@SpeakerBoehner admits he lied to @SenatorReid . Honor is not a word the GOP is familiar with except with a dis- in front of it.— john miller (@deaconmill) October 06, 2013
So Republicans, MSM, are you going to call Peter King a liar?
As far as the ‘pubs are concerned, King is a dead man walking. He has been excommunicated from their ranks. He will be heavily primaried to his right, with the help of big money backers.
It’s time for the media to stop with that it’s both of them to blame B.S.
I just heard Treasury Secty Jack Lew on Candy Crowley’s State of the Union. He presents a chilling report on what we’re in for if the Pubs don’t do the right thing. Now she interviews legend in his own mind, Ted ‘Rafeal Cruising to Anonymity’ Cruz. He gives himself too much credit, but alas, not without encouragement.
IMO ‘young’ Rafael Cruz has been told he’s brilliant so often in the past (and maybe he was vis-a-vis his peers) that he’s swallowed it hook, line and sinker. He won many debating trophies, probably for some memorized spiel, that now he can’t do real life thinking and he really can’t see when his debating points are silly. That’s my opinion and I’m sticking with it, until he shows me otherwise.

Shortly after President Obama started his second term, a loose-knit coalition of conservative activists led by former Attorney General Edwin Meese III gathered in the capital to plot strategy. Their push to repeal Mr. Obama’s health care law was going nowhere, and they desperately needed a new plan.
Out of that session, held one morning in a location the members insist on keeping secret, came a little-noticed “blueprint to defunding Obamacare,” signed by Mr. Meese and leaders of more than three dozen conservative groups.
It articulated a take-no-prisoners legislative strategy that had long percolated in conservative circles: that Republicans could derail the health care overhaul if conservative lawmakers were willing to push fellow Republicans — including their cautious leaders — into cutting off financing for the entire federal government.
“We felt very strongly at the start of this year that the House needed to use the power of the purse,” said one coalition member, Michael A. Needham, who runs Heritage Action for America, the political arm of the Heritage Foundation. “At least at Heritage Action, we felt very strongly from the start that this was a fight that we were going to pick.”

Good morning. This has been a fantastic roundup this morning. You’ve no idea what a contribution you all make to keeping me abreast of the news without my having to muddle through all the garbage that’s out there. Thank you!
This is off topic, but wondering if this is anyone else’s experience. Went to the store this morning to buy some bacon…it was $7.59 a pound. One week ago it was $4.59. I was so gobsmacked I started looking around… milk $5.99 a gallon, cheapest eggs $3.29 dozen. Is this a result of the beleaguered farm bill, the shutdown or both? We did not have bacon.
Oh my, where do you shop? At those prices, it’d be cheaper to raise a pig and just eat it in small pieces at a time.
Cookemom, I’m in Kansas…ten minutes from a cow. This place wouldn’t exist were it not for the military and I was not at the commissary, which is closed because of the shutdown. I feel they always stick it to these guys first.
” … ten minutes from a cow.” Sorry, but that made me laugh so hard I almost fell off my chair. I’m a city girl from the Northeast, currently living in the Midwest where things look a little strange, and, I think I’m ten minutes from a cow, now, too.
Jackie, I’m from Chicago. Came here from D.C., so I know just what you mean.
That one got me rolling, too JOB:) Funny.
Maybe we’re all ” … ten minutes from a cow,” but sometimes the cows are hidden by all of the high rises!
For sure, a lot of heifers, bulls and the stuff they leave behind.
Say no more…..I lived in Kansas during cookeman’s stint in the Air Force. Access and cost of food is probably one of your least concerns.
Amen and Amen!!!
I’ve been seeing news reports of food prices going up. The delayed farm bill contributed to it, but the shutdown exacerbated the problem because it leaves everything in limbo and the food market is responding in the only way it knows how.
YIKES! Where DO you shop??!! Bacon is bad for you anyway:)
I had overnight guests and just didn’t have enough and it was what they wanted. I aim to please, but they had to get over it. When you talk to the butchers and they all confess that within the last year they have become vegetarians, I suppose that should be a hint.
Apparently corn has some kind of disease this year. That would also contribute to meat prices.
There is nothing about this guy that I take seriously. Nothing.

