Went great LL – thanks for playing Chris “phony outrage” Hayes so well! You did a fantastic job and it’s only fitting we’re getting all these Snowden news today. I’m curious to see how little Chris responds tonight.
I didn’t even hand out candy last night. Missus and I are thinking about going all out next year, costumes and all.
Gold is perfectly befitting for TOD’s Doc resident in Chief Pure Activist.
Anyone shopping around this VP Switch idea really is doing a disservice to VP Biden, who has been an incredibly loyal and competent VP to Pres Obama. They have made such an incredible pair of leaders that it’s almost like it was fated to be. I am so grateful to VP Biden’s service, and it’s really quite offensive this nonsense that Hillary Clinton would have been considered to take over from him, for what would have been purely political reasons. He’s done an amazing job.
I was really annoyed with Goldie Taylor this morning. She basically suggested that Plouffe is a liar after she saw his tweet denying this claim about the VP switch. But she only revealed herself to be the dishonest one, because she then went on to claim she had “sources” but couldn’t cite or name them. When another tweeter rightfully pointed out that uncited sources are unreliable and therefore not credible evidence, she basically told the person to STFU and threatened to block them. This is typical, and childish behavior demonstrated by certain media figures when faced with push-back for which they don’t have a proper defense.
This is the second time I’ve seen Ms. Taylor display a thin skin. Of course I’m sure she gets more than her fair share of awful trolls, but to threaten to block someone for that person correctly pointing out that her sources remain “secret” while Plouffe is coming out on record, thus calling into question her sources’ credibility, is veering into GG territory.
Goldie once told me off when I very mildly challenged her on twitter – she’s erased any respect I had for her when I first saw her doing a reading after the birth certificate nonsense. Very thin-skinned, and easily buying into the media game. Waste of time.
Like you and LL, I’ve noticed her thin-skinned reactions when challenged on Twitter too.
I remember hearing/reading that fleeting rumor, probably here. But it was never considered serious by anyone. I think there was one source—Bill Daley, who admitted the same. But it was obviously dismissed and likely never given a moment’s consideration by anyone who mattered. Blew up briefly and was gone. It was idle gossip.
There were a number of emoprog blogs that were busily stumping for it, and if I recall correctly, one of the “conservative” columnists wrote one that was supposed to be “helpful advice” suggesting it. No one took it seriously, and it there was any talk in the campaign, it was probably some campaign worker who was reading those.
But gossip that pays the authors a $5 million dollar advance.
See Nena’s link to Think Progress on why you shouldn’t read this book.
Her stunt today effectively ended any respect for her. She’s off my TL. Have ZERO time for folk like that.
And, theo, I could not agree with you more regarding the disrespect to our magnificent VP Biden this entire fiasco is.
Couldn’t agree with you more.
MSM place their thumbs on the scale in favor of drama. Hence, Hillary 2016! — someone with a proven trackrecord of DRAMA!
MSM treat VP Biden as if he were a clown; the fact he was one of the longest serving Senators in history is meaningless to them. MSM think real clowns like Herman Cain are more deserving of an office in the White House or Naval Observatory than a true statesman that we all could learn from, whether you’re Dem, GOP or Independent.
MSM fritter away their efforts on trivia, and are too lazy to even lift a finger to try and connect the dots.
Love JOE. Hope he runs in 2016.
Theo, people who believe or push this nonsense for one nanosecond have zero appreciation for Joe Biden’s importance to PBO and even less understanding of the great job has has done and continues to do. I have never seen a more harmonious relationship between a president and VP. PBO would never even contemplated jeopardizing that bond.
Please allow me to bring this to this thread. It is complementary to this post……I hope.
Think Progress has it right.
Why no one should read Mark H. and John H. new book
The authors of “Double Down” — Mark Halperin and John Heilemann — have found a way to exploit this phenomena for fun and profit. They seek out disaffected campaign staffers and consultants and provide an anonymous conduit for them to spin their preferred version of what transpired. This creates a prisoner’s dilemma for those who might not ordinarily be inclined to speak to Halperin and Heilemann. If they don’t cooperate, their critics might be the only people who shape the narrative of the campaign. By playing different factions within campaigns against it each other, Heilemann and Halperin get a lot of folks to talk. Interviews are conducted on “deep background” and the books contain “no source notes.”
This has been an extremely lucrative exercise for the authors. Their first book on the 2008 campaign, “Game Change,” was a bestseller and optioned into an HBO movie. Halperin and Heilemann received an advance for “Double Down” that exceeded $5 million.
Judd Legum is spot on.
Halperin and Heilemann were paid a $5 million dollar advance for Game Change, an unsourced book of gossip.
Everytime I think the MSM echo-chamber couldn’t be more ridiculous, I’m proven wrong.

