MoooOOOooorning Early Birds, Happy Monday!
GM 99ts and Chips. Happy Monday. I am still all snuggled in a nice warm bed. I don’t want to get up to start the day.
gm mtmarilyn – sounds very chilly in your world – I’m soon to go to bed and snuggle in.
Ms Chips is a hard act to follow – anyone would think she started this blog or something
What can I say – life wasn’t meant to be fair – to repeat a RW Prime Minister of times past
Mooooorning 99ts, our true moral winner!
BREAKING: Have just spotted Marilyn, so you’re actually only the runner-up
You are always the “winner” Chips.
Um – no – but I’m happy to share with Marilyn – she plays fair in this event of events
At least you didn’t claim “morally” first too.
That should be reserved exclusively for Bill R. considering his post in the previous thread (at least through 2013), IMHO.
Good morning. It’s still very cold in MT -5 right now.
We’re at a sultry 24 F,, marilyn. Will send you unused bearskins.
Thanks we can use them. It’s suppose to get up to 32 by Thursday.
Yipes! Will add chicken soup and hot cocoa!
THE SYMBOL OF EVERYTHING THAT IS GOOD ABOUT HUMANITY
How Nelson Mandela used sport to transform South Africa’s image
The picture of him presenting the World Cup to Francois Pienaar, wearing the Springboks jersey, remains one of the most enduring images from his presidency. It’s hard to believe now but at the time the green and gold shirt was still deeply associated with the racial struggle in South Africa.
Mandela defied his advisers to wear it, knowing in an instant how the gesture could do more for harmony and equality than years of talks.
And yet after meeting him in the dressing room before the final and that presentation on the pitch at Ellis Park, Pienaar described him as the “symbol of everything that is good about humanity.”
That was such an important event! His insight was so inspiring.
I saw his interview with Oprah last night and for sure he is the “symbol of everything that is good about humanity.”
I saw a wonderful interview this morning of Francois Pienaar by presenter George Alagiah (BBC). Francois discussed what happened that day when Nelson Mandela wore the jersey. It was a very moving discussion. In fact, at one point, he was overcome with emotion.
Happy Monday, TODers, Chips!!!
Good morning to all you fab folks! Each and every one of you is a treasure and Cap’n Chips runs a wonderful ship. I would have lost my tiny little mind years ago without this sanctuary. I will be forever grateful.
Barack Obama is still President and the world is a better place for it.
Back to lurking.
Yay Lynn! I agree completely! Good Morning!
Good morning to you, too, Dudette! You have no idea how much I appreciate all your efforts…especially late at night. You make insomnia a pleasure! May all good things come to you this day and every day!
Aw! Thanks Lynn. You make my heart sing!

Good Morning TOD and congrats on 1st Chips
The weather outside (here in the DC area) is frightful so safe flight Mr. President and all of the delegation going to SA.
Morning Donna. Everything in our area is literally impassable at the moment–covered in ice and more freezing rain expected. Everything is delayed. Heard that the President and Mrs. Obama are motorcading to AF1 because Marine 1 can’t take off in this weather.
I see NBC is out with A Big Concern headline today——”Will Obamacare fiasco doom Democrats in the midterms?” Is that “political director” Chuck Todd’s handiwork? NBC has become laughable. Desperation squared.
Dotster, that’s simply absurd and the more extreme they get, the more people will start to laugh at them. They are now, quite literally, doing public relations and advertising for the GOP, trying to “engineer” election results through pure dishonesty.
Kind of like when know it all Chuck Todd said that the supporters of President Obama wasn’t as excited to get out and support our President like the Republicans were to get out and support their candidate. I think we proved Todd to be a liar, and we will prove NBC to be a liar also.
I heard the same theme on NPR this morning. Sometimes I think they all just are clones of one another.

Morning everyone! Happy Monday….. congrats to Chips and 99 Congrats to mtmarilyn for having the good sense to stay in her cozy bed rather than get up! Trust me, I WANTED to stay in bed,but it’s not -4 outside MY door! Should be quite the week this week…all eyes on TOD.
Hope you have a great day DF. It is going to be a great week with all the celebrations for Mandela. It is wonderful to share here at TOD.
GM df – As usual TOD will be the website to follow events in South Africa – although the US media will no doubt talk about Mandela – anyone other than their President.
Much as I do not enjoy our hot summers – I could not handle a below zero temperature – not in my mindset. Hope your day is a good one.

