How “Obama Derangement Syndrome” is unlike that of Bush

When we accuse some right-winger of having “Obama Derangement Syndrome”, he will just scoff and point out that the Left was consumed with “Bush Derangement Syndrome” from 2001-2009. And to a certain extent, they’d be somewhat correct. For myself, I could only grudgingly applaud Mr. Bush for such things as AIDS initiatives for Africa, and his support for immigration reform.

But here’s the difference: I could acknowledge his (few) successes. For a Republican, reaching out to Africa and immigrants were things which went against the base, and required a certain bravery. The thing is, however, that the rest of his policies were so disastrous for the country that his few successes were dwarfed by them. From squandering record surpluses to crashing the economy to getting us mired in two mismanaged wars, his administration was a catalog of failure. It was already heading toward failure before 9/11; there was no doubt that he’d be a one term president. When the attacks occurred, he was able to refashion himself as a “war president”—a war he proceeded to prosecute in the most incompetent manner, sullying the nation’s ideals and honor. There was “Bush Derangement Syndrome” because everything he touched turned to lead. He didn’t kill bin Laden; he trapped us in disastrous wars; he oversaw a mass transfer of wealth to the already wealthy. So, while I agree that in some things he did well, they were drowned by his cacophony of failure.

Now let us turn to President Obama’s record. It began by him being the first African American elected president. He was able to pass a stimulus package which stanched the bleeding of the Great Recession. The US economy runs on two pillars: real estate and automobile manufacturing; real estate was on its knees; he saved the auto industry, without which the whole world would have sunk into a depression. He then fulfilled the great Democratic dream, passing comprehensive health reform, which would bring affordable health care to nearly every American. That achievement led to the GOP takeover of the House in 2010 in backlash, because some on the Left had a snit (more on that later). With the GOP in control of one house, he brilliantly conducted actions which stymied their most cherished goals, and preserved his priorities in the budget. Then against all the caterwauling of the media, he won a second term, in a convincing fashion. Then just this weekend, rattling a saber which opponents know he will use, he achieved a diplomatic resolution to Syria’s chemical weapon use, making the Autocrat of All the Russias climb down from his recalcitrant stance. And, of course, we can’t forget his other great triumph, along with Obamacare: healing that great wound in the American psyche by finally bringing Osama bin Laden to justice.

If you stack Obama’s record against Bush’s, an impartial observer would agree that the current president’s is much more impressive and transformative than that of the previous one’s.

But here is where ODS is markedly different that BDS: not one right winger will acknowledge that Obama has done anything correctly. They will either say that success is actually failure for the flag, mom, and apple pie; or, if it they admit that a particular action was successful, they will attribute that success to luck, or to the work of others under Obama, or, as in the case of Syria, to the peace-loving nature of a Russian strongman.

Obama Derangement Syndrome is different because it’s all-consuming. Nothing that he does can be credited. Everything he does must be deligitimized. He has to be shown as an empty suit, a buffoon, a clown, an incompetent, someone good at entertaining with speeches but completely out of his depth at governing. The more success he racks up, the greater the volume of this banshee wailing. The Republican Party and the Right in general have ceased standing for anything positive; they merely exist to oppose Obama in everything, no matter the damage it will do to the state. The Right’s only purpose is to conduct a scorched-earth campaign against the president.

ODS is different for another, more pernicious reason. Bush never had to face a rebellion on the Right. It marched in lockstep with whatever he did, no matter how muddleheaded. To them he was a Demosthenes, no matter how warped his words came out. It knew Bush was its man, and circled the wagons around him as his presidency crumbled with the electorate at large. But from even before his inauguration, Obama has had to face an insurgency to his left. This is a left which hasn’t had power in this country to any great degree; it’s a Left which exists to live in opposition; it’s a Left which has as maximalist a position as the Right, where anyone who doesn’t adhere strictly to every ideological tenet is not only suspect, but “not a real liberal”, a “centrist”, a “third wayer”. It’s a Left represented heavily in the blogosphere, and to a small extent in the Democratic caucus in Congress. It’s a Left which believes it elected Obama, and demands that he hew to its precepts. When he doesn’t—when he often strikes out on his own path towards what he thinks is best for the country—it turns apoplectic, calling him the kinds of names one thinks is the purview of the Right. Because Obamacare wasn’t single payer, it encouraged Democrats to stay home in 2010, handing the House to the GOP. Because Bush lied us into war in Iraq, it immediately thinks that Obama is doing the same with Syria, and will take the word of a Russian leader who passes laws stigmatizing gays and who jails journalists to its own president, who has spent the entire Syrian civil war keeping the US out of it. It’s a Left so unknowledgeable of the ways in which politics work that it believes if it screeches loudly enough the nation will swell behind it. It is a Left as distrustful and condescending towards the black guy in the White House as is the Right.

