The implosion of the GOP brand, in one more chart
By Greg Sargent
October 29 at 2:09 pm
With Democrat Terry McAuliffe taking a double digit lead in the Virginia gubernatorial contest, leading observers are increasingly looking at Virginia as an indicator of national political trends.
New Washington Post/SRBI polling in Virginia, which puts McAuliffe up 51-39, also demonstrates very clearly the dangers these trends pose to Republicans.
The crack Post polling team has produced a chart based on this poll that shows the GOP brand has collapsed among the very constituencies Republicans must improve their standing among in order to remain competitive in the future, both in Virginia and at the national level:
It’s almost astonishing how poorly the Republicans are doing in Virginia. When I first moved to this country, I would joke with my friends about how Republican Virginia used to be. Things surely have changed. It’s pretty much a blue state.
Tell him, Harry.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-NV) office responded on Tuesday to Sen. Tom Coburn’s (R-OK) comment on Monday in which he called Reid an “absolute a–hole.”
“Nothing says ‘comity’ like childish playground name-calling, especially from a senator who has not sponsored a single piece of successful bipartisan legislation during his entire Senate career,” Reid’s spokesman Adam Jentleson told the Hill.
Harry for the win.
Knock out by a huge left upper cut!
Wouldn’t you LOVE to see that?
Thought I’d add to your getting that quote out …
@SenatorReid Thx for reminding us @TomCoburn hasn't sponsored single piece of successful bipartisan legislation during entire Senate career.— (@JOBoomr) October 29, 2013
I find it obnoxious that Coburn and, I think, others use their civilian credentials as part of their Senate I.D.
That’s like Boehner’s using “Dogcatcher” as part of his House I.D.
Love how @TomCoburn identifies himself as "Sen.-M.D." Must think he's in Senate to practice medicine, not sponsor bipartisan legislation.— (@JOBoomr) October 29, 2013
Remember this from January of 2009 ? It was BEFORE PBO was sworn in.
The Senate conducted its first vote of the 111th Congress –- on a Sunday no less -– and overrode the objections of Senator Tom Coburn, Republican of Oklahoma, to push forward a public lands bill.
On a vote of 66-12, the Senate agreed to take up a package of 160 different bills joined under an umbrella measure. The package has been dubbed a Tomnibus since the whole idea is to merge multiple proposals opposed by Mr. Coburn -– a physician known in the Senate as Dr. No. — and win passage all at once. Fifty-nine votes was the threshold.
The bill, which faces more debate and possible approval later this week, sets aside 200 million acres for public wilderness in nine states. It adds more than 1,000 miles to the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System and 2,800 miles of new trails to the federal system.

What an absolutely glorious response.

