Morning, TOD. Still unable to create an account at healthcare.gov. Still blank fields when I get to the security questions. The system has been overwhelmed all night long.
So I guess a few people want ACA after all, huh?
Oh, and I loathe Republicans. In case anyone here didn’t know.
I tried too same issue. I am glad a lot of people are signing up. Repubs stink.
That’s the conversation I had with Live Chat when I was able to get through about 7:00 this morning.
We all loathe Repubs. Hope you get to sign up soon.
Good Morning Chipsticks! Good Morning Early Birds and Extended Night Owls!!!
Good morning fellow TODbots! What a morning. I am very excited about this Obamacare morning. I know several who are so excited about being able to get insurance. But I am still so worried about all the people affected by the shutdown. My prayers are with all.
In their last “dirty” CR, the GOP included a delay of the individual mandate. The claim of “fairness” was their justification for including this provision.
Yes, there is a penalty if individuals fail to obtain health care insurance, and the GOP and their friends in the media are anxious to let you know that. But I have not heard any information – aside from personal research and mentions at this site – about the exemptions for the penalty.
Besides the fact the most Americans are getting – and will continue to get – insurance through their employers:
The government has identified exemptions. Individuals who cannot afford coverage because the cost of premiums exceed 8 percent of their household income or those whose household incomes are below the minimum threshold for filing a tax return are exempt. People experiencing certain hardships, including those who would have been eligible for Medicaid under the health law’s new rules but whose states chose not to expand their programs, also are exempt.
Other exempt groups include prisoners, Native Americans eligible for care through the Indian Health Care service, immigrants who are in the country illegally, people whose religion objects to having insurance coverage, members of a health care sharing ministry and individuals who experience a short coverage gap of less than three consecutive months.
CBO estimates that in 2016, after the major provisions of the health law are implemented, 24 million people will be exempted from the mandate’s penalties.
Including this in the CR made certain this bill was DOA when it reached the Senate. Their audacity was magnified with their faux outrage that the Senate refused their last minute demand to conference – when they have refused to do so for the past SIX months! The GOP’s faux sympathy that millions of Americans would be hurt by the shutdown – when they have voted to reduce funding for food stamps, and have refused to vote on appropriations to fund other programs!
They have chosen to repeat the refrain of their “one hit wonder” to repeal Obamacare — lying about what is or is not in the law (I wonder if they even know), working at the (red) state level to sabotage the implementation of the exchanges.
And just like millions of dollars in funding, filibustering, and voter suppression tactics did not keep President Obama from being re-elected, all the money and lies and sabotage did not keep the insurance marketplace from opening today!

Thanks Jer, I haven’t seen that video before. Love watching the POTUS & FLOTUS dancing. What a happy night that was.
I know that FLOTUS can’t wait for 2017 so that her husband can get as far away from those crazy people. I am glad that FLOTUS and DR. Biden are able to do so much good for military families and can stay above the frey. It will be a sad day for our country in 2017 to see a brilliant man go but I will be happy for them.
Good morning jojo. You just said a mouth full there! Amen!!!!!HZ
My heart goes out this morning to every federal employee who will go without pay and suffer hardship; to every vet who won’t get the treatment they need; to everyone hoping to get a loan for their first house and for college students needing to pay tuition, and to all of us who are forced to live in a country with a broken House of Representatives whose decisions are made on hatred, not common sense or humanity. All of our American flags should be flown at half mast in collective grief over the death of a once functioning house of Congress. We must make every one of this anti-American, anti-democracy saboteurs pay in 2014.

My sister works for the FBI here in WV. She does the gun background checks. She was told yesterday she would still be required to work as her position is deemed essential, but she wouldn’t be paid as long as the shutdown continues. She is worried about her house and car payment, but will report to work as usual. We just hope, for her sake and the sake of her co-workers, that this shutdown doesn’t last long. Shame on the GOP, that’s all I can say.
Exactly. How long do they expect people to work without pay? The repubs are hateful greedy bastards. I only hope Democrats are not complacent again during the midterm elections.
It’s the same with the people who work for the Social Security Administration in my city. They were told if they did not come to work they would be considered “awol” and could lose their jobs.
Really? I had heard this from a commenter at JMG but didn’t believe it was true. How can you be required to work without compensation? Slavery is illegal. This is really crazy!
I still cannot believe people are expected to work without being paid – the GOP should be sued by every person who has to do this.

As we need to keep repeating to folks, if Obamacare is so darn bad then why are the Republicans fighting it so darn hard?
If it were so bad, they would love to see it implemented and fail so that they can say, “See! Told you so!” Then they would run on that in 2014 and 2016.
They’ve always been against healthcare reform just like they’re firmly opposed to any gun control reform.
I don’t know if this is part of the gamesmanship, or whatever is going on, but I hear expectations that the shutdown could drag on indefinitely. Such unnecessary idiocy. And I see many in the media trying to keep straight faces while they go out of their way to blame “both sides”. Peter Alexander on Today just looked kindof proud that he found someone on the street to blame “both sides”.

