Very late getting going this morning, phone now off the hook – will have R&S up in about 30-ish minutes!
As you listen to the lyrics in #FORWARD, apply them to where we are today, and have a really good day, nothwithstanding GOPs’ perfidy.
You better believe we will remember, Chips! This is such a two-fer.
G’morning Chips, TOD, lurkers, everyone, and congrats vc on #1
Congrats to U 2, Ms Hf! We made it to the ACA debut rollout.
Congrats to everyone who’s here to celebrate another step forward on the road away from GOP lies and cruelty – OBAMACARE!
Good Morning TOD.
Hi Mariele! It’s so potent to be a front row participant in history, isn’t it?
Yes it is. Sad to think that the only real adults up there are President Obama, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats.
On the other hand, not truly sad. Or sad, but not hopeless. Can you imagine if they weren’t there? Or if the Dem CiC and leadership were still operating under the old, accepted political leadership model? [I can think what if someone else I won't name were to have been at the top?]
So yes, it’s sad that GOPs are playing with our lives, but not hopeless because we have smart patriotic leadership, and the ‘right thing to do’ on our side.
I rambled along as I often do, then ended up exactly where you were! Be patient with me, Mariele please. I think I’m druggy with the unfolding of events. You can roll your eyes now.
Have yourself a good day!
Congrats on 1st, VC.
Only had a few hours sleep because of this tragedy caused by America’s gravest enemy – the #GOP.
Senator Reid is now dispatching the latest threat to our democracy as he immediately tables the House’s traitorous act.
@Pfeiffer44 @vj44 Beyond reasonable doubt, the #GOP is willing to destroy our democracy & economy to keep Americans from having health care.— Bobfr (@Our4thEstate) October 01, 2013
Agree with you, BobFr.
Just sick about the GOP House.
@JamesFallows said it best:
“As a matter of journalism, any story that presents the disagreements as a “standoff,” a “showdown,” a “failure of leadership,” a sign of “partisan gridlock,” or any of the other usual terms for political disagreement, represents a failure of journalism…”
This traitorous act by GOP House and MSM cann ot be forgotten.

Happy health care everyone – and remember if you have a problem with the ACA (We had heaps in the 1970s in Oz – my Mom was caught in a catch 22 issue) it WILL get sorted. Took us 6 months to get the govt to understand the problem folks like my Mom had – but it got fixed.
I wish the wrath of everyone on the planet onto Boehner & Co
When it comes to understanding the negotiating postures of the congressional caucuses, the playing field isn’t exactly level. One the one side we see Republican lawmakers who insist on undermining the Affordable Care Act — somehow, some way, for some reason — just for the sake of doing so.
For GOP leaders, recent developments are simply outrageous — why won’t Democrats ignore the election results, the public good, and their own principles, and simply give the party that lost the elections what they want? What’s so unreasonable about that?
On the other side, we see Democratic lawmakers who … aren’t making any demands at all.
A regular Maddow Blog reader emailed overnight to ask for more information on what Democrats have already compromised on in this process. The short answer is, “Everything.”

