In April of 2010, the gossip site Gawker.com posted an article entitled “Triscuitgate: Why Do the Islamic Extremists Who Hate South Park Also Hate Triscuits?” (Somaiya, 2010). The article discussed the group Revolution Muslim, an Islamic group that had previously made headlines because of its threats against the cartoon South Park for its depictions of the Prophet Muhammad. The Gawker article reports that Revolution Muslim called the South Park creators “Darwinist faggots who are as despicable as the rest, walking around eating your Triscuits.”
CIA terrorism analysts love @Gawker and the @TheOnion as much as you do slate.com/blogs/the_worl… via @joshuakeating— The Lovely Plains (@DaRiverZkind) October 08, 2013
Like the Gawker writer, several analysts in my group wondered, “Why Triscuits?” There was a lot of lighthearted discussion in person and via email about why Triscuits were targeted instead of saltines or Ritz crackers, and whether it had to do with round vs. square crackers. One co-worker posited that the Revolution Muslim member had eaten a Triscuit and torn the roof of his mouth when he had been expecting the “cashmere of wheat,” as advertised on the Triscuit website (“Triscuit: A Simple Story,” n.d.). The phrase “cashmere of wheat” quickly evolved into the “Cadillac of crackers,” and, perhaps inevitably, someone brought in a box of Triscuits to decorate the office and renamed them “Freedom Squares” by pasting a picture of Mel Gibson from the movie Braveheart on the box with the caption, “Tastes like FREEDOM!”

@SenatorReid @SenSchumer threatening to violate Sec4 of the 14th is a also violating Oath of Office. Please have @TheJusticeDept intervene.— Bobfr (@Our4thEstate) October 08, 2013
Can the DoJ sue Congress, Doc? Is that possible in this case?
Don’t know, Nena. We’re in uncharted waters, but you can be sure that President Obama, AG Holder & a bunch of legal experts are striving to find a legal remedy to halt any default.
My – completely novice – thinking on this to approach it from the perspective of ‘threat of harm’ and the ‘harm already caused by threats’ to view what remedy Sec 4 of the 14th might offer.
Rather than President Obama using it to order the US Treasury to continue paying the bills – which I think is fraught with all kinds of downside – request that the DoJ enforce the law – Sec 4 of the 14th – and hold accountable, under their respective Oath of Office, any Member of the House or Senate threatening or continuing to threaten a default. To do so is, beyond reasonable doubt, a violation of their solemn obligation to defend the Constitution. Such an approach might break the impasse and seems both rational and defensible.
And, very importantly, use such legal action as a way to teach the American people and the world what it means to take an Oath of Office to defend the Constitution. Not the silly pretend stuff Republicans are so fond of – but the real deal.
In addition, as nath wisely notes, the DoJ may also be able to invoke Sec 3 of the 14th, in service of the approach outlined above.
For now …
Oath of Office:
The oath used today has not changed since 1966 and is prescribed in Title 5, Section 3331 of the United States Code. It reads: “I, AB, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion, and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.”
Not on this one! Separation of Powers! Article I, sect. 7 & 8 invest all the powers of the purse in Congress. And from my reading, Doc may differ with me here, the three Civil War/Reconstruction Amendments (13th, 14th, and 15th) all contain sections that state plainly that it’s the Congress which has the power, through “appropriate legislation,” to enforce all the three Amendments.
As far as I am concerned, I think it’s “We the People” who may legitimately sue Congress for refusing to fulfill its Constitutional obligation under Article I, Section 8. of the Original Constitution. Obviously, not being a lawyer I am not sure if the Courts would grant We the People: standing. But then again, I don’t see why not? The Court granted standing to “Citizens: who challenged campaign finance reform laws.
Article I, Section 8, combined with Section 4, of the 14th Amendment, leaves no room for Congress shark its responsibility of honoring and paying U.S. debt. Any member of Congress championing default, or aiding and abating those who champion default, is violating the Constitution. Sadly, in my humble opinion, the executive branch of government (President) has no Constitutional Power to compel Congress to pay U. S. debts! Obviously, since one House of Congress is dominated by people intent on destroying our country, it’s doubtful that Congress is capable of policing itself to make sure that the action of its members won’t wreck havoc on the United Sates.
Nathkatun7 shared some info on the previous thread and Offspring came home a couple minutes after (very timely, I thought ), so I snagged him to make a picture of it. Hope it works for sharing…

I thanked him nicely, figuring I will wait to learn next time.
I was so focused I on trying to follow the steps he used (didn’t/couldn’t) I forgot to include “h/t Nathkatun7″. Sorry, Nathk. Another time.
Perhaps Our TOD Twitter Brigades could tweet the DC/NY Journos and ask them what is the Crime for Congress when they willfully violate the Constitution…..14 Amendment? The 113th Congress were sworn in on Jan 3rd, 2013 this year.
What is the use of our Constitution if those who swore to protect the Constitution are the ones now threatening to Burn Our Nation Down, financially?
Thank you so much VC for the shout out and for sharing this! I am so proud of all of you TOD twitter warriors! I feel ashamed because I am still clueless when it comes to twitter. But even more importantly, thank you for asking the crucial question about what the tea bag members of Congress, aided and abated by their Republican leaders, have been doing. Members of Congress are bound by the oath to support the Constitution. One of the most solemn responsibilities of Congress is to honor the debts of the United States! I say solemn responsibility because it’s covered in Article I, Section 8 and Article VI, paragraph 1; and it’s re-affirmed in Section 4 of the 14th Amendment that Bobfr has covered extensively.