That 2nd tweet is exactly what the media is doing—-they negatively pound and pound and pound away and then proudly run to the microphones when polls show they have affected the mood of the country. It’s a pretty sick and slick operation. And—- I always think you can make polls reveal whatever you want them to reveal, by the way the questions are phrased and who and where you poll. I am always suspicious.
By Kurt Eichenwald
“Snowden couldn’t have played better into China’s strategy for protecting its cyber activities if he had been doing it on purpose,” one American intelligence official says.
Snowden’s revelations quickly veered away from what he called the NSA’s “domestic surveillance state” to overseas espionage by the United States. After fleeing to Hong Kong, he provided local reporters with NSA documents and told them the United States was hacking major Chinese telecommunications companies, a Beijing university and the corporate owner of the region’s most extensive fiber-optic submarine cable network. That information, government officials and industry experts say, is now used by the Chinese to deflect criticisms of their hacking, both in meetings with the administration and at cyber security conferences.
“….if he had been doing it on purpose” .
I have no doubt it was on purpose…the timing convinces me of that fact. The only question for me is why? Does someone want to continue international strife…you know they are upset the war is ending and that the President didn’t start a conflict with Syria. Is it about President Obama, or both. I maintained from the beginning that Snowden was on a mission and I have not changed my mind.
I agree with you 1001%. But the caveat was added for until the Official can read minds……he/she was reluctant to publicly pronounce a judgement.
I am judging Snowden…..politically.

If Halperin and Heilmann think their nonsense is helping Hillary maybe they should think again.
All the bilge and fuss remind folks of how tired they used to be of anything Clinton.
My personal view, based on nothing but my gut is that Hillary will not run in 2016.
More and more it seems to me that the endless perrpetuation of attention and thereby $$$ is the actual plan.
If you think this is implausible , see Newt Gingrich and Anthony Weiner.
Anybody agree with me?
I used to think she would not run. I thought she was finally tired of all the negative attention and would seek to teach and write a book or become president of a college. But with her recent makeover and increased appearances and visibility, it looks like she may be laying the groundwork and is getting all her loyal peeps so excited about it that it will be difficult to back out. So I don’t know. I have always thought Bill is the driving force, the one who is pushing her, as he is dying to get back in the bright limelight. Personally, I think both she and Joe would be too old to be president, that job is a HUGE ENORMOUS headache, almost too overwhelming to contemplate, that I think it requires the energy and mental acuity of someone younger. I’m hoping someone else catches fire.
‘Personally, I think both she and Joe would be too old to be president, that job is a HUGE ENORMOUS headache, almost too overwhelming to contemplate,’
THIS is exactly how I feel, Dotster, though I like Joe in his current role (these past 5 years). I don’t understand why the country would want to go from a ‘young’ president back to a president from the old guard. One could easily argue that the country needs someone with a 21st C mentally to continue the #FORWARD movement PBO has started.
In addition, do all the people clamouring for Hillary to run remember WHAT she looked like after her stint at SoS? IMO, she looked worn out. She might have had a ‘makeover’ and might LOOK ready to go, but frankly I don’t think she has the stamina for this particular job at this time in *her* life. Plus, IMO, Bill himself doesn’t look sturdy enough to be tossed back into the fray. I do not wish them any ill, but I’d say their health just might not hold up to another round of campaigning and serving, should they win. I say this with no animosity towards those who are ‘old’ – it just seems to me that it’s time they step aside. They have served faithfully, and their efforts have been appreciated, but it’s time to encourage, mentor, give the reins to a ‘new’ generation of leaders.
VC, I agree with you, Dotster and arapaho, that Hillary is simply unfit for the job of US President at this time. The media knows that deep down, and as arapaho indicated, they’re trying to bait her into running, so they will have a campaign season, filled with nonstop scandals, a broken DEM coalition, all of which will most likely result in a GOP Presidency AND Congress.
Today the media was trying to force Jay to say whether or not PBO has endorsed Hillary for 2016. How can PBO endorse someone who has not EVEN said whether or not they’re running. Jay basically told them to take your stupid, irrelevant questions and shove them where the sun don’t shine.
Whenever I see Jay in action I’m torn in two directions. I wish he’d tell them to take a flying leap and go educate themselves about their jobs, and conversely I admire his responses and would be disappointed if he didn’t maintain his professional and intelligent demeanor. Those media people definitely irritate me big time, EVERY DAY!
Hope she doesn’t run.
Media are baiting her because they have so much past history and drama on her, they won’t have to actually work (much like our current Congress) to manufacture a scandal-a-week during her campaign.
Speaking for the 70+ age group…..I LOVE Joe, but for me his age is against him. Hillary is definitely too old to run. A person has the energy to do, even at 60, that which becomes more difficult to do at 70. Energy does lessen, and so does stamina.
I teach 18 year olds, and these people will NOT engage this young demographic. President Obama appears young, and engaged them, but neither of these people will.
We need an experienced, young in ideas person to run. I see no one in the entire Rethug line up who will appeal to the young demographic either, and they will become more and more important in voting.
Hillary’s PUMAS are out of touch with people; they see only their Clinton “glory years” and are not realistic. The press is so status quo they can’t see anything that has not imprinted their eyes for the past one hundred or so years…..give or take a few years. I’m not thinking any one smart is going to make a move until early 2015. That leaves plenty of time before summer 2016.
I agree with your assessment.
Anyone here from NY who knows about Kirsten Gillibrand? She impresses me but I don’t know enough about her on a deeper level. Her name has been thrown out there but she has said she would defer to HRC if she decides to run. That right there gives me pause but I’d like to learn more.
I think back to the 2008 primary campaign with the many lies and the sleazy campaign staff and party supporters of HRC. She helped redeem her reputation during her term as Sec of State. That does not mean I am completely confident in her honesty and forthright behavior. PBO is not the kind of politician we had become used to. He was refreshingly honest and championed the needs of the average American although many believe he is the most dishonest politician ever due to their unquestioning belief in the far right lies.

