Melissa was factual, articulate, sharp, passionate, clear. And she has the most soothing voice. She was fantastic.
Yep. I’ve heard Melissa on Stephanie’s show. She’s very, very good. Therefore, I won’t look to see her on MSNBC anytime soon.
She’s always good but she was particularly fantastic today. she took apart the nut job callers like a radio pro. She should be in the TOD family – everything she said, we believe.
Except that she loves Chris Matthews – but not what he says, just his passion.
I agree. Thankfully, I was in the car and got to hear most of the hour she was on. FANTABULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m glad you concur!
YORK, Pa. — Good thing they weren’t crammed in a clown car.
Pennsylvania police said a minivan with two clowns inside crashed outside the York Fair around 6 p.m. Wednesday when the driver missed the entrance and collided with an SUV while making a U-turn.
The minivan was also pulling a trailer with a clown car.
Police said the driver, 83-year-old James Billingsley of York, also known as “Dimples the Clown,” suffered a minor bump on the head. His passenger clown, 77-year-old Norman Clouser of York, was unhurt.
Police said “Dimples” was wearing clown shoes but the oversized footwear apparently didn’t play a role in the crash.
West York Borough police Sgt. Brad Thomas said both vehicles had to be towed. He didn’t know if the clowns ever made it to the fair.

With the news that over the last four years “income for the 1 percent grew by 31.4 percent, while everyone else only saw it grow by 0.4 percent,” I hope Mr. de Blasio is an unapologetic tax-the-fuck-out-of-the-rich liberal, but I don’t think things will work out that way.
OT, but haha. My 4 yr. old grandson just called to tell me about his 1st day at a new preschool. He was riding a bus for the first time, which we were all wondering about how that would go over. When I asked about the bus, he said it was “good” but that he “wobbled” on the way to school. The bus has seat belts, but he’s used to being locked into a car seat and thus the feeling of being “wobbled”. I of course laughed at the word “wobbled”, and so he repeated it into infinity. “I wobbled!” hahahaha! “I wobbled!” He loves getting a laugh response. You might want to also know that he has a new friend named Arthur. Arthur was only described as having “brownish-blackish” hair. LL might be happy to know that he was real proud of checking out a book at the library. He chose “Diggers”, a book about big earth-moving equipment, a non-shocking selection, said his mom—–but still…..a book. As to the snacks—–apple slices got a thumbs up, “booberries” got a thumbs down. Milk was good. And now you’re all caught up on Braden’s 1st day of preschool. So far, so good.
Very nice report, Dotster. Braden’s off to a good, positive start, wobbling notwithstanding! Sounds like he has a good sense of humour.
Sounds like a lovely day! Thanks for sharing. Last week, I talked to my 4 year old nephew about his first day at preschool. He was so thrilled because he peeled his banana all by himself. That was his highlight of the day. I laughed so much. I am so sad because my brother and his family moved to Florida this summer and I had to hear the story via FaceTime. It’s nice but I wish I had them here with me in MD.

