You mean …….. you lied????? Can’t understand why people lie about their age
Sherijr, I almost made a comment earlier that at least you admit to being a bit older than CC, but decided to restrain myself…..until I noticed she DARED comment on YOUR CHOSEN AGE! Humpfff! The effrontery of SOME people in this village goes unchecked too often. /insert innocent smilie her – something like an angel with a golden halo/ Just saying.
right back atcha Dudette
Okay, I’m suspicious. No 23 year old gets excited over a dremel cutting copper pipes. Methinks you’re at least 26.
have a wonderful birthday Sherijr. I hope you get all you wish for!
Sherijr! My dear girlfriend! Having a heck of a time getting your HAPPY BIRTHDAY greeting into the right place!! But a very blessed and joy filled day to you, and yes, you rock my world too!! Lit a candle for ya’! Love you ~ http://www.gratefulness.org/candles/candles.cfm?l=eng&gi=PBO

[Don't know why, but your greeting suddenly made me think of an Alcoholics Anonymous greeting]
I freaking love VP Biden’s Ray Bans. He makes it look so cool.

I Love my President and VP
The President and Vice President are totally made of awesome. They did this walkathon to lunch to reassure the public, especially that DC is still a very safe place to be and visit. I just love, love the pics. Oh they are so amazing. I want them as my Presidential team 4ever!
Congrats on 1st Eve!
Love how you’re trash-tweeting Knoller, Todd & Karl, Ms Chips

Sorry if this was posted already…
It’s official. They have NO BRAIN CELLS.
THE SHUTDOWN IMPACT ON THE STATE DEPARTMENT
At the beginning of the State Department daily briefing yesterday, Spokesperson Marie Harf outlined the impact of the government shutdown on the department. The Tea Party Tantrum is impacting operations and diplomatic activities. And of course President Obama having cancel his trip to Asia is tragic and embarrassing.
This is worth a read and a ‘pass-it-on’. Here’s a journo with seemingly a better grasp on the GOP than some of the media types who are in WDC.
But in a larger, more important sense, Erickson is wrong: This is not about shutting down ObamaCare. This is about a political minority with grandiose dreams about itself, attempting to seize power not by winning elections — it has proved it cannot do so — but by threatening to do harm to the country. For all the attention paid to ObamaCare, it is merely the ransom demanded of this year’s episode of hostage-taking. In previous years, the tactic has been targeted at federal spending, or protecting tax cuts for the rich.
And next year? If this tactic is allowed to succeed with ObamaCare, the ransom in next year’s hostage-taking might be privatizing Social Security or Medicare, or gutting the Department of Education or the EPA. The outside groups that are pushing this fight — Heritage Action, Club for Growth, Senate Conservatives Fund, FreedomWorks and many others — are not going to just pack it in should they somehow manage to defeat ObamaCare. Like the conservative entertainment complex of which Erickson is a part, they now constitute an industry.
Rather than power down their computers, retire their email fundraising lists and let their lease lapse on their Arlington office space should they somehow win the ObamaCare fight, they’re going to look for a new cause that allows them to frighten and inflame and anger, and then to gorge themselves on that anger and fear. That’s what they do and who they are. That is their profession.

“House Democratic leaders believe they have hit on a new way to potentially force House Republican leaders into allowing a vote on a ‘clean CR’ funding the government without any defunding of Obamacare attached.”
Democrats would used a “discharge petition,” which forces a House vote if a majority of Representatives signs it, to try to force the issue.
“Previously, it was thought this could not work, because a discharge petition takes 30 legislative days to ripen, so if this were tried with the clean CR that passed the Senate, this couldn’t bear fruit until some time in November. But now House Democrats say they have found a previously filed bill to use as a discharge petition — one that would fund the government at sequester levels.”
Roll Call has more on the procedural move.
Wonder if someone heard Bobfr’s call to action??!!
Df, this is where the rubber will hit the road for all those so-called ‘moderate’ Republicans who say they will vote for a clean CR. Somehow I doubt any of them will have the guts to join with Dems on this, even though many of them have publicly claimed that they are willing to fund the government with a clean CR. If we keep up the pressure, maybe they’ll be shamed to deliver, but it’s only going to happen in districts where a real threat exists that this will hurt them in 2014. I sure hope there are 18 of them.
df, I think it’s likely to happen. One thing for sure, we will now know if any Rs actually place Country before Party, as Jackie notes.
From Roll Call link, ibid:
“Updated: 3:13 p.m. | House Democrats are moving ahead with a plan to discharge a GOP bill that automatically funds the government, advancing a course that could eventually end the government shutdown — if enough Republicans cooperate.
Democrats announced Friday afternoon that they would file a discharge petition on a bill sponsored by Rep. James Lankford, R-Okla., that has been waiting for action by the Appropriations Committee since March.
The discharge petition would not simply adopt the Lankford bill, which would give 100 percent funding for 120 days before exacting a 1 percent cut every 90 days if the government does not produce funding bills.
Instead, the discharge petition would offer language to substitute Lankford’s bill with a clean CR to Nov. 15. Democrats think they have the votes for the plan.”
More at the link.
Well, Bob, the Dems under Pelosi always did know how to count, unlike Boehner.
It would surprise me if those dissenting GOP members would actually do more than just object in private. My thoughts are they will privately go along with the Dems then chicken out in the end. Too worried about getting primaries by Teaparty candidates.
Saw posted that Limbaugh asked his listeners to crash servers for Obamacare. My thoughts are maybe some will actually look at it while doing his bidding and decide to sign up.

