A group of ex-gold miners in South Africa say they are relieved that a health compensation claim against Anglo American South Africa has been settled.
They started the case in 2004, alleging they contracted the lung disease silicosis because of bad ventilation.
The firm settled the matter out of court without an admission of liability.
It is the first silicosis settlement in South Africa and lawyers say it could pave the way for more cases.
One of my grandfathers died of this disease but that was back late in the 1930′s when people were unaware of the effects to miners & metal workers of breathing toxic dust. Of course, there was no compensation then & it is a terrible way to die. We know better now & there is no excuse for workers sickening & dying from silicosis.
I am glad for these workers & hope others will be compensated as well. Also, the only way to make the mine owners protect their workers from further harm is to make them pay big $$$ for sickness & death!!!

We want a clean CR. That’s what we’re going to get. If they want to shut down the government, here’s how much time they have to figure it out: four days, 11 hours, 22 minutes and 15 seconds,” Reid said, pointing to a large television monitor in the Senate television studio counting down the time until government funding expires

Liberals Turn on ‘Liberal Media’
Liberals say mainstream pundits are hewing too close to the establishment.
What started as a firestorm on Twitter, turned into an angry petition and by noon on Wednesday more than 1,000 progressives had called NBC’s Washington bureau to tell people just how mad they were at Chuck Todd.
Seriously? Todd is a RWNJ who worked for either Roll Call or the Hill. The author of that article needs to be ashamed of him/herself. When C-SPAN had him on, they always had a person from Mother Jones, Nation or Salve to provide the other side.
There is no “other side” anymore, just those that tell the truth and those that don’t.
Agreed. I wanted to illustrate that Chuck Todd even for C-SPAN then, was No Liberal.
I could be wrong but it seems that the person who wrote this article did not pay attention to what the petition was about
Half the article accuses Stephanie Cutter of being a WH puppet. Very silly article. Perpetuates the very things that are wrong with the media and their “both sides” argument.

I am now able to listen to the president’s speech on ACA today. Thanks Chips.

I said earlier that POTUS was more on point, so well laid out, and so clear today. Some went after me for that comment. He was better at it today than I’ve heard him before.
“Some went after me for that comment.”
Some of us respectfully disagreed with you mainly because we’ve listened to the President give similar brilliant speeches about ACA before todays’ speech. I am saddened that you felt that people who were honestly disagreeing with your perception were going after you.
PBO HAVING THE TIME OF HIS LIFE
‘All this would be funny if it wasn’t so crazy’
By Steve Benen
I can imagine President Obama feeling a little frustrated under the current circumstances. Congressional Republicans might shut down the federal government next week, and next month, they might deliberately trash the full faith and credit of the United States. He’s having success in foreign policy, but Congress is broken and the public is frustrated.
But today, in Largo, Md., the president spoke at length about the Affordable Care Act, and he generally seemed to be having the time of his life. For those who can’t watch clips online, Obama spent some time talking about the rhetoric surrounding the law has gotten more hysterical lately.
Here’s a great comment at this ‘All this would be funny if it wasn’t so crazy’ post…….