Continuity of Operations (COOP) is a United States federal government initiative, required by U.S. Presidential directive, to ensure that agencies are able to continue performance of essential functions under a broad range of circumstances.
National Security Presidential Directive-51 (NSPD-51)/Homeland Security Presidential Directive-20 (HSPD-20), National Continuity Policy, specifies certain requirements for continuity plan development, including the requirement that all Federal executive branch departments and agencies develop an integrated, overlapping continuity capability. FCD 1 also serves as guidance to State, local, and tribal governments.
FEMA has developed Continuity Guidance Circular 1, Continuity Guidance for Non-Federal Agencies (CGC 1). CGC 1 parallels the information in FCD 1 closely, but is geared to States, territories, tribal and local governments, and private-sector organizations.

Woody Allen has stopped his latest film, Blue Jasmine, from being screened in India after learning mandatory anti-tobacco adverts would be inserted into its smoking scenes.
Indian law requires health warnings to be shown on screen when characters smoke in films, while cinemas must play anti-smoking ads before every movie.
“He feels that when the scroll comes, attention goes to it rather than the scene. We had to abide by the law and we don’t have control over the film.”
woody can GFH.
Interesting way to deal with the smoking problem. Wonder if it works.
It’s a PSA. It works as well as other PSA’s work with peeps with brains. Not so much with numbskulls. We have a very high smoking population and the related medical issues and huge cost of treating them.
The point is if woody’s ‘artistic portrayal’ is gonna be disrupted by a 5 second PSA, then it’s not up to the mark.

Devin Nunes Denies Backing ‘Clean’ Funding Bill To Avert Shutdown, But He Did — And We’ve Got It On Tape
Nunes’ effort to distance himself from the idea of a clean continuing resolution comes as the White House and Democrats are pressing House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) to bring such a bill up for a vote. The votes appear to be there for the House to pass it, in which case it would sail through the Senate and get signed into law by President Barack Obama, immediately ending the shutdown. But Boehner has given no indication he’s prepared to go that route.

South’s poorest shut out of health care reform – Post and Courier buff.ly/18K7FXd— Child Health USA (@ChildHealthUSA) October 07, 2013
Wouldn’t the people in the South have to push their Republican governors/legislators to open the exchanges or expand Medicaid? Not sure what those of us in blue states can do to help. My heart goes out to those in the South who desperately need healthcare but cannot get their Republican politicians to understand this. Very sad when people put politics above compassion.
Yes, they have to either demand that these GOP governors expand medicaid, or vote them out. It’s time people play a more active role in their local politics and stop voting for the same useless thugs over and over.
Yup. If you don’t appreciate the value of your vote, then you get ruled by batshit crazy.
Simple. They got to stop electing these nutters. In a way, I am not sorry for these folks. They voted / not voted for the mess they found themselves in.
Yes, of course. But the poorest of the poor are trying to figure out how to have enough food to last through the month, so they don’t have time for lots of other things – including voting. Some remain poor because they have health problems and no access to medical care and no health care insurance, so it’s all a vicious, vicious cycle. And, apparently, no matter how hard their advocates fight for them, it’s an awful battle in some areas. This is the Republican version of “survival of the fittest.” Been around a long while; we’re just seeing more and more of it up close these days.
Ironically in India, it’s the poor who turnout in large numbers and it’s the middle class that takes the day off to enjoy itself and then whines about the govt. That’s how we get free healthcare, free school education, subsidized transport etc.. Their quality may suck due to political corruption but at least the pols listen to their voters. It’s very rare to find pols getting reelected often unlike the present congress critters in US.
Of course, I wouldn’t want to imply that only wealthy people vote here. And, as you already know, much of our middle class takes the day off, too. My comment was more about the poorest of the poor, some rural but some urban who have enough immediate problems and challenges to keep them away. Wouldn’t you think that no matter what country we live in, those actually elected to serve ALL the people would actually take that as their marching orders? I’m so sick of the corrupt politicians … of course, we are human beings, so there’s the rub.
Yes, it is a vicious circle that has to be broken by the economically weak to break free from their poverty. It’s common to see mile long queue villages here while the cities just shut down. The average turnout is over 80% in villages and a pathetic 30-40% in cities.
In my lifetime, I have not seen a non-corrupt pol except PBO. And hence my loud support for him from across the oceans.
And we truly value that “loud support” from across the oceans ~ from you and all the others! It’s a time for celebration throughout the world, methinks, to see someone like our President in the Oval Office. Wish we could give him five terms, instead of two!

Actually Lawrence’s tweet does not adequately explain the message he expressed on his show. LOD said something like what if the GOP are planning to take power away from the presidency recognizing they will have a hard time reclaiming that office with the way the population is going. He said they are trying to give Congress more power to offset the power of the presidency instead of just being ignorant ideologists.
We should proceed with caution about how weak Bonehead is. He may not have the votes for a clean CR. If he doesn’t but call for the vote anyway he loses all the way around. Moderates will hate that they are on record, but still lost and will be primaried. Teanuts will want to tar and feather him for even bringing it up. It serves him no purpose to bring a clean CR to a vote without knowing he has the votes for sure. The moderates could turn tail at the drop of a hat. Even Peter King couldn’t get the 20 or so he thought he had.
The word on how to proceed will come from DeMint by way of the Koch brothers. I think they are in a huddle and we’ll know soon enough the end game. It won’t be pretty.
coolemom, I’m with you. I don’t trust any Republicans. Not any of them.
