Hi Chips, Thanks as usual for your great posts!
Yes, indeed! WTG, Allison!
Congrats on 1st Allison!
Very fine R&S, Chips. Thank you!!!
We’ve got a history-in-the-making week ahead of us, that’s for sure.
So important we have each other thanks to Chips creating and sustaining TOD and the wonderful contributions of UT, LL, LP, Zizi, amk and all of you.
Thank you ALL for this oasis of sanity and groundedness. . . in these times that are “not normal”.
Who needs to go watch “Gravity” when we’ve got the whacko Tea Party running rough-shod over
the rules of order?
Thanks, Bobfr. Keep up your great twitter info alerts!
It’s sure to be a doozy of a week. Hang on, everybody. Keep the faith.
Yes you are!
I’m surprised Fox News or CNN have not released a poll regarding whom to blame regarding the Shutdown. I gather they already no what the results will be!
Don’t worry, they’re working on it….
Pretty tricky, shooting thru a new thread while I was posting!! HeeHee!
Penumbral Eclipse of the Moon: Oct 18-19/ 25 Aries 45.
The beginning and the end are not visible to the naked eye. Eastern Canada will experience the entire event while the rest of Canada and the US will see moonrise with the eclipse already in progress. Hybrid (Annular and Total) Eclipse of the Sun: Nov 3/ 11 Scor 16.
This is a rare hybrid of an annular and total eclipse. Some sections of the path are annular while other are total.

Central eclipse is at local apparent noon …. 12:38.8GMT
So, now you know!!!
Thank you MP. I always enjoy your information.

Great article, Hopefruit – thanks for posting it. To my way of thinking, trying to prove that healthcare.gov is a failure is going to be the attack the healthcare deniers are going to put all their weight behind, with help from those who shouldn’t be attacking it, such as Robert Gibbs. He should know that the best way to discuss the issues with healthcare.gov is to educate all listeners that the repugnant obstructionists have purposely weighted the system to fail, by not setting up their own sites and by not allowing expanded Medicaid.
The great President Barack Obama has set this up to change healthcare as we know it for generations to come. He has never been short-sighted, as are some around him and all who attack him.
This is going to be a fight that has only just begun and that we must win. I have studied Obamacare at great length and it is a history-defining change that America can believe in.
As a personal example, my husband and I would save approximately $100/mo. from what we’re paying now for far superior coverage which would enable us to actually prevent illness. One would think the gop would at least want healthy workers.
Thank you, Sue!
When I think about the Affordable Care Act (ACA), my eyes start to tear! Your description of benefits warm my heart. ACA is the most important legislation since Medicare. I am of the age that I recall the early implementation of Medicare. As a college student, I noticed senior ladies buying huge amounts of cat-food at the local grocery store. I was fascinated by the care and love I assumed they had for their pets, because as they made purchases of cat-food, I never saw them buy other food items. I was monitoring cases at the district court for a class when I heard testimony that senior women were actually purchasing cat-food for personal consumption. I have never forgotten that revelation. Today, healthcare costs were adding to our overall economic insecurity. With the passage of the ACA, the cost curve is being lowered.
When I retired, my healthcare premium costs increased each year until ACA was passed and signed into law. I am proud I worked 6 days a week for a full year and a half, calling around the nation to get citizens to put pressure on their representatives to pass ACA. There were many, many regular people who came to the DNC headquarters everyday to make calls, and to canvass neighborhoods in VA, MD, PA, DE, and DC to fight for healthcare reform. We applaud our awesome President, Leaders Pelosi and Reid, and all Democrats for taking this stand. We worked so hard, and others around this nation worked long hours to get this wonderful law enacted. We shall not turn away at this important moment.
Thank you Gwendolyn for your tireless service in getting ACA implemented. I will not listen to the shutdown/debt ceiling shenanigans – it is a diversion to give them time to find their next attack on ACA and to keep Americans polarized with fear. You are so strong and courageous, such a wonderful example, and yes I applaud Senator Reid for what he did then and what he’s doing now, and especially applaud Nancy Pelosi. I remember sitting at the kitchen table with my husband when all hope seemed gone and I heard Nancy Pelosi say that ACA would become the law of the land. I will never forget the feeling of hope her words inspired in me – and by gosh it happened! We are all indebted to the tireless folk like you and the inspired leaders who have gone to Washington to make this country and the world a better place.
Thank you again Gwendolyn.
Excellent comment, Sue! Look, as a Senior citizen, I am already benefiting from ObamaCare in two important areas: Free annual check-ups and lower payments for prescription medication.
My #Obamacare cost per year $660.00. Cheapest insurance now from a company is $410.00 a month. Savings w/ #ACA is $4260.00 a year— EdwardGlen (@GLEN_MICH) October 14, 2013

