Yup, Voter ID Laws Have Nothing to Do With Fraud

    ——————————————————

New research confirms what was obvious: Republican voter identification laws are purely partisan power plays, targeted at groups that vote for Democrats.

Good morning, 99. Wasn’t it you who mentioned yesterday that in your country the Right’s craziness is finding prominence? In the last thread, I commented that in the past month, I’ve been in 6 countries. Every English-speaking major news network carries that disgusting familiar logo – Fox News! Next up – CNN.

This morning I turned to a network that claims unbiased review. I thought, “oh goody”. The announcer said he was going to discuss Benghazi with a leading authority. After commercial break, he introduced Muslim hate activist, Pam Gellar! They’re everywhere!!

RWNJ senator is trying to make abortion the issue of the day – sigh

I replied to you at the end of the last thread :)

        • January 7, 2014 at 8:04 am

Shouldn’t have gone back and read your response. :) That’s depressing!

As for the Senator and the abortion issue…they’re just wasting time. Couldn’t defeat President Obama righteously, so they plan to simply idle away his presidency.

          • 31 99ts
            January 7, 2014 at 8:23 am

O gosh – I didn’t mean to depress – governments are regularly defeated here when they try and make laws related to abortion – a few years ago took a couple to court for “importing” the morning after pill. The jury threw the charge out very quickly.

With luck our current PM will only last 1 term – he has no clue as to what he is doing – economically it is not good.

Cold Weather Doesn’t Disprove Global Warming. Global Warming is Why It’s So Damn Cold.

    By Bob Cesca

    ————————–

If you’d like to see the heads of your denialist friends explode like that guy from Scanners, tell them about the polar vortex.

Ironically, and based upon pure climate science, the extreme cold temperatures strafing North America and causing embarrassing shrinkage from Montana to Boston is very likely caused by global warming. But how can this be? Global warming is supposed to mean everything is getting warmer. My cat smells like cat-food.
    .
    .
Simply put: the Arctic’s weather has slipped out of place and now resides over the U.S. and Canada.

    ————————————–

    • January 7, 2014 at 7:53 am

Ladyhawke, we know how stupid they are. Can’t say global “warming” and then say that’s the reason it’s so cold. They’re stupid!!!!!

    • 37 jackiegrumbacher
      January 7, 2014 at 7:56 am

LH, you speak facts, which is an alien language to climate deniers. It doesn’t matter what the truth is, they won’t believe it because the corporations that control the media won’t allow them do. They have labelled science “liberal” and therefore untrue. I think it’s an even bet whether this planet suffers most from climate change or abject stupidity.

Yesterday the idiot R Congressman from district 6, Jim Gerlach, announced he wasn’t running next year. This guy was touted as a “moderate” and won the support of some Dems in 2012 against a really progressive Democratic candidate–BIG MISTAKE! This is a 51 percent R district, but one of the Casey brothers lives there as well as one of the most popular candidates running for PA governor, Katy McKinty. If either of these candidates runs, they will win. Please throw some prayers and best wishes PA way–a pick up here and some probable ones in the Phillie area gets us closer to our goal.

    http://crooksandliars.com/2014/01/study-polarization-and-gridlock-work-well

a study published last November in The Journal of Politics suggests that this sorry state of affairs is good news for a small group of Americans at the top of the economic pile. “Washington gridlock helps the super-rich stay rich, and get richer,” says Thomas Volscho, a sociologist at the City University of New York and one of the authors of the study. “And the richer they get, the more the gridlock actually helps them.”

The researchers looked back over 70 years of data, and found that the more dysfunctional Washington is, the bigger the share of the pie the top one percent tends to grab. And most importantly, they also found that when economic inequality is high, the kind of polarization and gridlock that have been the hallmark of Washington since Barack Obama’s election make legislative efforts to change course all-but-impossible.

Try -16 and -40 wind chill last night. It is now -9 wc -29 We are actually supposed to get to +1 tonight back to the deep freeze of -16. Our cold spell is supposed to break Wednesday night. fingers crossed. Everybody keep warn.

          January 7, 2014 at 10:23 am

That was Chicago yesterday as well. In the suburbs it got down to -48 WC.

It’s a balmy -9 in my backyard right now. I went out this morning to start digging out of my garage. I was fine except for my hands (it was -12 then). I then layered a thin glove under my regular glove and I was able to function. I have a great down coat so until my toes got cold and the cold penetrated through both layers of gloves, I got about halfway down the snow pack. Hubby and I will take turns until we can get the car out.

Until it snows again tomorrow and the next day.

Hey, I went through the worst sustained winters in the late 70′s and 1982-1983. Let’s just say, it’s a whole lot harder when you’re 30+ years older.

          • January 7, 2014 at 10:51 am

I went downstairs this morning to get my mail (don’t worry, it’s indoors) wearing a coat. One of my neighbors was bundled up and took off work-she was only walking her dog, which doesn’t go very far. Believe me, I needed my coat just standing in the hallway. My caretakers’ windshield wipers wouldn’t move. Of course, I scurried upstairs right after the short conversation was over.

