Day 5 of #AmericaHeldHostage -#GOPConference waiting for Pres @BarackObama to rescue their egos washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-par… Seriously???— Bill R (@cmpnwtr) October 05, 2013
Bill, one of the best lines in this article is “they only listen to half of what he said.” Republicans don’t listen at all. They hear what they want to hear and presume what they want to presume. To actually listen to the president, they’d have to respect him, which they do not. They stuck themselves in this hole and the president isn’t going to throw them a lifeline, no matter how hard they stamp their feet and call him names.
You know, one of my realisms in life based on those I know is : People in general are terrible listeners. Many people just listen for a few minutes then assume the rest of what will be said then come away with their own perception. They usually do not even let the person talking finish what they say before interrupting and arguing their own point. When reading they just read the headings or first paragraph before summarizing the rest to match their own beliefs in their own mind. That is why the GOP talking points work. That is why the misleading headlines of the MSM can give an entirely different twist on the truth and the details are hidden further in the article. Also a lot of people form their own stories based on their own life experiences. Greed and selfishness are more naturally gravitated towards than sharing and compassion are. People take what they hear or what they think they heard and use that towards reinforcing their own beliefs. Given these perceptions you can see why even religious people can reinterpret the Bible and it’s teachings. It also explains why a lot of older people have a hard time with change and become cynics. Being open to new ideas is not as natural as becoming closed minded. These are all my own opinions based on trying to wrestle with why there are so many uninformed, yet stubborn, cynical people that I deal with in my own life.
Excellent commentary – Obama Grandmama.
I plead guilty. Thank you for this gentle reminder.

Who else is adamant about keeping their paycheck? Representative Lee Terry (R-NE).
When asked if he would keep his paycheck, he said “dang straight.” And that’s not all.
What about the other members who were donating or forgoing their pay?
“Whatever gets them good press,” Terry said. “That’s all that it’s going to be. God bless them. But you know what? I’ve got a nice house and a kid in college, and I’ll tell you we cannot handle it. Giving our paycheck away when you still worked and earned it? That’s just not going to fly.”
Oh. Well, shit. He worked and he earned it. He has a nice house and a kid in college. Giving up his paycheck voluntarily isn’t going to fly.
I suppose the federal employees that Rep. Lee Terry and his colleagues have put out of a job or out of pay didn’t earn it. And I’m sure none of them have homes or kids in school either, right? They aren’t real people and those aren’t real jobs.

Isn’t this interesting? I saw this from the last thread – Meta found this man who figured out which dems didn’t sign the letter demanding a clean CR.
The Dems who didn't sign the "clean CR" letter are: Mike McIntyre, Jim Matheson, Jon Barrow, Ron Kind. Remarkable whip job by Pelosi.— (@Taniel) October 05, 2013
They figured out that there was one missing (GOOD JOB META!) and so he found the missing person and added his name;
There's a 5th Dem who didn't sign "clean CR" letter: Jim Cooper. So the full list is: Cooper, McIntyre, Matheson, Kind, Barrow.— (@Taniel) October 05, 2013
I figured that if these guys are anyone’s congress critters they could call or tweet them.
Oooohhh, thank you, a4alice!
If we have 195 who signed the petition or consented to sign the petition, then we need 23 more votes.
There are 21 Rs saying they support a clean CR but that doesn’t mean they’ll join the petition.
This will be a tough one.
Hmmm. So that means that some of these 5 have to cross over or there needs to be some republicans who will join
but at least their lack of signing will be on record – they say one thing but can’t stand up when they have to vote (commercials for 2014)
remember the longer-term picture of targeting the more vulnerable “moderate” republican”
I wonder if when Miller said they had people who would sign, he took into consideration (or knew about ) these 5 who didn’t sign. Does that mean these 5 won’t sign or that they haven’t signed as of yet?
Rep Miller was referring to signatures on the Discharge Petition, not this letter. He is as disciplined a whip as is Steny Hoyer and Leader Pelosi so my expectation is that, given how strongly the President, Senator Reid & Leader Pelosi have been regarding ‘having the votes’ they know they have at least 218 and probably more, irrespective of these 5 signing/voting for the clean CR. I’ve been incorrect before, but think this assessment is consistent with what we’ve been hearing for more than a week – the votes are there no matter what it takes to get the Senate bill to the floor.
Thanks for the clarification Bobfr.
You’re welcome and hopefully the speculative part is not far from the truth!
I will remain optimistic.
eggsactly!! Speaker P has never called a vote that didn’t pass.
It certainly looks tough, Meta, if these renegade Democrats don’t change their minds. Even if all 21 Rs who support a clean CR sign that’s not enough to constitute a majority required to file a successful discharge petition.
GOP can’t be let off the hook for ensuring a functioning government. Yes, these five Dems didn’t sign the CR letter, but how many GOP didn’t sign it? We can’t hold Democrats to a higher level of accountability than the GOP. While these give Dems must answer for their decision not to push for a clean CR, we can’t be distracted from the fact that the GOP caused the shutdown and are refusing the re-open the government.
yep, so true. for whatever reasons that they didn’t sign on, we shouldn’t attack them from the left. We attack the opposing party always. I’m sure Nancy P knows who she needs and has no doubt excused them. Unlike pubs, we aren’t about the primary as much as we are the national numbers we need.
Theo you’re right – those Republican (especially these 32 in this article: http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2013/10/32-republicans-who-caused-the-government-shutdown/280236/ ) need to get harangued as much as possible. Boehner and Cantor the most. But having said that, I am curious as to why these 5 Dems chose not to sign with their compatriots. If I lived in their district I’d ask them. And then, I’d tell them how disappointed I was with them and would politely urge them to sign and support Pelosi and their fellows.
But, I do agree Theo that the focus is on these Republicans holding the country hostage.
has the NY Times article been revised?
article now indicates that one The Navy SEAL Team attacked the al-Shabab stronghold in Somalia, killed some one but it is not clear if it is the leader they wanted to capture.
expecting an more complete report later
Linda – this is how the NYTimes has revised the earlier story – as of 1715 ET:
“The Shabab leader was believed to have been killed in the firefight, but the SEALS were forced to withdraw before that could be confirmed, a senior American official said.”
And, in that version they do not make any note of their earlier claim that the leader had been captured. Just changed the text.
if he is alive (The Guardian Claimed earlier that he was Chechen) we will know.
at least in both reports, there is confirmation that someone was killed “by a foreign team that fought for about an hour”

