Senator Reid: Senate will vote tomorrow on his bill for a 15-month Debt Limit hike.— meta (@metaquest) October 11, 2013
Good, my only wish is that the bill would expire the first week of November 2014 so the Republicans can once again try to convince the voters that not raising the debt limit is not all that bad.
From bottom of last thread:
Regarding the proposed length of extension of the debt ceiling …
Cloture filed on MTP to S.1569, Default Prevention Act
Oct 10, ’13 6:42 PM
This evening Senator Reid filed cloture on the motion to proceed to S.1569, the Default Prevention Act of 2013. Unless an agreement is reached, the cloture vote would occur 1 hour after the Senate convenes on Saturday, October 12.
The Senate stands adjourned until 10:30am on Friday, October 11, 2013. Following the prayer and pledge, it is expected the Majority Leader will renew his motion to proceed to S.1569, a bill to ensure the complete and timely payment of the obligations of the United States Government until December 31, 2014. Following Leader remarks, the Senate will recess subject to the call of the Chair to allow for a Republican special caucus with the President.
Crucial that the extension is until after the mid-term elections. Will be very interesting to see if any Republican attempts a filibuster. We’ve seen Senator Reid come very close to the ‘Constitutional (aka ‘nuclear’) option’ before. With Congress clearly in breach of several Sections of the Constitution regarding the US public debt, he might be ready to act if Rs filibuster.
At long last Senator Reid has figured out the correct length and width of rope to give the Republicans.
How Obamacare Helped Paul, A Homeless California Man, Finally Get Insurance
Chips this is happening thousands of times a day, I’m so pround of everyone that had a hand in bringing Obamacare to the people.
It’s just a wonderful story Don, and like you said, happening for thousands.
“Health insurance won’t immediately transform Paul’s life. It won’t give him a permanent place to live. It won’t get him a job. But it will prevent his life from completely unraveling if he were to get injured or sick. It’s one less worry in an already-stressful life.”
What a legacy PBO will leave.
Think of the number of people who developed a mental illness which caused them to be unable to hold down a job and then lost the ability to treat the illness because health insurance was tethered to employment. I suspect that this law will change the circumstance for a LOT of people who became homeless under those circumstances. With time and help, many will return to a state of wellness, find work, leave public assistance and contribute to demand creation and GDP growth. The positive impact of the ACA over time is vastly under estimated.
Just in my own neighborhood I’ve gotten all but one of the homeless folks linked up with Medi-Cal. Our county already has adult-only support in place with the rest to come through the state in 2014. It is helping enormously. People on the streets are sitting ducks for infections of all kinds, and now they are getting treatment without clogging the ER and being disrespected and rejected on follow up care. They don’t have to find money for antibiotics etc. either. The ACA is already doing its job.
I will say a prayer of thanks today that people like you – and the others making this kind of an effort – exist.
Very, very special of you, Churchlady. You are what America is all about. Thank you!
Great story! Thanks, Chips, for sharing it!

Since this manufactured crisis initiated by the Rs, I haven’t seen or heard from FLOTUS. Miss her!
She had to cancel all of her events because of the shutdown.
Hopefully, this stunt will end today/tomorrow and POTUS and FLOTUS can have a date night!
It is sad, but they cannot go out to eat anymore. Too freaking dangerous. So I hope they can either be alone or be with friends. What a horrid world that the President cannot be free from worry and dine out as they had originally intended.
I think they’re still going out for the occasional dinner date, but I may be mistaken.
Happy dob jc.
Happy Birthday JOB! I hope you had a wonderful day!
I did, thanks, and I’m still waiting for the CALL TO CAKE at my son’s house down the street, so it continues!
I’ve miss seeing FLOTUS too.

POTUS 5 YEARS AGO TODAY:
The GOP is in the Principal’s Office……I hope he paddles them.
I don’t believe in paddling in the Principal’s Office … well, up until now.
When I was in school….if we were caught chewing gum…the teacher made us put it on our nose.
In the last blog there was an article about the GOP’s intentions at this debt meeting. It mentioned a $16.7 T debt. Can someone explain what is included in that number cuz I have heard my crazy Drudge fanatic brother using that figure too?
The figure is the total of “all” debt accumulated by the U.S. Approximately $5 trillion is intra-governmental debt. In other words, money the government owes to itself.
They try to convince the dumb Americans that everything is due RIGHT NOW. It’s treasury bills, etc. which actually strengthens us.
Is your drudge-loving brother’s entire mortgage due RIGHT NOW? Didn’t think so.
Tell him the only way this debt becomes a real problem is if this insane uncertainty and stupidity of Republicans destroys the world’s faith in us and stops buying T-bills. THAT would cause a sell-off that would destroy us. And your brother.