Obama Derangement Syndrome is different because almost the entire political and media classes suffer from it. People who should be political adversaries find common cause in hating Obama. Obama is the most liberal president since Franklin Roosevelt, and is succeeding at transforming the country, which infuriates the Right. And he is not the Left’s Magic Negro, which sends it into fits. When he called out both the Right and the Left in his Syria address, he displayed a polite contempt for both extremes.

In the end, Obama upends the grifts on both sides. He puts paid to the Right’s notion that Democrats are incompetent, corrupt, and have no love of country. The Left would rather be in opposition and keep the money rolling in; it doesn’t know what to do with power, so when Obama works on fixing the things the Left screeches about, he takes away their raison d’etre. He is a threat to the careful political dance which has obtained in DC since the days of Ronald Reagan. It’s the job of his supporters, and of any American who wants to see a country which is more just and doesn’t lurch from crisis to crisis, to make sure that he continues to succeed.

LL, Thank you for the new post. Good sharing of ideas as usual. I am almost tempted to tell you when you refer to Bush’s ‘few’ successes, you are being hyperbolic. You could easily and truthfully write the word TWO, as ‘few’ sounds almost numerous, implying more than two to some of us. ;) ;)

LL “threat to the careful political dance” ding ding ding ding give that man the prize. That is the core of ODS. Threat to established norms and cash flow to those who benefit from status quo.
Of course cherry on top of their hysteria is the color of the President’s skin.
I hate them all. Sorry for vehemence but I do. Greedy and selfish m-fs who deserve every comeuppance our President and his splendid administration can deal out to them.

Comfort yourself with the reality that, as evil and vile as they are, they will never take away President Obama from the history books. He’s locked in there. They won’t even be a footnote. And in three plus short years, he’ll be out of their grasp for good! He’s a successful man, in every sense of the word. They are just pathetic.

right there with you, Vicki!….I try so hard not to let hate enter my life…it takes more energy to hate than to love is my motto…but, damn it’s so hard so am trying to think of other words….abhor, detest, loathe, despise….help me here….what are other words to use instead of hate….b/c they are so full of hate….I don’t want to be like them.

Kathryn, I believe “pity” is the best word, because while it portrays a strong emotion of those that you listed, it also shows that you have compassion towards those that have such obvious issues as to be embroiled in their own bitterness/hatred/anger/sadness. These people have no one to be angry at but themselves. They allowed our media, voters, politicians to become complacent, and it’s easier to blame everyone else (read: POTUS) than to take a deep look inward and see who is truly responsible for their lot in life.
I hope many of them take time for a lot of soul-searching, but I have little faith they are interested in anything but whining and moaning. This is why they should be pitied, because they are pathetic.
        Just my $.02

    Good essay, LL.

It’s time for the media to exhibit some (small) degree of self-awareness.

They do their best to ignore what is really going on within the GOP:

    Examples:

    1) North Carolina

    2) Don’t like dKos’ “American Taliban” analogy, but it’s hard to argue with this:

And for good measure, how’s the Professional Left doing today?

re: our despicable and unrepentant media.

I think Desertflower hit the nail on the head a couple of threads ago:

“Obama has once again triumphed at home and abroad.

I dare say that this is why they hate this man so much. He always leaves them looking like the simple fools they are. They get out witted, out played and out lasted. PBO is a survivor and long term thinker. These morons STILL haven’t figured that out after 5 years. Fools, made to look more foolish every single day.”

Since most of the MSM are white elite from Ivy League colleges, you can see that they always thought of themselves as the smartest kid in class.

They were delighted with the 2008 storyline (first Black President, oh boy!). But the reality of always being wrong has worn thin, and now it’s personal. They can’t help themselves.

They really need an intervention, but their editors are just as coddled and WASPY (including Jewish reporters here too) that they don’t see the problem (other than they’re always wrong).

      September 14, 2013 at 6:29 pm

I get what you’re sayin’, but I don’t want to condemn the whole “white elite from Ivy League colleges” population. They’re a big reason why we always see that big glob of blue in the Northeastern states at election time—-Dems win in the areas with the best universities—-where we have the most educated populations. I would separate the ornery few in the media from the huge majority of those grads who have always supported Barack Obama and still do.

      • September 14, 2013 at 6:44 pm

My point is that there are thousands of colleges and universities in the USA.

The majority of the MSM for print and “national newspapers” are Ivy Leaguers.

