    • January 3, 2014 at 8:06 am

Yes! They’ve taken full responsibility and are getting it fixed soon – phew! The ‘middle man’ fella I mentioned before is still suggesting the blame was 50-50, even though their flippin’ trees caused it, but the people themselves are fine, admitted their trees were rotting and should have been tended to. So all’s good, and after Danny stole a third flower pot from their garden, they seem quite eager to get it done quickly-ish.

Was very surprised to learn of it too this morning. Apparently, NY’s population is fueled mainly by NYC – international immigrants and younger adults (20-44).

          January 3, 2014 at 8:41 am

FL’s population does skew very old, so New York and other states are sending the “older” ones south and keeping the younger. That means more costs to Florida and more productive workers for New York. This has become a serious problem in PA, which is graying, ie. seriously aging, by the day. A population that skews old is an uncertain future. The only new energy in Pa is the growing Latino population in the south east. I asked one of our many governor candidates about this and he had no real answer as to why PA wasn’t keeping its young people and attracting young families. This used to be a vibrant state back in the day and now it slowing sinking into the horizon.

    Maryland is on the move.

Thousands of immigrants living here without legal permission will start the new year demonstrating skills in parallel parking and two-point turns in hopes of becoming licensed drivers in Maryland.

Maryland joins a handful of states on Jan. 1 that issue so-called “second-tier” licenses that allow immigrants who do not have full legal documentation to drive on Maryland roads, register cars and obtain insurance. The licenses will not suffice as federal identification.

Nearly 13,000 immigrants have signed up to take driving tests in the coming weeks, according to state officials.

While nothing like Roberta’s cold in MN, it’s ten freaking degrees here and the snow fell most of yesterday and through the night. Had a scary skid yesterday as I was coming back from an errand just as the snow started. If you don’t have to drive today, please DON’T. I hope PBO soaks up enough sunshine to last him through the bleak DC winter. Chips, I’m glad you have good neighbors who take responsibility for things and bravo to Danny who was just doing his part in the negotiations.

Sounds like my neck of the woods, jackie. It was 12 this morning and snowed continually through Wednesday and Thursday. There’s been very little plowing so the roads are slow and slushy/slippery. I’m gearing up to go to school and clean up in preparation for the children coming on Monday, but I’m really dawdling. There are supposed to be more cold temps and more snow on Sunday!

      Africa,
There is so much good news about ObamaCares, and the media is still spinning it. This morning on GMA, in the “news segment” it is now being said; recently covered individuals will drive up health insurance cost because they are likely to go to the ER, now that they are insured. First, they drove up cost because they were uninsured and now they will be the ones to drive up cost because they are insured. The media will not quick peddling their lies and hatred for our awesome President. All of this is now based on some type of study. Give me a freaking break. HAPPY FRIDAY!!!

Papa John’s, Applebee’s And Others Pay Huge Price For Anti-Obamacare Politicking

    By Rick Ungar

    ——————————–

It turns out that being a good corporate citizen is as important to selling pizzas as the thinness of the crust or the quality of the cheese.

If you don’t believe it, just ask Papa John CEO, John Schnatter.

As covered—and criticized—in this column in great detail, Mr. Schnatter decided to mix his politics with his pepperoni when suggesting that he would be cutting the work hours for Papa John employees in order to bring them below the 30 hour per week threshold that would require Schnatter to provide his employees with healthcare benefits.
    .
    .
Hopefully, other businesses seeking to avoid their responsibilities under the healthcare law—such as Walmart who intends to cut back employee hours in the effort to push workers onto Medicaid rolls rather than take responsibility for their employees’ health care—will get the message.

Papa John’s Schnatter Says He Will Honor Obamacare And Give Health Insurance To All Employees

      money quote

It turns out, the pizza eating public did not approve.

Indeed, so serious was the reaction that Schnatter was forced to publish an op-ed piece where he sought to convince us that he never really intended to cut back worker hours but had simply been speculating on what he might do in response to the legislation.

According to YouGov BrandIndex, a leading marketing survey that measures brand perception in the marketplace (called “Buzz”), Papa John’s had good reason for concern as the pizza chain’s brand identity has plummeted from a high of 32 on election day, to a remarkably low score of 4 among adults who have eaten at causal dining restaurants during the past month.

      Ouch.

Papa John is not alone in his anti-Obamacare misery.

Fast food server, Applebee’s, possessed a healthy Buzz score of 35 before Zane Terkel, CEO of one of the company’s largest franchisees, appeared on television to complain about the law and to announce that he would not be building more restaurants or hiring any more workers in response to his objections to Obamacare.