GM Chip, TOD! Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! Happy B-Day JB!!!!! I got you a chocolate flavored iPhone
So sweet! Literally! Thanks, LP.
TOD, our media never ceases to amaze me.
I’ve been reading articles where the punditry is all clamoring that the Republicans “missed an opportunity” to go after ObamaCare because of the technical issues that the sites have been experiencing since its launch on the first.
Now think about this…You set up a site expecting a couple hundred thousand people would be accessing it and apparently millions of people attempt to use the site within the first few days causing basically an overload to the system and this is portrayed by our corporate media as somehow a disastrous thing because the system wasn’t designed to handle such a excessively high volume of users. Remember according to the Republicans no one wanted ObamaCare and it was going to destroy this Democratic Republic as we know it. Somehow the irony of this completely escapes our media.
When I read things like this, there is no wonder the Republicans have become so out of touch and blinded by their own self-righteous arrogance. They honestly figured that they could shutdown the government and breach the debt ceiling and there would be little to know consequences to their actions. They count on our media to parrot whatever message or narrative they wish set. Up to this point that has worked well for them. What they didn’t calculate in all of this was the human factor. Real people are feeling the results of their actions so no matter the spin by our media folks are fed-up with this B.S. and are poised to punish the Republicans for the pain and suffering they have caused. I just hope that this time they have long memories and don’t forget what this moment of anguish felt like come November 2014.
Excellent commentary! You are so right donna about the media and their constant crappy slanted reports enabling the GOP. I just happened to peruse a certain crimson site and they are still heavily fixed on defunding Obamacare despite evidence that going after the ACA is a dead end for the GOP.
They don’t know how to take no for an answer. They have always been able to just keep pushing a topic until the media parrots whatever whim they have. Like I said, it’s worked for them in the past so they figure they will just keep up the fight hoping that they can somehow pull this off. Folks are signing up (even if they are having trouble doing so) and this train has left the station. The Tea Party and their ilks will be the last to realize that they lost the War on Health Care reform.
LOS ANGELES — There are radio and television commercials galore, along with Twitter and Facebook posts and scores of highway billboards. There are armies of outreach workers who speak Spanish, Tagalog, Cambodian, Mandarin and Cantonese, all flocking to county fairs, farmers markets, street festivals and back-to-school nights across the state. With enthusiastic backing from state officials and an estimated seven million uninsured, California is a crucial testing ground for the success of President Obama’s health care law.
The state is spending $94 million to help local health clinics, community groups and labor unions reach residents — many who have lived without health insurance for years — and have them complete the often bewildering process of signing up for coverage. “It’s going to take a little bit of everyone doing a lot of different things to get this all together,” said Lisa Hubbard, a director at St. John’s Well Child and Family Clinic in South Los Angeles, which has one of the highest rates of uninsured in the country. “We’re really going to have to try anything and everything.”
If we all move to California, will it fall into the Pacific Ocean? Asking for a friend.
No! We have a very big desert, which, with California ingenuity, we may be able to water it and make it livable for more millions of people. Right now, the Great State of California is the 8th largest economy of the world. I think our population is about 36 million. So come on in! People freeing from American Taliban (sorry I meant to say Teabag) controlled regions/states are especially welcome.

This tale of poker cheats has all the signs of a Hollywood movie: high-tech contact lenses, marked playing cards, corrupt casino employees, and the French Riviera. Back in 2011, an Italian man codenamed “Parmesan” racked up 70,000 euros in one day of poker winnings followed up by 21,000 more in another visit, according to The Telegraph. He and his accomplices — which included two casino employees — found a way to mark the cards with invisible ink. Parmesan, a 56-year-old man whose real name is Stefano Ampollini, then used infrared contact lenses purchased online for 2,000 euros from a Chinese company to read his competitors’ hands.