Boehner Suggests Taking The Country Into Default Unless Republicans Get Additional Spending Cuts
House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) raised the idea of taking the country into default if Republicans don’t get more spending cuts during a press conference on Friday.
I thought he said yesterday he wouldn’t do that? Honestly, this man needs professional help.
I was wondering if he remembers what he says from day to day — minute to minute even.
Or is it that the words roll off his tongue depending on who his audience is?
LH, he…still…does…not…get that the president won’t negotiate. Both the president and Senate have said they will sit down and discuss a budget, but only AFTER the government is funded and the debt ceiling is raised. Boehner is going deeper and deeper into the pit and he’s not going to find his way out.

Senior Republicans were for “clean” CRs before they were against them.
Conservative Republicans have been pushing “automatic” continuing resolutions going back at least to the 1995-96 government shutdown era. The idea was popular on the right because an automatic freeze of government spending would take a shutdown off the table, lessening the leverage appropriators had to increase spending or include extraneous items.
Indeed, a GOP bill — now sponsored by leadership’s sophomore darling James Lankford of Oklahoma, and once sponsored by the likes of Reps. Jeb Hensarling of Texas and Paul D. Ryan of Wisconsin and former Sen. Jim DeMint — would automatically fund 100 percent of the government for 120 days in the absence of appropriations bills. The bill would be “clean” in that it wouldn’t have any riders. But after 90 days, it would cut government by 1 percent for every 90 days there aren’t appropriations bills.
Republicans going back years have praised the idea as a way to prevent either party from exploiting a government shutdown.
I know we are all a bit stressed, maybe depressed, with all the insanity of the GOP.
I just saw this piece on BBC World, and if we can get past the dying of the conservative beast, we’re on the verge of a world imagined only in Star Trek.
Watch, enjoy, and think.
I enjoyed that. I used to watch him on TV when I was a kid. I hope he’s right about the gardens and lack of pollution but the databanks are a little scary. My thought is, wouldn’t it be nice if you could have your blood monitored every day and any chemical imbalances could be put right at once? Thinking about the number of people who are affected by illness and especially mental illness and the terrible toll it’s taking on the sufferers and society and for the most part it’s preventable. I’m excited about the brain mapping project that the President spoke about that was mentioned here not too long ago. We have so much to learn and we are at a very exciting place right now. I love to think about the future. I pray for a long life mostly because I’m curious and I don’t want to leave the earth before some of my questions have been answered. I think I’ll encourage my kid to get a 3D printer at some point. I told him it was not practical but I realize I was wrong. I’m sure my parents would have laughed if I had ever suggested to them that one day I would have multiple computers in my house and even some tiny ones that could be carried around in a pocket. The world is moving so fast but it is so exciting!! Another thing. I like meat and fish but I would like it to be grown in a factory. I’d prefer that to the feeding, breeding and slaughtering that we take for granted right now. Not preaching. Just saying, that’s my preference.
Anyway, thanks for the interesting link. A nice break from the madness.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY sherijr!!!
Believe it or not, some of these kooks actually think what they are doing in Dc is work; work worthy of a salary! /smh/
Rep. Lee Terry, R-Neb., was blunt when asked if he would continue collecting his paychecks during the shutdown.
“Dang straight,” he said.
Terry suggested it’s an irrelevant question because the situation would be resolved before long.
What about the other members who were donating or forgoing their pay?
“Whatever gets them good press,” Terry said. “That’s all that it’s going to be. God bless them. But you know what? I’ve got a nice house and a kid in college, and I’ll tell you we cannot handle it. Giving our paycheck away when you still worked and earned it? That’s just not going to fly.”
He acknowledged that many federal employees aren’t getting paid because of the shutdown.
Other lawmakers from Iowa and Nebraska felt differently.
“I think that’s a gimmick,” Sen. Deb Fischer, R-Neb., said when asked about members forgoing or donating pay during the shutdown. “I think it’s theatrics. It doesn’t do anything to solve the problem, and if you have followed my public service career, you will know that I don’t do gimmicks.”
Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, also expressed no plans to give up his salary.
“We’re coming to work, though, so as long as we’re working, we ought to get paid,” Harkin said.
A spokesman for Sen. Mike Johanns, R-Neb., said the senator already donates more to charity per year than he would earn during the shutdown.
Like the people that are furloughed because of them don’t have a mortgage or kids in college…..a bunch of used ass wipes all of them.
Exactly jojo! It’s these kinds of statements that drive me up a wall! They are so fortunate that I’m not anywhere near the Capital building
Both Terry and Harkin as well as 24 other Congress people are so rich they can afford Berkshire Hathaway Stock at $170,000.00 +. Almost the entire salary they receive for the year.
Are stock owners…..they can cry me a river.
I know. The thoughtless callousness of some of the things GOPs say is stunning. The last line of this particular article has a spokesperson saying his boss gives more to CHARITY yearly than his shutdown salary would be (so he wouldn’t be giving it up)! The comparison to charity really angered me for some strange reason.

