As a beautiful snow falls over my part of the midwest I am still envious of the Hawaiian warmth shown by these photos. However, I can’t wish that reassuring and strengthening sun and warmth on anyone more deserving than our President and his family. May the warmth and strength spread across this community of brilliant, stalwart and down right clever creators, writers, commenters, and (mostly but loving) lurkers like myself. Blessings on you Chips, by the way.

Good morning Ms. Chips, Danny and TOD Family. I hope everyone had a wonderful News Years Day of celebration and rest. Congrats 99t on being first the lovely Thursday morning. It’s not fair that someone who opens the door to their business to declare themselves as the “first customer” :D :D

Morning, Ranman! I’m giving Ms Chips the credit this morning as it seems she had 10 minutes of alone time to wander around the ‘business’ and do maintenance work. She didn’t squeeze her way through the door while grabbing the medal from the truly first customer. In fairness when she is (morally) right, I have to stand with her.

        Terrific JG.

I have seen countless segments on network and cable television professing that 2013 was a terrible year for President Obama. They love to call it the fifth year curse. But the White House did something brilliant, they posted a 2013 year in review to help refresh the memories of the American people, the GOP and the talking heads. Surprisingly, a lot got done (much of it under the radar) in spite of the ‘Republican Do Nothing Congress’.

The rollout of the healthcare marketplace was clearly a problem that the media/GOP relished. But now that the healthcare.gov website has improved significantly and millions of Americans are getting health insurance for the very first time – the silence from the media and the GOP is deafening. So I guess it is back to Benghazi even though the GOP silly conspiracy theories have been completely debunked.

Facts are stubborn things. The Democrats have a lot to work with for the 2014 midterms. Every Democrat who gets near a camera/microphone should be hammering the GOP (with specifics) for abdicating their responsibility to govern. I still struggle to understand exactly what the GOP will run on in 2014. They got nothin….

Carol, I’m from PA. The key to starting is to accumulate a lot of e-mail addresses. Since we’ve worked on campaigns since 2004 and have a monthly progressive meeting, our e-mail list has grown. You can start small, using the names you got in the 2012 campaign. Then whenever you encounter someone who’s a Dem, you ask if they’d like to have a monthly update. People are especially interested in the “calendar” where we list events coming up so no one misses them. If I knew how to send you one I would. Perhaps I could send it to Chips and she could forward to you. We’ll send ours out in another day or two.

          • January 2, 2014 at 12:10 pm

I was really interested in what you included in the newsletter. I think I can get a few names. I’m also interested in writing letters to the Editor to rebut the foolishness in our local paper. Wyoming will take a long time I’m afraid. Way too dependent on fossil fuels. We don’t have to let that cloud everything. Thanks.

GM vc – just saw your note on Sec Kerry – like PBO he seems to be very results oriented – and works 24×7 to achieve those results. We see a little of what was lost in 2004.

      • 30 jackiegrumbacher
        January 2, 2014 at 8:13 am

There isn’t any doubt in my mind that Kerry would have made a very good president, 99ts, but I don’t think we would then have had President Obama. Many people had to suffer and learn through eight miserable years in order to full appreciate the wonder that is Barack Obama.

        • 31 99ts
          January 2, 2014 at 8:31 am

it is interesting to think what may have been the options – and you could be correct – although I think it may just have been a delay for PBO – he could have been running in 2016 – Not sure what would have happened in 2008/12 if a democrat had been President through the Global financial collapse.

Given the magnitude of electing a black President – the lead in of a disastrous 8 years under Bush was an advantage.

      • 32 vcprezofan2
        January 2, 2014 at 8:15 am

I’ve decided (in retrospect and since things unfurled the way they did) it wasn’t lost; Kerry simply retrenched so that he now comes at this with greater focus, determination, inner strength, and in-your-faced-ness! The extra time Dumbo spent wrecking the kingdom also played into the nourishment of Kerry’s, and PBO’s, determination. I think.