“New rifle mimics machine gun’s rapid fire — and it’s legal”
Machine guns are illegal in the U.S. for most people, but one small company has found a way around that.
Slide Fire, based in Moran, Texas, plans to sell a semiautomatic rifle that mimics the rapid fire of a machine gun and is also fed bullets from a belt, which provides a huge capacity for ammunition — potentially thousands of rounds.
“It sprays like a fire hose,” said Renner. “We recommend no more than 30 rounds on the belt, but one person could make it as big as they want.”
Can that be legal?
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives says yes, since it’s still technically a semiautomatic.
Talk about IRONY >>> “Moran, Texas”
HOW WILL WE KNOW THE HOUSE GOP IS TRULY INTERESTED IN PASSING IMMIGRATION REFORM? WHEN THEY BLOW PAST GOODLATTE AND WORK WITH DEMOCRATS
According to Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice:
The Bob Goodlatte approach is a road to nowhere. Of the measures he has ushered through his Judiciary Committee, all are partisan and piecemeal, and at least one is a poison pill. The road to immigration reform requires House leaders to blow past Goodlatte and embrace a bipartisan approach. In fact, we’ll know House Republican leaders are serious about passing immigration reform when they get serious about working with Democrats on all aspects of immigration reform, including the central issue, which is what to do about the 11 million undocumented immigrants settled in America.
The latest from our hater folks here in the great state of Tennessee. SPEAKER Ron Ramsey tweeted Wednesday “As the President seeks to ally w/Al-Qaeda in the civil war in Syria, we must alwlays remember who attacked us on our soil 12 yrs. ago.” Our Dem chair and many others were quick to respond but he put out a statement today that he stands by what he said. Haters gonna hate. Makes me so d—- angry and also hurts so much on behalf of our wonderful President.
These devils are getting on my last nerve. Nothing is sacred and EVERYTHING is partisan. I hope democrats remember this and the next attack that happens under a Republican will result in impeachment proceedings. The MSM painted anyone who blamed GWB for 9/11 as “unAmerican” or “unpatriotic”. Too bad the country is only supposed to rally behind Republican presidents in times of war or national tragedy. The unmitigated gall of smearing the man who got Bin Laden as being an Al-Qaeda sympathizer is beyond belief and straight out of the Karl Rove playbook. Ron Ramsey and all he holds dear can go straight to Hell.
I really wish these GOP bigots would tone down their anti-Muslim rage.
They are gleefully appealing to the least educated who truly believe that the President is a “Muslim Arab.”
I just don’t understand how people can believe that every single person of *whatever group* is good, bad or something else.
I hate that GOP politicians raise money by encouraging hate and fear. That helps no one, especially Americans.
“I just don’t understand how people can believe that every single person of *whatever group* is good, bad or something else”
It is easier than thinking. Also if you are in one of the “favored” groups, everything you do is OK. White people who get food stamps or receive welfare benefits aren’t “lazy moochers” like the black and brown people who depend on the same government programs, just because they are white. Its the same mentality that produces gems like “keep your goverment hands away from my Medicare”. Their self-worth is so shallow that they need to demean other races to make themselves feel adequate. They hate PBO because he proves everyday that their racist stereotypes are wrong. They are in a panic because their whole bigoted worldview is being exposed as a sham.

Removing Syria’s chemical weapons easier said than done
by Michael Pizzi
September 11, 2013 4:00PM ET
Experts say destroying Syria’s chemical arsenal is technically possible, but a logistical and political nightmareAs the wrangling begins over a United Nations Security Council resolution that would place Syria’s chemical weapons under international control, experts say that removing or destroying the government’s considerable arsenal would be a logistical and political nightmare — and might require a protracted cease-fire in Syria’s civil war. But it can be done.
“Technically, it’s all possible,” said Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, a former commanding officer at the United Kingdom’s Joint Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Regiment, and current chief operating officer of chemical weapons consultancy SecureBio.
De Bretton-Gordon cited the case of Iraq, where a portion of Saddam Hussein’s chemical weapons stocks were destroyed in the mid-1990s. A slow process in the best circumstances, tracking down and destroying chemical weapons stockpiles took years in Iraq.
The scale of the challenge is far larger in Syria, which is in the throes of a full-blown civil war.
“It’s big. He has one of the biggest chemical weapons programs in the region and even in the world,” said Rothbacher, who trained members of the team that just returned from a mission to Syria. The U.N. team of inspectors was deployed to determine whether chemical weapons had in fact been used in a suspected Aug. 21 attack that killed an estimated 1,429 people in the Damascus suburbs.
The Syrian government vehemently denies responsibility for the attack.
Experts say that there are two options for disposing of neurotoxic agents such as sarin: relocate them to a neighboring country for gradual degradation, or destroy them on site. Either process would be lengthy and complicated.
