Rise and Shine

On This Day – Pete Souza: “Two days after the shootings at Newtown, the President traveled to Connecticut to meet with the victims’ families and give remarks at a prayer vigil. The President spent hours greeting family members. Difficult as that was for everyone, the one moment that helped sooth the pain was when he posed for a photo with the siblings and cousins of Emilie Parker, one of the 20 children who died that day in Newtown. I see both sadness and hope in this photograph, and I know after a lot of tears that day, it meant so much to the President that everyone was able to smile for a moment in this family photo. Thanks to the Parker family for allowing us to show this photograph publicly.” Dec. 16, 2012

Michael Tomasky: Why Obama’s Haters Are Worse Than Bush’s

The left’s critics of the Bush presidency are no match to today’s paranoid right, as this week’s insane innuendo – from the Hawaii plane crash to The Handshake – perfectly illustrates.

Permit me to share with you my favorite set of headlines from Thursday.

USA Today: Official who OK’d Obama birth papers dies in crash.

NPR: Hawaiian Official Who Released Obama’s Birth Certificate Dies in Plane Crash.

NBC News: Health care director who approved Obama birth certificate dies in plane crash.

And finally, National Review, and note the difference, which rests in just one word, but what a word it is: Official Who Released Obama’s Birth Certificate Dies in Mysterious Plane Crash.

Ah, of course. “Mysterious.” Well, I mean, it had to be, didn’t it?

Steve Benen: Why there’s no Republican health care plan

Where’s the Republican alternative to the Affordable Care Act? The question is generally best suited for milk cartons – it’s pretty clear GOP officials would love to “repeal” the federal health care law, but we’ve been waiting for years to know what they’d “replace” it with.

…. As for why Republicans have no rival plan, there’s no great mystery. Every credible, effective solution requires some combination of regulating the private insurance market and investing in broader coverage for consumers. There’s just no way around that, and as a result, GOP officials are left with an ideological hurdle they simply cannot clear.

And so Republicans spin their wheels, condemning a policy that they used to like – remember, the basic ACA blueprint was a conservative approach to health care reform – while pretending to have an alternative they can’t identify in earnest.

Crooks and Liars: When Will CNN Start Being Honest About The ACA?

Another Sunday full of talking heads concerning their empty little selves with how Politifact’s ridiculous Lie of the Year determination might hurt Democrats.

…. If only Politifact had been around when George W. Bush was lying to us about Iraq and WMD. Maybe we could have saved thousands of lives by opposing that war before they sent troops into that godforsaken place for no specific purpose other than settling the score and Dubya’s Daddy issues.

Meanwhile, our panelists completely ignore the true liars in Politifact’s lie of the year: Insurers. Once again, I urge them to read the transcript of an actual telephone call which took place in 2010 luring an insured in a grandfathered plan out of that plan and into one that wasn’t grandfathered.

ThinkProgress: Newtown Victim’s Sister: ‘It Only Takes 90 Seconds’ To Do A Background Check

One year ago at Sandy Hook Elementary School, a 27-year-old teacher, Victoria Leigh Soto, threw herself between her first graders and Adam Lanza, taking the bullets he meant for them. A photograph of her younger sister, Carlee, receiving the news of Vicki’s death on her cell phone quickly became a symbol of national heartbreak over the shooting.

On this week’s Fox News Sunday, Carlee Soto, 21, spoke with host Chris Wallace about that day and her newfound advocacy on gun violence. Soto expressed her frustration with the Senate’s failure to pass bipartisan background check legislation in April…

A Year Ago Today:

Pete Souza: “The President works on his Newtown speech at an auditorium in suburban Washington. Two days earlier, I had photographed him when John Brennan first briefed him on the shootings. Throughout that day, he reacted as we all did, which people witnessed when he delivered his statement a few hours later. Before we headed to Newtown for the Sunday night vigil, he went to watch his daughter Sasha, 11, at her rehearsal for the Nutcracker; he would be unable to attend her performance because of the trip to Newtown. During breaks in the rehearsal, he worked on his speech. His expression in this photograph may be subtle to the viewer, but not to me. There is emotion and resolve etched on his face, and he knew the importance of this speech for the nation.” Dec. 16, 2012