I’ve never been a great fan of Winston Churchill, his oratory skills are beyond comparison, but politically and as a military leader – I’m not so sure of his outcomes. Thus said, I just read this remark – which explains well the disaster of having an ignorant person with no literary skills and minimal intelligence in the white house. Those who do not understand history, those who do not read and study are sure to wreck the kingdom. This comment could have been written for GWB – if only he had read it

“Never, never, never believe any war will be smooth and easy, or that anyone who embarks on the strange voyage can measure the tides and hurricanes he will encounter. The statesman who yields to war fever must realise that once the signal is given, he is no longer the master of policy but the slave of unforeseeable and uncontrollable events. Antiquated War Offices, weak, incompetent, or arrogant Commanders, untrustworthy allies, hostile neutrals, malignant Fortune, ugly surprises, awful miscalculations — all take their seats at the Council Board on the morrow of a declaration of war. “

          • 34 vcprezofan2
            January 2, 2014 at 8:46 am

Before PBO I was never interested in (American/British) history per se but I’d say from the little I know of Georgie B, even if he had read this he wouldn’t have gotten the message. The man seemed to be lacking in so many ways and majorly dense IMO, I was flabbergasted he got a 2nd term! An image that comes to mind, on the rare occasion of him coming to my mind, is that video clip where he talks about terrorists in one breath and in the next says ‘Watch this (golf) drive.’

              January 2, 2014 at 8:55 am

I truly find it more frightening that he hadn’t read it – Churchill created history – he also wrote it – mainly writing the truth (may have glossed over a few of his own short comings) – that any world leader would head off to war without a historical perspective of such is a disaster in the making.

                January 2, 2014 at 9:08 am

Do you honestly think that many of the current senators/congresspeople voting for war, sanctions or whatever have ANY historical perspective? Frankly, I don’t think many of them have any perspective on what is happening in the world TODAY!

Good morning Chips and thanks Catrst for the lovely thoughts about the president in the warmth and sunshine. I hope he can store the warmth away to call on in his infuriating encounters with Boehner and his clowns. There’s going to be a lot of GOP deflecting in the months ahead as the House tries to place blame for their gross incompetence on the president and the Senate R’s blame Harry Reid and the democrats. We, like the president, will have to keep our eyes firmly on the prize and not get distracted by the media or the deflections. We have no Senate races in our state and have still not had one person come forward to challenge our idiot R congressman, but we do have a governor’s race and we absolutely have to succeed in replacing the nincompoop in our state house. I’m trying to gather physical and emotional resources for this big fight, but still fighting holiday lethargy. How’s everyone else doing?

I made the mistake of trying to share these photos with mr. dotster, a fellow golf enthusiast, and now he’s babbling away about HIS 3 holes in one and how I never paid as much attention to those as I do to Obama golf pics.

Good morning Jackie. With the recent successes of Obamacare sign ups and the good economic forecasts, I feel so much more positive about the 2014 elections here in Arizona. The wicked witch of the west Jan Brewer is term limited and we have a great candidate running for Governor. Fred Duval worked with Bruce Babbitt at the Department of the Interior and I haven’t heard of a Republican candidate as yet. President Obama’s Approval Rating Jumps 5 Points as Millions Sign Up for Obamacare
    By: Jason Easley
    Wednesday, January, 1st, 2014, 2:09 pm

President Obama is beginning 2014 on the upswing as millions are signing up for the ACA, and his approval rating has increased by 5 points according to Gallup.

The Gallup Obama approval daily tracking poll reveals that the president’s approval rating has jumped five points since the days before Christmas from 39%-44%. Disapproval of the president has fallen from 54%-49%. President Obama’s approval numbers shift wildly based on the tone of the media coverage that he is receiving, but media’s negativity was hiding a convergence of positive things.

Now that the ACA website is repaired, and millions of Americans are signing up, the media’s endless drumbeat of negativity has temporarily stopped. Without the Republican fueled Obama bashing from the corporate media, the president’s approval rating has gone up, and his disapproval rating has gone down.

