A man waves a South African flag as he looks out toward the grave of former South African President Nelson Mandela in Qunu, December 15

Mourners watch a broadcast of the state funeral of Nelson Mandela at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg
Good morning everyone. Sweet peace, Madiba
Morning DF, morning everyone.
Morning, Chips. As usual, I missed everything important last night.
Missed most of it too DF, will try to catch up today. Have a perfect Sunday!
Me, too. Feeling a bit guilty that I missed the funeral of someone who had such great importance to his country and the world. Will try to catch up today. That said, viewing a funeral or not, I think the better tribute and way to honor this man and his legacy is for all of us to continue doing his good work, where ever we live. That will be the Mandela Legacy that lives on in all of us.
Beautifully said DF, that’s *the* legacy he would want.
It was on early evening in my world df – it would have been 2-4am or thereabouts in the US. The great thing about technology is there are always replays :) If the BBC has video online, their coverage was the best – our ABC wasn’t too bad – but they did overtalk the service at times. (From what I gather CNN preferred the sound of their pundit voices to the service presentations)
That we lived in the times of Mandela is a wonderful legacy for all who live today. That he’s buried in a place where folks can visit and remember, where his life began – brings him close to all his people.
Well said, DF.
GM America – I watched most of the funeral – the village is pleased to have their son return – one for the ages
Morning 99ts! Rest in peace, Madiba.
Wow, talk about a ‘news’ agency revealing itself – from AFP:
(AFP) – Pope Francis said he knew a lot of “good” Marxists but was no communist himself, following criticism of his diatribes against unfettered capitalism from conservative commentators in the United States…..
Idiots. Pope Francis gives “diatribes,” but the popes who condoned economic exploitation and promoted narrow political ideologies gave pronouncements. Those other popes did what they were expected and didn’t stir up anyone’s self-satisfied preconceptions about the world and themselves. Pope Francis has to be diminished in every way possible to make his statements less disturbing. Kind of reminds you of the constant attempts to diminish a president we all know and love. News flash to media: it’s not going to work!!!! He’s bigger than you are and beyond your understanding.
Wasn’t that amazing Jackie? In a supposedly straight ‘news’ report from a big news agency, they use that word? I note the reporter didn’t accuse Rush Limbaugh of delivering diatribes, which said it all.
The US news reporters have a selection of adjectives that they use to describe anyone who doesn’t support the GOP right wing political agenda. They use them randomly against everyone other than GOP mouthpieces. The Pope has very quickly discovered his words will be twisted – because – no reason needed.
So true, 99ts. He is making some very, very powerful enemies who, of course, largely control the media, the efforts to smear and undermine him in the months ahead will, I’m guessing, be a sight to behold. In that sense, his experience will be similar to PBO’s.
I’m thinking “strange bed fellows” – but then again – they have very similar goals – so not at all strange.
I read an article yesterday – can’t remember where – giving one persons view of discovering that the media really is blaming the President and the democrats for the failings of the GOP. It was probably linked on TOD. Hopefully that will be realized by many more before Nov 2014.
You’re so right Chips & 99ts.
I was very heartened to see that a poll showed Americans felt that the pope deserved to be TIME’s POY over Edward Snowden by a 7:1 margin. Yesterday some clueless Snowjob-supporting dudebro tweeted in response to that poll that people prefer “comforting lies” over “disturbing truths.” I asked that idiot since when is voicing concern about massive wealth inequalities & widespread poverty “comforting lies?” I’m still waiting to hear from him.
And I have a funny feeling that the media will turn on NYC’s Mayor-elect de Blasio in a similar fashion once he’s sworn into office and begins to show that he means business, and his Mayorship is more than just having a cute teenage son with an Afro.
Really awful. Webster dictionary def of diatribe includes the word “angry”. Who has EVER said that a Pope spoke out in anger? Not even when speaking out against wars has their word been described that way.
Good morning, Chips, that is one beautiful and touching photo! Thank you. Missed everything once again last night. The snow was pretty intense, but we stupidly tried to get to a local church for a Christmas event. Got dressed, drove out into the snow only to find that the event had been cancelled (two dimwits who didn’t call first). Getting back was s…l…o…w and we were exhausted. Snow has stopped, so the worst seems to be over for now. Going to take the time today so see as much of the coverage as I can. Thank you for providing so much And to 99t for summing it up so well as–”one for the ages.”
Morning Jackie! Oh my word, how frustrating to make that effort only for the event to be cancelled – grrr! Will try to find videos of the funeral so anyone who missed it can catch up.
Keep safe and warm!
It was a much more formal event than the memorial service jackie – but still had the delightful “informality” we saw at the memorial. There was little or no interruptions to the speakers & they could all be heard.. The same man (who in my opinion did a wonderful job) ran most of the proceedings – always making “suggestions” rather than giving orders – I eventually heard that he is the No2 man in the ANC. I can believe this was how Mandela operated when he achieved the consensus that avoided mass bloodshed in his country.
The final service at the grave saw everyone involved working so hard to make it perfect – they even included a flyover – which was something I was not at all expecting.
/wow, 99ts. Thanks for the recap.
It went on for quite some hours – wish I had UT’s skills in picking out the pertinent facts – but we heard from family, friends, political leaders, religious people – some were not in English (the BBC provided some translation). I would suggest you skip through it & select the speakers that attract you most. I found the final sermon from the Bishop (I know not which Bishop) was enriching – must admit to being amused when the MC asked him to give “the shortest sermon he could manage”. In SA they like burials to be at midday – when the sun is overhead and the shadows are the shortest – and they were running late. :)
I began to watch the funeral and succumbed to sleep halfway thru. Fortunately I taped the rest of the funeral on CNN but they were talking so much I’m not sure how much of service was actually captured. It’s a shame that CSPAN one TV chose to re-air a limited segment of Tuesday’s Memorial featuring PBO’s speech and a few speeches afterwards just at the same time the funeral ceremony was taking place. I don’t know why they did that.
The walk to the grave & the service there can be watched without sound – and if they played the Bishop speaking at the end of the main service that is worth listening to.
I have taken to calling TV stations and complaining when they ruin a presentation in this way – I think its related to getting old and cranky! Oh dear.
My tweets from this morning:
@cnni STOP JAWJACKING and let us hear the funeral service! Show some RESPECT! #MandelaFuneral— Alycee (@jazziz2) December 15, 2013