Great question. i would hope so.
And they accuse this POTUS of abusing his authority?
Alabama style JUSTICE ? Sheesh.
There seems to be at least one in every state. A local with a blog and an aggressive interest in state politics and muck. Publishing what the local papers wouldn’t touch. Walking the line between rumor and news. Conversant with the key issues, and familiar with the key names. Unafraid or indifferent to pissing people off.
In Alabama, Roger Shuler is one of those guys. And as a result of an ongoing fight about what he’s written on his blog, Shuler is currently in jail.
Shuler was arrested last week in his Birmingham home and is being held without bail in a Shelby County, Ala. jail for contempt of court and resisting arrest.
The charges stem from a case brought by Rob Riley, a Birmingham attorney and the son of former Gov. Bob Riley (R). Over the past 11 months, Shuler has written blog posts asserting that Riley had an affair with an Alabama lobbyist. Riley has denied the story, and tried to take Shuler to court. Shuler wouldn’t cooperate. And he continued to write about the alleged affair, violating a court order in the process.
He’s tempting fate in that hellhole. They put former Gov. Siegelman in prison and threw away the key.
The D.C. Press Yawns While Republicans Return To Radically Obstructionist Ways
By ERIC BOEHLERT
Republicans in the U.S. Senate made history this week when they successfully filibustered the nomination of Rep. Melvin Watt (R-N.C.) to become director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency. Watt received 56 Senate votes, four short of the 60 necessary to end the filibuster.
The move represented the latest round of raw, extremist obstructionism that Republicans have proudly practiced for the last five years, particularly when it comes to mounting extraordinary efforts to block presidential appointments that in the past were considered to be routine.
The historic element of the Watt rejection was that throughout American history it has been virtually unheard for a sitting member of Congress to be filibustered — to be denied the courtesy of a final vote — when selected by the president to fill an administration position. Prior to this week’s partisan blockade of Watt, a Congressional rejection like his hadn’t happened since before the Civil War, in 1843.
I don’t know why the Republicans stop at filibustering. Why don’t they just walk across the aisle and slap the sh** out of the Democrats. Maybe they’ll wake up!!

Jason at HP is any OK blogger……Not always…..He has it right on William Daley
I suspect, in fact, that Daley was probably the only vocal exponent of the idea, since Daley is the only name you need to have on hand to qualify for “top echelon” and you can have both a “furtive” and “oblique” discussion involving one guy with an idiotic idea and a bunch of people telling him, furtively and obliquely, that he’s an idiot. For what it’s worth, the rest of the “top echelon” are laughing out loud at the idea on
Quotes in the same post attributed to Bill Daley
“Not for a moment was there a serious discussion or a belief that Joe Biden should be replaced, period,” said Daley, a CBS contributor.
Like Carney said, Daley admitted that it was something he considered and that polling and research were done to explore the possibility because it was his job to “look outside the box.”
“But in 2011,” Daley said, “it was a very difficult political year, and so my sense was we ought to look at everything here because this is a very — it was a very difficult period, politically.”
PENNSVILLE, N.J. (AP) — The young man believed to have carried out a shooting at Los Angeles International Airport had sent a sibling a text message mentioning suicide, leading their father to seek authorities’ help in finding him, a New Jersey police chief said Friday.
Paul Ciancia’s father called Pennsville Police Chief Allen Cummings early Friday afternoon saying another of his children had received a text message from the 23-year-old “in reference to him taking his own life,” the chief told The Associated Press.
The elder Ciancia asked for help in locating Paul, Cummings said. The chief called Los Angeles police, which sent a patrol car to Ciancia’s apartment. It wasn’t clear whether the police visited before or after the airport shooting.
“Basically, there were two roommates there” Cummings said. “They said, ‘We saw him yesterday and he was fine.’”