Republicans and the media have consistently failed to understand, and in many cases actively worked to undermine, the fact that President Obama remains basically popular. For the sixth year in a row, the president was named the most admired man in the world. For as much as Republicans try to project their hatred and contempt for this president on to the nation, the rest of the country has never shared their feelings.

    • 53 hopefruit2
      January 2, 2014 at 8:49 am

Obama’s poll numbers never went down by as much as the media and their pollster friends claimed. In fact, I would wager that for the entirety of his Presidency, PBO’s ACTUAL approvals remained relatively stable, hovering somewhere between 47-53. Any “approval” in the high 30s or low 40’s reflects a systematically rigged methodology.

      • 54 jackiegrumbacher
        January 2, 2014 at 9:09 am

HF, they HAD to have a gloom and doom scenario at the end of the year to 1) cover up the GOP failures last year after the govt. shutdown and debt ceiling fiascoes 2) depress enrollment in ObamaCare; and 3) encourage GOP expectations and depress Dem enthusiasm for the 2014 election. This was a concerted, well orchestrated effort that included poll rigging.

    • 57 jackiegrumbacher

I cannot help but note the STARK difference in tone when our “liberal” media is reporting on the GOP versus when they are reporting on the Dems, particularly our President and/or anyone in his administration.

Today I saw the NYT headline “Boehner is said to Back Immigration.” If Boehner were a Democrat (e.g., Nancy Pelosi), we KNOW the headline would have read something like: “Against Tea Party wishes, a reluctant (or weakened) Boehner concedes on Immigration Reform.” The language used when reporting headlines about PBO or Democrats is hyperbolic, and negatively slanted by the reporter – versus that for the GOP, which is usually reported in neutral terms, or even framed in a positive way to ward off any possible interpretations of weakness or conflict where the Republicans are concerned.

Hey media, we see you. As LL had written some months ago, there is no such thing as a “liberal media.” They are all a bunch of corporate right-wing hogs who play the “good cop-bad cop” game to keep people coming back for their crap. NO THANK YOU.

    • 63 jackiegrumbacher
      January 2, 2014 at 9:02 am

Hf, WE’VE seen the media hypocrisy for a long time and have never been fooled by it. Our big challenge is to make sure as many people as possible begin to catch on. My sense is that it has become more and more blatant since PBO took office. It was easy to demonize Clinton and unfairly swiftboat Kerry, but there were (and are) masses of people who love the president AND there are demographics and social media changes to deal with. They can’t ‘control the message the way they used to and so they’ve gotten desperate and very obvious.

The local media in NJ has been very friendly to Christie, and the national media did not highlight his weaknesses but spent the year focusing on GOP manufactured scandals about PBO.

However, local politics has a VERY different dynamic from national politics, and the difference is even more pronounced for Republicans -as people like Sarah Palin and Mitt Romney found out.

Republicans vow retaliation after Reid uses nuclear option in Senate

    —————————–

The aide accused McConnell of acting like a sore loser by trying to force a vote on Obama’s jobs package after the Senate already voted to move to final passage of the China bill.

“McConnell isn’t happy unless the Senate is in a state of dysfunction. It personally bothered him this week that members on his side bucked him and voted to cut off a filibuster on a bipartisan bill so it could pass the Senate. He got hot under the collar [Thursday] and was grasping at procedural straws to try to tank a bipartisan bill at the eleventh hour,” said the aide.

I am a long time follower of this site and the information that you guys submit is unbelievable. When I come here, I feel as though I am in “TOD University”, learning and growing each day. My major, truth-in-politics. Thank you Chipsticks for developing this site, and all of the contributors for their insightful minds and writings. If you want to learn and know the truth, this is the place to be in 2014. Ladyhawke, old man McConnell is a miserable soul. How awful it must be to wake up every morning with such hatred in one’s heart; plotting, scheming and hating on the President, the best President ever. He is truly a pitiful soul and his time to serve is coming to a rapid end. We must get these hateful, non-productive, mean spirited creatures out of President Obama’s way in 2014, no exceptions.

