Good Morning Chipsticks, AMK, Sonji, … TOD Early Birds!!!

So Chipsticks, Danny’s hedgehog lasted a couple of days. That’s pretty good.

For me it became a game of sorts to find a toy that would last for more than a few days. Then my family would make predictions as to how long the new toy would last.

When a dog is determined enough, no toy is indestructible.

The more we learn about Nelson Mandela, the more remarkable, prescient and courageous he seems.

And GWB is going to his funeral??

        December 7, 2013 at 8:26 am

Evening, 99ts! That was my first thought when I read the tweet. Remorse? I doubt that. Probably trying to finesse history – you know ‘Mandela slapped his wrist, but Georgie Boy didn’t hold any hard feelings. After all he was one of three American presidents who attended his funeral. Georgie Boy was so statesmanlike. Yada yada yada.’

          December 7, 2013 at 8:36 am

Probably needs to go on AF1, so he can escape if anyone tries to arrest him for war crimes – only chance to leave the US for a short while.

      • December 7, 2013 at 8:29 am

At the time, he was probably giving credence to Mr. Mandela’s words by showing his arrogance, and treating countries that criticized his actions as a nonentities, and therefore discounting their objections.

        • 35 99ts
          December 7, 2013 at 8:41 am

He discounted everyone’s objections – as did Tony Blair (& our PM which was somewhat irrelevant given our size). I will never know why Blair sided with Bush – both probably thought nothing of what Nelson Mandela had to say – so I still do not understand why either would go to the funeral.

          • December 7, 2013 at 8:52 am

In which case, agree with VC….hoping his current actions will overshadow past actions…attempt to change how history shows him as a person and as a president.

I’m sure you are right – and also, he doesn’t see himself as so many see him – I just find it weird.

Good morning all. I am off to another church bazaar, the area’s best cookie walk (to load up on holiday treats for visitors) and an outdoor Christkindl market that is an updated version of an historical Christmas event in this area. Have a great day. Wish I could share the cookie treats with everyone. There are dozens and dozens of varieties, all of them beautifully baked and decorated. The national tree is up, decorated and lighted and so is mine. It’s been an incredible week and my heart goes out to the courageous Ukrainians who are struggling to free their country from Russian control. Praying for their safety today as they gather in Kiev.

I wonder if you all realize it’s SATURDAY?????? Are you all insomniacs (like me), or do you simply hate sleep?

We-ell, since you all are here already – HAVE A SCRUMPTIOUS SATURDAY!!
Yes, food is on my mind because instead of going downstairs and having something to eat, I washed my face, got dressed, tidied my desk, AND quit stalling to turn on my laptop. Just to see who was insane enough to be signed on, of course. Go figure, most of the regular TOD wackos are on site, plus a few more.

Egypt’s interior ministry says it will no longer allow visits to Mohammed Morsi, who has been detained since being deposed as president in July.

Ministry spokesman Col Gamal Mokhtar said Mr Morsi had delivered messages “inciting violence” to a team of lawyers after a meeting in November.

On Thursday, one of Mr Morsi’s sons revealed his most recent request to visit his father had been turned down.

Osama Morsi also said he had been moved from Alexandria’s Burj al-Arab prison.

Think it’s interesting that PBO invited the Bushes to accompany him and Michelle to Mandela’s funeral, and not the Clintons. Maybe PBO did not want to listen to Bill pontificate during the long flight. It must be true, as reported, that PBO can only take BC in small doses, and that flight would be a long dose. And PBO tends to reward and encourage good behavior, appreciative that W has kept his trap shut. And maybe he’s providing cover for W, as Mandela was not a fan, said he was unable to think clearly re. Iraq War, an opinion shared with the world. Whatever, PBO has more grace and largess in his heart than most mortals and may be putting into practice forgiveness, as Mandela taught.

Have the billarys freaked out yet? But then, who cares?