LAS VEGAS — LAS VEGAS (AP) — The number of initial foreclosure notices in Nevada spiked just before Oct. 1, the day a state law that adds more steps for lenders seeking to foreclose took effect.
Tracking website LVDefault.com counted more than 3,700 notices of default in Clark County in September, more than triple the 1,149 the site counted in August, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Notices reached a one-day high Sept. 30, when they hit 934, and then dropped to 25 on Tuesday, when the Homeowner’s Bill of Rights was enacted.

oops…copied to much….yikes !
I hope someone is keeping a tally of the heartless GOP who have no problems shutting down the govt, with absolutely NO consideration of how their capricious votes affect their constituents.
This is the rep that I thought represented Fort Bragg NC (7,000 civilian layoffs). Dudette set me straight, Fort Bragg’s congresscritter is David Price.
But NC is a PURPLE state. Don’t let Fayetteville voters forget this, next year at this time of year.

Debbie Wasserman-Schultz also said that she will accept her salary.
Congresscritters don’t have a choice. There’s some rule or another that requires that they get paid.
But their aides (who need it more than the critter) do not.
See above re Rick Nolan, D-Minn, who introduced a bill to close this loophole.
It’s the whining and crowing that is heartless and offensive.
I know. I’m pointing out that some Dems are publicly stating they are accepting their salaries. Since it requires an act of Congress to change or defer their salaries, why is it a big deal that pubs are saying that they’re accepting the salary? We have Dems saying the same thing. I just think we should be careful when we point out what we think are flaws in the pub ranks, when folks in our own party are doing the same. Especially, when we know that they have to take the salary. I just don’t like selective partisan criticism.
“…. why is it a big deal that pubs are saying that they’re accepting the salary? We have Dems saying the same thing….”
It’s a big deal because it’s the Republicans who have deliberately shut-down the government and deprived almost a million federal employees their pay! That’s why it’s important to point out their hypocrisy! Debbie Wasserman-Schultz did not orchestrate a government shut down.
My only point is that they HAVE to take their salaries, so why point it out that they are going to do so? If we are going to do that, then we leave ourselves open to have our own reps being accused of the same thing. To me, this is a distraction argument and can too easily be turned so that our folks have to defend the same position that we are arguing against. The pubs are doing enough to harm themselves, they don’t need us to give them a shiny object to point to.
We agree on who is to blame. The only reason that clip of Debbie WS was shown of her saying she’s accepting her salary, was a result of folks complaining about pubs taking theirs. Though an important one, this is a side issue that we don’t want to take over the real issue of how the pubs are holding the country hostage by refusing to vote on a clean CR.
4 Dem Congress people from Ct. are donating their salaries to charities.
I’m sorry to be so cynical, but these same people that are struggling to put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads will still run out and vote for the same motherfuckers that put them in the position they are in now. Even with Obamacare, the same motherfuckers are going to vote against their own best interest.
CNN brings in Zimmerman’s lawyer Mark O’Mara to say the DC police over reacted yesterday.