America has never faced the existential threat posed by the Koch brothers and their acolytes in Congress and state legislatures, and it is likely there has never been a concerted effort to destroy the government that America faces today. It is true that Cruz does not have the people behind him like he thinks, but with the Koch brothers’ dirty money and Republican-controlled states restricting the right to vote, Cruz’s lack of popular support is not a guarantee his “multi-stage extended battle to abolish the IRS” will fail. If nothing else, Cruz has revealed that, like the Koch brothers and Grover Norquist, his goal is destroying the government by defunding it and it cements his place in America’s libertarian axis of evil that makes him a legitimate enemy of the state and the people who own it….

For weeks I’ve been wondering why no one is talking about how Republicans sabotaged the ACA rollout by refusing to implement state run marketplaces, and thus unexpectedly forcing all of that additional burden on to the federal website.
It reminded me of Republicans denying security funding for Benghazi and then blaming Obama and Clinton for the lack of security in Benghazi. The media were oddly uninterested in that alarming fact

If the Bill Clinton dog joke about PBO is half true, I’m completely grossed out. I’m not a prude, but this is just a very crass thing to say about POTUS. UGH, Bill Clinton disgusts me.
He did what???? Oh please …..
Bobfr, I don’t even want to repeat it. It’s from Halperin’s book, so who knows but it’s VERY disrespectful.
Thank you for not repeating it, and since I’ll never read anything that scum Halperin writes I’ll be spared yet another Clinton ugly.
The fact that President Obama does not seem to enjoy Bill Clinton’s company makes me love him even more. Bill is just gross.
The mayor of Knoxville, Madeline Rogero (D) was appointed to the President’s new climate change council. Yea!!! We are very proud of her. By working with a lot of Republican’s, including Gov. Haslam when he was mayor, she has had a big impact on “greening” Knoxville. She ran against Haslam for mayor few years ago. He won, then appointed her to an important position in his administration. They had a good relationship. She also has a good working relationship with our county mayor who is, of course, a Republlican.
The working poor, among others:

and just in time for the holidays. i swear, every time i think the rethugs have bottomed out, they go lower.
I don’t have the capacity to understand it. The holidays are supposed to be a season of giving but really every day hard working Americans struggle to put food on the table. There are no words.
Time for an evening break, eh.
Two women friends had gone for a girl’s night out. Both were very faithful and loving wives, however they had gotten over- enthusiastic on the Bacardi Breezers.
Incredibly drunk and walking home they needed to pee, so they
stopped in the cemetery.
One of them had nothing to wipe with so she thought she would
take off her panties and use them.
Her friend however was wearing a rather expensive pair of panties and did not want to ruin them.
She was lucky enough to squat down next to a grave that had a
wreath with a ribbon on it, so she proceeded to wipe with that.
After the girls did their business they went home.
The next day one of the woman’s husband was concerned that his normally sweet and innocent wife was still in bed hung
over, so he phoned the other husband and said:
” These girl nights have got to stop! I’m starting to suspect the worst.
My wife came home with no panties!!’
That’s nothing’ said the other husband, ‘Mine came back with a card stuck to her ass that said…..
‘From all of us at the Fire Station.
We’ll never forget you.’
: ) I am sending this to a friend of mine. We did several road trips together and whenever I said I have to pee so stop at the next gas station. After driving past several gas stations I noted he never stopped so when It got so I could no longer wait he had to pull over and I had to squat in the bushes. One time after I told him and we were miles from a town he pulled over and I had to go next to the car. We had a four door SUV so we opened the back door and passenger door to shield me while I took care of business, well once I was through he closed the back door before I was done and as a car was coming around while I was partially exposed. We laugh about that all the time and I give him grief for it. But since that day whenever I say I gotta go….he pulls into the first restaurant, gas station, or rest stop.
Sounds like you take a lot of road trips.
