‘THIS IS EXTORTION PLAIN AND SIMPLE’
Watch This for 22 Seconds and You’ll See Why Obama Can’t Give an Inch
BY JONATHAN COHN
House Speaker John Boehner went on ABC News “This Week” to make clear his position: Republicans won’t give the government new borrowing authority until Democrats agree to negotiate about Obamacare and fiscal priorities.
The key exchange takes all of 22 seconds, starting at about 12:25 in the video above. It goes like this:
STEPHANOPOULOS: What the president says is he believes that the consequences of negotiating again over a debt limit and re-creating a cycle of crises are worse.
BOEHNER: Every president in modern history has negotiated over a debt limit. Debt limits have been used to force big policy changes in Washington. And guess what, George? They’re going to be used again.
Boehner is wrong on the history. Congress has increased the debt limit in the course of passing other legislation—the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities has a nice review of recent legislation—and sometimes one or the other party made a big fuss about it. But, as Thomas Mann and Norman Ornstein explain in their acclaimed book, It’s Even Worse Than It Looks, until recently officials in neither party seriously threatened to let the government default on expenses it had already incurred:

Oh, LDS, I needed that. Thank you for the great perspective.
Thank you, Ms. Chips and Jackie.
And watch PBO make his enemies his footstool.
Did anybody take notice of the “quadruple threat” of weather that the Weather Channel forecasted all weekend? Think it not strange these occurrences happened in places that are predominately red states. The same states who say they want “less government”. This is just October and record snowstorms, floods, winds. The Repugs base in these states are about to eat them alive with all the devastations and natural destructions happenings. It would not surprise me if some of their elected officials could not eve get home this weekend and stays comfortably in Washington, D.C. while the regulars folks at home went through hell.
Natural disasters and health are not controlled by man and certainly by Repugs. They have not shutdown nothing.
They have managed to shut themselves out of our government in 2014 and their base will make that clear.
PBO and nature ain’t playing with their asses.
STAY FOCUS, Y’ALL!
Good Morning Chipsticks….TOD Early Birds!!!
“China tells U.S. to take steps to avoid debt crisis”
BEIJING (Reuters) – China urged Washington on Monday to take decisive steps to avoid a debt crisis and ensure the safety of Chinese investments, as a deadlocked U.S. Congress confronted a looming deadline to increase the nation’s borrowing power or risk default.
China, the U.S. government’s largest creditor, is “naturally concerned about developments in the U.S. fiscal cliff”, Vice Finance Minister Zhu Guangyao said
“The United States is totally clear about China’s concerns about the fiscal cliff,” Zhu told reporters in Beijing, adding that Washington and Beijing had been in touch over the issue.
“We ask that the United States earnestly takes steps to resolve in a timely way before October 17 the political (issues) around the debt ceiling and prevent a U.S. debt default to ensure safety of Chinese investments in the United States and the global economic recovery,” Zhu said.
“This is the United States’ responsibility.”
Good Morning Everyone! Hope you all have a terrific day!

“US Government Work Is Losing Cachet for Some”
There was a time when being a federal employee meant a steady paycheck, great benefits and pride in serving the country.
But these days, many federal workers are frustrated, anxious and growing tired of being pawns in a never-ending political struggle over government funding.
“The pay has fallen behind, the uncertainty of having a job from day to day, the stability which was a drawing factor for a large portion of the people is gone now,” said Tommy Jackson, an Air Force acquisitions manager in Warner Robins, Ga., who has spent 30 years in government.
For many, working for the government has long been a ticket to a middle-class lifestyle. Federal jobs offered flexibility, security, solid health care and pensions. Raises and promotions were common. Whatever happened to the economy, Uncle Sam never went bankrupt or threatened to close down.
SW, there will always be people who work in public service because it is that–serving the public. Anyone in the 21rst century who looks at any job in the US as a source of stability is in for a shock. The US and the world are changing dramatically and, unlike earlier days, people are going to have to shift from job to job, rather than counting on a steady paycheck for life. Unfortunately, many government workers will find that their skills don’t easily transfer into the private sector. So that will mean re-training, which is tough after a certain age. We may get to a point where the ‘anti-government’ fever that Reagan provoked starts to die down and people begin to realize just how much they need ‘public servants.’ Heck, they might even start demanding that their congressmen act like people who serve the public. It will take many years of Democratic majorities to accomplish this.
We may get to a point where the ‘anti-government’ fever that Reagan provoked starts to die down and people begin to realize just how much they need ‘public servants.’
I agree JackieG. The TP’s actions are working against their ‘anti-government’ views…helping to highlight people’s dependency on government services.
It’s shouldn’t be about reducing/eliminating government, but making government operate more efficiently.
NOW, WAS THAT SO HARD? LOOKS LIKE WE MAY HAVE A BREACH IN THE MEDIA FIREWALL.

