Early Bird Chat

The White House blanketed in snow after a snowstorm on the morning of Feb. 3, 2010 (Photo by Pete Souza) – sounds like the First Family will face a similar scene when they return to DC tomorrow (they leave Hawaii tonight). Brrrr.

GooOOOood MooOOOoorrrning, Ms Chips! You are torturing me – couldn’t you find another sunny Hawaii picture to take our minds off winter. No point in sending the Obamas mind back into the cold a minute before that is absolutely necessary! Tut.. Tut.

Good morning Ms. Chips, Danny and TOD Family.

Cubans have reacted with shock after foreign-made cars went on sale for the first time since the 1959 revolution at what some termed “crazy” prices.

The state has a monopoly on new cars and is marking up prices 400% or more.

A Peugeot 508 costing £32,000 ($53,000) in the UK is listed at $262,000. State salaries average about $20 a month.

Freeing up car sales is the latest in a series of reforms in Communist-run Cuba. The requirement for a permit to buy new vehicles has been abolished.

However, only a minority will benefit.

A Peugeot 508 at $262,000?! Peugeot? A Peugeot of all things? Not one of the most sought after cars in the world. That’s highway robbery.

    Good Morning…….

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Sen. Rand Paul says he is filing suit against the Obama administration over the data-collection policies of the National Security Agency. And on his website, he’s urging Americans to join the lawsuit, in his words, “to stop Barack Obama’s NSA from snooping on the American people.”

In an interview Friday night on the Fox News show “Hannity,” the Kentucky Republican says he believes everyone in the U.S. with a cellphone would be eligible to join the suit as a class action.

Paul says that people who want to join the suit are telling the government that it can’t have access to emails and phone records without permission or without a specific warrant.

Paul says the lead lawyer in the suit is Virginia’s former attorney general, Ken Cuccinelli.

    —-

    The Cooch ? How funny…….

The Supreme Court has ruled against class actions lawsuits more than once recently saying that ” Individuals ” must sue on their own.

Of course…Rand does not believe in the Supreme Court either. Also…good luck getting the DC Federal court to even look at this…..now that PBO has ” packed the court “

The lies that the media spread again and again – if they told the truth PBO’s approval would be around 95%

I hate their lies, 99ts, but I don’t truly mind that PBO is not showing a 95% approval, because sure enough if he were there’d be many wrapping themselves in an increased frenzy to damage his brand.

I can’t remember Bibi doing anything positive vis-a-vis peace (or anything showing good character or joy) since he’s gotten into the public’s eye. Can you?

Morning, TOD fam. Heavy heart this morning; on my way to funeral of 24 yr old who died of a heart attack the day after Christmas. Carlos was such a good young man, had a smile and personality that lit up the world. He’s going to be so so missed in our community…

{{{{Alycee}}}} Always seems so sad when a young person dies of a heart attack – so unexpected. I’m sure his family appreciate the love that your community obviously has for Carlos.

Raleigh, N.C. — The state Department of Health and Human Services mailed nearly 49,000 Medicaid cards to the wrong people, the agency announced Friday evening. The cards show the child’s name, Medicaid ID number, date of birth and primary care physician.

DHHS was trying to issue new cards to 70,253 children who were switched from the N.C. Health Choice program to Medicaid due to new eligibility rules. But more than half of the cards – 48,752 – went to the wrong Medicaid recipients.

Reed is co-sponsoring the legislation with GOP Senator Dean Heller, and Reid is lobbying both Republican and Democratic Senators to support the bill, but no GOP Senator other than Heller has publicly come out for it.

Asked whether he had lined up any other Republican Senators to support it, Reed declined to answer directly. “We’re getting people sincerely saying they’re thinking very seriously about this,” Reed said about his GOP colleagues.

Reed noted that a number of GOP Senators represent high unemployment states. If the 55 Dem-aligned Senators vote for an extension, which isn’t assured but is very likely, Dems need five Republicans.

    ///

so the 60 votes bs again? Didn’t the dems get rid of that bs?

    • 53 Linda
      January 4, 2014 at 8:44 am

They only got rid of it for nominees, not legislation.

    • 55 99ts
      January 4, 2014 at 8:45 am

I will never understand why unemployment has to be extended. In my world you receive unemployment until you get a job. How do members of congress expect these folks to survive? Rhetorical question – those that vote against the extension don’t want people to survive.

Someone should explain to the GOP the relationship between crime and poverty. They have pushed the country so far that people need to steal to eat.

I truly cannot believe that a major political party of the US hates its own citizens in this fashion

      • 56 Linda
        January 4, 2014 at 8:59 am

The GOP believes in American ” Exceptionalism ” Key part is ” Except ”

        Except for the poor
        Except for women
        Except for minorities
Except for those with the wrong religion
Except for ” The Gays ”
        Except for Union members….

        etc.
        etc.

      • January 4, 2014 at 9:00 am

My sentiments, exactly. Though I never understood why the unemployment extension was not part of the budget negotiation. Seems a little silly to me to try to get a compromise from hostage-takers after the fact.

The democrats in congress negotiate on GOP terms – rather sad that PBO always has to be personally involved for the GOP to get a reality check

Well, my two hours are up. Got to go eat and get ready to hit the road. BBL; sooner I hope.

Have yourselves a marvelous Saturday, wherever you are!

BTW, Dudette, what are you up to? I haven’t seen you in the last couple of days – you didn’t win the millions and are trying to keep them to yourself, did you?

    Bye!

Well, this is a shocking revelation. :) It bothers me tremendously that so few writers ever mention the fact that voters have always had to identify themselves, since the right was first granted. There were simply different forms of identification that were acceptable.

I was a big Everly brothers fan – this was my favorite – through the 60s – despite it was a 50s song!

g’nite everyone – enjoy the music

I was a big Everly Bros. fan too—–had all their ’45s. My sis and I used to pretend to be the Everly Sisters and spent hours singing along.

I saw on a previous thread that you check responses to your posts here, so I’m hoping you’ll see this, 8 hours later.

      LOVED the Everly Brothers.

My Mother told me that I would dance and sing this song incessantly (judging by the year of this video, I must have been 3 years old — I don’t remember doing so).

I was sad that they were eclipsed in popularity by The Beatles — who I LOVED too — I’ve told the tale here on TOD that less than 3 months after JFK’s assassination, our 5th grade teacher engaged us in a spirited discussion of The Beatles’ appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, 50 years ago next month. I think even the young’uns know how influential the Beatles were to America, the world, the 1960s.

But even so, I remember listening and swooning in my room by myself when I was in High School, listening to The Everly Brothers — loved “All I Have to Do Is Dream” and “Devoted to You.”

I also recall being at an outdoor picnic that also had a jukebox when I was a teenager, and someone had “Cathy’s Clown” on continuous replay — I think that’s what prompted me to purchase the “oldies but goodies” Everly Brothers LP, cause I really hadn’t thought about them before.

Now my favorite showman is Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day) — he and Norah Jones released “Foreverly” in late November 2013, which is a heartfelt and respectful homage to the early Everly Brothers and their amazing harmony.

Rest in Peace, Phil Everly. You and Don have secured your rightful place in American Music history.

I love hearing other folks memories of the 50s/60s – thank you so much for sharing. I liked the beatles but I think I liked the Everly songs more.