I feel bad that that poor woman was killed and her child that had to witness the death of his/her mom, but a car used to run down and where a DC police officer and a SS agent were hit, the car was being used as a deadly weapon. If these two were killed there would be no discussion about “over reaction” or “deadly force”. I wish that her family could have stepped in to get her the help she apparently needed. Mark O’Mara has no credibility and he can’t offer any opinion when he thinks a sidewalk is a deadly weapon but not the gun in a killers hand who confronted an unarmed kid.
CNN continues to discredit themselves by bringing on the harbinger of injustice to speak about reactions by law enforcement. It just adds insult to injury. No doubt, this vile O’Mara character is a hero among right wing circles.
I am almost as disgusted with our media as I am with the Tea/GOP. Here’s an article from AJE that speaks to why “false equivalency” is toxic and keeps the American people, who rely on the MSM, stupid. Well my word is “stupid”.
I work in a Federal Prison, I am not getting paid but I still have to come to work. I’m lucky in that my wife and I make a pretty decent living so we will be okay. But I’m worried about some of my coworkers that are not in the same position as I am. It’s hard to worry about where your next meal is coming from or when you’ll get your next paycheck and still do your job.
President Obama has your back.:)
White House supports the retroactive payment of furloughed workers, says Obama would sign HR 3223: http://t.co/nvG9NZ9O37— Hayes Brown (@HayesBrown) October 04, 2013
I really don’t mind people in Congress saying they will kep their paycheck. For some, it is their main income. The difference ebwteen what thye GOPer say and the DEMs say is, howevetr, significant.
GOPers don’t mention those people who are working without pay or have been furloughed at all.
The Dems will almost always say they want this over so those peopl cn be paid and acknowledge the hardships being gone through.
In response to the ever-reasonable Japa21, repeating myself.
This morning (7 am west coast) the CBS World News roundup (radio) had 2 reporters in Fort Bragg NC and Joshua Tree CA, areas hard-hit by the st hutdown.
At Fort Bragg NC, 7,000 civilian workers are laid off.
At Joshua Tree, a clerk at a local camping gear store said 1/3 of their business is in Oct and Nov (too dang hot during the summer — it’s kind of in between the low desert of Palm Springs and the high desert plateau of the Mojave Desert).
She said that they usually have over 100 customers a day this time of year. Yesterday they had 5. She will no longer be going to work starting next week if the shutdown continues.
President Obama will reinstate backpay for federal workers, but I don’t know if that covers civilian employees of the Federal government and it definitely doesn’t cover private small businesses like the person interviewed at Joshua Tree.
I read that earlier and it is definitely one of the underreported aspects of this shut down. Which is unfortuante. There is a segment of the population that thinks government workers are moochers, lazy grifters. But they don’t realize that a lot of people not employed by government rely for their living on a lot of what the government does.
And I am not ever-reasonable. Sometimes I can be downright irrationale.
Let’s see how this rolls along……..

While the children are throwing tantrums, the adults are putting together a strategy. I wish Nancy, Harry, et al the very best in closing this loop hole with this discharge petition!
I’m not hopeful. We’d need 18 Republicans to stand up to their party. There may be enough of them to vote for a clean CR if Boehner brings it up, but not to buck the party and sign on with Dem’s. I’d be really, really surprised.
And Boehner’s digging in even deeper on the debt ceiling today. Remember, we hung a lot of hope on what some unnamed Republican said yesterday. They may really crash the world economy. Again.
waiting to see how much progress this gets