Republicans can continuing playing games, 2014 the Democrats will get back the House, keep the Senate and will have the White House.
The only hope for America.
One of the things apparent right off the bat is that some of the best deals will be offered by nonprofit health insurers, including the brand new co-op plans that will be available in about half the states. These plans will be lean and mean. They won’t have the enormous overhead costs of the big for-profit insurance corporations that I used to work for, and they won’t have to charge extra for coverage just to satisfy the profit demands of shareholders. They won’t have shareholders.
If you’re wondering why Aetna, Cigna, Humana and UnitedHealth Group, four of the biggest for-profits, are not planning to participate in many of the marketplaces, it’s because they know they cannot be competitive and still satisfy the profit expectations of their shareholders.
Before long both Wall Street and Main Street will catch on to the idea that the big for-profits are bloated Goliaths that can and will be taken down by the new Davids of the insurance world. The value proposition held out by the bigs for years – that their armies of underwriters, marketers and “medical management” specialists are essential – will be blown to smithereens.
The bigs have to know this, and it explains why we are seeing some of their desperation tactics. Like the letter Aetna is sending to some of its policyholders encouraging them to renew early this year so they can avoid the “big changes” that are on the way.
“New coverage requirements, additional benefits, and many new insurance plans will leave many people with questions,” Aetna’s letter reads. “You can do something right now that could help you save on your individual insurance premiums for next year. It’s a one-time opportunity available right now.”
Aetna executives know, of course, that most Americans are not yet aware that they might be able to get much better deals on coverage in the new marketplaces. As you can imagine, Aetna’s letter makes no mention of those marketplaces.
Got to love Wendall Potter:)
it is difficult to find info on these co-ops. I’d heard on wcpt that a small business advocacy group had gotten a grant before additional grants were a casualty of the LAST gop-manufactured hostage taking, and as of a week ago I couldn’t find anything. You have to be knowledgeable and very committed to find out about these alternatives.
Part of our individual message efforts have to be that gop has alresdy done damage to ACA – cutting funding for roll out, info and eliminating funding for overhead- limited options.

Why none of the media hacks is asking @SpeakerBoehner why is he afraid to bring the clean CR bill to house vote?— (@amk4obama) October 06, 2013
On the three occasions in the transcript above Speaker Boehner was lying. He told other basic Republican lies about the ACA during the interview, but his defense of his own behavior was built on lies. Each time Boehner lied, he got angry and his voice changed.
The Speaker knows that he is lying. The votes are there in the House to pass a clean CR. There is video evidence of Boehner saying repeatedly that he did not want to shut the government down. There is also evidence that enough Republicans would join with Democrats to support raising the debt limit.
John Boehner is a total mess right now. He is defending a position that he doesn’t really hold, with lies that are impossible for anyone to believe. This interview was a train wreck. The only thing that the American people got to see was that Boehner is desperate to hold on to his speakership. The Speaker will do, say, and threaten anything to stay in power.
Boehner has thrown the bogus Republican position of compromise out the window, and shifted to straight threat mode. The stress is getting to Boehner. Here is a man that is cracking up right before our eyes. Rep. Boehner’s angry outbursts can’t hide the fact that he refuses to sacrifice himself in order to save his own party. With each day that this crisis drags on, the odds that Republicans will lose the House next year increase.
I’d rather have my teeth hurt than listen to a word out of his mouth.

Nothing but excuses, excuses, and more excuses for their bad behavior. Even after Peter King admits that the Republicans caused the shutdown and SINO Boehner admits he reneged on a clean CR deal he made with Majority Leader Harry Reid, Chuck Todd still manages to pretend that it’s up to President Obama and the Democrats do something, anything to help Boehner get out of the mess he created. Bottom line, all Boehner has to do is have an up or down vote on a clean CR. The votes are there for it to pass. But even with that, Chuck Todd can’t bering himself to state the obvious.