OY, twitter is rolling out new stuff……..glitchy
Obliterate twitter! Twitter for No one!
Why are none of the big guns, POTUS,VPOTUS, FLOTUS, CLINTONS not campaigning for Buono but are for McCauliffe?
Buono is 33 points down.
MSM promotes and cheerleads for Christie. They would have another reason to baselessly attack this administration if VP or POTUS got involved.
Always wise to choose your battles, and this would not be a wise battle to enter into with voting less than a week away.
I feel bad for NJ that the national media has taken such a fancy to Christie.
It’s unfortunate that Buono cannot get her story heard. She has a compelling life-story.
I liked her appearance on @Lawrence in March. MSNBC has totally screwed up their Oct 15 website re-launch. Now I get zero hits on a search for “Barbara Buono” on @Lawrence’s homepage. Alas, before Oct 15 I could find that interview with @Lawrence.
Just so you are aware – MSNBC is one of Christie’s BIGGEST media cheerleaders. I will NEVER forget the time when they gave him an entire hour of undeserved air time just to “announce” that he was not running for President in 2012….
MSNBC spends hours upon hours condemning PBO on a variety of GOP-contrived issues such as NSA, ACA website, etc, but will not even touch upon the fact that Christie has defunded the NJ public school system, laid off hard-working teachers, is anti-gay, anti-immigrant, etc and most of all is a Koch puppet.
Diane – I’ve been thinking the same thing. Could be lots of reasons – I don’t really know anything about her, but maybe she’s not such a good candidate? (I only saw her in a couple of interviews and during one debate, and she seemed to hold her own quite well.) I’d rather have Buono than Christie, but I don’t live in NJ at present or I’d surely vote for her.
It is really simple. Buono, unfortunately, doesn’t have a chance of winning. If POTUS and others campaigned for her, the media would ignore the VA results and talk about how NJ voters were really repudiating PBO. Yes, if he campaigned for her, it might close the gap a little, but even if she lost by 1% the story wouldn’t be how PBO helped her close a 33% gap to 1%, but how NJ rejected PBO.
I guess all of you are right. I know she campigned very little if at all in south Jersey. If it wasn’t for the NJ Ed. Association ads, some people might not know she is running. I’ve mentioned before some dems in power are in bed with Christie for their own self-serving agenda. But the rank and file dems like teachers should not be voting for him. I’m just disgusted that a bully and nasty man could win and a good man like the president has to put up with these constant attacks.
I wrote this before but for some reason it didn’t post. I appreciate everyone’s insights. I am so discouraged as how a bully and nasty man like Christie could be reelected and with such a big margin. NJ is 44th in job development, Until Sandy the unemployment rate was over 9%. He hates women, teachers, unions, poor people, gays. But and this is the most disheartening, dems in positions of power are in bed with Christie for their own self-serving interests. And Buono really did not run a statewide campaign. You’d never know she’s running in south Jersey.
I agree. Buono is Martha Coakley redux….
The people of NJ will have to own their votes for Christie, and the consequences.
Buono has a compelling life story. I will find her interview with @Lawrence in March and post it to TOD later today.
Thanks so much!
Buono wouldn’t be helped by them enough to make their efforts worthwhile. I guess.

This is a *nice* way of saying that the narcissist meglomaniac Greenwald was lying.
He knew that the MSM would dutifully bury the 2006 dates on the leaked documents (TV and radio omit enitrely, print bury the dates in the middle of their articles).
The lock-step MSM is really being exposed now. CBS and NBC are united in saying that POTUS lied about being able to keep your insurance. They frame the discussion from the “how can we make POTUS look bad” POV.

