The tweet by Kenyon upthread, where he says with Ocare he pays half of what he’s paying under his employer’s insurance. I thought unless your employer’s insurance was more than 9.5% of your income, then you didn’t qualify for Ocare. Is that right, or is it that you don’t qualify for a subsidy?

“Republicans say we have more government than we need. I say we have more republicans than we need!”

I truly and absolutely love this tweet, JOB! What this great country of ours needs, more than any thing else, is fewer and fewer Republicans. Exhibit #1: Just look at how well California is doing. No more budget crises! Deficit wiped out! Our state slowly on the road to economic recovery. Why? We have fewer Republicans than ever in the state legislature causing a stink and trying to shut down our state government! If the “holier than thou progressives” had any common sense they wouldn’t have undermined President Obama and the Democrats in the 2010 mid-term elections. If Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats were in control of the Congress, “Happy Days” would certainly be “here again.”

        October 4, 2013 at 9:06 pm

Ahhh. That was masterful, nath! Gave me HOPE for the freakin’ future. I say we wipe out 75% of the R’s in Congress, keep the rest around for little “insights” – so we don’t swing too far left – and not allow them bigger numbers until they prove they are ready to help, not hurt, the country again. I do believe in the two-party system so the pendulum doesn’t swing too far in either direction, but this is ridiculous. And harmful. And, yes, love what California is doing with the Dems in charge!

I followed that link, and once again I’m impressed with the glimpses of Barack Obama that those who report honestly about their dealings with him reveal. His integrity is always obvious – he’s honest, sincere, and not afraid to deal with people face to face/one on one. I also found it interesting that Hillary didn’t approach Sharpton herself, Bill did; whereas Barack made his own approach yet did not beg Sharpton to support him.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention, PF58.

I was trying to watch Politics Nation today, but had to turn it off. Rev Al was interviewing a GOP House Rep from FL that ended up in a shouting match. That was followed by another segment with two attorneys on both sides of an SUV and motorcycle gang road rage incident who were equally combative. Guess my level of tolerance was so low I could not take it so turned it off.

Actually, 99, I don’t think our democracy is dying. It is certainly being challenged by the plutocrat-fueled #Teabagger terrorists. However, that challenge is causing many Americans to band together. The #GOP has not only gone way out on limb, they’ve poisoned it. We will now trim that dead branch from the Liberty tree in 2014.

I so hope you are right Bob – I have never seen so much of politicians wanting to overthrow laws that have been legitimately passed by all levels of government. You have been closer to this than me for a very long time – I have no personal memory of the shut down during the Clinton Presidency – but what is happening now is scaring me – perhaps because I cannot imagine the things that the GOP wants to happen to the people of the US – or perhaps because at this time of life I am personally being seriously impacted by what is happening.

The Atlantic Wire has a good live-blog of the shutdown. They describe bills, number of votes, have some tweets, talk about what’s happening. Not everything, but pretty interesting. Newest updates are at the beginning of the article.

Shutdown Liveblog: Democrats Scheme to Force a ‘Clean’ Vote

    http://www.theatlanticwire.com/politics/2013/10/shutdown-debate-it-happens/70028/

Today 3:36 p.m.: The Democrats’ attempt to force a short-term CR to fund the government failed on Friday, no Republicans voted with Democrats on a procedural vote that would have brought the CR to the floor. There are currently two plans in place to force a vote on the CR, which Democrats would very much like to do instead of continuing to vote on a series of “mini” bills to fund popular parts of the Government. For the next plan, Democrats will need 218 votes to start something called a “discharge petition.” That plan would allow Democrats to bring the “clean” CR to a vote on October 14 at the earliest.

  16. October 4, 2013 at 7:54 pm

Bob or anyone else: Heard a caller on Stephanie’s or Ed’s show yesterday. …..saying PO can sign a continuing government act or something close to that. He said something about Homeland Security. I was doing something in kitchen and didn’t hear clearly everything he said. Anyone know anything about this?

    • October 4, 2013 at 8:03 pm

Have no idea what that person was referring, Tnmtngirl.

What I do know is that the President has indicated that, even regarding the debt ceiling, he is not going to rely on any remedy – like invoking the 14th or minting a platinum coin valued in the trillions – to save, effectively, Boehner’s butt.