I’ve been saying this for ages:
MOCK THEN ALL!!!!!
ALL DAY, EVERY DAY!!!!!!!!!!
Then, and only then, if the President, and every non-DINO politician in the country did the same thing – MOCK THEM! – then the MSM might actually get in on it, and ask these sociopathic Republican/Conservative loons, why they shouldn’t be mocked?
How, when you predict that a REPUBLICAN health care plan – designed by the REPUBLICAN Heritage Foundation, for REPUBLICAN Presidential candidate Bob Dole for use in case Bill Clinton decided to make health care insurance and issue again in ’96, and then signed into law as a test-case by REPUBLICAN MA Governor, Mitt Romney, who then had to run away from it like it was a rabid and AIDS-ridden Vampire Bat with the Ebola virus, because the REPUBLICAN establishment deemed their own REPUBLICAN health care plan to be the end of America and the world as we know it just because the Democratic Congress took that REPUBLICAN plan, and passed it, and the President signed the REPUBLICAN plan into law, and the REPUBLICAN Chief Justice of the SCOTUS said that REPUBLICAN plan was Constitutional – how, by predicting the end of liberty, freedom, justice, and ‘The American Way,” by following their own REPUBLICAN health care plan, HOW IS THAT NOT MOCKABLE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
IF THAT’S NOT MOCKABLE, THEN WHAT THE F*CK EXACTLY IS MOCKABLE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Got the title wrong, but I just knew it would be a new meme by the time I finished yakking.
Heard Tamron Hall mention the Trib editorial re. their board meeting with state officials to try to get answers on Obamacare in Illinois. So I read it. I think we need to recognize that there are going to be some rough patches here in the beginning. Officials still did not have answers to many critical details. I see there is going to be great disparity in costs depending on where you live in Illinois—–$367, or thereabouts, for lowest cost plan for a 55 yr. old non-smoker in Chgo—-$487, or thereabouts (can’t remember exactly) in downstate Illinois. See insurers are eliminating the possibility of using “major medical centers” in Chgo and elsewhere and the drs. there. And elsewhere—-I see Ct. will have the highest premiums in the country—-$436 for lowest cost plan——and even tho most states have multiple participating insurers, N.H. and W.V. have only one. Seems like a lot of disparity everywhere. People are going to need to be patient because there is going to be confusion and problems in the early days of this.
Yes, true statements.
but remember that when the debate for ACA first began, some people argued that there should be 1 uniform exchange.
however, conservative Dems and republicans who were work on the bi-partisan approach insisted that there should 50 exchanges 1 for each state and respecting the prevailing insurance market.
that is why we have to expect disparities and glitches and the negative reports (like PBO warned about today)
People certainly need to be patient and realistic. There are 300 million people who will each have an individual story, individual issues. There are state laws, federal laws, and in some cases, even city ordinances that have to be taken into consideration. It also doesn’t help that the GOP reduced funding for ACA and they’ve had to do a lot of this relatively inexpensively. Plus, they’re working with an existing system that really doesn’t work for many people, and trying to add 30 million more people into that existing system – one that is governed differently in 50 different states. I’ve worked in project management for 20+ years, and I’ve never once had a project that went without a single hitch, no matter how well we’ve planned contingencies and mitigated risk. Reality is an ongoing event, and things come up all the time. The only thing they can do is be well prepared. I wish them luck!
On October 1, I will report to TOD on what is available, what it costs, etc. here in Chicago.
Chips, Thank you for posting the YouTube version of this morning’s speech. I feel better sharing this version (than the C-Span one).
You are fast of feet and fleet of pace!

Looking at today’s date on the bottom right of my computer it just suddenly flashed into my head that yesterday should have been my offspring’s birthday. Instead the little imp decided to come on June 25 – waaaay too early, and weighing in at less than 2 pounds! Ah memories! He did get discharged from the NICU on the right date in September though, so his rush to get out into the real world was thwarted.
He couldn’t wait to meet his mom! Smart lad.
Yeah! Would have been even smarter to wait his turn and save himself all that prodding and poking and fussing in the hospital. Nevertheless, a miracle he is, so I have no reason to complain! Can’t imagine why it all popped into my head today.
Happy “almost” birthday to the wee one (who is not so wee anymore…)

Please allow a chance to rant:
sometimes people’s priorities are surprising.
what bothers in time like we are in is that some people who should know better focus on the talk going on in the beltway.
routinely, people who should know better forget that they owe something “from whence they came”.
Fact: the number of people who are uninsured is very high.
Fact: the highest number of people who are uninsured are poor members in racial minority communities.
Fact: the people who stand to gain most from PBO standing up for Obamacare and other parts of the safety-net are the poor and marginalized.
Hence, I am very bothered that a person who has position of privilege (like a journalist working on in nation’s capital and in the media outlet which powerbrokers use) can be focused on PBO’s poll numbers when millions of people are hoping to just get a chance to live with health care.
I usually don’t respond to what polls say.
But during this critical period, I think that it is wrong when the few journalists of color, who have platform, focus on PBO’s poll numbers instead of what a government shutdown or defunding ObamaCare means to millions who live on the edge.
it seems like “dereliction of journalist duty”