Just added a couple of videos of the funeral to the post
Watched as long as I could keep my eyes open. BBC carried it with good camera work and little pundittwittering.
What a perfect word, Vicki!
Saw that, Chips. Thanks.
A good read. Dare I mention that Bill Moyers is one of the few real journalists that we have.
 Moooooooorning Mister!

Thanks 99! Fixed your link:
That’s weird – yours doesn’t work either??? yet it is copied exactly from the entry – WP seems to not like the 2 commas?
Here’s an amazon link – hope it works

goodness me – I sure wasn’t expecting that – sigh!!!!!!
Discover that you just can’t hit the link that YOU POSTED CORRECTLY (and I duplicated) — have to highlight, copy and paste the whole line … You’re right, WP doesn’t like the commas.
This one works, and it’s great! Good for Rachel Isadora!

McCain is looking for attention. He wants to BE the story. //SMH
You don’t even WANT to know what I’m thinking now.
I’m thinking the same thing
LOL – I can only imagine what it is…
Well, it’s not polite, if that’s a clue :)
There are many causes right here in the US to take up. He could have visited the immigrant family issue tent or he could stand with folks who are fighting for minimum wage. I could name more.
Exactly – no one is falling for this hypocritical and self-serving display.
John McCain so wish he was President of the United States. Why is he always running around somewhere? Sticking his nose where it is not needed or wanted.
Good morning, TOD. Watched most of service online at SABC link. I’m so disgusted with American broadcast/cable; CtpNN was the only carrier — they talked over most of the service… Below is link to printed program.