What we are witnessing goes way beyond our economy. This is a direct assault on our Constitutional Democracy. The President knows it. The longer Boehner enables the damage the weaker he becomes. The President knows it. Expect no conciliatory action from the White House. It may be that we get very, very close to a default (with attendant downgrade, etc.) before Boehner caves. That will be tragic, but nothing compared to what would happen to the Office of the Presidency if Barack Obama doesn’t defend it to the end.

The next ~ 12 days are going to separate the children from the adults in a way not experienced by Americans since 1861.

You hit it right on the head. PBO is not going to give any concessions not just because it would damage what he is trying to do, but it would legitimize this tactic for Congresses to use against future administrations.

I have immense confidence in the courage and strength of President Obama. But I hope his fellow democrats in Congress don’t stab him in the back when the tension mounts during the next 12 days…

      • 79 nathkatun7
        October 4, 2013 at 10:37 pm

You know Bob, I’ve read and re read the 14th Amendment and I just don’t see how President Obama can invoke it when Section 5 of the 14th Amendment plainly states that it’s the Congress that has the power to enforce all sections of the Amendment by appropriate legislation. Sadly, our lazy and incompetent media keep insisting on making passing the budget and raising the debt ceiling to be issues between President Obama and the Republicans. That’s not the case. It’s Congress, and not the Executive, which is solely charged with the responsibility of financing the government and paying the debts of the United States. Trying to attach the repeal/defunding of ACA, a law that was passed and appropriately funded 3 years ago, as a pre-condition for passing a budget to finance the government now is a total dereliction of duty by the Congress. The same is true of all the demands, such as approving the Keystone oil pipeline, that Republicans are making before agreeing to pay the nations debt. Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution is very clear about the duty of Congress to pay the nation’s debt.

        • October 4, 2013 at 11:10 pm

“Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution is very clear about the duty of Congress to pay the nation’s debt.”

Yes it is, nath, and that is why our very skillful Constitutional lawyer and President told Leader Pelosi and others – a long time ago – that he would not invoke the 14th. And, that has been strongly re-iterated by SoT Lew and others.

Our Constitutional Democracy is on the line and our President knows it.

The next 14-17 days will comprise as defining a moment in the history of America as any in its past.

          #FORWARD

    • October 4, 2013 at 8:16 pm

I think that it is necessary to do as PBO said…to break the fever….they have to fail…be beaten….if the DEMS can make the discharge resolution to work…that would be the first nail in the coffin …because it will require members of the GOP to take a stand against the fringe of their party that is out to destroy our government

what’s the process for getting the needed signatures? Does the House have to be in session? Is it electronic signatory? I can’t wait for the results of this one. I just don’t think Nancy would attempt this without knowing the outcome. She’s never not had the votes she’s needed for anything she stuck her neck out for.

        • October 4, 2013 at 8:33 pm

Well, it will be tricky. It’s one thing to say you’d vote for a clean CR and another thing to sign a petition against your own so-called Speaker to bring the petition to the floor. But my fingers are definitely crossed.

          • 87 cookemom
            October 4, 2013 at 8:41 pm

mine too! I just can’t see Nancy and Chris tweeting this out if they didn’t have the numbers. They’d leave themselves and a lot of Dem advantage just hanging. It’d be called a bluff that failed. So do they sign one by one Monday on the floor, or are the names read on the House floor after having gotten signaturee’s approval? Seems to me that Boehner must know they have the signatures and this is a way for him to save face, by just calling for the vote on the clean CR. Poor guy, he’s probably three sheets to the wind by now.

            • October 4, 2013 at 8:49 pm

This whole thing is such a big mess it’s hard to really get a sense of what’s going on. But I agree, it’s unlikely Nancy Smash or Chris VH would be public about it if they didn’t think it had a chance to work.

          • 89 nathkatun7
            October 4, 2013 at 10:54 pm

Well, meta, this is the time to see if the so called responsible Republicans really exist. If they do they will step right up and do the right thing to re-open the government. We keep hearing that there are so many sane and moderate Republicans who are fed-up with the radical tea-baggers who are bent on destroying this country. If they don’t step up and sign a discharge petition to vote on a clean CR then we will know that it’s the entire Republican Party that has totally lost it’s mind.