Today Show had a little segment on the Obamas xmas gift to the Obama daughters’ godmother, Mama Kaye, somehow was delivered to the wrong recipient, a resident north of Chicago. The recipient said they received a late delivered box delivered yesterday from a relative in New York, that it had been repackaged in a different box, all the gifts were opened inside and at the bottom of the box was this gift for Mama Kaye, signed by the Obama family. It was a photo book of all the pictures taken this year of Mama Kaye and the girls——the recipient gal refused to show on the air, said it was private for Mama Kaye—–and the gift has now been sent to its rightful owner, who I’m sure was happy to get it, even by its circuitous route.
Here’s some background on Mama Kaye, a long time Obama friend, babysitter of the girls, good friend of Grandma Robinson

GM from snowy Chicago, where it has been snowing non-stop since 4 PM on New Year’s Eve. Fortunately, it is a light, fluffy stuff. Got around 10″ at my place. Area wide anywhere from around 15″ down to 4-5″. However, did take me 3 times longer than the norm to get to work today.

Quick comment about poll numbers. I don’t pooh-pooh the poll numbers. Instead, I use them as motivation. Sure, maybe the actual numbers are higher, but then again, maybe not. We would be as blind as the GOP was in 2012 to totally dismiss them. The GOP just assumed they were wrong and didn’t do anything to really make up ground. Let’s use this as motivation going into this fall’s elections.

    • January 2, 2014 at 10:23 am

japa, I am not against all polls. However, I do not accept media sponsored polls (e.g., NBC/Rupert Murdoch-WSJ, CNN/WashPo, ABC/NYT, etc) because, I strongly believer they are created with a pre-defined outcome to manufacture a news narrative.

I could not disagree more. People are wise to not allow the corrupt msm to affect their perception of reality with polls designed to reinforce the msm created meme of PBO’s supposed horrible 2013. Polls in 2012 used outdated models that grossly underrepresented the Black anbBrown vote. Pollsters like Gallup destroyed its reputation to create polls that exaggerated Romney’s support. It is foolish to blindly accept anything the msm puts out. How many times does the media have to lie to you before you understand this unfortunate reality. In 2012 pollsters and pundits predicted PBO would lose the popular vote. Polls were and are used to support the msm’so products GOP propaganda.

      • January 2, 2014 at 11:11 am

Eric, I hope you don’t mind me use this as a quote on tweet: “People are wise to not allow the corrupt msm to affect their perception of reality with polls designed to reinforce the msm created meme of PBO’s supposed horrible 2013.”

Good morning everyone!! Happy Jan 2nd…my anniversary day!!! Hard to believe it’s been 33 years already….

Anyway, this is a short read, but the good part of this is this particular comment:

And now, what Democrats have to hammer home relentlessly to these millions of people and the rest to come, is that this is what the republicans want to take away. This. Your insurance. Yes, from you personally. Not from “those” people. From you.

The republicans want to take away those doctor visits, those preventive tests. They want the insurance company to be able to cancel your policy, yes, yours, because you have been sick before. You have a nice employer plan? They want to take that insurance away from your still struggling young adult child. They want to allow you care up to a certain dollar amount. After that, well, not their problem. They want to be able to raise premiums relentlessly, far beyond the average increase in wages or income.

The ACA/Obamacare is not some bad old monolithic boogy-boogy-boogyman socialistic Frankenstein monster lumbering across the country destroying all we hold dear.

It is not some abstract concept, born of the Muslim Brotherhood and the ghosts of Stalin and Mussolini, its diabolical intent solely to bring America to her knees.

It is you, being able to go to the doctor for an affordable price when you are sick. It is you being able to have the tests that will prevent you from getting sick in the first place. It is you, not having to file for bankruptcy due to medical expenses, dying anyway, and leaving your family destitute.

completely OT, but 57 needs to rant. I ask you, do I yell at my 74 year old husband when he’s on the roof, pushing 13 inches of snow off the roof? Or do I wait until he’s back in the house and then just hit him with a frying pan?

    Are all men this stupid?