I try to block the drafts in my 95 year old house as best I can. I just reached down to pick up a dog bowl from the living room and the bowl was freezing! My poor babies – I didn’t realize how cold it was close to the ground! No wonder they all love being under the sofa by the heat register.

My Kasper, although he’s little, has sheep-like fur and he’s usually willing to withstand the cold. Not the last few days: His little legs freeze up and I have to carry him in the house, even if he’s only been out for a minute or two. Even my good quality doggie coats don’t do anything for their little bare paws.

And no, booties don’t work. They hate them.

              • January 7, 2014 at 11:03 am

37andfemale, that’s bad. I feel for the poor dogs. They have to go out no matter what the weather and right now it’s bad. BTW, do you use plastic over the windows?

                • 53 57andfemale
                  January 7, 2014 at 11:13 am

The windows aren’t bad – it’s the drafts at the front door and the door to the sunporch. I always think I have everything blocked pretty well but you can still feel the drafts, particularly if it’s a North wind, since that’s the exposure.

-14 in Chgoland today, expected to rise to single digits above zero—-whee! Just heard it was so cold the Lincoln Park Zoo had to move their polar bears inside—–that’s cold! Everything still closed, lots of stranded motorists and amtrak passengers. Southern Illinois bball team’s bus slid off the road into a snowdrift where they sat for 5 hours until rescued and moved to a church for overnight. Lots of roads closed in Indiana, the whole stretch from Chgo to LaFayette (Purdue) closed—–and south of Indy passengers in 375 cars had to be rescued by heavy military vehicles. And Indy still has people without power, some now for 48 hours, due to heavy snow and ice complicating repair efforts. Read about one lady who wouldn’t leave her 3 cats in her home yesterday even tho temp in home had reached 42 degrees. Ready for the Polar Vortex to exit-tex.

That idiot IN governor, Mike Pence, telling the good citizens of IN to ‘use common sense.’ Here’s an idea, you RWNJ: how about joining the modern world and take care of your effing roads?!?! IN is the thoroughfare from the East to the Midwest – take some Republican responsibility (snark) and collect some effing taxes and make your roads passable.

This stretch is always being shut down because IN has no snow removal or salting to speak of.

I heard on the news last night about a semi-completed subdivision in Merrillville, IN. The city is not responsible for it yet, the developer is in control of the subdivision and had no plans to plow people out. The people living there are stranded. I bet they all voted for RWNJ’s and bragged about their low taxes.

    OK, then!!!

    • 85 Linda
      January 7, 2014 at 9:08 am

Spreading ” misinformation ” is A-OK with Dr. Paul

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Rand Paul was talking with University of Louisville medical students when one of them tossed him a softball. “The majority of med students here today have a comprehensive exam tomorrow. I’m just wondering if you have any last-minute advice.” (Steve Brodner)

“Actually, I do,” said the ophthalmologist-turned-senator, who stays sharp (and keeps his license) by doing pro bono eye surgeries during congressional breaks. “I never, ever cheated. I don’t condone cheating. But I would sometimes spread misinformation. This is a great tactic. Misinformation can be very important.”

He went on to describe studying for a pathology test with friends in the library. “We spread the rumor that we knew what was on the test and it was definitely going to be all about the liver,” he said. “We tried to trick all of our competing students into over-studying for the liver” and not studying much else.

“So, that’s my advice,” he concluded. “Misinformation works.”

      http://www.nationaljournal.com/magazine/the-truthiness-of-rand-paul-20131017

Also he lied in that article about this:

“Under Obamacare and the current evolution of things, we have 18,000 diagnostic codes. We’re going to 144,000 diagnostic codes,” Paul told them. It wasn’t the first time he had implied that the number of codes—complete with seemingly absurd categories for injuries from macaws, lampposts, and burning water skis—was exploding as a result of the Affordable Care Act.

It’s not easy for those of us in the DC area. We are use to cold temps in the 20′s or 30′s but single digit temps here are unbearable for us. I couldn’t live in those parts of the country that endure this for 3-5 months out of the year.

Coldest it gets in my part of the world is about 40F – in the depths of winter. I lived in an area of higher altitude in college – but we only got below freezing a few days each year

  36. January 7, 2014 at 9:22 am

Good morning, TOD. It is currently 40 here in Clearwater, FL and will drop to freezing overnight. Still warmer than most places in the country but I hope the snowbirds brought some winter clothing. That wind off the bay and the gulf is bone chilling at these temps. One of the byproducts of dangerously cold weather is that so many people are forced indoors sometimes for long periods of time. If your heating systems work, you won’t freeze, but there’s still the likelihood of depression and cabin fever–the sense of literally being imprisoned behind four walls. And all the exercise people normally get from being out and about gets curtailed. So the trick is to keep your spirits up and try to do some workouts to keep muscles working and blood flowing. I vote for lots of photos of the first family throughout the day to cheer those confined to quarters by the weather. Any seconds?