Personally, I am very glad that Nancy Pelosi and Chris Van Hollen are bringing this discharge petition to force the so called moderate and sane Republicans to come out of the shadows. If they fail to step up then they can no longer go around blaming the tea baggers. I don’t think the Democrats have anything to lose.

            • October 4, 2013 at 11:07 pm

“Personally, I am very glad that Nancy Pelosi and Chris Van Hollen are bringing this discharge petition to force the so called moderate and sane Republicans to come out of the shadows. If they fail to step up then they can no longer go around blaming the tea baggers.”

That’s the essence of the strategy, nath. And, even Rs in ‘Red’ Districts will have to think about just how powerful the opposition will be if that opposition can paint them as willing participants in destroying the American economy and threatening our Constitutional Democracy.

2014 is just around the corner and they know it.

As to mechanism, all each Member has to do is sign and that process is very simple for those that want to do it.

    Not a Clue
    //………
Boehner simply does not recognize that the President is not bargaining, or making a preliminary offer, when he says he won’t negotiate the debt ceiling raise. Obama, and fellow Democrats believe hostage-taking, particularly in regards to the debt ceiling, must end. The GOP cannot even see this position – not one conservative columnist I’ve read has even considered the idea that Obama is taking a stand on principle, from which he will not waver.

well, VP Joe tried to warn them when he said PBO has a spine of steel and had an iron fist in a velvet glove. You’d think they would see the fate of the pirates, pumas, Bin Laden, and all of the number 2 ranked members of Al Queda and give pause.

‘You’d think they would see the fate of…’

Cookem, I just told you they don’t really see or hear (him in action)! IMO, apart from lacking insight and just being plain dumb, they are too busy practising their own game rules and setting up for photo-ops to look at what’s really happening.

yeah I guess so. None is so blind as he who will not see.

You’re right. This is late nite on the computer machine for me. I usually watch TV in the pm, but there’s just nothing on tonight that suits my fancy.

Well, I’m going to leave you soon as I’ve been hunched over the ‘puter the entire day! I don’t watch TV, so I’m going to read a little before trying to sleep – to give my back a rest.

Very well said. Or they listen to him but they project their own “way of thinking” on him. They’re so convinced that politics is a “game”, they are absolutely persuaded that President Obama is playing some kind of game. Incredible that after 4 years and a half they still don’t get that this president is DIFFERENT. That he means what he says. That what he says in public is THE SAME THING that he says in private.

They’ve never covered a president who is such a straight-shooter. Clinton wasn’t a bad president but let’s admit it, he loved playing games, and he was able to talk on both sides of his mouth.

Frankly, LoveP, I don’t think these guys have known or dealt with anyone, president or otherwise, who has been a straight-shooter! Sometimes I feel that in a way I cannot blame them for projecting their thinking on to PBO because that’s all they know.

Their actions remind me of this quote I saw that I believe totally epitomizes the US media

“One of the most detestable habits of Lilliputian minds is to find their own littleness in others.”~ Honoré de Balzac

Plus, all GOP proposals – if you can call them that – will harm Americans. Will actually add more harm than they’ve already done to Americans. And I don’t see the President making deals just for the sake of making a deal.

Man, there’s a bad fire in Napa that has been affecting the air quality in SF. Last night I thought my street was burning down the smoke was so bad and Napa is many miles away. I hope they have all the help they need. Let’s all BLESS FIRST RESPONDERS.

In 1861 Abe Lincoln in a letter written to Senator from NH John Hale.

“What is our present condition? We have just carried an election on principles fairly stated to the people. Now we are told in advance, the government shall be broken up, unless we surrender to those we have beaten . . . . In this they are either attempting to play upon us, or they are in dead earnest. Either way, if we surrender, it is the end of us, and of the government. They will repeat the experiment upon us ad libitum. . . . [A]nd they can never have a more shallow pretext for breaking up the government, or extorting a compromise, than now.”

This was when secession was raging and coming from the South.

That is precisely what is going on today by the TBGOPers.

This why president Obama Can’t allow his Nihilation and the order of our governance to be destroyed by John Boehner and his Coup d’etat political plotters.

See mile wide tornado doing major damage in Iowa tonight, still active at present. Here’s what’s left of one small community—-not much, total devastation.