The suspect, born Nazih Abd al Hamid al-Ruqhay and known by his nom de guerre Abu Anas el-Liby, has been high on the list of the United States government’s most-wanted fugitives since at least 2000, when a New York court indicted him for his part in planning the embassy attacks. The F.B.I. had offered a bounty of up to $5 million for information leading to his capture.

Dem rep throws the “unpatriotic” meme back in Republicans’ faces
Former Army National Guard general and Rep. Bill Enyart (D-Ill.) ripped into his GOP colleagues on Thursday, accusing them of being disingenuous in their efforts to pass a bill that would restore funding only for select military personnel payments that are currently in jeopardy due to the ongoing government shutdown.
In a speech from the House floor, Enyart, a freshman and 35-year military veteran, blasted the “absolute, utter cynicism” of the “Honoring Our Promise to America’s Veterans Act,” which later passed a House vote with Democratic support. Senate Democrats have insisted that they won’t support a piecemeal approach to dampening the blow of the shutdown, instead calling for Republicans in the House to pass a clean government funding bill to reopen the government in its entirety.
“The only thing that bill does is give the politicians who sponsored it and who vote for it a claim while they wrap themselves in the flag to say they support the troops,” Enyart said, pointing out that the underlying bill actually contained cuts to key veterans programs. “It’s as phony as putting a flag pin on your lapel and claiming that makes you a patriot.”
I’ve been busy preparing to follow my daughter on her assignment to Sembach, Germany. I was so excited because I love Germany and Sembach is only 4 hours from Paris. Yesterday, because of sequestration, all orders were canceled. So you know I totally agree with Rep. Enyart.

So that’s two – apparently.
Two raids in two countries net two of the world’s most-wanted terrorists
By Jim Miklaszewski, Pete Williams and Robert Windrem , NBC News
In twin raids in Africa on Saturday, U.S. commandos captured two of the world’s most-wanted terrorists – a senior al Qaeda official who allegedly planned 1998 embassy attacks in Kenya and Tanzania and a “high-level target” from Somalia’s al Shabaab, sources tell NBC News.
Word of the dual operations came in quick succession, with the sources first saying that U.S. Special Operations forces captured the unidentified “high-value target” during a pre-dawn raid on an al Shabaab stronghold in southern Somalia, striking back at the Islamic militant group blamed for the recent attack on a Kenyan shopping mall.

