Unfortunately Dems will be blamed for not getting it done either. There’s only so much that can be done without willing partnership (or even just opposition that won’t sabotage everything), but people won’t rationalize that way. They’ll just see gridlock and inaction and blame everybody in the building.

Dems will not be blamed. That’s the same mistake the GOP made with the shutdown in October. This is not 2010 when people just bought what the corporate media and emoprogs fed to them hook line and sinker.

People are more attuned and know what’s up. And even the media-manufactured polls no longer accurately capture public attitudes.

Sorry, the cynic who lives on an island surrounded by an ocean of Georgia red-necks poked me inside my head for a sec. I’m hopeful that, as you say, people are more attuned and know what’s up. There’s lots of time between now and the next election and lots of work to be done. I’m in.

I think many have stopped believing “both sides do it” and despite the best efforts of the media the blame will go where it belongs. The sad reality is that the GOP thinks starvation will create jobs – and they dare to talk about a white Jesus and the real meaning of Christmas.

GM from my world – I just fininshed reading LL’s post – one or two back – catching up is hard – and it seems the stupid of the US media is performing better than usual. My understanding of the latest events of importance to the political media

    1. Santa Claus is real and white – as is his bff Jesus

    2. The memorial for Nelson Mandela, which many media people attended – consisted of a handshake, a female Prime Minister wanting a picture of herself with PBO (memories of my PM Gillard) and a signer who couldn’t sign

    3. The WHPC, in particular Ed Henry, convinced that the world is on the point of collapse because they can’t take pictures of the President night and day, 7 days per week.

In any country other than the USA, Megyn Kelly would no longer be employed or employable. In any country other than the US, President Obama would be seen as the nation’s hero. In any country other than the US, the President/PM would disband the WHPC.

Your media does not tell truth – your media does not deserve the 1st amendment.

I’m so glad I watched the Mandela memorial live – my eyes see what the pundit eyes do not see. Problem with the US media is that many worldwide outlets copy their tripe and I see it in my media. Usually only relates to news about PBO. The rants of Megyn Kelly are not reported here.

99ts, our media has become no better than tabloid media, they are just as worst. There used to be a difference between the two, but not anymore. President Obama is a down to earth friendly human being, he gets along with most if not all of the world leaders.

99ts, you summed it all up nicely. Somewhere along the line, the US media went off the tracks and wondered into an alternative universe where external reality doesn’t exist anymore, but gigantic paychecks for pseudo “news” people do. Give them enough money and our media will make up any reality their paymasters want them to.

Got clued in to the new Twitter rules. Seems like when companies go public, they turn around and screw the people who made their product popular.

If you block someone, it basically does nothing. You won’t see them in your mentions but they can retweet you and follow you back and even though you won’t see their tweets in your @/Connect section, when they RT you, that’s inviting and inciting their band of nut jobs to harass you/

Twitter says you can make your account private and then block them and that will force them to unfollow you but as soon as your account becomes public again, they can re-follow you. This is insane. People block users for a variety of reasons such as stalking, harassment, racial slurs, etc. and Twitter just made the day of nut jobs.

” Seems like when companies go public, they turn around and screw the people who made their product popular. ”

How true is that UT. People who buy and control social media sites should well remember those that have gone – and disappeared – before them. There will always be a new “bright young thing” who will devise a new format for those who are not liking what is happening to the current media.

  12. 51 utaustinliberal
    December 12, 2013 at 6:52 pm

    {snip}

Twitter has redefined the word “blocked.” Traditionally, to “block someone” on social media is to cut all digital ties. You no longer see their activity and they no longer see yours. However, that’s always been tricky on Twitter because so much of what is published there is public. Even if you were blocked by a fellow user, you could still see their tweets if their account wasn’t a private one. Twitter has decided to cease the farce of “the block” for public accounts.

From now on, a blocked user can still follow, retweet, and favorite a public user who blocked them, and won’t be informed, as they have in the past, that they’ve been blocked. The blocker though won’t see the RTing, faving, or any mentions by that person show up in their notification stream, and won’t see them in their follower list. Blocking someone on Twitter now actually means you’re just muting them. It’s the digital equivalent of plugging your ears; they can shout but you won’t hear them.

Okay, I’m gonna just need to talk myself down. Y’all have probably been over this earlier today so forgive me, but I’m just reading this article about the fake interpreter. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2013/12/12/mandela-sign-language-interpreter-thamsanqa-jantjie/3995875/

I had heard a little about the guy being fake on the radio this morning and just chalked it up to somebody with connections getting into the event and playing a prank. I even remember when watching the SABC live feed of the memorial and noticing that there was a 2nd sign language interpreter (a woman) on screen and thinking “wow, they’ve covering all the bases, a sign interpreter for the TV audience and one for the stadium.” [Didn't even notice that they weren't signing the same thing]

But I hadn’t heard about this aspect of the story (if this article is to be believed): The guy is a schizophrenic who, according to the article “…told the AP he has been violent and was hospitalized in a mental health facility for more than a year.” They put THAT guy inches away from my President?!! WTH!