A Federal Budget Crisis Months in the Planning

It seems clear that the shutdown is not about ACA, but about attacking Mr. Obama and the Democrats: that the uninsured poor would lose coverage does not strike me as being the GOP’s goal, which would be truly evil, but rather a mere casualty of their war on the President, which is just sad.
But to read this piece and see the calculation, planning, and spending involved, including hundreds of millions poured into the effort, is downright chilling. Who knew?
Until now, I had viewed the shutdown as but the latest antic of our nation’s far-right leadership –people who are embarrassing even to normal Republicans who understand agreeing-to-disagree and moving on.
But now I shudder to think that we have a shadowy group of very powerful and ultra-rich individuals who organize and orchestrate at this level, in a ruthless and relentless effort to damage their opponents at all costs.
The shutdown, we see here, is but the tip of a very disturbing iceberg that should cause us all alarm.
How ironic that a President whose hallmark has been compromise nonetheless is confronted with these machinations as his reward.
The Democrats will gain political capital from this mess. The rational voices in the Republican camp need to begin reigning in the extremists, before this ugliness spirals even further. The Republicans are surely better than this.

All this energy and money so adults can act like fools and babies while millions go uninsured and many die for no better reason than greed. all this energy and money could have been spent on making the health care law better but as per usual, this country is so much better at destroying things than building them up. Anyone can blow something up. It takes hard work, intelligence and perseverance to build something up, especially a world class health care system built out of the archaic, greed inspired one we had. The T party and republicans have nothing to be proud of here. We look like idiots to the rest of the world and we should. This is disgusting.

BTW, my calling #BoehnerShutdown a Coup d’Etat is in no way hyperbolic. The evidence is staring everyone in the face and this latest expose by the NYTimes only affirms what we’ve known for a long time.
A cabal of plutocrats have been leveraging racial hate to achieve a goal that they have had not for the past few years but ever since the end of WW II – fascist control of the US government.
They have no ended any pretense of hiding their objective because they know they either succeed now or they’re not going to get another shot, perhaps ever.
Yes, you are living in an historically significant moment, not just for the USA but for global stability. It is just as significant a moment as when President Lincoln began his defense of our democratic Republic. No joke.
Yes We Can
Rikyrah – thanks for posting this link. I like to read the comments from posters as you can get a sense of what folks are thinking. This seems to reflect the thoughts of rational folks and it is clear, sane people sees this GOP faux showdown for exactly what it is. Not just dems but republicans as well. Two more interesting comments.
The party of “personal responsibility” has been exposed as a fraud. The ACA requires personal responsibility from a wide swath of the population requiring people to take the trouble and money to be insured.
Further, and here is their hidden objection, it requires corporate, (and in the case of individually held companies like the Koch Brothers Empire) personal responsibility for the healthcare coverage of people who are working for (read, dedicating their lives to) their companies.
That the Heritage Foundation would be working so hard at defunding and defeating a law which incorporated at its heart their own concept proposal (individual mandate) from the Heritage Foundation in 1993 demonstrates the perfidy of the Right. “Destroy the center, destroy the left, move everything further right until there is no government left to oppose us” has become their evident goal.
This opportunity must be taken to expose their evil intentions. Little of the discussion has touched on the millions of people’s lives which are destroyed each year by the lack of insurance, devastating illness untreatable for lack of funds, individuals and families ruined financially, problems the healthcare law addresses.
Mr. Obama, in becoming a target for attack from so many sides for so many reasons, has succeeded in flushing out the formerly hidden groups which now mistakenly think the majority of the country supports their position. It is time for the majority to speak, now, and on election day
Oct. 6, 2013 at 7:56 a.m.
These Republican provocateurs think they are just fighting to derail a law they do not want. But their tactics, if allowed to succeed, will derail our democracy. They are willing to shutdown the government to win their way. Will they also go so far as to cause the country to default on its debts and thereby throw not only the US economy into chaos but the global economy as well? They seem willing and are already threatening to do so.
These delusional despots backed by billions in private funds care little for our democratic ideals of majority rule. Unless we find the will to overturn their calculated campaign, our country will go from being the world’s foremost democracy to becoming a banana republic where wealthy private interests succeed in promoting policies that benefit their narrow political goals by any means, fair or foul. We now face one of the greatest challenges to our democracy since the founding of our republic. This is not “politics as usual.” Caveat emptor.