He crawls out the window to get the roof. After waiting helplessly for about 10 minutes, my bichon/maltese mix Kasper comes running down the stairs. That means that little dog was up there, with the window open and could have decided at any point that he wanted to play with Daddy in the snow.

One of our best friends fell on New Year’s Eve and blew out his knee. But he thought it was a good idea to hobble down the basement stairs to get the hot chocolate mix! When he has an 8 and 15 year old who would have been happy to get it for him.

I ask again, are all men this STUPID?

Yes, men are stupido, think they’re indestructible.

Great article on that FAUX OUTRAGE about lightbulbs….

    http://business.time.com/2013/05/09/long-live-the-lightbulb/

This month, Ohio-based Advanced Lighting Technologies is releasing the Vybrant 2x, a 21st century incandescent powered by nanotechnology. It lasts twice as long as an old-fashioned Edison bulb and uses 50% less energy. It’s also just one-fourth the price of a Cree LED. Meanwhile, the top lighting manufacturers are all selling even cheaper incandescents that are not as efficient as Vybrants—much less LEDs—but use 25% less juice than older bulbs.

This all might sound confusing, because when Republicans denounce President Obama’s tyrannical left-wing ways, they often cite his “ban” on incandescent lightbulbs. Wasn’t he consigning us to a green dystopia full of expensive, curlicued bulbs that leak mercury and won’t dim? Wasn’t the ban a classic example, as House Energy and Commerce Committee chairman Fred Upton put it, of Big Government substituting its own judgment for the market’s?

In fact, there was never a ban on incandescent lightbulbs. There is a 2007 law—signed by President Bush—that requires all lightbulbs to meet gradually increasing energy-efficiency standards. As one of its sponsors noted, the law would “help preserve energy resources and reduce harmful emissions, all while saving American families billions of dollars on their electric bills.” Yep, that sponsor was Fred Upton. He later led a Tea Party–fueled effort to stop Obama from enforcing the new standards, but the lighting industry is already meeting them anyway.

H/T Mike Grunwald…and if you haven’t read his book, “The New New Deal” put it on your “to do list” for the New Year. Excellent!

NEW YORK (AP) — The Associated Press is asking Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio’s transition team to open his swearing-in ceremony to the news media.

De Blasio is to be sworn in by State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday at his Brooklyn home.

The ceremony will be streamed on NYC.gov. The transition team also plans to release photos.

The AP has a policy against using handout images unless they are of significant news value and shot in areas that the press doesn’t expect to have access to. The de Blasio team says past mayors have restricted access to such ceremonies, so there is precedent.

AP Senior Managing Editor Michael Oreskes says access to media should be provided. He notes that streaming the event means it isn’t private at all

Benghazi, Benghazi, Benghazi! Everyone here is so on the ball, someone probably posted this already, but it’s worth another mention.

    Coup and counter-coup in Washington

This year, a cabal of generals evidently believed it could secure the White House for Mitt Romney by staging the Benghazi incident and using it as the signal for a cold coup under cover of elections — probably including computer-generated election fraud — to bring down Obama. They guessed wrong.

Everything we know about Benghazi is conjecture. I must admit, I suspected some ind of inside hanky panky because I never bought the story about Petraeus’ sudden retirement and I watched as one high-ranking military man after another was quietly moved into retirement. Benghazi reminded me of what the Generals tried to do to Roosevelt.

And what they tried to do to Kennedy. I’m reading Dallas 1963 right now, and we are fortunate Kennedy had some control over Curtis LeMay and others. They wanted nuclear war with the USSR, using Cuba as a surrogate, even though they knew Krushchev would hit back at us. They thought one or two American cities were worth it. The framers of the Constitution were definitely correct giving the civilians checks over the military. DDE was rather unusual as a military man to warn against the military-industrial complex.

I read that long article, and there are no sources cited, which always concerns me. It sounds like some truths and some half truths and some speculation. We will one day entire story.

The book Dallas 1963 is sourced and has specific citations. It is a GREAT read. New this year. One takeaway so far…..Dallas was ruled like a medieval fiefdom until probably the 1980s.