So Boehner's "modest" final debt limit demand is going to be Lite version of the Devil's Xmas Tree offered last week. bit.ly/16nVakG— Ed Kilgore (@ed_kilgore) October 04, 2013
Well, 57, that ‘plan’ is dead on arrival at the Senate, let alone White House.
Fact is, that as of this afternoon, Leader Pelosi is advancing a discharge petition that will not only substitute language for a clean CR but also language for a clean debt ceiling increase (likely large enough to extend to Jan 2015).
It’ll take a week, but the very fact that it is being done is even more reason why Senator Reid and President Obama have zero reason to deal with Boehner.
What we must do is keep the pressure on Republican Reps – intense pressure.
Sorry Bob, the discharge petition is going nowhere. I do believe there are enough ‘moderate’ Republicans to vote a clean CR if Boner brought it to the floor, but I cannot fathom that there are 20 Republicans who buck their party, leadership and the poison of Fox and the rest to actually sign on with Dem’s.
I believe they are capable of causing crashing the world economy again.
Let’s be clear on one thing: if they do, it will take half a century for America to regain its place of leadership, and that’s only if we have nothing but Democratic majorities from now on.
Intense pressure is the only possibility. Off to tweet that right now.

There are a couple of sentences here and there that made me wiggle my nose, but otherwise I think you will find points to identify with in this post.
” Republicans just don’t get this guy. They think and say many things, most of them negative. But I’ve never heard or read a conservative analyst thoughtfully, carefully working through a somewhat balanced list of strengths and weaknesses. Every great general is scrupulously fair in his analysis of his opponents in the field. If this general fails to perceive a key strength or weakness, accurately reported, it could mean disaster. Why is this sort of careful analysis almost completely absent from GOP thinking about our President? Even an adversary that you despise needs to be looked at carefully for possible craftiness or stratagem that might upset your plans. Yes, anger felt passionately can blunt your “people reading” capacities. But I think it’s something more – it’s contempt, utter and profound contempt. If someone is “beneath contempt”, you need pay him no mind, for he can and will be swept away.
The GOP figuratively and literally cannot see who Obama is. Part of it is developmental (as I have written) – they literally don’t see the world as he sees it and cannot connect to the vision and images he offers. But contempt creates another and deeper level of “distancing” from the subject under review. To Republicans, the President speaks a different language and probably comes from a different planet – which of course he quite literally did.
So where does this “not seeing” lead? It leads to deeply flawed reading of the opponent’s strengths and weaknesses. ……………..
The same can be said about the DC/NY Pundits and Journos. Hence the disrespect, the crap about emoting, the eagerness to entertain birtherism, the religion of this POTUS, assigning 9-10 Katrina memes…..total underestimating this president and relentlessly questioning his Motives, actions and his honesty/integrity.
VC, I think Stuart is absolutely correct in his analysis. The contempt for the president by Republicans is deep and inflexible and it does blind them to the reality of the president’s character and the forcefulness of his leadership. This misreading of the president will be their doom and I only hope it comes sooner rather than later. I loved the last line of this article about the Dem chances of regaining the House.
He is correct. I love the way Stuart approaches his chosen topics. I also love the ‘subtitle’ of his blog – ‘Looking at the World With Clear and Quiet Eyes’ and the restfulness his chosen colours create. There are some really good, smart, clear-thinking people on our side of the aisle.
EVEN REPUBLICANS BLAME REPUBLICANS FOR THE SHUTDOWN
By Bridge Project
As we look back on this week, four days into the government shutdown, an unlikely bipartisan consensus has emerged in Washington: Extreme Tea Party Republicans are to blame for putting hundreds of thousands of people out of work and depriving millions of services they depend on.
It is clear to objective observers that while Democrats have already compromised by swallowing post-sequester funding levels they despise, intransigent Tea Party Republicans refuse to budge from their position. The Republicans’ so-called leaders are unwilling to allow a vote to fund the government at current levels, which would pass, unless they can strip funding away from the Affordable Care Act – funding that has already been appropriated by Congress and is unrelated to the bills currently being debated.
Today’s moment of squeeee (for us geeks anyway):

“We must lead by example,” said the piece in the New England Journal of Medicine, written by the magazine’s editor-in-chief Jeffrey Drazen and executive editor Gregory Curfman.
The journal itself does not take a position on the reform package, known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or Obamacare, and aimed at offering cheaper health insurance to tens of millions of uninsured Americans.
However, as doctors practicing in a northeastern state that has had a similar program in place for years, “we strongly support it,” they said.
I may be wrong, but I don’t recall Speaker Nan ever putting something up, without knowing to the person, that she had the votes. She didn’t need anything like a Hastart rule to whip up votes. That being said, I wonder if she already knows who the ‘pubs are that would make an attempt at a discharge petition successful. Seems odd she’d be so public announcing her intent.
