    Shutdown coverage fails Americans

U.S. news reports are largely blaming the government shutdown on the inability of both political parties to come to terms. It is supposedly the result of a “bitterly divided” Congress that “failed to reach agreement” (Washington Post) or “a bitter budget standoff” left unresolved by “rapid-fire back and forth legislative maneuvers” (New York Times). This sort of false equivalence is not just a failure of journalism. It is also a failure of democracy.

When the political leadership of this country is incapable of even keeping the government open, a political course correction is in order. But how can democracy self-correct if the public does not understand where the problem lies? And where will the pressure for change come from if journalists do not hold the responsible parties accountable?

The truth of what happened Monday night, as almost all political reporters know full well, is that “Republicans staged a series of last-ditch efforts to use a once-routine budget procedure to force Democrats to abandon their efforts to extend U.S. health insurance.” (Thank you, Guardian.)

Hi, NCLB, how ARE you? You mentioned having an upcoming procedure, then I didn’t see you for a few days. I sure hope things went/are going well!

These three buttons are also the history of the Democratic Party–always striving to help people and always fighting the naysayers and the idiots.
One party works to create a fairer, healthier, more prosperous America, the other tries to tear it all down. A lot of things that have gotten lost in the mists of history are coming into focus as the tea party morphed Republican party strips all its masks and shows itself for the ugly thing it has become. The sober, sensible party of business that many people remember from some earlier era has now fully surrendered to the darker forces of hate and destruction. They kept this transformation under wraps for a while, but there’s no hiding it now.

Urge everyone at TOD to contact Senate Dems, especially Leader Reid, and urge an immediate, simple majority, vote. The level should be sufficient to pay the bills through Jan2015 as to enable the Dem controlled 114th Congress time to pass any further required debt ceiling adjustment.

    Thank you.

[What the heck, Colorado! Really? Please stop this now & forever! Vote!]:

A renewed and spirited effort is now underway to recall Sen. Evie Hudak, a Democrat from Westminster, less than six months after an initial effort faltered.

Organizers from within Senate District 19 were certified by the Secretary of State late Friday to begin gathering signatures to have a recall placed on the ballot. The group, “Recall Hudak, too,” must gather about 18,900 valid signatures within a 60-day time frame, and on its website the group even has a running ticker that counts down to the deadline.

“She has infringed upon our constitutional right to keep and bear arms. She has voted to make all citizens less safe and to drive hundreds of jobs from Colorado,” reads an excerpt of the petition language e-mailed by Mike McAlpine, a spokesman for the group. […..]

    I agree with WBuffett.

Republican leaders’ debt ceiling politics are a weapon of mass destruction of a different sort, according to Warren Buffett.

The billionaire investor told Fortune in an interview Friday that “it makes absolutely no sense” for politicians to use the debt ceiling as a threat to get their way on other legislation. Congressional Republicans, who have shut down the government over President Obama’s health care reform law, say they will use the debt limit as leverage to delay an important provision of Obamacare.

“It ought to be banned as a weapon,” Buffett said of the debt ceiling politics. “It should be like nuclear bombs, basically too horrible to use.”

[How Juanita Jean spent her Saturday! Awesomeness!]:

Well, there’s about 200 of us in Austin training to win elections a year from now.

There’s standing room only for a two day all day campaign training for candidates and campaign managers. The World’s Most Dangerous Beauty Salon, Inc. has five people here learning to be experts, so if we say it’s Christmas, you better go buy some little twinkling lights because we’re damn experts and have a certificate to prove it.

What we are learning is that we better get used to living in a blue state and we should thank Ted Cruz in large part for that but Louie Gohmert, Rick Perry, Steve Stockman, Randy Nuegebauer, Joe Barton, and a whole mess of other old white guys for turning Texas blue.

It’s actually strange because a number of republicans supported and voted for Social Security and Medicare. But they were the liberal and moderate republicans that dominated the North East. The right wing conservatives never supported those programs and they want to stop the ACA before it’s fully implemented.

    Morning Obots.

So, I had an awful night last night. My mind was working over with worry, between our careering over the cliff in DC, to my missus still not having clients assigned from her new job. Took me a couple of hours to fall asleep. And, of course, with the Santa Ana winds my allergies were awful. So for today I just hope to make it home in one piece and not have anything too awful happen. Yep, gonna be one of those days.

[California, please be alert. Vote! This is another reason for their idiocy. Incite stupid & get fundraising dollars. No ideas to run on, just hate. ]:

ANAHEIM, Calif. — For the first time, the tea party’s California caucus has a table at the state’s Republican fall convention. And the state GOP, which had seen donations dwindle to the point that it was mired in $1 million of debt just seven months ago, is now debt free.

This just happens to coincide with a big show of force by the national Republican leadership in Washington. The federal government has shut down because many Republicans have refused to pass a budget unless President Obama’s Affordable Care Act is put on hold.

“It’s generating excitement,” said Randall Jordan, head coordinator for the tea party statewide caucus and owner of a construction company in San Luis Obispo. “The House of Representatives is doing a great job. They’re doing exactly the job they’re supposed to be doing.”

It’s also galvanizing California Republicans, especially the more ardent conservatives in the state’s Central Valley, in a minority party that has suffered political and financial setbacks in recent years. […..]

Gazelle, this story is designed to excite those on the outside of California. The GOP here is quite small and in no way a threat to Calif – not with our Governor and Senate AND the active Dem Voters in California.

[OK, here’s some cuteness, Bo & Sunny edition! :) ]:

[…..] But a staffer who is not on furlough is still minding the Obamas’ two dogs: I photographed Sunny and Bo on Saturday morning taking an early morning romp on the South Lawn with a staffer. (Above, Sunny is at the staffer’s feet, after having jumped up in excitement. Bo avoided the sprinkler.)

There was much barking from the 16-month-old Sunny, who arrived at the White House to much fanfare on August 19th. Both dogs were off leash on Saturday morning, and Sunny was far friskier than her four-year-old brother.

Sunny is also a big fan of Mrs. Obama’s Kitchen Garden, which she visited during a different South Lawn walk ten days ago.

The logic of the GOP is breathtaking in its utter insanity. Obamacare is bad for the economy, so we are going to wreck the economy and trash your retirement accounts to save you from it.

    I mean, W T F Gop? W T F ?

I live in Houston. My wife and I are typical middle class professionals, people who would normally vote for the GOP in saner times. But today, the GOP has forced 4,000 of my neighbors out of a job, and my wife’s business is now going down the toilet. Neither one of us will ever vote GOP again. Nobody needs this shtttt.

    Better than nothing…
Then , in 2014 we can run on partial shutdown.