My point is that there are thousands of colleges to choose from, but it’s an old-boy network that hires from whichever Ivy League school the editor hails from.

I’m not anit-college. In fact, I love the smaller liberal arts colleges.

But MSM needs diversity of POV whether it’s educational, geographic and ethnic diversity.

I agree with the threat to their ego and inflated self-regard accounts for some of the ODS.
The more basic reason is the threat to their income and status that POTUS represents, as LL has pointed out so spectacularly.

  7. September 14, 2013 at 5:05 pm

“It’s the job of his supporters, and of any American who wants to see a country which is more just and doesn’t lurch from crisis to crisis, to make sure that he continues to succeed.”

True, LL. It’s up to us to do just that. Thank you.

  8. September 14, 2013 at 5:09 pm

In the end, Obama upends the grifts on both sides.

I loved the entire piece, but this is the heart of the matter for the left with ODS…

to a one, President Barack Obama put a shutdown on their ability to mooch off of their whining.

  9. September 14, 2013 at 5:11 pm

It is a Left as distrustful and condescending towards the black guy in the White House as is the Right. And he is not the Left’s Magic Negro, which sends it into fits..

    *****************************
    Awsome Assessment….

I would add the PL thinks that PBO owes them something…

the Media and the Rep/RW like to say that the PL is the base of the President…they are wrong…the OBAMA Coalition is the base of the President…

to add a point.. This coalition is non-transferrable…it is not an automatic and the Dem Part does not just inherit this coalition…it has to earn it…

I agree, trekkiewife, I am not a Bill Press fan anymore. I was a huge fan of his, bought all his books, listened to his show etc. but when he went off on AG Holder and PBO I quite listening. I tried to listen again to the last part of his show and he was talking about how the President fell into the negotiations. I am sorry Ggail, but I will no longer listen to him. I am tired of these Clintionists not giving him any credit. Now the only radio show I listen to is Stephanie Miller and I only watch Rev Al. Everyone else has gone over the deep end in their telling Obama what to do. Everyone knows better than Obama.

  11. September 14, 2013 at 5:15 pm

What makes Obama Derangement Syndrome so acute on the right, is that they will give him credit for NOTHING

Not even ascending to the Presidency of the United States.

It’s their pettiness in not even acknowledging the PERSONAL accomplishments of President Barack Obama which makes non-White people give the GOP the side eye.

Barack Obama was born to a teenaged mother. By the age of 2, his father had split from the family. His mother worked, and eventually left Barack Obama to be raised by her parents for part of the time he was growing up.

Barack Obama ascended in this country THROUGH EDUCATION.

THROUGH EDUCATION, he lifted himself up, taking advantage of educational OPPORTUNITIES.

EVERY campaign he ever began, he began with NOTHING.

No network. No party support. NADA.

He built his election apparatus from the ground up, beginning when he was an Illinois State Senator.

He and Michelle Obama are the EPITOME of the American Dream…

and everything the GOP says when they point to Black people and lecture ‘ why can’t you do better?’

Yet, they never apply their bootstrap bullshyt to The First Couple.

They don’t give him credit for being a good husband and father – that’s how fucking petty those lunatics are.

I’ve said it before and will repeat it.

They believe that non-White folks have lived on Mars instead of America for the previous 43 White Presidents, and that we don’t see the fundamental disrespect shown this President AND HIS ENTIRE FAMILY.

They think it goes over our heads.

    No. It doesn’t.

Spot on theo67. Petty jealousies that get in their way of truly appreciating an exceptional man and his exceptional wife. As someone said previously (don’t remember who, it might have even been you), this president is psychologically one of the most well-balanced people that has ever served our country. I believe he might be the most psychologically balanced human being ever. :)

rikyrah this is not just a problem on the right – which makes it even more disturbing. For example, Chris Hayes (a prime time host on MSNBC), who, just a week ago, was excitedly tweeting nonstop on the Syria issue, predicting “political trainwreck,” but today could hardly find anything to say in light of this HUGE positive development (only one retweet in last 20hrs), it is evident that the ODS is entrenched on “left” as well….

Afternoon, TODville! Did I miss anything? (I’ll go read for myself!)

  13. September 14, 2013 at 5:42 pm

    Bullseye LL,
You have pointed most accurately to a phenomenon — wholesale delusion of the kind that afflicts cult members. I always wondered as a kid how so many people could be brainwashed into drinking cyanide in the Jonestown tragedy. That was before I read books on that in college. Still it is a frightening experience to go through what we are seeing now in real time, when people can sustain such a blinkered view of President Obama.

