Seems hard to understand that the GOP can’t get the message.

Here’s more on another grassroots campaign, aiming for the 2014 elections.

It’s depressing to think that OFA and Americans for Responsible Solutions combined total of $30 million is dwarfed by the likes of the Koch Brothers, Sherman Adelson, etc. And that SCOTUS will no doubt open the spigots even wider this year for unlimited campaign contributions by the miserly plutocrats who only care about themselves, and not a whit about the country they live in.

In October 2012, Malala indicated (in her native tongue) that PBO was her “ideal” It’s on a Youtube video, so you don’t have to take my word for it. So when these idiots try to use Malala against PBO, simply because she expressed a concern to him, throw it right back in their faces….

    Good news in Arizona.

This success story should offset the “Solyndra scandal” but I doubt MSM will pick up on this.

Also saw on the Google blog that they have invested in another solar project, most recently in CA’s Imperial County (southeastern most CA county, abuts Yuma Arizona, San Diego County and has the Salton Sea and El Centro as prominent locations (El Centro’s motto is something like “Where the sun goes for Winter).

From my perch overseas, I’ve also been watching the run-up to the government shutdown in Washington. At times, I have tried to explain it to bemused foreigners. Many of them think, mistakenly, that Americans are having an argument about the budget or the deficit. I have to put them straight: This is an attempt by one part of the U.S. political system to use the budgetary process to stop the implementation of a single law, the Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”). If my interlocutors come from democratic countries, they then look puzzled.

If they read the commentary pouring out of Washington, they are even more confused, as am I. What surprises — and shocks — me is how many people who have written, blogged or self-righteously tweeted about the results of various polls on these events, as if they matter. Do 47 percent of Americans oppose Obamacare? Do 73.7 percent oppose Obamacare? Do 97 percent of Republicans hate Obamacare even more than they hate death and taxes? Who cares? In a functioning democracy, it doesn’t matter what the majority happens to think at any given moment. What matters is what the legitimate, representative, legal institutions have already decided.

Americans are paying a high price for this week’s events. The cost of shutting down the federal government, for a few days or even a few weeks, pales in comparison to the damage done to the credibility of the United States abroad — and the credibility of democracy itself.

    ‘A REPUBLICAN DEFAULT TAX’

Obama calls shutdown ‘a Republican default tax’

    By Nancy Cooper

    —————————————————–

President Obama was clear in his weekly address on Saturday morning about who owns what. He spoke protectively about “our economy.” He talked firmly about “your government.”

He laid the blame for the suffering of many Americans onto what he called–twice–”this Republican shutdown.” And he stuck a shiv into his opponents by describing the shutdown’s economic effect as “a Republican default tax.”
    .
    .
I want you to remember: this is not normal,” the president said. “Our government is closed for the first time in 17 years. A political party is risking default for the first time since the 1700s. This is not normal. That’s why we have to put a stop to it. Not only because it’s dangerous, but because it saps everyone’s faith in our extraordinary system of self-government. And that hurts us all.”

    Good evening, Obots.

I promised myself a politics-free Saturday, and I kept my promise. We woke up late, had a late breakfast, went to the store, hung out on our front porch in glorious LA October sunshine, and made burgers on our indoor grill. And i’m on my 4th Manhattan.

I’ll wait to see how all of this plays out. Either the GOP plays ball, and ends up losing narrowly in 2014. Or it crashes everything, and will be wiped out for the foreseeable future.

Did the ‘pubs ever stop to think that no matter how this ends, it won’t ever be the same for them. The divorce is final. I don’t see the Teanutbutters and the Rinos getting back together. PBO derangement has the House ‘Pubs at each others throats, and the Senate ‘Pubs mad at the House ‘Pubs. Now ‘Pub governors are getting in the fray. There’s despair among the RWNJs who are looking to primary everybody. The moderate pub voters are too afraid to talk above a whisper. There is an identity problem where some don’t know whether to call themselves Republican, conservative, libertarian, independent, or as Jindal calls them….stupid.

    //………………..

Why did the White House outright reject the House’s offer and why did the Senate Democrats reject Sen. Susan Collins’ plan?

It’s not because the deals were not good enough; it’s because they were deals.

Thanks VC – Booman has been convinced for all time that Boehner will not allow the default. I just hope he is right

“Admittedly, the Senate Republicans’ filibuster of Harry Reid’s motion to proceed to a vote on extending the debt ceiling will make some people nervous, but there is no reason to be nervous. There is virtually zero chance that the country is going to default. In fact, the Democrats have such an immense advantage right now that they are actually in a position to hold the Republicans hostage. With the clock clicking down, John Boehner will be desperate when he eventually realizes that his options are exhausted and he needs Democratic votes to avoid causing a global economic calamity. “

        October 12, 2013 at 11:55 pm

For me the problem is, Booman’s conviction aside, I do NOT TRUST Boehner!! I’ve seen him do too many unexpectedly negative things since he’s taken over the gavel. I can’t point offhand to ONE occasion when Boehner has kept his word or spoken with authority and sincerity. Fortunately, I do trust PBHO implicitly to do the best in his power and in any circumstances FOR THE COUNTRY/world.

