Dominic Patten: President Obama Offered ‘House Of Cards’ Role By Netflix CEO

Now this would be a cameo that would render even Kevin Spacey’s Frank Underwood speechless. Reed Hastings today publicly hit up President Obama to appear on House Of Cards, in which Spacey plays the loquacious, ambitious and ruthless U.S. congressman. A little less than two months before Season 2 of the show debuts, the offer from the Netflix CEO came during a photo op at the White House this morning as Obama met with Hastings and other tech company CEOs and bosses to discuss the troubled Obamacare website and the government’s national security surveillance efforts.

According to the White House pool report, the President was overheard asking Hastings,  “I’m just wondering if you brought advance copies ofHouse of Cards?” The report adds, “the exec laughed and invited Obama to do a cameo on the series.” The President also joked that Spacey’s Underwood is “getting a lot of stuff done” and “I wish things were that ruthlessly efficient” in the real-life DC. That drew a big laugh from Hastings, Apple’s Tim Cook, Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer and the 12 other tech bosses in attendence.

ABC: Obama Meets With Tech CEOs Amid NSA Concerns

The White House says the meeting was focused on the administration’s efforts to repair the HealthCare.gov website and reform government information technology, but National Security Agency surveillance programs also were on the agenda. The White House said afterward that Obama had the opportunity to hear directly from the CEOs as he and his aides study dozens of recommendations on government surveillance programs that a special task force delivered late last week, and as the White House finalizes its own internal review of these programs. The process is expected to conclude in January.

“The president made clear his belief in an open, free, and innovative Internet and listened to the group’s concerns and recommendations, and made clear that we will consider their input as well as the input of other outside stakeholders as we finalize our review,” the White House said. In a statement afterward that was issued through the White House, the technology companies said they appreciated the chance to share their concerns with Obama.

Everytime I see him smiling, I’m reminded of called the Stephaniue Miller (radio) show one morning and gloatingly predicted Pres. Obama was going to have a mental breakdown soon.

I was rolling my eyes so hard I thought they’d fall out.

Seems a lot of right wingers are obsessed with the idea of breaking Pres. Obama. It’s rather weird.

‘Who can turn the world on with his smile? Who can take a nothing GOP and make it all seem worth while. Well it’s PBO don’t you know it; with each little glance and movement he shows it.” My little paraphrase/parody/smash-up based on the theme song to the Mary Tyler Moore show’s theme.

I agree with President Obama. House of Cards is “ruthless.” I tried watching about five or six episodes of Season One before bailing out. I could not find one character I could identify with… meaning not one character who had any sense of empathy for the less fortunate. Everyone on that series is an asshole.

We watched the British House of Cards…..1995-1997….superb! Also ruthless, but the major characters made you root for them in a rather perverse way. Acting was absolutely tops. We were disappointed when it ended. SO………when the new one came on Netflix, we were excited to watch it. We did not make it through the first episode. The story seemed ginned up…..the goal wanted was just not as important as Prime Minister, and no time was given to character development, it was just mean. We didn’t even finish the first episode, and never attempted any more.

Dec. 17 is the Pope’s 77th birthday. Saw this article from the Catholic News Agency that mentioned he had said Mass in the morning and “Pope Francis then followed his usual custom after mass of greeting everyone in attendance. Today, the Papal Almoner, Msgr. Konral Krajewski, presented four homeless people who live in the Vatican area to the Pontiff.”

Also from the article: “Another special birthday surprise for the Pope came in the form of a victory for his favorite soccer club, ‘San Lorenzo de Almagro.’ Upon being told about their win, one Italian newspaper reports that Pope Francis exclaimed, ‘what a joy!'”

So, TODers who also have a favorite soccer club, next time they win, why not just yell, “What a joy!” Or not! Ha.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2013/12/17/elizabeth-warren-sheds-light-on-washingtons-failure/

Today, Elizabeth Warren is introducing a bill to ban the use of credit scores during the hiring process. While this is a fairly small-bore reform, it is probably still worth doing.

This fact sheet from Demos gives the lowdown on Warren’s bill (which has been previously introduced in the House). Here’s a particularly sharp part of the analysis:
Credit reports were developed to help lenders assess the risks associated with making a loan. Over the last few years, they have been aggressively marketed to employers as a means to gauge an applicant’s character or likelihood to commit theft or fraud. Yet there is no proven link between personal credit reports and criminal behavior or performance of a specific job. A spokesperson for TransUnion, one of the major credit reporting companies, admitted in 2010: “We don’t have any research to show any statistical correlation between what’s in somebody’s credit report and their job performance or their likelihood to commit fraud.”

I can’t tell you all what a BFD this is to millions of people that have been hit hard by this economic catastrophe. I hope this goes through the zoo that is congress and this becomes the law of the land!

This is actually AGAINST THE LAW! These people are covered under the McKinney Vento Act!

http://www2.ed.gov/policy/elsec/leg/esea02/pg116.html As educators they should be ashamed of themselves. I hope this goes to court and those families win this case!

          • 77 desertflower
            December 17, 2013 at 9:10 pm

the McKinney-Vento Act also ensures homeless children transportation to and from school free of charge, allowing children to attend their school of origin (last school enrolled or the school they attended when they first become homeless) regardless of what district the family resides in. It further requires schools to register homeless children even if they lack normally required documents, such as immunization records or proof of residence. To implement the Act, States must designate a statewide homeless coordinator to review policies and create procedures, including dispute resolution procedures, to ensure that homeless children are able to attend school. Local school districts must appoint Local Education Liaisons to ensure that school staff are aware of these rights, to provide public notice to homeless families (at shelters and at school) and to facilitate access to school and transportation services.[11]

I’m seriously PISSED! I really hope some lawyer grabs this up and makes a huge stink!