We (mostly) all rose ….and shone with the Early Bird chat so you really don’t need to have a post named ‘R & S’ today. I personally think “REMEMBER THIS DAY” is a perfect rise and shine title FOR TODAY!!!! By all means bring on the ‘lovleiness’ that you are preparing, but there’s no need to a)apologize, or b) call it ‘R & S’. Seems to me you were not late getting going at all. Just saying!
And doesn’t everyone love my creative spelling of loveliness? I was too busy pleading (something I don’t do well) with CC to keep an eye on spelling. That’s the story I’m sticking to.
“I personally think “REMEMBER THIS DAY” is a perfect rise and shine title FOR TODAY!!!!”
Good suggestion, VC.
I second that!
TY, Bob! You think Chips Chica’s paying any attention to us, or is her head buried over her pics?
I’m sure our dear Chips is listening, VC
I was left behind on the last thread!!!
Anyway, I am very proud of our Harry Reid who is now “tabling” the latest stunt (CR) sent by the phony Speaker of the House after midnight. The latest version is delaying the individual mandate among other things. Stand strong, Mr. Reid.
It’s understandable that no one in Washington wants to be blamed for the government shutdown, even those responsible for it, because crises like these are wildly unpopular. The electorate has come to expect sharp partisan differences, but shutdowns are tantrums that the public tends to find repulsive.
And so, we will hear many congressional Republicans and many in the political media suggest Democrats bear some or all of the responsibility for this fiasco. For those who care about reality in the slightest, anyone making such an argument deserves to be laughed at.
The detail to keep in mind is that most GOP lawmakers aren’t bothering with the pretense. They know that Republicans shut down the government — and they’re proud of it.
“We have elected an ungovernable collection of snake-handlers, Bible-bangers, ignorami, bagmen and outright frauds, a collection so ungovernable that it insists the nation be ungovernable, too. We have elected people to govern us who do not believe in government.”
“We have elected people to govern us who do not believe in government.”
Yup. You get the government you voted for.
Excellent summary of the reasons for this current crisis. That 2010 election was so fateful, ushered in this motley crew of anarchists. I hope Dems have learned they have to vote in every election, especially with these types waiting to swoop in, even when Barack Obama is not on the ballot.
We have elected people to govern us who do not believe in government.”
and we must not give into the notion that they cannot be defeated because of gerrimandering…we must have a strategy…we must organize…and get out the vote…
we must save our Democracy
Totally, totally agree. The ‘gerrymandering makes it hopeless’ meme has to end. If we vote in enough numbers, we can win. It’s up to us.
@AP @KARLewis That is to be expected, and actually a good sign because so many people are interested.— (@aspirational12) October 01, 2013
But, but, but, Obamacare is very unpopular!
Hello MPamela – there are many lighting candles for the President
Terse, acerbic John Boehner was just on display in a middle of the night press conference that didn’t seem to serve any purpose for him or his party. With the government shutdown a little more than an hour old and his party having just voted to approve a negotiating gambit that the Democratic Senate rejected before it even became official, all eyes were on Boehner for clues about what comes next — and what tone he would set.
He ignored a couple of questions — including one about what he would say to those government workers who would be furloughed — instead sticking to talking points about legislative arcana. Then he just as abruptly walked away.
If this is going to the be the public face of the Republican Party for the duration of the shutdown, it’s going to be more politically painful than most people predicted.
But the media tell us it is the President who won’t talk to them – won’t answer their questions.
The media are as much to blame for this as the GOP – telling people not to vote in 2010 – putting Palin’s talking points all over the news – saying how sad when a member of congress is almost killed (and her supporters are killed) but not being willing to admit WHO was encouraging the insane to shoot democratic politicians. No republican politician has had to pay for the harm they have done – so they just do some more.

A regular Maddow Blog reader emailed overnight to ask for more information on what Democrats have already compromised on in this process. The short answer is, “Everything.”
Dems passed the Affordable Care Act a few years ago, which itself was a compromise — Dems traded away many progressive goals and priorities, embracing a Republican-friendly health care plan in order to get the legislation done. Since then, lawmakers in both parties have approved all kinds of spending bills that included funding for the health care law.
Over the last several weeks, however, with a shutdown deadline looming, it was time for the parties to lay out their demands. Republicans demanded fewer health care benefits for Americans. Democrats could have demanded anything — an end to the damaging sequestration policy, elimination of the debt ceiling, a vote on immigration reform, universal background checks — but instead started in the center. Congressional Dems were even willing to accept painfully low spending levels, as evidenced by this chart Michael Linden and Harry Stein published yesterday, just to ensure the government didn’t shut down.
Democrats, in other words, acted like grown-ups, putting aside their own policy agenda — an agenda the public endorsed in the recent national elections — in the interest of avoiding a crisis. Republicans could have taken this as a win and moved on, but they wouldn’t take “yes” for an answer.
When GOP stops funding TP crazies & starts primarying them with "sane" candidates, maybe they will be considered a responsible party again.— john miller (@deaconmill) October 01, 2013
That probably won’t happen until the 2016 elections – when President Obama is no longer considered a threat.
It won’t happen until Citizen United is done away with. The big money Pubs will continue to throw money after their desired outcome. They will finance the candidate who represents them, and finance a primary against any pub candidate who won’t go along with their agenda. Think Koch, Heritage, Annelson, etc.
The only thing that turns this around is GOTV to get around gerrymandering.
The citizen United is a response to PBO being elected. If a GOP candidate gets elected President, there will be no use for Citizens United or the Tea Party.
Citizen United was brought to the SCOTUS over a Hillary campaign issue during the 2008 elections. Once PBO was elected, it gave the conservative SCOTUS even more reason to uphold it.
There will continue to be use for it because the big money folks need to keep their designated candidate/s viable. They can’t do that without being able to pour money into the politics of donating Super PAC money to either support or campaign against their own party candidates. There will never be a moderate Pub elected again.
This could be a good thing for Dems to win over true independents, Reagan Republicans, and undecideds. However, in order to do this, Dems must GOTV to overcome the built in obstacle of gerrymandering.
I went to Saxby Chambliss’ site to leave some comments….this is what is posted:
Due to the government shutdown, Senator Chambliss’ office is performing essential operations and emergency services only. If you have an emergency or need immediate assistance, please refer to the following list of emergency contacts within the federal government at http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/contingency-plans
As a result of the shut down, general comments, messages and inquiries will be delayed.