Homeschooling reading comprehension
Jan Crawford has been a total failure ever since she left abc news as a Supreme Court journalist to join cbs news as a correspondent. She was disgustingly bad last year during the campaign (she was covering the Romney campaign) with her constant chilling for Mitt Romney. She’s the epitome of lack of journalistic integrity. She had no qualm lying about President Obama during the 2012 campaign, so I see no reason for her to stop her witch hunt routine right now. She’s despicable along with 85% of so called mainstream media newstainers who feels that their job is to protect and lift up the dying republican party by continuously lying and making up stories about anything related to the Obama administration. Newsflash to Jan and every others media hacks who called themselves journalist: your job is not to be a mouthpiece for the GOP, your job is to report the news truthfully and without bias to the American people.
I hope CBS is hearing from its viewers about her. You don’t get to lie to push your point of view.
Why Losing Your Junk Insurance is a Good Thing
For the past week or so, the media has been replete with stories about people getting letters from their insurance companies that cancel their current coverage and replace it with a more expensive health insurance plan, providing the insured the option to look into their state’s exchange for coverage. Insurance companies are doing their damnest to blame the Affordable Care Act and President Obama for this, but the truth is that the policies that are being canceled are being canceled for one reason and one reason alone: they do not meet the minimum coverage requirements under the Affordable Care Act.
So what are these minimum coverage requirements? They are simple and essential:
As individuals are transitioned from their current plans to plans in exchanges that offer a much broader range of coverage along with a subsidy for most everyone who is currently in a plan that doesn’t cover one or more of the essential services, it will become obvious that losing junk insurance in favor of gaining good coverage at a subsidized price is beneficial. It is also a primary goal of the Affordable Care Act – for everyone to have access to coverage that is not just affordable but also comprehensive.
So funny to see Michele Bachmann part of the House Intelligence Committee. Can't stop laughin'! Wonder if she knows what "NSA" stands for!— (@JOBoomr) October 29, 2013
She seems scared to even ask a question. Ha.
JOOOOOO for the win!!!!!
Nancy SMASH is such an eloquent speaker. She just gave a lovely tribute to the late Senator Foley.
Now “turtle” is up and speaking – UGH!
So totally out of freakin’ order and disrespectful for Boehner to collectively group “Presidents, Vice Presidents” when he began to speak, like it’s no big deal to have any of them at Speaker Foley’s memorial. One should always acknowledge the sitting President and Vice President first, in any event. When Speaker for Life Pelosi stood, she didn’t use last names, but acknowledged – while looking at them, seated – “Mr. President, Mr. President, Mr. Vice President, Mr. Vice President.
I missed seeing who the former Vice President is who’s attending. If it’s Gore, then I think I just realized why Boehner referred to them all collectively, because they’re all Democrats – as Foley was – so, just bunch ‘em. #NoClass
Looks like Mondale?
Come to think of it, I don’t recall the last time Gore ever attended anything official as a former VP. Don’t think he ever got over 2000 or being so shut-out by his own efforts on climate change.
I still like Gore, but mostly just for one reason – the way he answered when a news jerk asked him shortly after the Inauguration in ’09 what advice he’d give the new President. And Gore said, “Oh, I’d hesitate to give him any advice … he’s doing so well.”
And, then, of course he went on to give him advice, but I still appreciated that one moment in time.
Ya know, just as a matter of conscience, I try not to wish anything bad on these types of people. I just sit around and wait for it. He’ll get his.
I might buy a feminine-lookin’ cigar and make myself comfortable, while I prep for him to be dragged out of the House kicking and crying. And then I’ll call for the Sgt-at-Arms (who I’ll have on my speed-dial) to change the freakin’ locks.
And I’ll yell at Boehner, as he’s yanked out, like my grandmother used to say: Get thee behind me, Satan! Ha! (That was fun picturing that, to keep my sanity. Too bad I can’t fit it in a tweet.)
Roach waste will fit!
Yes, that will fit!
My favorite line from this excellent article: ” She’s basically complaining that a new car costs more than her old shoes. ”
This woman probably never goes to the Dr on a regular basis. I say those that want to keep shitty policy, keep ‘em. They’ll change their minds soon enough.
She’s like a lot of people that think you can bite a stick while resetting a broken leg or a slug of whiskey will make you forget pain. Sheesh.
She is one of those people that this insurance is made for: you pay the insurance company money and as long as you never need health care, everyone is happy. These are the junk insurance policies that are advertised on the upper level channels of your local TV.
Consumer Reports ripped apart this class of ‘insurance’ policies as one step away from fraud. What infuriated me was that CBS took her word for everything. Most of what they needed was in the damn letter and about a half hour of Google would have blown her sob story out of the water.
Unless you are wealthy, any policy you had to carry on the individual market before ACA was junk. Hubby and I had what we thought was decent BCBS until we needed to actually use it. These changes that everyone is flipping out over – they happened EVERY year to us, with increased co-pays, deductibles and premium increases through the roof.
That CBS didn’t catch that it wasn’t a co-pay, but ALL that the insurance company would pay, that the policy didn’t have hospitalization. That’s two networks in two days who have done disgraceful stories.
And it ain’t over yet.
We all need a laugh today:

