Chat On, Night Owls

A man holds the official programme ahead of the memorial service for Nelson Mandela at the FNB Stadium in Soweto

****

Just want to thank UT again for her completely wonderful posts on the Nelson Mandela Memorial Service this morning, utterly unrivaled anywhere. By 10:0 EST there were 30,000 hits on the blog, all to see UT’s work. That’s amazing. Thank you legend, even if you’re a Blue

And that’s with two hours to go before Wednesday, legend! Honestly UT, your posts were a joy, and I know how much work you put in to them, while doing live updates on Twitter. You’re an amazing gal.

      AMAZING!

You did an awesome job with the Nelson Mandela coverage, UT. Thank you so much – and for all you do to support Chips, who held this blog together for so many years with her own two blessed hands. And you both do it out of love. Both of your enormously generous efforts are so very much appreciated!

I’ve been meaning to share this little tidbit. Last week I got an email from healthcare.gov to tell me to proceed to a selection of coverage. Some of you may recall I checked it out that first week or so and had a bunch of problems with it. I eventually was able to look at plans (this was back when you had to create an account, etc to look at them) and decided my current work coverage was equal to or slightly better than what was available through the Exchange.

In any event, I was pretty pumped that they contacted me via email this week. It was very specific so I knew i got the email because I had been on the website in the early goings. Glad that they are following up with people this way.

isn’t it also nice to know you have a choice? And if you ever have to get coverage on your own, you have plenty of options. This is the “freedom” that Americans should be celebrating, not some nonsense freedom from the right wingers that makes nobody free. Thanks for the update – this is good news!

Have commented once today on ‘hand shakes’ and decided to comment one more time ….

Lawrence did a good job on that handshake tonight….had David Corn and Steve Clemons talking about it…agreed the press was silly….and also our treatment of Cuba has been detrimental. Hoping for a thaw in relations, and alleviation of abuses on Cuba’s part. The handshake made anyone sensible pleased.
Then, Lawrence said “now that we’ve got the silly stuff out of the way…..we’ll go to the reason the President flew 16 hours to So. Africa, to deliver the speech at Mandela’s memorial.” After that he played about a 7 minute section of his actual speech, no commentary, beginning with as he said “the overwhelming ovation the President got at the beginning.”….and I noticed they didn’t quiet until he was into the speech. So, Lawrence shut up and let the President speak.

Great coverage UT – and wonderful site Chips – links to you everywhere – only place to see the US news

More and more protestors coming to the maidan …. an amazing site to watch what is an epic struggle ….

…. between agents of the oppressor and those who will not be denied their freedom ….

  10. December 10, 2013 at 10:22 pm

I need someone to ‘talk me down’. I am thoroughly pissed right now at the Democrats for allowing the GOP to remove funds to cover 1.3 million who need unemployment insurance.

A toast (since I have a Manhattan in my hand):

To Chips, for creating this space for us.

To UT, for coming in and taking a load off of Chips’ shoulders. (Seriously, when do you sleep/study/canoodle?)

To all the BT’s (yes I know, that includes me) for the contributions they give.

To all the commenters, without whom this place would whither and die.

    Prost!

  14. December 10, 2013 at 10:38 pm

These Ukraine protestors’ resolve & peaceful resistance to violence by the State is truly remarkable. More and more are arriving at the maidan & that number is likely to increase considerably in the next few hours.

Change – the one thing that’s constant.

Russia is finally realizing they can’t stop the power of people demanding that they be heard and a secure future guaranteed for them and future generations.

      True democracy in action.

      • December 10, 2013 at 10:48 pm

        Yes, UT.

The irony is that these Ukrainians may actually be liberating Russians, UT.

The amazing restraint of the protestors is a very powerful statement of resolve and no one yearning for freedom will fail to recognize.

Love the way Lady Ashton has chastised the government for acting, in the night, in such a cowardly way.

Putin is going to learn that bullying doesn’t work anymore. Granted, the situation in Ukraine may be difficult to resolve, because there is a significant russian minority there.

But declaring protests illegal ain’t going to resolve anything.

Putin has this fantasy of rebuilding the Russian empire. He will have to understand that in this day and age, you have to CONVINCE people to support you. You can’t FORCE them to.

    • December 10, 2013 at 10:43 pm

I don’t think this is going to turn out quite the way Yanukovych hoped. The Russian Army won’t be rolling in to help. And I don’ think he has the stomach for mass bloodshed.

Thanks! I got some Dem troll on Twitter trying to tell me that since he wasn’t in Congress and didn’t “write” the bill that he isn’t a party to it. Oh because he was only the LABOR SECRETARY. Good God.

Unreal. Clintonistas. Didn’t Reich run all over Hillary to support Barack Obama in the ’08 election? Maybe he’s another one who got insulted that he wasn’t rewarded with another high-ranking position by President Obama (I’m recalling how a few others “turned” on PBO when that happened to them).

Never posted here before but I LOVE this site! Especially being a Democrat in Utah, I need some sane people other than my family! After all the

media made up crap today, there is this great picture of the POTUS and FLOTUS that I hadn’t seen yet.

        Truly welcome, loh918!
        The more the merrier.

Thank you for that picture of POTUS and FLOTUS.
The whore media would never show how much this loving couple cares for each other. That is why they want to take their own pics to show other wise. Your life will be so much calmer here. Enjoy and feel free to delurk at anytime to express how you feel. I do no watch any MSM and chose very carefully what I read and listen to. Your family may not ever see things your way, but that’s okay. They will see how peaceful you will be and just like PBO, you will be able to “brush things off your shoulder and come here at night to relax to music, poetry, jokes, opinions: pros and cons. And finally, have SWEET SLEEP!
        Welcome!
