Think Progress: Obama Administration: Obamacare Will Meet Enrollment Targets Despite Website Glitches

Obama administration officials said on Monday that they expect to meet their targets for enrolling the uninsured in Obamacare despite the well publicized glitches in HealthCare.gov — the federal government’s online portal for buying health care coverage in the law’s new marketplaces.

Speaking to reporters after President Obama publicly addressed the law’s rocky roll out from the White House, senior administration officials expressed confidence that the public’s enthusiasm for obtaining coverage and the alternative pathways for signing-up for insurance will ensure that the law is successful. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) predicts that seven million people will sign up for insurance in the health care exchanges between October and March, including 2.7 million young and healthy people.

Sy Mukherjee: South Dakota Doctors Urge Their Governor To Expand Medicaid Under Obamacare

South Dakota doctors are urging Gov. Dennis Daugaard (R) to expand Medicaid under Obamacare, warning that a failure to do so will hurt hospitals financially and raise health care costs for people with private insurance. Current Medicaid eligibility thresholds in most states — including South Dakota — are so demanding that they disqualify even the poorest working adults from receiving coverage through the program.

In South Dakota, 15 percent of the adult population lives at or below 100 percent of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), which works out to be about $11,500 per year for an individual. But justeight percent of adults are covered by Medicaid. Under Obamacare’s Medicaid expansion, any adult making up to 138 percent FPL would be able enroll in the public health insurance program. That would end up cutting South Dakota’s uninsurance rate by more than half. Without the expansion, on the other hand, South Dakota’s poorest will have to continue relying on the emergency room for their medical services.

USA Today: NJ Gov. Christie Drops Challenge To Same-Sex Marriage

Hours after same-sex couples lined up Monday across the state to marry, Gov. Chris Christie dropped his administration’s efforts to end gay marriage. Christie and his Acting Attorney General John Hoffman had filed an appeal to the State Supreme Court after a lower court ruled that same-sex couples could begin to get married in New Jersey at midnight Monday, but Christie withdrew the appeal Monday morning.

Three couples married on the steps of the Paramount Theater before a crowd of about 50 people. It was an historic and emotional momentthat brought tears to some guests as they watched the couples wed under a full moon in the cold wind, one of many throughout the state scheduled at 12:01 a.m. after the state Supreme Court refused to delay a lower court order for the state to begin recognizing same-sex marriages.

TPM: Obama Phones Hollande Following Spying Allegations

President Barack Obama on Monday phoned French President François Hollande to discuss reports of unauthorized spying by the American government on French citizens, according to a White House statement.

“The President and President Hollande discussed recent disclosures in the press – some of which have distorted our activities and some of which raise legitimate questions for our friends and allies about how these capabilities are employed,” read the White House statement. “The President made clear that the United States has begun to review the way that we gather intelligence, so that we properly balance the legitimate security concerns of our citizens and allies with the privacy concerns that all people share. The two Presidents agreed that we should continue to discuss these issues in diplomatic channels moving forward.”

Bloomberg: New Texas Abortion Laws Will Harm Women, Doctor Testifies

New Texas laws requiring abortion doctors to have local hospital admitting privileges and allowing only physicians to dispense pregnancy-ending drugs will harm women, a doctor testified at the start of a trial. Planned Parenthood last month sued to block the measures signed into law by Governor Rick Perry on July 18 and scheduled to take effect Oct. 29, arguing they unconstitutionally burden women’s rights. “I believe that both of these provisions will harm women – – harm Texas women,” Paul Fine, a Houston doctor who performs the procedures, testified today as Planned Parenthood’s first witness. The rules are “absolutely not” necessary, he said.

The legislation requires a doctor who performs the procedure to have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles (48 kilometers) of his clinic. It also eliminates the availability of drug-induced abortions after the seventh week of a pregnancy. “One in three health centers that currently provide abortion will be forced to stop,” eliminating services in six Texas cities, Planned Parenthood said in a court filing. “There are currently only five Texas cities where a woman can get an abortion after 15 weeks; if the act takes effect, there will be three.” The 30-mile rule is medically unjustified because fewer than 0.3 percent of abortions nationwide result in hospitalization, according to the group.

Gary Strauss: Holiday Present: $3.15 A Gallon Gas By Christmas. Lowest Since 2010

Gasoline prices are likely to continue sliding for the rest of the year and could fall to $3.15 a gallon by Christmas, the lowest national holiday season average since 2010. That’s about 20 cents a gallon lower than current prices, now averaging $3.36 a gallon. Crude oil prices fell below $100 a barrel Monday for the first time since July, settling at about $99. The 1.8% drop came on word of a fresh Energy Information Administration report on higher-than-expected domestic supplies.

AAA spokesman Michael Green notes that sub-$3 a gallon gas is available in about 24 states, and overall, the cheapest gas prices nationwide since January. “Lower prices are a real tangible benefit for most people, who need to drive to live their lives,” Green says. “This means more savings for people and more money in their pockets.”