Democratic Congressman Blows Up At GOP During Obamacare Hearing: ‘Are You Really Serious?’
Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-NJ) slammed Republicans for failing to support the Affordable Care Act once it became law, challenging them to go back to their districts and tell their constituents that they’ll be taking away their coverage.
“What are you going to do about the approximately 17 million children with preexisting conditions who can no longer be denied health insurance coverage,” Parscrell asked the GOP during a House hearing on Obamacare. Standing up and pointing his finger at the other side of the aisle, he continued, “We want to go back and want to say you are no longer covered any longer — are you going to tell the parents of those kids?”
Rep. Tim Griffin (R-AR) tried to answer that question, highlighting GOP proposals to cover individuals with pre-existing condition. The reply sparked even greater outrage from Parscrell:
Your laugh for the day. Rand Paul is plagiarizing everything from Wikipedia. Stay crazy, Aqua Buddha.

She was pretty good! Repubs were scraping for zings and she just kept going.
The sneering headline news on the radio this morning led me to believe she was going to be a dolt, so I am very pleased and impressed.
Oh no, absolutely not. She was informative, concise and took no guff. She was formidable. Ryan was hoping to score a blow but I don’t think he even landed a dent.
In fact, I wish she’d been front and center for the last three years. I didn’t have a chance to watch the hearing, so I appreciate your assessment, but I thought she looked great.
Well, I think she probably had her head down, working hard to get this massive thing done. I can’t even imagine the focus it took to manage such a thing.
I have a strong and deep faith that this contrived storm will pass like all the others. People will get over their fears and realize that this is the best form of healthcare insurance available at this time. And it won’t take that long for people to see it.

And, to tell you the truth, in other situations … how would he be able to relate each and every thing the NSA is doing? or the CIA? or the FBI? Oct 29, 2013 Issues: Health Care
Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Sander Levin (D-MI) today made the following statement regarding this morning’s Ways and Means Committee hearing on healthcare.gov:
“For more than three years since the Affordable Care Act was signed into law, Republicans have had one goal in mind: repeal the law, even if it means shutting down the government and threatening to default on the full faith and credit of the U.S. That goal was vividly illustrated today when Rep. Dave Reichert said about the Affordable Care Act: ‘The chainsaw needs to come out.’ In fact, the Republican chainsaw has been out for three-plus years. Today’s hearing wasn’t about helping to make the Affordable Care Act work. It was about continuing a three-year effort to destroy it.”

It’s Orange Satan but it’s a good read. Here’s a snippet:
“If a corporation found itself in such a situation it would have done one of two things:
1) Moved sufficient funding from one bucket to another to pay for the vast spike in scope.
2) Abandoned the project.
Neither of these options were available to the Obama Administration. The budget was under the control of hostile forces and no increases had a snowball’s chance in hell of being approved. So the only “rational business” move at the Administration’s disposal was to abandon the ACA. Which would have meant surrender.
Klein even gets this. But he still draws the wrong conclusion.
‘The Obama administration deserves all the criticism it’s getting for the poor start of health law and more. Their job was to implement the law effectively — even if Republicans were standing in their way.’
What Klein is overlooking is the difference between business and politics.
The only “rational” thing for Abraham Lincoln to do when the South seceded was to have let them go. He chose a different route, and soon we were “engaged in a great civil war”. An 1861 version of Ezra Klein would have been pontificating on how the not-yet inaugurated Lincoln was a failure for letting the union fall apart.
This is war, and Klein hasn’t sufficiently realized this. Maybe his 1861 doppelganger would have, eventually. Sometimes you have to decide which side are you on. This is something that Joan Walsh gets and he doesn’t.”

Oh yikes—-not that anything he says is significant, but I see Kanye West opined on Ryan Secrest’s radio show that Kim K. was the most intriguing woman in the country, feeling the need to compare her to Michelle Obama, for some reason, saying Kim was more influential than the First Lady. He also added that they were the most dazzling couple, wardrobe wise, that no one cares what the President is wearing and that the First Lady (he called her Michelle) could not send out a bikini instagram of herself like his lovely fiancee did. Wowie-kazowie.