It takes the thought that their investments might be worth nothing – that the 1929 depression took 10 years and a major war before recovery – It has taken a tsunami of epic destruction from the GOP to get a minor breach in the wall of support the media provided the Republicans.

Boehner Urges G.O.P. Unity in ‘Epic Battle’
By JONATHAN WEISMAN and ASHLEY PARKER (10/4/13)
Democrats say they simply cannot trust the speaker to deliver. Mr. Reid said in an interview in his office on Friday that Mr. Boehner came to him at the end of July with a proposition: If Senate Democratic leaders could accept a stopgap spending measure in the fall at levels that reflected across-the-board spending cuts, the speaker would refrain from adding extraneous measures that could precipitate a clash.
On Sept. 12, in a meeting of the top four Congressional leaders, Mr. Boehner said he was running into problems with a conservative groundswell demanding that a gutting of the health law accompany any spending measure. Mr. Reid and Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader, suggested a procedural step that would allow the House to vote on a stopgap spending bill with a side provision removing funds from the health care law that the Senate could strip out before sending the spending measure to the president.
Again, the speaker agreed. And again, he could not carry through, Mr. Reid said. “If I told him I would do something, I would do that,” the Senate leader said.
Reid: Boehner backed out of deal
MK disgusts me…..he is such a miserable man who he gets paid a lot of money to disgust me.

He can’t help it, can he HF? The koolaid he drinks at breakfast is just too strong for him to ever actually see the truth.
I have a full on hate going for all of the republicans and their media today- fed up to the hilt with their shutdown, their crazy behavior and their LIES, constant GD LIES.
Good Morning Chips and everybody.
DEBT CEILING: UNDERSTANDING WHAT’S AT STAKE:
…What is the debt ceiling?
The debt ceiling is the total amount of money the U.S. government can borrow (by selling Treasury bonds) to pay its obligations, including interest on the national debt, Social Security and Medicare benefits, and many other payments. …
Does raising the debt ceiling increase the federal debt?
No. Lifting the borrowing limit simply allows the government to pay its existing bills. That debt exists whether or not Congress authorizes additional borrowing, and to avoid default it must be paid.
…Oct. 17 the government would have about $30 billion on hand. That isn’t enough because the government spends as much as $60 billion per day.
… If the government runs low on cash, it will have to withhold a range of payments. Retirees might not get their Social Security checks, especially worrisome for the millions of Americans who depend almost entirely on the social insurance program for income. The same goes for Medicare and Medicaid recipients. …

I said it before and I’ll say it again. Withhold social security checks and the screams will be so loud, every congressman will be sorry he was born. Seniors vote. Get them angry and there will be hell on earth to pay. SS is the only lifeline people have and they’re not going to die because Boehner puts his job over his country.

From Jan 1991 to Oct 2013, Boehner missed 512 of 12,786 roll call votes, which is 4.0%. This is worse than the median of 2.3% among the lifetime records of representatives currently serving. The chart below reports missed votes over time.

Linda, thank you for that very important information.
These were all sponsored bills after very serious hangovers, I assume……..hmmmmm?
What a disgustingly loser record Boehner has, Linda. His record is beyond pathetic.
What we are witnessing is the cold ruthlessness of President Obama. In the past he has compromised when it was needed, but many on the left assumed that it was a lack of resolve on his part. President Obama is not going to acquiesce to the Republicans, he’s going to make them walk the plank and think nothing of it.
I know that, Don, and those of here who support him, know that about the president. Sadly the witless Republicans are making the mistake of underestimating him, once again.

i noticed plouffe do it earlier in a tweet and now this ad…i wish they’d stop giving cover to republicans by separating them from “tea party republicans.” the TP IS the republican party nowadays. there is no separation, even with the so-called ‘moderate’ republicans. everything should just be referred to as ‘republican-created crisis” and so on.
I know what you mean, but it looks like the strategy is to keep on reminding everyone that the GOP is being run by their nutjob Tea Party extremists, and that Boehner and Co haven’t the guts to stand up to them. But I agree, the party is one big lump of nuttery.
yea, plouffe obviously is a genius at this business so they must have some specific reason, which probably what you suggested. just bugs me on a personal level that people such as john boner get away with seeming more rational. as we say here though, i trust Team Obama implicitly, since they’ve EARNED that trust. forward to 2014 midterms!!!
Boehner has certainly put himself firmly onside with everything the tea party wants – no longer is the tail wagging the dog – the tail is the dog
This is meant to shame boehner and the so-called moderate congress critters. It points a picture of the inmates running the asylum. The targeted demographic for this ad isn’t folks like us, who know what’s going on. It’s for low info, moderate, independents, and undecided voters who will not want to be associated with a party that’s been taken over by the stupid. This is to get those folks to look in the mirror and decide if they really approve of what the pubs are allowing to happen to their party.
they need to do this. It’s actually more damaging to shine a bright light on the fringe running the show. It makes the cowards look like, well, the cowards that they are.
Also, I don’t hold out a lot of hope that any of them have an ounce of principle, but we have to keep a toe in the door to get a few sane votes. It’s maddening, I know, but necessary, I’m afraid.
My thoughts are we still need the moderate Republicans to side with the Dems to get this passed in the House. So restricting the comments to the TP Republicans instead of insulting all the GOP is politically motivated.