Obamas To Depart For Mandela Funeral Today talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/obama…— Doc Hamrick (@mch7576) December 09, 2013
Mooooorning again early birds, I just read at TPM that the Obamas are “expected to depart at 8:20 a.m. ET” for South Africa, keep an eye here:
Saw that a larger than usual press contingent gathered, likely because of the Obama/Bush thing, looking to see if they can report PBO pinched or shoved W as they boarded AF1, or similar.
I can never understand why they go – they never report on anything that happens and mainly complain about the weather, the locals, their accommodation, the food or whatever.
I’m hoping there’s a rendition team from The Hague waiting to snatch the Shrub right before he tries to come back home.
Ooooooh – He would probably only travel outside of the US on AF1 – not sure why he wanted to go – change of scenery?
And don’t forget Ted Cruz is going, too. I’m sure they’re hoping for fireworks.
Have a great day everyone!

Have I said that I love this man yet today? He sent them a video….
I love him too.
Thanks! I should have done that
I got your back!
It’s a great video. Thanks for sharing it.
Now that is a lovely message to hear at the start of the day.
Well up and at ‘em all you O’s!! What a great getting up day again in the TOD circle!!!!!
Oh the weather outside is frightful.
My bones and joints aren’t spriteful.
and since it’s gotten so dang cold;
I feel old, I feel old, I feel old!!
It’s been arctic here and then yesterday, it decided to snow about 3-4″. I hadn’t even finished the outside decorations. Oh well, Rudolph will just have to lead Santa without the sleigh this year. The entryway flower pot on the porch will greet visitors without any festive decoration. Oh well, perhaps next year……sigh
Great toon. http://bobcesca.thedailybanter.com/blog-archives/2013/12/nelson-mandela.html

Phew! Thank you!!!! I just caught them as the got to the top of the stairs and turned to wave!
I covet FLOTUS’ coat.
That sistah can WEAR a good coat, can’t she? I guess coming from Chi-town though, it’s a given that she’d know how to pick ‘em well.
OMG, she has so many amazing coats. Real, gorgeous, honest-to-goodness coats!
I’d be happy to take any of them as hand-me-downs!
Dudette, I’d be happy to take the “style,” but at 5’1, I would look laughable in anything Michelle has. Half of any length would have to be cut off or it would be a game of “there’s jackie?”.
Who said I’d wear ‘em? Heck, I’d set up a shrine for them.

I missed them too. Watched the take-off though.
It sort of made me shudder that the plane disappeared into the fog almost as soon as the wheels were up.

Wow, that plane took off and then the fog is so thick it was almost immediately out of sight.
Yes. I don’t like that. AT ALL.
Eeegads, it’s a 17 hour flight.
On the plane with GWB for 17 hours. My mind reels.
The President has private quarters on AF1. The Bushies will be in the cheap seats.
The president will have work to do in his onboard office, the First Lady will play hostess for a bit and then go about her own business. They will sleep at night, so it isn’t as if they have to be face to face all the time.
They’re already way up over the clouds by now. It’ll be smooth sailing all the way there.
and they’re off… honestly am not terribly thrilled about our President flying in this weather at all.

You will not BELIEVE the vulgar responses to this. I can’t!
Dudette, I can believe it since very little about human beings has changed in 2000 some years. We may celebrate Christmas, but who really even hears the part about “good will to all.” And we all know what happened to Jesus. The pope is undertaking the hardest job in the world right now–awakening some positive part of our basic humanity. People will reject anything that makes them feel less than justified in their prejudices and hard-heartedness.

This article says, and as we here at TOD had suspected, “Only former U.S. presidents, their spouses and some current and former Obama administration officials and aides were invited to travel with the president as of the eve of his departure, the official said.”
Yet the media (e.g., Mark Knoller et al) initially tried to make it seem like PBO hand-picked GWB to travel with him and no one else. See how the media disinforms?