Does she think he won’t get re-elected ? giggle.
Why do still report polling on this President ?
the question you asked is what I immediately thought of and almost responded in the same words.
however, I could not over look the bigger picture of “passing through the door and closing it behind you”.
or as they say (with some modification) ” A Journalistic Platform is a Terrible Thing To Waste”
by the way, ALL journalist should be focused on the issues that really matter to ordinary people.
but when your neighborhood/community is burning and some people are helping to put out the fire, you don’t use the 1 microphone in the community to criticize how the fire captain looks/sounds or what others think of him/her.
instead, you get whatever talent/resources you have and help those who are trying to put out the fire
I understand your POV and I agree. However as I see the MSM, if the AA “journalist” used her access to the microphone to do anything other than try to harm PBO politically, she would have her access to the microphone taken away. The only person in the media who exemplifies the way you and I think members of the MSM should behave is Rev. Al Sharpton (and I think he is given more license to not sell his soul for airtime due to his history as a civil rights activist). Joy Reid is another voice of reason in the MSM, but her integrity seems to be preventing her from advancing in her career. I would not put too much stock in this poll the MSM is obsessing about. I don’t know the internals of the poll (i.e., were the south or republicans overrepresented?). With all the drama going on in Washington, all politicians are going to see a drop in their poll numbers. Washington is dysfunctional and the American people are frustrated. PBO remains the most popular politician in the country (as the reaction of crowds attending his speeches clearly illustrate). Polls are often skewed to support MSM propaganda offensives (like polls showing Romney leading PBO leading up to the 2012 election).
“if the AA “journalist” used her access to the microphone to do anything other than try to harm PBO politically, she would have her access to the microphone taken away.”
this is absolutely true. every single person employed by a major media outlet is suspect, because of this simple truth you highlighted. each one plays a pre-determined role for different audiences, but the end goal is the same for the billionaire owners of all the media – keep liberals out of power, especially the darkly hued ones such as president obama. luckily we’ve been winning most of the battles recently and i think we’ll win the war in the long run as long as people stay united against the republican/libertarian takeover and demolishing of the constitution.
totally agree with your assessment.
sometimes I wish that if you feel your position is threatened (like she must based on the points you accurately raise) then you can choose to just not say anything
silence is golden – especially if you don’t have to on the topic at hand.
when you remain silent for a while your record remains undefined.
I must give her kudos though for not responding in an angry manner – like some usually do.
I am no fan of Nia-Malika Henderson

Anarchists of the House
The Republican Congress is testing a new frontier of radicalism—governmental sabotage.
By Jonathan Chait
The Republican Party has spent 30 years careering ever more deeply into ideological extremism, but one of the novel developments of the Obama years is its embrace of procedural extremism. The Republican fringe has evolved from being politically shrewd proponents of radical policy changes to a gang of saboteurs who would rather stop government from functioning at all. In this sense, their historical precedents are not so much the Gingrich revolutionaries, or even their tea-party selves of a few years ago; the movement is more like the radical left of the sixties, had it occupied a position of power in Congress. And so the terms we traditionally use to scold bad Congresses—partisanship, obstruction, gridlock—don’t come close to describing this situation. The hard right’s extremism has bent back upon itself, leaving an inscrutable void of paranoia and formless rage and twisting the Republican Party into a band of anarchists.
And the worst is not behind us.
This is such an excellent article, I’ve gone back and read it a few times. Anyone who hasn’t read it certainly should. Superb share, Ladyhawke.

I want to thank you all for your good wishes and leave you with this pearl.
One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a
battle that goes on inside people. He said, “My son,
The battle is between two ‘wolves’ inside us all.
One is EVIL. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret,
greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment
Inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority and ego.
The other is GOOD. It is joy, peace, love, hope,
serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence,
empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.”
The grandson thought about it for a minute
and then asked his grandfather,
“Which wolf wins?”
The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”
Wise words. I pray you have a speedy recovery and will be back soon to share your voice with us. Take care and stay strong. E