      Applebee’s “pre-Terkel” Buzz score of 35 now sits at a pathetic 5.

      • 71 hopefruit2
        January 3, 2014 at 9:04 am

Yet the dishonest media kept telling us over and over how “unpopular” Obamacare was. If that were true these companies would see their “Buzz” scores skyrocket after denouncing the law.

Kinda chuckled at AP’s desperate anti-Obamacare story for today——that it is difficult to add a new baby to policies. Gee, I wonder if that will ever be worked out, and the AP has reached the end of the line in its anti-Obamacare efforts.

  24. 74 dotster3
    January 3, 2014 at 8:59 am

And speaking of new babies, I wonder if the newborn baby, Krimson Tyde, was sad about Alabama’s loss in the Sugar Bowl last night. (haha dumb Al. alum Joe Scarborough). And why do parents do that to their poor kids, saddle them with a name like that, so ripe for derisive teasing?

I forgot to mention – amid all this heat – there is tennis being played in my town. Watched a little this evening – the players clothes were soaked. Lead in to the Australian Open – not a lot of big names – but my favorite Roger Federer won his quarter final 6:1, 6:1 – looking cool while his opponent swam around the court & I think many of you follow Sarina – she won her semi final 6:2, 7:6

And the interviewer looked so serious and nodded his head, agreeing that this small reduction in pension was really an increase!! They will never call them out – this is how the GOP moves more and more to the right – little by little.

I didn’t know where he was from – I just couldn’t believe what I was hearing so I clicked away – from what you say – I heard it right.

Dear Donald Trump: Winter Does Not Disprove Global Warming

    By Chris Mooney

    —————————

Finally, just one last thing. When it’s winter on Earth, it’s also summer on Earth…somewhere else. Thus, allow us to counter anecdotal evidence about cold weather with more anecdotal evidence: It’s blazing hot in Australia, with temperatures, in some regions, set to possibly soar above 120 degrees Fahrenheit in the coming days.

LH, I thought Al Gore explained this beautifully at a hearing once-he said the planet is sick, it has a fever. That means that it’s sometimes very hot and sometimes very chilly. I thought that even a child could understand that analogy, but it must have been too difficult for Trump.

      • 81 Obama Grandmama
        January 3, 2014 at 3:52 pm

The name of Global Warming itself reminds me of a newspaper heading that is misleading. Many never read beyond the heading and take their interpretation of that heading for the news instead of the content which sometimes proves to be the opposite of the heading implication. Donald Trump, the GOP, and the corporate media know this tendency and use it to sway the great number of people too lazy to try to understand an issue.

      A NATIONAL EMBARRASSMENT

Cantor readies yet another anti-ACA vote

      By Steve Benen

      ———————————-

Senate Democrats and the White House are focusing primarily on extending federal unemployment benefits, helping struggling families keep their heads above water while giving the economy a boost. Indeed, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) will bring a temporary extension to the floor early next week and the White House is lobbying in support of the bill.

GOP leaders in the lower chamber have a very different priority.
      .
      .
The House Republican health care agenda is, in other words, predicated on ham-fisted demagoguery.

It’s a national embarrassment, or at least it would be if GOP lawmakers were still capable of shame.

Linda, I think that’s her interviewing style. She knows the answer but wants to give the interviewee the opportunity to fully explain. She doesn’t see me to have an agenda – either right or left in her interviews which I actually prefer. Anyway, Mr. Sloan gave some good info on the current situation there and what to expect – it looks promising.

    • 91 forus50
      January 3, 2014 at 9:36 am

Great, great article meta. Thank you for posting it. Judy Woodruff would actually be a good replacement for David Gregory on MTP but she probably doesn’t want it. I am highlighting a portion of this.
      ///
CLIFF SLOAN: Well, Judy, as you know, in May, the president gave a speech at the National Defense University.

And he strongly reiterated and renewed his commitment to close Guantanamo. And he’s been very committed to closing it from the beginning. And in this speech, he said, we were going to move forward on transfers, we were going to move forward on closing the facility.

He announced the appointment of special envoys at the State Department and the Defense Department who would be focused and moving forward on closure. I started the beginning of July. Paul Lewis, my counterpart at the Defense Department, started in November. And so we are moving full-speed ahead. ////

      AND

      ///
JUDY WOODRUFF: So, of the 155 left, you said 70-some are cleared for — how long is it going to take to get those detainees out of the country to a new location?

CLIFF SLOAN: Well, I can’t give you an exact time frame, but what I can tell you is, we are working just as hard as we can. We are moving forward as aggressively as we can.