      • 170 carolyn
        December 7, 2013 at 9:21 am

I have a feeling PBO invited all former presidents. That’s who he is. GWB would be the one to accept, desperate to be legitimized. WJC would not be able to be second to PBO…..even riding on Air Force One. I’ve “heard” he’s going on his own, but haven’t heard if Hill is going. As a former SOS, I’m thinking she might want to go. Bill can afford his own luxury flight.

        • 171 hopefruit2
          December 7, 2013 at 9:25 am

I’m thinking along the same lines as you carolyn. I suspect very much that all living former US Presidents and their spouses were invited by PBO, but Clinton declined to travel *with* PBO for egotistical reasons as you indicated. Meanwhile, GWB gladly accepted because he needs an image boost AND he probably feels obligated seeing that he didn’t attend PBO’s 2nd inauguration.

        • 172 vcprezofan2
          December 7, 2013 at 9:39 am

This is how I see it too, Carolyn, given my perception of PBO’s leadership character.

    • 174 Don
      December 7, 2013 at 9:11 am

dotster, I was thinking that exact same thing. There was no way that President Obama could sit and listen to Clinton pontificate on that long flight to South Africa. Though President Obama has shown that he has the patience of Job, but Clinton can at times try any man’s soul.

    • 175 hopefruit2
      December 7, 2013 at 9:22 am

How do we know that he didn’t invite the Clintons? He probably invited all past living presidents and their spouses. I can’t imagine that he would invite GWB and no one else (including Carter). That would make him seem petty and superficial – especially considering the event they’re going to be attending.

      • 176 dotster3
        December 7, 2013 at 9:30 am

OH my—-not accusing PBO of being petty—-nothing could be further from the truth. Just noting an interesting—to me— news tidbit.

        • 177 hopefruit2
          December 7, 2013 at 9:34 am

No dotster…not saying that YOU are accusing him of being petty.

I’m suggesting that the media is not reporting accurately and it’s very likely that PBO did invite them all but Clinton may have declined for his own reasons. My assessment that his not inviting them would seem petty is not a criticism of you or what you said, but just a general explanation of why I feel that the media reports so far are not accurate.

        • 178 carolyn
          December 7, 2013 at 9:36 am

I’m sure PBO invited them all. That’s who he is.
And…… one thing GWB did was work to provide money for AIDS recovery in So. Africa. That was the one good thing he did…..and the money he got provided ( forget how) started S.A’s recovery…..at one time it was the country with the highest number and percentage of AIDS victims. Laura has also established a foundation for women and girls in So.Africa. Remember when PBO and Michelle went to So. Africa last spring, Michelle met with other presidents’ wives at Laura’s foundation.

Anyone who know this President knows it is not like President Obama to just invite GW Bush and not Bill Clinton or Jimmy Carter. That is why I believe he invited them all. They have a choice to join him on AF=1 or not. Airforce 1 is a big plane and the President does not have to listen to Bill Clinton all the way to South Africa. The President have private area on that plane meant for no one but him and his family.

This nonsense about President Obama’s speech on inequality being a pivot just makes my blood boil. All of a sudden PBO is supposedly following Elizabeth Warren’s populist narrative. Give me a break. Where has Steve Kornacki been for the last five years. The one thing we can say about President Obama is that he is relentlessly consistent and pragmatic. There was no freaking pivot. I hope Kornacki gets hammered for this crap.

When someone asks you if a victim of rape should be compelled by the state to carry a resulting pregnancy to term, it is not a gaffe if you reply that this hypothetical almost never happens because women’s bodies have a way of preventing conception when they are under stress. It’s also not a gaffe to reply that, while it is certainly unfortunate that rape babies are occasionally produced, it’s all part of God’s plan and clearly God wants that baby to come into the world. These responses are not gaffes because they are actually honest responses that reflect what Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock, respectively, actually believe.

They can be “tutored” all they want, but the fact is, THIS IS THE WAY THEY REALLY THINK! It won’t matter a tinker’s damn….it is not genuine. The same can be said about immigrants, or poor people, or the elderly or workers. They can’t hide their contempt. I hope they get their clocks cleaned.