          • January 3, 2014 at 2:35 am

I agree with both amk and you regarding the article, though I’m not certain how one validates information that is meant to be secret and/or distorted for public consumption. It took decades for the truth to surface regarding Roosevelt because politicians and the media were complicit in covering up the truth. Most probably the only reason sources can now be cited regarding Kennedy is because we now have the Freedom of Information Act. For me history and logical conclusion are always strong indicators, and both exist in spades when it comes to the Benghazi story. I also agree about DDE. He also had strong feelings about men involving themselves in decisions regarding women’s health and welfare, as well as the judicial system and income inequality. He might well have been the last decent Republican.

Many were annoyed with me when I said the President had no intention of bombing Syria, but my sense, based on his prior statements, was that he didn’t trust the Intel (though he couldn’t very well say that). Few noticed that he drew the “red line” and a few days later Syrians were suddenly dying of chemical poisoning or that Snowden surfaced a week after the President called on Congress to curtail the war powers of the President. In fact the NSA story is old news that was first exposed way back in 2003 and the truth is, we’ve learned nothing new. So why?

Regarding Dallas 1963…I received it as a Christmas gift and put it on the shelf. Thanks to your fine review, I’ll crack the cover now. :)

The Media’s Year In Health Care Coverage

2013 will be remembered as the year of health care policy. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) dominated media outlets across the spectrum, especially following the implementation of the law’s health care exchanges in October. Yet often lost in all the noise was factual reporting on the new law. Much right-wing and even mainstream media coverage pushed misleading, hyperbolic, and outright false attacks about the ACA.

While channel surfing, there was a Governor on MSNBC (repug) stating how bad ACA is and he will not accept any monies for the expansion. 20% of his state (6 million plus) are uninsured, and many would qualify for Medicaid. He says no; bad for the state because of rising cost. Lots of BS why he will not accept it. This is sad and criminal. HOW in America, we would deny people health care who can not afford it? We spend billions in manufactured wars by the repukes; lives are lost and families are devastated, and these nasty mean, President hating repukes will not take care of the people in their states. WHY is America not in an uproar? These are real human beings and these nasty repukes will not allow them to have a chance to have health care. I wanted to throw a chair at this clown for his ignorance. Democrats must vote these repukes out of office.

    http://money.cnn.com/2014/01/02/news/companies/duck-dynasty-guns/index.html?hpt=hp_t3

The family-owned business at the center of the hit TV show “Duck Dynasty” has launched its own line of guns.
The gunmaker Mossberg has teamed with Duck Commander, the company owned by “Duck Dynasty’s” Robertson clan, to release nine different shotguns, as well as two semiautomatic rifles and a semiautomatic pistol.

Mossberg has begun shipping some of the shotguns to distributors, according to spokeswoman Linda Powell. She declined to name specific retailers that will carry them.
Duck Commander was founded 40 years ago by Phil Robertson, the family patriarch who was recently suspended — and then reinstated — by A&E after making controversial remarks about gay people and African-Americans. He and his sons are featured prominently in four video ads for the new guns on Mossberg’s web site. Phil narrates one of the spots saying, “Do you know what makes me happy ladies and gentlemen? To blow a mallard drake’s head smooth off.”

    There you have it.

You are exactly correct rikyrah. If Snowden were Black or Hispanic the “national conversation” would not be on civil liberties and NSA abuses – it would be on the so-called follies of Affirmative Action and the need for complete elimination of race-based hiring decisions. NY Times would NOT ask to grant Snowden clemency, but instead call for a review of ALL credentials of individuals (esp. minorities) hired by the Federal government. You would not see Snowden’s face all over metrobuses in DC saying “Thanks Snowden.” And some of the same self-professed “civil libertarians” on Twitter and in the corporate media would be silent – or probably vocally pro-NSA – especially if the President were white.

Stay with him, be with him, walk beside him, and there will be no turning back to Darkness, ever again on this planet. But he cannot do it alone, he needs every single one of us to stay attuned and focussed, and to not allow evil or hatred to touch us in any way. Okay? Love y’all!