We have elected a national legislature in which Louie Gohmert and Michele Bachmann have more power than does the Speaker of the House of Representatives, who has been made a piteous spectacle in the eyes of the country and doesn’t seem to mind that at all. We have elected a national legislature in which the true power resides in a cabal of vandals, a nihilistic brigade that believes that its opposition to a bill directing millions of new customers to the nation’s insurance companies is the equivalent of standing up the the Nazis in 1938, to the bravery of the passengers on Flight 93 on September 11, 2001, and to Mel Gibson’s account of the Scottish Wars of Independence in the 13th Century. We have elected a national legislature that looks into the mirror and sees itself already cast in marble.
We did this. We looked at our great legacy of self-government and we handed ourselves over to the reign of morons.

Good Morning all you O’s!!! What a great getting up day in TOD O’CARE town!!!
I decided not to go the Ocare site for my state today. Even though #2 becomes eligible in 2014, she doesn’t have to make a decision or purchase today. Besides, there’s more info I need from my retirement employer provided plan as to the exact effective date that she is no longer insured by them. Until then, I figure there’s no sense in me contributing to any high volume traffic issues to the site/s.
Some RWNJs are bombarding the OCare sites with the intent to keep it overwhelmed. What they don’t know is that they’re actually contributing to the optic and narrative that there is high interest in getting OCare.
I wanted to ‘be heard’ by accessing healthcare.gov but it appears millions had the same idea!
So I’m with you – I actually cannot sign up right away until I get some info from my accountant. I would LOVE to see the Illinois rates and will continue to try to create an account, but I’m not in any great rush.
People can still vote smart and get these #teapartyTerrorists aka @gop out of their lives forever. http://t.co/ORZvKW0BX4— (@amk4obama) October 01, 2013
I’ve been seeing comments about problems getting into the ACA exchanges, etc. Is it possible the Repubs have people trying to jam the system or someone’s hacking it? I hate the thought of that – it makes me sick, but I wouldn’t put anything past these idiots (trying to keep it clean)… I’m just a worrier.
Yes, that is happening. Visit any RWNJ site and they are in full blown head explosion mode. Jamming the sites is the only thing they have left. Don’t worry, it’ll come off as just how high the interest is in obtaining OCare.
I prefer to think that folks who did not have insurance, finally get an opportunity to get healthcare coverage and the system is working with a temporary overload of folks ready to get Obamacare. After a couple days or so it will get back to normal. It is a good thing from my perspective.
It’s a combination of all of these – formerly uninsured individuals/groups, who are now trying to sign up, RWNJ’s who are deliberately trying to gum up the system, and Media reporters who are “testing” the system for their own curiousity.
After a couple weeks, all this traffic will subside and the only ones who will persist are those who REALLY need and want to enroll in the exchanges. For today and the next few days, all kinds of people (even foreigners) will be trying to access these sites for all kinds of reasons.
Have patience and take heart. That’s why the enrollment period is 3-6 months, and not 3-6 days or even 3-6 weeks. We need to be adult about this.
Could be — I thought about that myself.
I think it’s more like journos and interns and congressional staffers and the like are all trying to check things out or write stories and are using bandwith that the uninsured could be using.

Updates on ACA:
I was able to get through to Live Chat about 7:00 this morning. The blank fields on security questions is being worked on. Frankly, the fact that millions of people were trying to get information in the middle of the night is great news.
FYI – I won’t be actually signing up for insurance until I talk to my accountant. Our business is incorporated but my husband and I are the only employees. I need to determine if small business exchange applies, better with individual insurance implications. I just would LOVE to get an idea of what the rates would be for this 63 year old Chicagoan. According to Live Chat, I can only get that info online, and only if I have an existing healthcare.gov account. I could get some idea if I called in, but I am not going to tie up phone lines. I can be patient.