ERIC CANTOR RIGGED THE RULES OF THE HOUSE TO ENSURE SHUTDOWN
Eric Cantor Has Rigged The Rules of the House So That The Government Stays Shut Down
According to Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), the ranking member of the House Budget Committee, “What people don’t know is that they rigged the rules of the House to keep the government shut down. This is a blatant effort to make sure that the Senate bill did not come up for a vote” and a near certainty the government will stay shut down until Republicans deem the public has suffered enough damage. Apparently that was part of the conservative’s plan all along according to the right’s talking heads who exposed the Republican ploy to make federal employees suffer.

“According to this report and others, President Obama remained firm in his view that Republicans are not entitled to demand a ransom simply for carrying out their basic responsibility to end the government shutdown and to avoid forcing the country into default.
The central premise of Obama’s position is that nobody should be setting preconditions for things as basic as keeping government open and avoiding fiscal calamity. He’s not against negotiating, but he is against negotiating by ransom demand. From a process point of view, that’s an unassailable position, because Obama is not asking Republicans to make any concessions at all—except to stop manufacturing hostage crises in order to get their way.”
What a disgraceful display from the corrupt Republican Party. They have no shame. They take the oath of office and then demand a pound of flesh from the American people just to do the bare minimum in their job description. The moral depravity of the Republican Party is breathtaking and unprecedented. There’s that word again UNPRECEDENTED. Just ask yourself how many times have you heard the word UNPRECEDENTED in the last four years as it relates to something the Republican Party is doing. It’s mind boggling.
Come to think of it, a pound of flesh is survivable, recoverable. They wanted to repeal a POTUS duly elected with 70M votes in 2008 and 65.9M votes in 2012.

Heavy volumes of traffic were reported on the Beltway during Friday morning’s commute because of the rain, police authorities said, but there were no major incidents related to a protest by about 30 tractor-trailers and pickups against what organizers describe as excessive government intrusion.
Maryland and Virginia police officials said at mid-morning that the truck protesters appeared to have broken up into smaller groups and were traveling at the same speed as the rest of traffic along the Beltway.
In Virginia, the trucks were traveling in the right lane of the Beltway earlier in the morning, keeping pace with other traffic — around 40 to 45 miles per hour, due to the wet road conditions, said Virginia State Police spokesman Corinne N. Geller.
But by mid-morning, she said, the group was becoming harder to track.
“They’re kind of splitting off into smaller groups,” Geller said as she was monitoring the truckers on cameras from the state’s public safety center in Fairfax. “As long as they’re not impeding the flow of traffic, they’re good to go.”
He said the group had tried to register protesters at meeting spots along Interstate 95, but it had trouble keeping track of groups and where they were driving in from so they abandoned writing it down. It was unclear — even to him and Lee — just how many protesters were out on the Beltway.
Yet another fuck up by rwnj’s.
Thom Hartmanm as hostage negotiator (Yeah! Yeah! Watch it or not – It’s not one of the must-sees)
There’s an awful lot of shouting going on in this vid and not enough negotiating. However, Hartmann does point out some relevant bits of info.
The general in charge of the US Air Force’s long-range nuclear missiles has been sacked due to “loss of trust and confidence”, officials have said.
The Air Force said Maj Gen Michael Carey’s removal was for “behaviour during a temporary duty assignment”.
The sacking was not linked to the operation of the nuclear arsenal, which was safe, the officials insisted.
On Wednesday the US Navy announced an admiral overseeing nuclear weapons forces had been sacked from the role.
That was due to illegal gambling activities, officials said.

“If we simply do our jobs the way we’re supposed to, we can’t force Obama to give us stuff.”
The fear of ‘precedent’
By Steve Benen
Second, let’s not brush past the underlying GOP fear: Republicans want things from their policy wish list, and believe threatening to hurt Americans on purpose is the only realistic way to achieve their goals. It’s why they’re suddenly terrified of a clean debt-ceiling increase. “Hold on a sec,” they’re saying. “If we simply do our jobs the way we’re supposed to, we can’t force Obama to give us stuff.”
But — and I’m just spitballing here — Republicans could try something truly radical. They could try working on a policy agenda and then reaching out to Democrats in the hopes of reaching compromises. This would, I’m afraid, require both sides to make concessions, which the right isn’t comfortable with, but if GOP lawmakers were willing to try this, I have some good news for them:
There’s plenty of precedent for this approach working quite well.