Good Morning Chips and everybody.
The First Family will leave Friday for Christmas vacation.
Morning JER! Just saw that yesterday, hopefully there will be no delays for them this time, that will be one heckuva well deserved break!
Can’t WAIT for all the family to have this well deserved rest in paradise.
Great weather, too! http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/Honolulu+HI+USHI0026:1:US
Hope they have a wonderful two weeks of rest in beautiful Hawaii…..yes, Cokie, one of the 50 states!
Sadly, some people who work in Eastern bureaucracies don’t know WY is a State either. At least twenty-years ago they didn’t. ;)
Good to hear about our First Family heading to Hawaii for their Christmas vacation this coming Friday.
It will be Sunny first trip to Hawaii, I hope she is on her best behavior. No knocking down any kids so the media can talk about how wild she is, and Sunny and Bo will not be taking a plane to Hawaii by themselves.
anniebella, is this Sunny’s first trip on AF1
I don’t know about this being her first trip on AF1, but it will be her first trip to Hawaii.
Wonderful! May there be no interruptions this year. I’m going to TweetofGod there be a blackout of All Sunday Morning Show and punditry or as it’s better known here, Pukitry. Well, maybe that’s the first you’ve heard it here. 🎄🎁.
Harold Itzkowitz, ……all the tweets I have received from gun owners proves we need mental health background check. So true, so true. After listening to some of these gun lovers you have to wonder if they have any dam sense at all.
Highlights — not be be missed from the service:
Remarks by Mr. Ahmed Kathrada (imprisoned 26 year with Madiba)
Tribute by Granddaughter – Ms. Nandi Mandela
Tribute by President Joyce Banda (Malawi)
Tribute by President Jakaya Kikwete (Tanzania)
Sermon by Bishhop Z Siwa
Must say, I learned so much about, culture, traditions, history by reading the live chat on SABC.
So beautiful! Thanks for making it possible to see it Chips.