I guess it is a function of the very label he gave himself in 2007 when he called himself a Rorschach Test on which people project their hopes and aspirations. That people are projecting such villainy onto him tells us a great deal more about how diseased the recesses of their very own hearts/minds have become, than it has anything to do with PBO himself

    Very insightful piece

    • 50 theo67
      September 14, 2013 at 6:03 pm

The scary part is how far-reaching the disease has spread. When Randi Rhodes even joins in on ascribing nefarious motives behind the President’s action on Syria, then you know that this is a very big problem. It needs to be fixed; otherwise, it’s going to destroy this country – and inflict the consequences on the rest of the world.

      • 51 hopefruit2
        September 14, 2013 at 6:12 pm

I think the disease has inflicted the US media for the most part. And I agree that this malignancy in our media needs to be fixed or we could be facing some disastrous consequences down the road.

The majority of PBO supporters still support him. Those who claimed that they supported him before, but no longer do, are not being completely honest. They may have jumped on his bandwagon, hoping it would bring THEM fame, fortune or fill existing voids in their lives. The rest of us have not wavered in our support.

        • 54 arkluvspbo
          September 15, 2013 at 8:22 am

I have never EVER wavered. I had a dream about then-Candidate Obama and Michelle Obama, they came me and talked to me, while the girls played with my pup (this was before they got Bo), ever since then I have remained steadfast in my loyalty. I truly believe it was a message for me to get the message out that this President is “the One”. Every now and then I have glimpses of that dream when I see him talking to other supporters/citizens/etc, so I know I’m correct in my assessment.

    • September 14, 2013 at 6:50 pm

I wonder if there is someone or something orchestrating all this derangement…who ultimately benefits from this derangement on left??…is it the same someone or something that benefits from the derangement on the right…

also it is interesting to look at what groups are not suffering from this derangement and why….namely PBOs true base…The Obama Coalition…

Zizi, It’s like watching a bunch of 2 year olds attempting to fit a square peg in a round hole, and they can’t figure it out — then a gentle, patient adult comes along to show them how it’s done. Now, unlike the 2-year olds a 22-year old, or a 32-year old, or even a 52-year old, let their ego get in the way and they can’t believe the solution could be so easy as to just finding a round peg or a square hole.

How Putin “Outsmarted” Obama: By Completely Surrendering to All of His Demands

    By Spandan

    ————————–

So let’s review, shall we? The United States gets a full disarmament of Syria – verifiably, completely, and and transparently. Russia, which until the G-20 refused to even talk about consequences for Syria is suddenly on board. Syria can’t act fast enough to show and turn over the chemical weapons that until last week it didn’t even admit it had. Chemical weapons? What chemic… here you go! (credit: Stephanie Miller) And to boot, the United States got Russia to agree to govern this agreement under the part of the Security Council documents that covers military action, even if Russia is still putting up a front against it.

No one should forget that the United States was forced to consider limited military strikes – unilaterally if needed – because of Russia’s intransigence in protecting Syria from international consequences no matter its sins.

Ezra Klein (quite predictably) just penned an offensive piece in the WaPo titled “Was Obama’s Syria strategy brilliant or lucky?” He also tweeted his silly column in case you want to respond.

    Here is his conclusion:

” It’s hard to know sometimes whether Obama is playing a chess game that is so sophisticated the rest of us can’t tell what he’s doing or simply blundering about hoping for the best. From what we know so far, this looks like the latter.”

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2013/09/14/was-obamas-syria-strategy-brilliant-or-lucky/

This very much speaks to the “racism on the left” that many of us here and elsewhere have alluded to. They may not call him the N- word in public, they may not question his birthright, they may not circulate photoshopped pics of him and his wife with monkey faces, but their racism is just as virulent and offensive…I don’t need some 29-30 yr old punk that has NEVER organized a small group of kids, let alone operate on the world stage to tell me that the first AA president, a constitutional scholar, master community & world organizer with a foreign policy track record “blunders” about everything that he does and accomplishes….

Criquet and Derbingle raked WaPo over the coals on the “Statement from the President” thread.

I posted this response on that thread:

      (Full disclosure: female Japanese-American here.)

thanks for pointing me to criquet and Derbingle’s comments – I hadn’t seen them when I posted this. But their responses (and BWD’s) were SPOT ON!!! That arrogant punk is irritating to no end…just because someone told him (and we don’t even know how true that is) that PBO reads his stupid blog, his ego became massive – too big for his puny shoulders and body to support….

Don’t worry , Hopef, some of us sent Little Ezra a response a couple of hours back.