            • December 17, 2013 at 9:18 pm

The suit against the school was brought by the Education Law Center of Pennsylvania, df.

“The matter went to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, which issued a preliminary ruling on Thursday to immediately re-enroll the students, pending the outcome of the suit.”

I suspect that the more exposure we can bring to this case, the better – not just for these 2 students, but for the more than 1 million!!!! homeless students.

Democratic Sens. Patty Murray (WA), Mary Landrieu (LA), and Tammy Baldwin (WI) introduced the Higher Education Access and Success for Homeless and Foster Youth Act on 21 Nov 2013 to address this deplorable situation – one of many that are the result of 30+ years of GOP servitude to the wealthiest few. http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2013/11/21/2980791/homeless-college/

I actually read your posted piece AFTER I went on my tirade:) As an educator, at least in MY district, we have to watch and sign off on a litany of rules, laws and federal regulations, every. single. year. I’ve watched these videos so often I could recite them all in my sleep…the thought that educators elsewhere wouldn’t know that these existed, or help these kids in any way possible, to allow seamless learning during their trying time, infuriated me. This school district needs to have their asses pinned to a wall and become the poster child for fighting against this shameless discrimination all over America! I want to scream, but I’m glad that they’re all over this.

I am now going to spend some family time getting the Christmas tree into the house and at least put the lights on it:) It’s been a day.

            DF,

Ask anyone in PA, and they’ll tell you that PA has been doing lots of unlawful things against schools this year.

Can’t recall the details, but apparently Corbett has launched a full on assault against public education in PA. Lots of school closings.

Let’s hope voters come to their senses next year and kick out the cruel GOP Governors, House Reps and Senators.

Yes, Arapaho, Corbett’s contempt for public schools is one of the reasons why he is so hated in this state. He is in servitude to the Koch brothers and exists to carry out their orders–could care less about Pa or its children. This next year will be critical to the state–we must elect a new governor or the future will be very dark indeed for Pennsylvanians.

JOB, you can always count on some idiot SOB to kick someone when they’re down. The school system should be doing everything possible to help these children, rather than injuring them further.

            December 17, 2013 at 10:39 pm

It’s sick and sad. Children who are not responsible for their homeless situation are further bruised and ignored by a school system?

And yet in other communities, school principals have washers and dryers and changes of clothing at the school so that they may wash the clothes of kids who arrive at the school without clean clothes, if they come from a neglectful home. Anything to keep the children in school, and help them learn. Once heard an inner-city Philadelphia school principal relate that story to a large group of us, and just about every one of us had tears in our eyes when we left the presentation. Unreal.

A US preacher and Christian broadcaster who predicted the end of the world three times has died age 92.

Harold Camping, a retired civil engineer, died at his home on Sunday after a stay in hospital for a fall.

His independent Christian ministry, formed in 1958, most recently spent millions warning the world that the end of days would come on 21 May 2011.

He was criticised by other Christian leaders after some believers sold their possessions to help his cause.

If Barbara Walters truly believed that the Obama’s weren’t interesting, she wouldn’t have used them to bait viewers into watching her silly self-promoting show about her interviews with Reagan etc. She would have advertised her show on its own merits. But she knows perfectly well that the current WH occupants are far more interesting than any of the silly obsolete dinosaurs (including herself) that she paraded on that show.

    • December 17, 2013 at 9:57 pm

      This steams me no end.

I watched Walters’ interview with our President and First Lady (knowing that their portion of the interview was less than 20 minutes of the hour long show, and saw how disappointed TODville was that her program was oversold as being about the President, when in fact it was all about Barbara.

Her “most interesting moment” was some drivel with Reagan. Completely unmemorable.

I was appalled when she challenged the President as not being trustworthy. To the most honest President, or politician, for that matter in our lifetimes.

But this crosses the line. Goddammit, the President is NOT a failure. JHC shut these treasonous people up that get PAID to spread vile lies.

This year alone there have been two nationwide referendums on executive pay, one of which approved strict limits on bonuses and banned golden handshakes.

Now two more votes are on the way, the first on the introduction of a minimum wage, and the second, and most controversial, on a guaranteed basic income for all legal residents, whether they work or not.

A universal basic income sounds very radical, but it is not a new idea – Thomas More proposed it in his work Utopia in the 16th Century.

On the left, universal basic income is thought to be fairer, while on the right it is seen as the policy that would make welfare payments obsolete.

They are always IN Talks, yet producing very little in result.

Where Sweden is concerned, I am a doubting Thomasana.

Random episode that I admit I cannot tie to President Obama, but will sneak in, anyway. Hope it gives ya a smile, especially if you’re suffering through the same chilly evening I am.

Tonight, my nearly-3-y/o great grandson pretend-called the police using his hand to “report” that his aunt was “being mean” to him (by not hanging up her real phone when he said he needed to place a call to his friend).

At the very end of his pretend-call aka report to the police, he very sweetly said to the fictitious “cop” he was talking to:

    “Love ya. Bye.”

Glad to hear he has such loving feelings for “the law.” Hope that lasts his whole life – Ha!

egg.sack.lee. Since only people, not guns, kill people, what’s wrong with regulating the people?

Yes Indeed, AMK and CarolMae! Lets regulate the insane and deranged people, criminals, and hateful people with records of domestic violence, by making sure that they have no access to guns that they end up using to murder innocent people.

In the Reno shooting in addition to reported 2 fatalities, the shooter and a victim, the other 2 shooting victims said to both be in critical condition, one reported to be a dr. Both in surgery. Gunmen walked into dr.’s busy waiting room with gun at his side, pointed it at everyone and said that they better get out of there—-and then entered the door to the back examining rooms/dr.’s offices where the shooting likely occurred.