ThinkProgress: How Newtown Transformed Gun Activism

In the year since the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, the American gun debate was thrust into the center of the national conversation. The horrific shooting, which left 20 children and 6 adults dead, galvanized both advocates and opponents of stricter gun regulation. 2013 saw a slew of new gun laws in virtually every state; 29 states weakened gun restrictions while 21 others and DC strengthened them. Even after a widely popular bipartisan bill to expand background checks on gun sales failed in the Senate, Newtown continues to shape the way Americans think about guns — and the way activists talk to them.

Below is a rundown of where gun activists stand one year after Newtown…

Chips, I especially love it when you have so many great Souza photos to start the day. Long after every nasty newspaper article has lined its last birdcage and every right wing pundit has retired into obscurity, Pete Souza’s photos of President Barack Obama will live on. Generation after generation will pore over them and treasure each look, each event, each expression of love and hope he shares. He will always be regarded as one of the great presidents of the modern era and we will always be thought of as lucky to have worked for him, loved him and lived in the great time of his presidency. When we are all very old (older in my case) young people will ask, “What was it like? Did you ever meet him or hear him speak?” And it will be a source of pride for us when we tell them that we knew when we saw him that he was special and we worked hard to get him elected and tens of thousands of us got together to share our joy in him on a site called The Obama Diary.

      • December 16, 2013 at 10:06 am

Noticed that too Meta, he usually added a new batch of photos to Flickr every month, I just hope he hasn’t held back because of all the attacks on him and photographers’ access.

        • December 16, 2013 at 10:33 am

OK, so it’s not just me worrying.

I’m a little freaked out that Pete is taking all this personally. I noticed he’s responding more on twitter to these creeps. He’s such a consummate professional, among the best in his field. For him to pull back on the public display of his outstanding work is a loss for ALL.

          • December 16, 2013 at 10:39 am

It really did strike me too that he was taking it personally, Meta, you could tell from some of his Twitter responses – I wish he’d just ignored the creeps and carried on as before. I doubt a word was said to him when he was Reagan’s photographer, but we know why. I’d give anything for him to post a new batch of photos to Flickr and give the two fingers to the shills.

HUPD and Cambridge Police are on the scene. Out of an abundance of caution, the buildings have been evacuated while the report is investigated. It’s times like this when I long for the post-2017 period, when the Obama family will be free of the vampirish idiots that try and suck all the joy out of everything beautiful that they do. This family is a joy to behold, and an example for everyone on how to live every day rising above the muck. The Obama family will continue to thrive after 2016 – what will the haters do with all their hate?

          • 76 jacquelineoboomer
            December 16, 2013 at 2:29 pm

The selfish part of me wants to just “look off, longingly” at the post-2017 period, and savor a full three more years, because there’s no way we’ll get to share as much then in the daily comings and goings of the Obama family. Nor should we. But I totally agree that it will be a blessed relief to see them thriving and continuing to add goodness to their surroundings, at their own discretion and, more often than not, privately.

You asked, ” … what will the haters do with all their hate?”

To turn them into nothingness, I’ll ask, ” … what will we do with all our love?”

They say “chemicals in anti-bacterial soaps could have hormonal effects and allow bacteria to mutate into harder to control strains”, including those in the popular brands of Softsoap, Cetaphil and Dial products. They have been Layla. Just last week, Issa cut-off the mic of an elected official who was asking questions to an invited guest to a hearing Issa was chairing on yet again ACA. Dems spoke out and nothing was done for The TBGOPers control the House and the media ignored the story. Now, had been a Dem who did that, the Rightwing media echo chamber will be on it 24/7 and the so called MSM would be chasing after every Dem to denounce the action and WHPC would devote the entire presser with Jay Carney accusing Dems of abuse of Power.

Those who control the media control the message and now are controlling the political discourse no matter what most Americans want. Dems with money need to understand that and start developing their Own Media.