Thanks VC – I was not in the loop then, so it’s my absolute PLEASURE reading and retweeting some of your clever comebacks!!! :) :) :)

 I was tempted to send Little Ezra this one I got from Mighty P a while back, but thought it might be overkill on my part.

Great tweets, VC! You are a master at gracefully twisting the knife so deeply and effectively when dealing with these insufferable Obama haters.

That’s so despicable! First Klein admits that he doesn’t know or understand what President Obama is doing, but then he concludes that the President is “blundering about hoping for the best” based on what “we know.” Who the fuck are the “we” he is referring to? What exactly do the “we” know that he based his conclusion on? Some times the belief in white supremacy is so delusional. Who ever came up with the term “Obama Derangement Syndrome” was absolutely brilliant. How else can one explain a 28 year old pretend journalist who accuses the President of the United Sates for being a “blundering” idiot, while that same pretend journalist indirectly admits that he really does not know what he is talking about. But then again, if not because of a deep seated belief in White Supremacy, how else can one explain why a so called prestigious paper, like the Washington Post, giving this kid journalist prominent space to denigrate the President of the United States?

It turns out that the article wasn’t actually authored by Klein (although he tweeted it with no push-back, suggesting that he agreed with the author’s premise and conclusions)….

“It’s hard to know sometimes whether Obama is playing a chess game that is so sophisticated the rest of us can’t tell what he’s doing…”

I understand where our POTUS is coming from — why can’t these supposed, “intellectuals/journos” figure it out?

Thanks for another excellent essay, LL! Topical, and perfect for the political climate right now. Several of my relatives have terminal ODS, often tough to deal with.

Off-topic, but now the MSM echo-chamber closure is complete (as far as Twitter is concerned).

The reason I like Twitter is that it is an open forum.

Any person posting on Twitter knows that whatever they say is viewable/capturable by anyone on the Internet. Except for DM, no secrets on Twitter, and feedback from anyone who wishes to comment.

Well, it looks like the elite will no longer have to deal with the “unwashed masses.”

we can’t also forget the manner in which #43 got to be POTUS – by a right-leaning SCOTUS selecting him even though votes had not been fully counted.

even with this selection, when this nation was attacked on 911, not only was the country fully behind him but so was much of the world.

people forget that until #43 lied the world and attacked Iraq, he still had support from a majority. after the WMD lies, his reaction to Katrina shuttered the support of independents. by the time the economy crashed fully, a number of republicans woke up.

contrast that with how people immediately shrugged off PBO’s order to kill OBL & gave credit to #434 (a man who publicly said he is no longer interested in OBL & the resources necessary to support the hunt

My brother is a U of O alumni and was watching today.
I have not been able to listen to the radio news nor watch my usual MSNBC shows since this Syria problem.
We really need to get the funding changed so the wealthy are not so influential in owning the law makers. We also need to figure out how to get the media telling the real facts instead of just giving opinions. A lot of that has to do with wealthy owners influencing the public who vote for the legislators they have bought.

PBO disregards the screaming media and goes right to the people over the media. I do think this approach works for him, but most are too susceptible to the influence of the wealthy with their mission borne of greed. Both ends of the continuum far Right and far Left are not willing to compromise so they muck up the process of governing. Many of the voting public do no research and are so skeptical of politicians that they just choose a side like a fan of a football team and go with them no matter what. Others scare at every turn and believe whatever the media says. We are in a fix. Hope we can really change whatever needs changing to truly give the middle class a chance at success.

The diplomatic breakthrough in Geneva today is simply stunning. The “framework agreement for elimination of Syrian chemical weapons” reached by Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov delivers, in writing at least, just about everything President Barack Obama demanded when he threatened to attack the Assad regime earlier this month.

I think world leaders come to us, as has been said, “just when we need them.” President Obama. Pope Francis. In their cases, I personally feel we are seeing the seeds of a true new world order where, one fine day, we’ll all work together for the common good. Hope I live long enough to see some more seedlings.

Both, in today’s world, are being hit with unprecedented criticism – so far, it’s much, much worse (sadly, from within our country) for President Obama, but already (which is unprecedented) (unprecedented!) one of the U.S. (of course) Catholic Bishops is openly criticizing the Pope. You probably know that bishops aren’t elected by the people, as politicians in our country are – I’m talking apples and oranges, I realize – the Church is a totally hierarchical system. Pope Francis is sharing his message and the world is listening because he’s the titular head of the Catholic Church.

Criticism’s fine, we all know that, but if you know that the Pope is considered the successor of St. Peter, as all Catholics do, to whom Jesus is to have said, “Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build My Church,” then … come on, Bishop, what makes you the new rock of the Church? what were ya thinkin’?