Netanyahu takes case against Iran from White House to UN
Netanyahu takes case against Iran from White House to UN By HERB KEINON
//IN UN speech, it is unlikely that PM will openly come out against direct US-Iranian talks, but he is likely to stress that negotiations must have a deadline, sanctions must not be eased and military threat must remain.
After presenting his case against Iran privately to US President Barack Obama for a few hours on Monday, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu will condense but dramatize his argument and take it to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.
It is unlikely, however, that Netanyahu will openly come out against direct US-Iranian talks, especially since a CNN poll on Monday found that three-quarters of Americans say they favor direct diplomatic negotiations with Iran.
Tellingly, he did not oppose the dialogue during his statement to the press in the White House after his meeting with Obama.

In a rejection of congressional Republicans’ strategy, Americans overwhelmingly oppose undermining President Barack Obama’s health-care law by shutting down the federal government or resisting an increase in the nation’s debt limit, according to a poll released today.
By 72 percent to 22 percent, Americans oppose Congress “shutting down major activities of the federal government” as a way to stop the Affordable Care Act from going into effect, the national survey from Quinnipiac University found.
Hopefully the mid-term elections of 2014 will reflect this poll.
Obama urges Netanyahu to speed up peace talks with Palestinians
U.S. President Barack Obama on Monday urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accelerate peace negotiations with the Palestinians and to start seriously discussing core issues, among them borders, security arrangements, Palestinian refugees and Jerusalem.
A senior U.S. official told Haaretz that apart from Iran’s nuclear program, Netanyahu and Obama discussed at length the progress of Israeli-Palestinian talks. The U.S. president told the prime minister that he appreciates the difficult decisions Netanyahu took to resume negotiations, especially the release of long-time Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails.
During the meeting at the White House, Obama spoke with Netanyahu about his meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas last week on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. During their meeting, Abbas asked for a more active U.S. role in talks with Israel.
Yeah! Wouldn’t it be GREAT is PBO oversaw the Israeli/Palestinian peace deal? This is my dream.
Democrats Launch Speaker Cruz Website
American Bridge, a Democratic tracking firm, launched a website late Monday declaring Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) the next speaker of the House.
The website, SpeakerCruz.com, features a sad-looking House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Cruz saying, “I got it from here, bud.”
In the days leading up to a shutdown of the federal government, Democrats seized on reports that Cruz was rallying Boehner’s own members against him.
“Headed into tonight’s budget deadline, Speaker John Boehner had two options,” American Bridge spokesman Chris Harris said in a statement. “Side with a majority of Americans and continue funding the people’s government with a clean CR or allow the House to be hijacked by a small number of radical legislators who are more concerned with appeasing the dwindling Tea Party than actually doing their jobs.”
“Regrettably, Boehner chose the latter,” Harris added. “His refusal to stand up against the worst elements of his own party means he’s effectively put Ted Cruz in the Speaker’s chair.”

The people became discouraged until Haggai stepped in with that message from God. We MUST be faithful, keep praying, keep working and keep supporting the “good guys”!!!!!!
Blessed day to all. I will lurk as I can while I serve the least, the last and the lost.

Another interesting tidbit from the new Quinnipiac poll:
“Looking at the 2014 Congressional races, voters pick a generic Democrat over a generic Republican candidate 43% to 34%, the widest Democratic margin measured so far.”
According to Politico, Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) “has privately warned House Republicans that they could lose their majority in 2014 as a result of shutting down the government.”
Another from the same site:
A new Quinnipiac poll finds that American voters oppose Congress shutting down the federal government to block implementation of Obamacare, 72% to 22%. Voters also oppose blocking an increase in the nation’s debt ceiling as a way to stop Obamacare, 64% to 27%.
Key finding: “American voters are divided on Obamacare, with 45% in favor and 47% opposed, but they are opposed 58% to 34% to Congress cutting off funding for the health care law to stop its implementation.”
Said pollster Peter Brown: “Americans are certainly not in love with Obamacare, but they reject decisively the claim by Congressional Republicans that it is so bad that it’s worth closing down the government to stop it.
I believe that now that Obamacare is actually starting up today, it will become more popular as more Americans experience its benefits. It’s still a bit of an unknown at this point.
I can’t help but notice that the usual “Dems” who are usually quite vocal whenever it’s time to criticize PBO on a given issue, are deafeningly silent on the Boehner/GOP shutdown.
I haven’t seen or heard anything from the likes of Alan Grayson, Bernie Sanders, Ron Wyden, you know, the usual media whores who appear on MSNBC to attack PBO at the slightest indication of a controversy, whether it was NSA, Syria, Social Security benefits, etc. Those same “Liberals” have been mighty quiet in the last 48 hrs…