As I said – “I HOPE Booman is right”. I worry more about Cantor – he hides behind the scenes and whispers to Boehner all the hate in the world. They both seem to think destroying the world economy is a necessary part of their role to bring down PBO.

IMO, Cantor is a weasel. Then again, I do NOT like any of the GOP leader, which tells me a lot. I’m normally someone who can find SOMETHING to like in those I meet, even when I readily determine we will never be close.

Bobfr, this has been one the more enjoyable evenings in a while (most of my heavy class load is over for a month or so). It also happens to be “Indian New Year/Navaratri” The Navratri commences on the first day (pratipada) of the bright fortnight of the lunar month of Ashwin. The festival is celebrated for nine nights once every year during the beginning of October, although as the dates of the festival are determined according to the lunar calendar, the festival may be held for a day more or a day less……. So you are very intuitive :) I’m currently enjoying my 5th Stella Artois……each one gets better and better!

        • October 12, 2013 at 11:08 pm

Well, my friend, I’ve just learned what a ‘Stella Artois’ is, because of you, and, way more importantly, have a much greater appreciation of Navaratri than ever before.

So, Cheers!!!! (my glass of wine in hand) and Happiest of Navaratri’s to you, LP!

One of the many gifts Chips has given all of us is a community of such diverse cultures and an opportunity to learn, in addition to supporting President Obama.

LP, that is such an amazingly generous gesture – the image alone is way more than necessary!!!

Perhaps someday we can open that bottle, with many of our dear TODers gathered around the table, and enjoy a blissful moment, not merely because of the quality of the wine, but because of the quality of those gathered.

    • October 12, 2013 at 11:12 pm

      I think *pigs ain’t just fly’n* may be an understatement…. Even DC’s high-minded, #Newstainers, are taking notice!

“THEY told me,” Martin Sheen’s Willard says to Marlon Brando’s Kurtz in “Apocalypse Now,” at the end of a long journey up the river, “that you had gone totally insane, and that your methods were unsound.”

His baldness bathed in gold, his body pooled in shadow, Kurtz murmurs: “Are my methods unsound?”

And Willard — filthy, hollow-eyed, stunned by what he’s seen — replies: “I don’t see any method at all, sir.”

This is basically how reasonable people should feel about the recent conduct of the House Republicans.

You could compare the behavior of current House Republicans to the diplomatic sleepwalking that led to World War I, but at least, in that case, the various powers had reasonable theories of how they would actually win the ensuing war. Or you could compare it to Paraguay’s decision in the 1860s to declare war on both Brazil and Argentina at once, but at least Paraguay’s armed forces managed to win some victories before being ground into defeat.

      • 94 99ts
        October 12, 2013 at 11:35 pm

… the rise of a populist right that often sees opposition as an end unto itself; the willingness of too many media figures, activists and politicians to stoke that wing’s worst impulses”

The media has as much to answer for as the GOP in stoking up the tea party. Apart from anything else the media aided and abetted Sarah Palin’s attack which led to the Gabby Giffords horror. Palin should have been relegated to the garbage heap – but still they breathlessly report her every move.

      • October 13, 2013 at 2:33 am

Upon viewing ‘Apocalypse Now’ when it first appeared, my reactions were numerous, but one of them that has remained persistent ever since is that I do not consider any, absolutely any, form of violence ‘entertainment.’

That movie crystallized such a diverse range of personal experiences, not least of which were my wretched memories of dead, dear friends who gave their life in the abomination, in the LIE that was America’s war on the Vietnamese.

So, I knew, from the moment of the tragedy of 9/11 that GWD & gang would, once again, coerce America into yet another conflagration that not only was unjustified, but also was a premeditated pursuit of fascist, cash flow outcomes for the #MIC that President Eisenhower eloquently warned Americans because that is ALL that America’s War in Vietnam was.

History has proven that assessment of #GWB’s actions 100 % accurate.

What we have been witnessing since 20 Jan 2009 is way more dangerous – and that, in and of itself, is horrifying.

When President Obama won re-election, some of us knew that what we were going to experience, once and for all, was actually not the ‘3rd Reconstruction’ but the final, mega-battle to end the Civil War.

Any doubt that that assessment of the situation was fantasy, conspiracy theory, tin foil territory ….. was comprehensively resolved on 1 Oct 2013.

The Civil War did not end 20 August 1866.

It is for US to end it.

We can only do so by supporting President Obama and Dems in the Senate, House & State Houses throughout the Union.

Make no mistake, YOU are living at that moment in history when the promise of America either prevails or becomes a Ph.D. dissertation by some pedantic kid comparing America to Greece, Rome, whatever …..

No escaping each Citizen’s personal responsibility – Preserve the American Promise or live the horror of FAIL.

#TrustBarack … and be eternally grateful you have that opportunity

        • October 13, 2013 at 10:49 am

There’s a reason I want to read “Team of Rivals” – I want to comprehend, from the best 20th century source we have – what happened before, during and after the American Civil War; a war we, Europeans, are taught *nothing* about in school.

I put it on my birthday wish list, and I already know I will get it.