Philadelphia PA- Today, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) called for an extension of unemployment insurance. Senator Casey was joined by Philadelphians who are set to see their benefits expire at the end of this month to push for the extension. The Senate is set to take a vote in early January yet the House of Representatives still hasn’t scheduled a vote. Casey called on both Houses to vote on and pass an extension of unemployment benefits that will boost the economy and aid those looking for work.

“Extending unemployment insurance will help those looking for work and produce growth in the economy,” Senator Casey said. “The pace of job growth has increased in the last few months but there are still far too many Pennsylvanians looking for work. Extending unemployment insurance will help those actively seeking work and provide a jolt to GDP as we move into the new year. I’m pleased the Senate is set to vote on this issue soon and I’m calling on both Houses of Congress to take up and pass this legislation.”

If sanity exists anywhere he should face charges – and not only in the USA. He has caused way more harm to international relationships than any of those “cold war spies” of the 1950s.

Motion to invoke cloture and confirmation vote for Jeh Johnson to become Secretary of Homeland Security comes up today at about 5:30pm.

Dear Chips (aka Mama Danny), I just wanted to say thank you so much for the “Farewell, Madiba” post. I so appreciated the 2 videos! I’ll go back there until I’ve watched them all in full. Bless!

An aside from the wonderful words being spoken at the funeral. I’m in awe of the candles! Mine never last that long, except the battery kind! That’s my frivolous thought of the hour! I’m rationing them as a 24/7 defense against dumb & ugly! :)

NSA phone surveillance program likely unconstitutional, federal judge rules

    • Dragnet ‘likely’ in breach of fourth amendment
    • Judge describes scope of program as ‘Orwellian’
    • Ruling relates to collection of Americans’ metadata

Leon granted a preliminary injunction sought by plaintiffs Larry Klayman and Charles Strange, concluding that their constitutional challenge was likely to be successful. In what was the only comfort to the NSA in a stinging judgment, he put the ruling on hold, pending an appeal by the government.

I think Larry Klayman is that jerk that stood in front of the WH and told our President to ” put down the Koran…get off his knees and come out with his hands up. “

This Right-Wing ruling will be struck down by the Supreme Court. Let them enjoy their short-lived, pyrrhic victory.

I’m mostly ambivalent about this decision; I was never overly concerned about how the NSA goes about doing its job. With all the talk about the NSA, one would think that the NSA came into existence 12:01 a.m. on that cold January morning in 2009. I can put my hand on the bible and swear that up until about five years ago I never heard so many people talk this much about the NSA.

If the President was on the other side of this issue, most of the people complaining and outraged would be screeching the opposite of what they’re saying now. Truth is, I am ambivalent about it, too. I’m more concerned about the private companies getting access to my private information for the purpose of squeezing money out of me – rather than the national security people having access to my private information for the purpose of keeping me safe.

Me to theo67… I told a story a couple days ago that I went to a website to place and order and when I started entering my data, our BUSINESS e-mail address dropped in all by itself…….I had never ordered anything on that site before, ever…

Now…I am seeing ads for the company on every site I view…….

Strange how all this is revealed – only under a democratic administration – I know the GOP care not one iota about women’s rights – interesting that they are so very bothered about these things.

Guess it is now guaranteed that Obamacare is a success – the media and the GOP have something else to move along with. They are scum – all of them, any of them

And yet again the President proves his strength of character by not swerving from the issues that he cares about. The GOP are reeling because health care happened. Its success will hopefully put them out to pasture.

I think they are in for a shock when this gets to the appeals courts….especially since PBO just ” packed ” it…..teehee

???? – I thought it was Snowden who took the personal information to the communists/past communist countries. What am I missing?

It seems some really will not rest until the revolution is physically fought for the second time. Sometimes I am glad to live in a country of political apathy.

Testing. Testing 1-2-3. Briefly checking out today’s news. Migraine chose today to remind me it’s not history, so have been lying with a pillow over my head, eyes squeezed tightly closed and Novo-naprox to keep it tamed. All while wondering what you guys are up to! This is definitely a test to see how long I can last while trying to hold the numbness around the edges to a minimum.