A short time later, sources said that U.S. forces also had captured Anas al Libi, a longtime al Qaeda member, near Tripoli, Libya. Al Libi, whose real name is Nazih Abdul-Hamed Nabih al-Ruqai’I, has been wanted for more than a decade by the U.S. and has a $5 million reward on his head.

nospin, that was the 1st thought that went through my mind. Given how risky both of these operations were, I don’t think President Obama would have been comfortable being out of DC, let alone the country because if either of them had ‘gone south’ he would be confronting a major mess.

Reminding that 19,000 Head Start kids—–so far—-are affected by the shutdown as many are forced to shut down. This interview makes clear that the parents of these kids are left in the lurch—-many work or are in school—-and depend on Head Start for the quality care it provides their children. And it’s not like they can afford to just hire a nanny in the meantime. My daughter said she heard one parent say she didn’t know what to do, didn’t want to lose her job, may be forced to take her kids to their grandma in N.Y. until this is settled. These parents are also grateful for and dependent on the 2 nutritious meals that their kids get at Head Start daily—-breakfast and lunch. The first school closings are those whose funding is on the Oct. 1 schedule. More will be affected the longer this goes on. Shutdown effects spread far and wide, making life miserable and impossible in many cases.

Looking back at the last three years since the Republicans took control of the House of Representatives, Hersh crunched the numbers and came to a shocking conclusion. If Republicans hadn’t forced austerity economics on the American people, unemployment for the month of September would be south of 6 percent with a net gain of around 250,000 new jobs being created. Starting with December of 2010, the month after a Republican landslide in the midterm elections, there would have been 2.4 million additional jobs added to the economy, bringing the total to 8.2 million.
Hersh continues to explain the dramatic difference in economic policy and how much stronger the recovery would have been had the Republicans not had such a successful election in 2010.

CAIRO — United States forces captured a leader of Al Qaeda indicted in the 1998 bombings of the United States embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, ending a 15-year manhunt by seizing him in broad daylight near the Libyan capital, American officials said.
The suspect, born Nazih Abd al Hamid al-Ruqhay and known by his nom de guerre, Abu Anas el-Liby, has been high on the list of the United States government’s most-wanted fugitives since at least 2000, when a New York court indicted him for his part in planning the embassy attacks. The F.B.I. had offered a bounty of up to $5 million for information leading to his capture.
Abu Anas was captured alive near Tripoli in a joint operation by the United States military, the C.I.A. and the F.B.I., and was in American custody, a United States official said.
His capture was the latest grave blow to what remains of the original Qaeda organization after a 12-year-old American campaign to capture or kill its leadership, including the killing two years ago of its founder, Osama Bin Laden, in a compound in Pakistan

Wicked weather dominated much of the American Midwest and westward on Friday.
A tornado laden storm shocked the people of Wayne, Nebraska, as afternoon turned to evening.
The National Weather Service reported Saturday, based on a preliminary assessment, that the Wayne twister produced EF-4 damage — which means it likely carried gusts of between 166 and 200 mph.
A few people sustained minor injuries, but luckily no one was killed, said mayor Ken Chamberlain.
The storm produced one or several tornadoes, officials said, that touched down in five spots.

This is really a very small matter, but sometimes we forget (or at least I do) all that the government does to benefit us. I’ve been getting some of those very annoying 1-800 calls over the last week. I’m on the “Do Not Call” list so I decided to lodge a complaint. I went to the “Do Not Call” web site and there was message that read, in essence, sorry we can’t help do the government shutdown. So this shutdown is causing small inconveniences and some very serious problems for a lot of people.
I saw a tweet from an idiot saying that he would be fine sending 50% of federal workers home permanently. He clearly is a person who speaks without knowing the subject matter, because he’s got no idea what the government actually does for him on a daily basis, or the fact that the private industry who would have to pick up the slack would do it for a much higher cost. Clueless.

French Intel now saying Al Shabab leader wasn't in HQ….but Libya Operation was 100% success— Jeff Gauvin (@JeffersonObama) October 05, 2013
So, as noted a few times above, until we receive official word from the WH or Pentagon we should remain skeptical of reports on the Somalia operation, for sure.
Rep. Peter King, who called fellow Republican Ted Cruz a ‘fraud,’ said his office is now receiving threatening phone calls from people who say they’re supporters of the Texas senator.
“You can’t always blame a person if his followers act in a terrible way,” King said on CNN’s “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.” However, he expressed concern about the “vile, obscene” nature of the phone calls.
“I have young women, women interns, full-timers, in their late teens, early 20s, and they get these phone calls,” he continued. He did not elaborate on how many calls were received.
Stay classy, Baggers.