I had forgotten to mention earlier, this but on the previous thread, PBO was already looking at the pregnant woman with a concerned expression when they were just walking out to the Rose Garden. Check the first pic below the video of his speech, and you will see what I’m talking about. OBAMA CARES.

You are clicking the video directly from the white house youtube page. Where you see ‘Recent Uploads,’ click on that and it will take you to the full video and other videos posted recently. Then when you click on the WH Presser video, it will take you to the normal youtube video page and you can copy the URL and post it here.

This is the video you needed, I believe.

Most of the gripes about the ACA website problems are from people who have never worked in IT, let alone bothered to have a functioning memory when it comes to using any computer or popular website. Glitches, particularly on roll-out, are the norm, not the exception.

    • 17 vcprezofan2
      October 21, 2013 at 7:36 pm

I read your post earlier – thank you for the insights and reminders. It’s clear (to me anyways) that the gripers don’t really want to remember that glitches are par for the online course. The loudest, most persistent of them simply have an axe to grind, and we all know what that is.

    • October 21, 2013 at 7:45 pm

So true, Norbrook. You don’t need to have lived at the epicenter of IT for the past several decades to know just how mind numbingly ridiculous these #NEWSTAINERS are behaving.

Thank you so much Norbrook for the excellent post at your blog! It was quite educational for people like me who know zilch about computer technology.

What about the big video game; a new version just rolled out. It only plays online, not on the players computer. The day it opened 12:01 a.m. the site crashed because everyone was trying to play at once. Stuff happens. They are just furious that this ACA is going to be and BIG success.

Hi everyone:) Was listening to Thom Hartmann in the car this afternoon, and he had a woman, CPA for 25 years, from WA state call in. SHe called to say that many of her long time clients were calling to see if the huge DECREASE IN HEALTHCARE COSTS, due to their exchanges was normal and ok! They couldn’t believe how much money they were saving!!!

VC, Congrats on #1! I really need to learn that lesson. Usually, when I sign on to TOD, I always start with “Rise and Shine post.” And as a curious moron I read all the comments until I hit “New post” on TOD. Then I go through the same routine until I hit the comment advising me of the newt post, and the next post until I reach the las post. By the time I get to the last post, almost every one has gone to sleep. It’s on my days off that I get a chance to engage in a dialog with TOD members in real time.

Hi Nathk. I learnt the hard way too, and still get caught sometimes. Some threads get so enthralling that I sink right in, taking my time and surfacing only when I hit ‘new post’, at which point I look around and I’m all alone. I confess this past week or so I haven’t been reading threads thoroughly – which of course means that I sometimes feel a bit out of step. Ah well.

They are getting desperate…..Chuck Todd…..Ezra Klein, DC/NY pundits. Once the glitches are solved……these idiots would have to find another line of work if they want to remain relevant. All their “Obama” Katrinas. Bush references, etc are worthless. This is key, because this is the portion of the electorate which is most dependable when it comes to voting in mid-terms. And a lot of this demographic is located in the so-called safe gerrymandered districts. The key is to keep pounding away at the GOP and their attempts to weaken SS and Medicare. We know how Ryan et al talk about how they plan to strengthen Medicare and how that just isn’t true. So before the GOP starts its misleading push, we have to be out there preempting them.

This will likely be like when they were convinced the youth had ALL lost their enthusiasm for PBO and wouldn’t vote, yada, yada. What DO they know, really? They have been wrong so often, that I wonder they have the effrontery to keep making predictions.

Don’t like HuffPo, but this is a good move for the Dems:

    considering this:
“Rep. Steve Southerland (R-Florida) has been leading the GOP effort to slash the food stamp program, called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. “For the past six months, Southerland… [has] delivered 45 speeches about food stamps… and presented his idea to 13 governors,” Eli Saslow wrote in a profile of the congressman in the Washington Post last month. Southerland, who fought for the $39 billion worth of cuts and another provision that imposes new work requirements on food assistance recipients, told state human service secretaries last year that food-stamp reform is ‘what I’m about.'”

What a vile creature. Florida, please send him packing next year! He was elected with the TP 2010 “wave,” represents FL-2, Panama City, Panhandle area (Morning Joe’s home turf).

This ‘focus on my family’ rationale always sounds so insincere. You’d think by now they’d have found an alternate excuse/reason. Except of course when it’s really the family. ;)

    • October 21, 2013 at 8:57 pm

      Hopefully charges pending.

Griffin was a key appointment by Alberto Gonzales when he dismissed all the AGs who didn’t agree with Bush. Think he worked in Rove’s office before he got his plum assignment.

Will be disappointed if he just shows up for work one day at Heritage. MSM completely dropped the ball on this Bush scandal (so many to choose from), yet don’t hesitate to label any controversy, no matter how trivial, a “scandal” in the current Administration.
