For the sake of everyone who’s been or will be released from Russian prisons, I’m glad the Sochi games were not transferred somewhere else. Without the spur of the games, the ‘political’ prisoners would have rotted in their cells.
:) Thanks. amk…dawn won’t even be for a couple more hours….what am I thinking? Somewhere around noon, I’ll need the nap I can’t take! Going to be a loooooooooooooooong day.
No…not yet. Too much to do in this moment. It’s not to say that it doesn’t cross my mind, but I don’t stay awake at night thinking about it :) Yet.
Morning to you, mtmarilyn! Well, I’ve been up since 4:30am…what a joke! I can’t go back to sleep because if I do, I won’t get up to go to work on time. It’s cold, rainy and dark. WTH am I awake for?? Must be amk’s toons :)
I woke up about that time, too, DF. Made myself a cup of hot tea, took it back to bed and drifted off for two hours. Hope you can get rested up this weekend.
The site went wackadoodle during my last comment…..
Amk, you are just the person I’ve been waiting for. With your global perspective, I’m sure you know about the powellmemo written in August of ’71 and know it’s really the blueprint for what’s been happening in the U.S. for the last forty years.
Congrats again on the daughter’s considerable educational accomplishments. Hoping the ‘driving’ is going well. (Taught 2 sons and one daughter..YIPES!!) Hopefully wifey unit has a yoga room to keep her calm.
For laughs and giggles,..can we start a pool for 23 million by the end of the year? Less that 120.000 to go! At approx. 900 hits per hour, it could happen!
BlackWaterDog………wherever you are…….your input and photos at DK brought me here. I will be forever grateful
I’m with Booman…maybe those sore loser, petulant children in CONgress will give me the Christmas gift that I REALLY want…..none of them come back!! That would make me more happy than you know….
DF. you may be groggy, but you’re really cooking. Jim Stuart is one of the most challenging bloggers writing today. I love his posts and his insights. He truly “gets” our president.
States running their own Obamacare insurance exchanges are reporting a significant surge in sign-ups just four days before the first major enrollment deadline.
The increase has ranged from 30 percent to 40 percent in the past few weeks, according to state officials who briefed reporters Wednesday. Monday is the last day to sign up for a plan that will guarantee health coverage effective Jan. 1.
California, which has one of the most successful programs, averaged 15,000 enrollments a day last week, up from an average 7,000 a day the week before, state officials said. In all of November, 80,000 Californians picked a plan; in the first week of December, 50,000 signed up.
“We are all still in the first inning of a nine-inning game,? Covered California executive director Peter Lee said. “Friends are telling friends; family are telling family. … We are quite confident that as we go into the next half of enrollment that we will build momentum.?
In Kentucky, enrollments are up 40 percent since Thanksgiving, straining the state’s exchange and forcing administrators to hire dozens of extra call-center workers and application processors. “We are seeing about 3,000 people a day approved for Medicaid or a [qualified health plan],? Kentucky Health Benefit Exchange executive director Carrie Banahan said. “We started out a few weeks ago at about a thousand per day.?
More than 92,000 people have gotten coverage so far.
I am not of the mind that ignorance and racism are passed on genetically. I think racism and the willingness to be ignorant of facts is learned. Environment (family and friends make up the environment) is key in how a person thinks. The acceptance by loved ones is important to most people. People are high fived and hugged when they spout their family beliefs. Thus racism lives in areas where families espoused those beliefs for years. So pointing out wrongs and lessening acceptance of wrongs might lead to change over time. Education is key.
Mark Ciavarella Jr, a 61-year old former judge in Pennsylvania, has been sentenced to nearly 30 years in prison for literally selling young juveniles for cash. He was convicted of accepting money in exchange for incarcerating thousands of adults and children into a prison facility owned by a developer who was paying him under the table. The kickbacks amounted to more than $1 million.
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has overturned some 4,000 convictions issued by him between 2003 and 2008, claiming he violated the constitutional rights of the juveniles – including the right to legal counsel and the right to intelligently enter a plea. Some of the juveniles he sentenced were as young as 10-years old.