GIVING UP PRESUMED LEVERAGE CONSTITUTES SURRENDER FOR REPUBLICANS
The Morning Plum: John Boehner doesn’t really want to `negotiate’ with Obama
By Greg Sargent
A lot of folks have been willing to accept Boehner’s demand for “negotiations” at face value. But let’s be clear on what he is really asking for here. Boehner is actually ruling out any negotiations in which Republicans don’t enjoy the leverage that the threat of a massive economic meltdown confers upon them. And he’s also saying Republicans will make no concessions of their own in them.
Some will argue that agreeing to raise the debt limit constitutes a “concession” on the part of at least some conservative Republicans. But why is it a concession if Boehner concedes it must happen to avert widespread disaster for the country? As Boehner himself implicitly admits, it is the giving up of presumed leverage itself that constitutes surrender for Republicans. He’s insisting on this leverage as a condition for any negotiations.
Morning! So Boner’s word means nothing, and America has to endure this lunacy because he can’t find the votes from his insane caucus, even though he made the agreement…so it’s the President’s fault…or something. Sigh……..
It’s Monday….try to enjoy the day and kick some RW ass while you do!
That’s it. I’m moving to Switzerland.
“Switzerland has recently passed some of the strictest laws on executive pay in the world, and will vote in November on a 1:12 initiative, which would cap executive pay at only 12 times the amount of a company’s lowest paid employee. No date has been set for the guaranteed income referendum yet. ”
And that is what it used to be in the 1950s/60s. I have no objection to entrepreneurs making money via their intelligence and investment and ownership of a company – but a CEO is simply an employee of a company – no-one is worth the money that company CEOs are paid today.
Howdy all you O’s!!!! What a great getting up day in TOD land!!!!
Secty Defense Chuck Hagel found that under the law DOD personnel who contribute to the moral of active military, can be deemed essential. Therefore many of those furloughed are back to work, that includes civilian employees who are considered moral boosters. Sounds like the cafeteria lady may be back at work, not to mention the guy who bakes the donuts.
This doesn’t apply to contractors though.
I keep seeing posts about there being enough Republican House votes to pass the clean CR. I also see posts about large numbers of Republicans who privately support the clean CR and are in favor of raising the debt ceiling to avoid a government default. Yet, the votes thus far do not reflect this.
I know that there are some who are at risk of being primaried by TP candidates. I wouldn’t think this is the case for ALL of them! What else is keeping them from stepping up and doing the right thing; especially now that the government is shut down and people’s livelihood and well-being have been negatively impacted? If the numbers are as high as have been reported, shouldn’t these “moderate?” GOPers be effective if they collectively confronted House “leadership” in convincing them to do what is right?
My question as well. Where are the patriots?
Put simply, the moderates are saying those things to distance themselves from the teanuts, while at the same time afraid of being primaried. I think they are just trying to hold on long enough to cover their butts in 2014. They’re letting Boehner/Cantor take the fall for this one.
There aren’t enough of them to force Boehner to put a clean CR or debt ceiling to vote. If it was put to vote, however, they would vote for it.

Greg Sargent @ThePlumLineGS 33m
John Boehner made a really important admission on ABC. Gives away whole game completely:
Retweeted by LOLGOP
Let’s be very clear about Boehner’s position. According to his own assessment of the crisis he personally created, the Speaker will ignore his responsibilities to the nation and crash the economy deliberately unless the White House agrees to “negotiations.” Once those negotiations begin, the Speaker, according to his own declaration on national television, is not prepared to accept any concessions.
In other words, Boehner’s stated position is that the party that won the election should make major concessions to the party that lost the election in exchange for nothing. If the party that won the election balks at this attempted extortion, Republicans will start hurting Americans on purpose.
Boehner’s allies keep offering a defense: don’t worry; he’s brazenly lying and the Speaker won’t actually shoot the hostage (i.e., us). But if they’re wrong, and the weak and incompetent “leader” isn’t bluffing, the consequences for you and me will be severe.
With 10 days remaining, this is about the time Boehner should be inching away from the cliff. Yesterday on national television, he seemed to be sprinting towards it.