So everything turned out to be fine, my President is protected by the finest security force on the planet, but DAMN! Someone should answer for that. Seriously.

Here’s the WH’s response to the sign language interpreter story – which, by the way yields 735,000,000,000 hits on Google.

    YAWN…

    WH spokesperson Josh Earnest:
“It’s a shame that … a service that was dedicated to honoring the life and celebrating the legacy of one of the great leaders of the 20th century has gotten distracted by this and a couple of other issues that are far less important than the legacy of Nelson Mandela,” he told reporters on Wednesday. ”

    WH Press Secretary, Jay Carney:
“President Obama was “not concerned” at any point during the trip.”

    Secret Service Spokesperson Ed Donovan:
“agreed-upon security measures between the U.S. Secret Service and South African government security officials were in place” during the service.”

The media is overly preoccupied with this story because it’s another sensational distraction from the REAL events at the Mandela Memorial. And don’t think that certain anti-Mandela, pro-Apartheid institutions in SA are not partly behind this…That’s all I will say for now.

They’re right of course. At the end of the day, this incident should not take away from the enormity of the event.
And the fact that nothing happened most certainly makes it even more of a blip comparatively-speaking.

However, unlike the silliness of the reactions to the handshake and “self-gate”, this was in fact a serious lapse in security on the part of the people who booked this man and mentioning/reporting it as such is not unwarranted. It should at the very least serve as a lesson-learned for the people involved in the logistics and security surrounding world leaders, particularly our President. For me it’s a chilling reminder of just how difficult it is to eliminate all potential threats, even more so when you have to assume a level of competency among partners.

Admittedly, I don’t know much about SA politics, but it stretches my imagination to think some anti-Mandela operatives would have concocted a scheme to purposefully place a schizophrenic sign interpreter on the stage as way to undermine the event. More likely somebody’s been getting away with contract fraud and it caught up with them. But then again, a lot strange things happen in this world.

      • 91 hopefruit2
        December 12, 2013 at 9:16 pm

The purpose of the excessive reporting is not borne out of concern for security logistics or for PBO’s safety. It’s about instilling fear and suspicion in people’s minds, and to forever tarnish the Mandela Memorial by associating it with something very unpleasant. The US media simply will not let go of this story – the same media that happily looks the other way when the NRA and RW militia push daily messages of anger, violence and revenge. So their concern trolling is duly noted, but I will not be manipulated by the US media into not enjoying or having good memories of an event designed to memorialize a great leader.

So why does anyone complain about government when we have the wonders of free enterprise systems. My gripes today

HuffPo – who would have guessed. So I followed a link from an earlier thread & thought to leave a comment. Cannot comment any more unless I verify with a facebook account. I do have a facebook account which I use to play scrabble with my cousin. It bears no relationship to me, has no friends and no posts – so how would that verify anyone. I no longer comment at HuffPo & it seems from the numbers about 90% of people that used to comment have given it up. Guess that is a good thing – like twitter kicking themselves to oblivion.

Amazon – so I wanted some books for Christmas gifts. Couldn’t find them anywhere in my world (on or off line). Parcel Postage US to Australia is EXPENSIVE – so when I selected the cheapest rate – oh no – that won’t be here before Christmas – and I stupidly believed them – and doubled the postage cost for a parcel that would be delivered between 18-24th December. So it arrived today – 13th December – and no doubt the cheap rate parcel would have arrived well before Christmas.

I gave up on actively participating/commenting on HuffPo before I even discovered TOD. Too much trollage and Faux-like reporting there for me. Although I do pick up the occasional article here and there upon recommendations.

Like you, I’ve been bitten by the “pay extra for postage” racket[. [Sigh!] Everything’s a battle these days, isn’t it?. You just gotta fight the battles that matter the most and let the other stuff roll of your shoulders. At least you got your order in time. Hopefully those books will make someone very happy. Merry Christmas.

Too true Dudette – I wanted the books for Christmas – now I think I’m crazy complaining because they came too early! Sigh – time is moving on & I still haven’t learned from the example of PBO & Mandela!

Ran into the same problem at HP, 99ts. It’s the only other site i posted on with any frequency. I was ‘gsmp’ over there. It’s a shame.

      Sorry about your shipping problem.

I had a few “friends” over there from way back – will miss a couple of “chats” – I was “Trisha11″

Shipping is my first world problem – so I lost $15 – that I would rather give to someone other than Amazon!

Postage North America (incl Canada) to Australia is weird. I can get a package from the UK to here in 4-5 days – takes 2-4 weeks from US without using the super fast payment rates.