Well, amk. I hope they deny this pissant any possibility of parole and the prison conveniently loses the key to his cell. Also hope that every other male in prison with him knows exactly what he’s done.
I think it's time for a hit of this and some shuteye. Good night, and may the world #tweet you gently… http://t.co/4oBpWqKIBD— RC deWinter (@RCdeWinter) December 20, 2025
The Republican Party is a cult worthy of Jim Jones, and all across America, it’s killing off its followers, just like Jim Jones did.
For reasons that typically have to do with god, gays or guns, low-income people across America frequently vote Republican, thus becoming Republican cultist followers.
And then, just like the followers at Jonestown, they let their leaders in the Republican Party pass out “policy Kool-aid” that actually kills some of them.
For example, right now, 23 states, led by mostly Republican lawmakers, are refusing to expand Medicaid under Obamacare.
As a result, millions of low-income Americans won’t have access to life-saving health care and medications.
And those millions of Americans include the “followers” of the GOP who helped give Republicans control of the House.
Meanwhile, as Republicans are taking away health care from their “followers,” they’re also taking away their food.
Last month, thanks to Republican opposition, Congress failed to extend food stamp benefits to more than 47 million Americans. For a family of four receiving food stamp benefits, that means 21 fewer meals per month.
And, 2.3 million children in California and Texas alone have lost access to food thanks to the Republican-backed cuts.
So, the Republican Party is killing off its “followers” by denying them health care and food. But it doesn’t stop there.
Yet the media, the pundits, their employers, their friends - and worse their congress members tell them “It’s Obama’s fault”. Consequently they continue to vote for the GOP as they sink into illness and poverty
Good morning all!!!!! I just lurve AMK! Big snow storm here this AM! Oh well, it is pretty out there..working this evening so I hope all is better by then!
The U.S. economy grew at its fastest pace in almost two years in the third quarter while business spending was stronger than previously estimated, pointing to some underlying strength that should be sustained.
Gross domestic product grew at a 4.1 percent annual rate instead of the 3.6 percent pace reported earlier this month, the Commerce Department said in its third estimate on Friday.
That was the quickest pace since the fourth quarter of 2011 and beat economists’ expectations for an unrevised 3.6 percent rate. The economy grew at a 2.5 percent pace in the April-June quarter.
Business spending increased at a 4.8 percent rate instead of the 3.5 percent pace reported early this month. That reflected stronger growth in intellectual property products than previously reported.
There were also revisions to consumption. Consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of U.S. economic activity, was revised up 0.6 percentage point to a 2.0 percent rate. The revisions reflected higher spending on both goods and services than previously estimated.
HIS fault again!!! Why does he want America to be strong? (total snark!!) In case there are any sleepyheads out there that think I was serious…I’ve been up since 4:30am!!
Officials: People Returning To HealthCare.gov ‘In Droves’
Nearly three-fourths of those who have purchased health insurance on HealthCare.gov since early December were people returning to the site after visiting in October and November, according to senior administration officials.
A survey on the federal website found that 73 percent of those who had completed enrollment in recent weeks said they had first come to the site in the previous two months, officials said. The Obama administration did not declare the site fully fixed until Dec. 1.
The officials touted the figure as evidence that people were giving HealthCare.gov a second chance after its disastrous launch, which had raised questions about whether frustrated consumers would abandon the sign-up process.
“I think we can definitively say that we just haven’t seen that,” one official said. “Folks have come back, and they’re coming back in droves.”
While listening to Morning Joe this morning it dawned on me, Morning Joe has morphed into “Baghdad Bob.” One can only imagine the filth that comes out of his mouth whilst he entertains his latest “lady friend.?
Happy Holidays, AMK! Thanks for sharing these Great toons! I just love your sense of humor and your fearless commitment to justice.
Congrats and thanks, nath. Without humor & justice, the earth is nothing but hell.