As you mentioned, nine were transferred in the month of December alone, 11 in the last couple of months. We are working very hard on all those approved for transfer. But the other point that I want to make which is also very important is, the 79 who are not approved for transfer, we have also started a new administrative process for them, a new hearing, where they have the opportunity to show that they now should be approved for transfer. They get a fresh look.

And that’s important as well in moving forward.

JUDY WOODRUFF: So it’s — so they may not necessarily stay at Guantanamo, because right now it looks as if you have got several dozen of them who are — who will be there indefinitely?

CLIFF SLOAN: Well, they — as I said, we have 79 who are not approved for transfer. Eight of those are facing criminal charges. So, of the remaining 71, they now will have this new administrative hearing.

That’s already started. That’s going to accelerate on a rolling basis, and that is going to be very important in moving forward.

      /////

We all know that once he sets a goal POTUS NEVER.GIVES.UP. I will be so damn glad when that illegal hellhole of a prison is forever closed. Looks like it might happen in 2014.

      • January 3, 2014 at 9:52 am

Good morning TOD ~ Happy Snow Day :) My son thinks he’s hit the jackpot here in Maryland.. with these snow days for a couple of inches of snow. Ten years in ND- and we literally had 3 snow days due to blizzard one year.

Opened my front door a bit ago to let the pooch out, and shovel a bit of snow… and lo and behold there was a pigeon sitting smack up against the front door. Luckily the dog raced out so quickly he never even noticed the bird. I’m pretty sure he’s alive, just very cold. Have put him in a box with towels on the front porch.. but wonder if I should bring him in. Anyhoo, my wee dilemma of the day ;)

Just learned that a minor miracle occurred yesterday in our Republican majority county. We are ‘overseen’ by a group of three county commissioners and because of the R majority, two of them are Rs and one D. The chair has always been an R. For years we had two old misogynist men who treated the female D with open disrespect and contempt, even though she is and has been the hardest working and smartest of them all. Despite this, she persevered, kept her head down and did serious work for the county. Finally they retired and two other Rs took their place. For two years, they followed the old path and chose one of themselves to be chairman, even though the D female has years more experience. Yesterday, enlightenment struck and for the first time in anyone’s memory, they chose a DEM as chair and openly acknowledged the greater experience and wisdom of not only a D, but a female. I checked to see if the earth was still rotating on its axis and all seemed well. Could this be a harbinger? Are some people actually waking up?

:) good question. As I understand it, it’s so they aren’t obligated to provide health insurance that includes an option for free birth control for their non-nun employees. I thought churches and religious organizations were already exempted. http://www.littlesistersofthepoor.org/placeforyou/employment

As I understand it, it was about the employees of a home run by Little Sisters of the Poor, said they couldn’t afford to cover birth control for their employees and it went against their religious beliefs. This could be troublesome as I can imagine a million more operations like this lining up if this ban is granted.

The other contraception case at the high court

      By Steve Benen

      ————————————————-

At first blush, it appeared the Affordable Care Act’s policy on contraception suffered a serious setback on New Year’s Eve, at the hands of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Indeed, the Associated Press’ headline that night suggested the entire birth-control mandate had been “delayed” by the high court just hours before it was scheduled to take effect.

But that’s not quite what happened.

Rather, Sotomayor granted a routine, temporary stay to a handful of Roman Catholic non-profit organizations seeking an exemption from the contraception policy. The Obama administration will respond by tomorrow and the litigation will continue. As Irin Carmon reported:

Morning all:) Sipping coffee and catching up here…So sorry to hear about the bone chilling and dangerous cold weather back east….everyone stay safe…and watch those indoor space heaters if you have them…seems to me, if you use them for extra warmth, you really need to keep a good eye on them. I remember many stories of fires because people were cold and careless with them….just be safe and don’t go out unless you have to. Be careful shoveling all that snow, too!

Meanwhile..99 is having a hotter than normal summer down under…and it’s warmer here than I remember for Jan….beautiful weather here…right in that target area that someone mentioned upthread…70-80. Perfect. Be safe everyone and Happy Friday.

GM all TODvillians. Cold Chicago reporting in. Actually, it is about +2 right now, so almost balmy. Tomorrow will be 29, a veritable heat wave. Then the bottom drops out. Monday high of -10 and low 0f -17. With 20 MPH winds could see wind chills of -50.

Global warming my a–. And of course that is said in jest. Hasn’t been this cold here in years, though.

I lived in Buffalo, NY in 1977……we still had mounds of snow in April and May of that year because it had been piled up so high in it took forever to melt.