Prettyfoot, you’re a sweetheart – thank you soooooo much!
You are very much welcome
May I agree times a million. No need to search the Internet, come right to the Obama Diary. Thank you Chips and your great eyes and ears for what people want to know. You have attracted great followers who post great links and the best talent for helping you post. Say hi to Danny. His pics yesterday were so cute. He is the “Cutest Puppy Show”.
OMG Chips!!!! I just saw that you did a thread on the “phone call” :)
I wasn’t online yesterday. I was out of town doing Christmas shopping. Oh what fun that day was. Thanks for sharing that memory again.
Good morning all.
I don’t know if this has been posted here before and if it was I am sorry to repeat but it is a must read and spread everywhere, I think.
See if you agree:
” President Obama never answered back to the disgusting southern right wing rubes from the former slave states that have tried to belittle, mock and stymie his presidency shouting “You lie” in a million ways, while actually meaning “You lie, nigger!”
And did the “enlightened” Left have President Obama’s back? No. They carp about his “failure” because a website was slow to get running! The white privileged “progressive” few were too busy blaming him for getting lynched and telling him how to craft policy while a rope was put around his neck again and again and tightened with each filibuster, each lie told on the radio, each self-defeating scorched earth action to stop him from succeeding, even if it meant taking us all down too.”
I have to ask WHO is the audience that he is addressing…it certainly is not Blk folks….did he suddenly get some kind of Epiphany…about the racist nature of some folks of the PL…..and 2ndly…he lost his creditability with me when he used the N word….
our President is NOT a victim ready to be lynched…he is NOT helpless…he has a long term plan…and is moving on this plan….as has been noted by pundits (Smartypants, Spandan, and most recently John Stuart) whom I trust much more than Frank Schaeffer…
this Paternalist piece of jive that he wrote is just that JIVE….
as someone would say…
Move on…there is NOTHING to see here…
Prettyfoot58- Frank Schaeffer is a longtime supporter of the President. If you read his piece, he is saying that the GOP, right and left media people are engaged in this and how wrong it is and people must stand up and have the PBO’s back . Mr Schaeffer definitely has and by this piece is calling attention to what he sees happening. It is not a paternalist piece , in my view.
His using of the N word…is suspect to me as is his piece…
we will have to agree to disagree
I agree that Schaeffer’s use of the term “lynching” is a bit hyperbolic – he should just call it what it is. Race-based opposition and resentment, yes, but it’s not lynching. I think Schaeffer is well-meaning as criquet indicated, but he needs to stop portraying PBO as if he were a poor disenfranchised Black man of the pre-civil rights era. He’s the most powerful man in the world and like any other person in power – he will be targeted by certain groups and factions particularly those who feel threatened by his agenda. And his ethnic/racial background certainly adds another component to the opposition – but it’s still not at the level of lynching.
I read the piece, and I know who his target audience is: rightwing fundamentalists and left wing pundits…..neither of which “get” President Obama. The only way he could wake up his audience is to use this kind of language, as that is what the right wing do overtly, and the left wing do covertly. .
I’m part of Frank’s demographic……and he was not over the top. This message needs to get through. I did not see President Obama portrayed as helpless, I saw the right and left wings portrayed as hateful and ugly.
Yes, his use of the N word was very discomfiting, but he said what Joe Wilson was implying. These are truths the body politic has to face, as ugly as they are.
I fully believe President Obama knew a lot of what he would be facing. He is a realist…….a compassionate realist.
Frank’s part about President Obama not answering his critics is powerful and can resonate with religious people, as he is almost quoting the part about Christ being accused by Pilate, where it says, “And he opened not his mouth.” Religious people will recognize that.
Jim Stuart talks about President Obama planting seeds of opportunity, and Frank Schaeffer is planting seeds of understanding for a certain demographic.
Your point is well-taken carolyn. I could certainly see why he felt the need to emphasize the particularly vitriolic nature of the Right and Left’s opposition to PBO. In other words, if they *could* lynch him, they would.
like is said…I humbly disagree….
I agree it was unnecessary.
2013 Heisman Trophy speech video: Jameis Winston becomes youngest winner of award
By Pete Volk @Pete_Volk on Dec 14 2013, 9:41p
At 19 years old, Jameis Winston has become the youngest player ever to win the Heisman Trophy award, winning out over fellow finalists Johnny Manziel, Jordan Lynch, Andre Williams, Tre Mason and A.J. McCarron.
When my sons were young they only played with balls; footballs, baseballs, soccer balls. I started out with Sports Illustrated for Kids, then Sports Illustrated. I usually read the whole magazine. When I could talk sports with the guys in the office area, one of the other women asked me why. I told her I had two boys and I read Sports Illustrated. She couldn’t understand why I did. I told her in a way she could relate to, “It’s the best gossip rag out there”. ;)
CBS Sunday Morning is about to do a segment on the Pope.
nuts. missed it.
me too…but later it will be available on their website…
do you think this pope is on his way to being as transformational as Pope John XXIII
I wonder that too. I hope so! :-)
Don’t they charge for watching?
ummm…I do not think so
Oh, they wanted money from me once and I never went back. It was 60 min.

It’s a step in the right direction. And that number will grow….
Why do you think it will?
$ – Stupid GOP governors are turning down free federal money that will help their constituents out of partisan spite.
GOOD Morning, TODvillage!
I see the news report about Iran being upset because the US penalized companies who were breaking the sanctions placed on Iran…they feel blindsided…according the news report…I do not know why they are feeling blindsided…did they not believe the US would still hold companies accountable for breaking the sanctions….interesting
First clue: ‘news report’
Exactly! Take these “reports” with the appropriate amount of salt. :)

I watched this speech again yesterday afternoon, and was as blown away by it as I was the first time. The people standing outside in the back of the President (who prior to his speech were restless and somewhat distracting), were very much in tuned with him while he spoke. One man kept blowing kisses and sending it to the audience and/or to PBO while PBO spoke. It was really a sight to behold – the whole event.
Rise and Shine.
Thanks, Chips. Farewell Madiba!
Here’s a very short summary video of Mandela’s final funeral service.