HEADLINE: Setting the Record Straight on GOP’s Ritual Humiliation and Democratic Refusal to Pay Ransom
// There seems to be bit of a meme in the conservative media land – and some of it is spilling over the to “we don’t report the facts” main stream media land – that smelling blood after the GOP’s suicide-bomber caucus-led government shutdown completely blew up in their face, the president and Democrats in Congress are now demanding additional concessions from the Republicans. Kicking the GOP when it’s down, the Democrats are looking to include in a deal to avoid default and reopen the government a provision to avoid the next round of sequester cuts, slated to begin January 15. That’s how the story goes, anyway.
Nothing could be farther from the truth. Yes, the Democrats are asking to avert the next round of harmful sequester cuts. But they are not doing so as a condition for reopening the government and paying America’s bills. After being stuck in the Tea Party mud of the disastrous shutdown, it is the GOP that is looking for a way out – without complete and utter public humiliation. Trying to find that escape hatch, the Republicans have proposed bundling extraneous items.
Sen. Susan Collin’s (R-ME) proposal includes two such face-saving measure: delaying the medical device tax under the Affordable Care Act, while locking in the sequester cuts. Democrats had long agreed to the sequester level spending to keep the government open while budget negotiations continue, but they and the president have also long held steadfast to the position that the Republicans cannot be allowed to extract concessions for that purpose. Keeping the government open and paying our bills is not a concession on the part of the Republicans; it is their job. We do not pay ransom for Congress to do their job. And so if Republicans want the Democrats to give something, like delaying the medical device tax, they need to give something in return – something other than just re-opening the government and stopping the threat of default. //
HF, we were on the same page posting this fabulous breakdown by Spandan C.

Setting the Record Straight on GOP’s Ritual Humiliation and Democratic Refusal to Pay Ransom
Posted by Spandan C at 8:32 AM
The Democratic side of the argument remains the same: Republicans have two options. They can either (a) pass a clean continuing resolution at current (sequester) funding levels and authorize necessary credit to pay our bills without anything else attached to it – no face saving measure, nothing, or
You cannot begin a crisis by demanding ransom just to keep the government open and pay America’s bills, and then complain that you have to be given something so that you can get out of it and not look humiliated. You cannot go down that road and when you get blowback from the American people, pout your lips and complain that the people who always wanted to keep the government open and pay our bills aren’t giving you candy for your agreement in doing so. The reason for GOP’s ritual humiliation is not that Democrats refuse to pay ransom, it is that Republicans demanded the ransom in the first place.
Good work, Allison! I notice you have become a frequent visitor on the podium.

The Real Problem
The root cause of our country’s political problems is that the base of the Republican Party has gone stark-raving mad. Period.

Because those were the Good Ole Days when Republicans were satisfied with drug companies and other big businesses getting a windfall from the government.
Those were the days………

Good for you Dudette. Good for you!
Thanks nospin. It just chaps me, these people out there whining BS about freaking monuments being closed when folks in need of food, shelter and medical care are left to suffer, by the very people who closed down the damned monuments! Ugh!
Thank you, Dudette. I am so drained of these scumbags that it is taking me 4 days to get my pressure under control. I am working very hard to stay calm. My brother returned back from his out of the country trip last evening, and I was very careful to speak with calmness so he would not pick up on my condition. It went well.
I am trying to keep control by keeping my presence on a calm level because we have so much to get these scumbags away from our president. So 2014 is fast approaching so we all have to keep ready for this fight of getting the House in 2014, and keep the Senate solid.
I am so strong, but the hatred is so vile that I have to keep my hope high and my heart filled with love. I will call it like it is, TOD family. The teaparty people are ugly, vile and putrid people. The Confederate Flag in front of the White just did it for me. It is simply Hatred of this black president and his family. I will not bend over for these scumbags.
Yes, I am calm, loving, compassionate, and one of deep prayer and meditations, but this hatred is way too much. But I know one thing for sure: We elected a president who is representing the American people, and Chips and all of my brilliant TOD family members remind me daily to keep holding on. These people are going to choke on their own shit. Watch it. HZ
Thank you Dudette for all your no nonsense push back! I mean these idiots really make me want to holler! Something is deeply wrong with the people who value monuments and parks over the day to day basic survival needs of people being devastated by the Republican shut down of government.

I don’t recall him ever saying that seriously.
It was more of that “sources say” crap from Politico.
“But Biden’s deals rubbed Democrats raw. He gave up too much, they said.
And for that, they have frozen him out — at least for now.
“None of the deals Biden has struck have aged well from the perspective of the Democratic Caucus,” said one Senate Democratic official aware of Reid’s face-to-face insistence that Biden be excluded.”

“It was more of that “sources say” crap from Politico.”
I totally agree with you, Donna! This piece strikes me as yet another POLITICO propaganda of “Divide and Conquer” intended to cause dissensions within the Democratic ranks. I am absolutely certain that both Harry Reid and Joe Biden, if the person who wrote this article cared to ask them, would strongly disavow this nonsense! By the way, who exactly counts as a “Senate Democratic official”? Does this mean one of the 52 Democratic Senators? If so why not, at the very least, mention that the quote was offered by a sitting U.S. Senator?
It’s so infuriating that right now the delay in resolving this crisis is that the ‘Whatever It Is We’re Against It’ crowd is in desperate need of some face saving that they expect the adults to provide for them. They made their bed now they have to lie in it. I am so sick of these sociopaths in our government. It’s going to take a clean sweep in the 2014 midterms to rid the country of this malady. Enough already.
Thinking of all those saying the Dems must provide face saving strategies so the GOP House members can agree to not sink our economy strikes me as being as bad as giving them what they want so they do not sink our economy. Why similar? If the impact of what they are doing is lessened how does that help them learn by consequences? What will deter them from doing it again? My late husband and I believed that the best teaching for our kids was for them to learn by having to deal with the consequences of their actions. Seems this shut down is a childish action by the GOP House so the childrearing rule should apply.
