Steve Benen: December job totals disappoint

…. The new report from Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the U.S. economy added only 74,000 jobs in December, far below economists’ expectations. The unemployment rate dropped to 6.7% – its lowest point since October 2008 – but that appears largely to be the result of people dropping out of the workforce.

…. this is an initial estimate, which will be revised twice more, and may end up looking far less discouraging than it does right now. Indeed, the revisions from October and November showed an additional 38,000 U.S. jobs that had been previously unreported.

…. For congressional Republicans to undermine the economy on purpose by cutting off extended unemployment benefits makes it that much more difficult for the job market to return to where it needs to be.

All told, so far in calendar year 2013, the economy added 2.18 million jobs, while the private sector alone created 2.21 million jobs.

Steve Benen: Putting 2013 job totals in context

December’s job totals were clearly a bitter disappointment, but now that we have 12 months of job data, we can ask a different question: how did 2013 shape up?

In all, the U.S. economy added 2.186 million jobs last year, while the private sector created 2.213 million. Looking back over the last couple of decades, that means when it comes to the overall economy, 2013 was the best year for jobs in the United States since 2005 and the second best year since 1999.

That’s right: last year, the economy created more jobs than seven of the eight years Bush/Cheney was in office….

Brian Beutler: Most important political news this week: New report kills GOP’s radical agenda

Christie and the bridge is big. But Obamacare driving down healthcare inflation is even bigger. Here’s why.

The furthest-reaching political news of the week has nothing to do with who clogged the George Washington Bridge or what Robert Gates thinks of Barack Obama’s completely justifiable skepticism of David Petraeus and the war in Afghanistan.

It came in a seemingly boring actuarial report from a government agency most people probably have never of, showing that for the first time since the 1990s, total U.S. healthcare spending grew at a slower rate than the U.S. economy at the beginning of the current decade.

This sounds like the kind of thing only wonks and other nerds care about, which is probably why it didn’t become a #hashtag meme on Twitter or whatever, but the implications of the great healthcare spending slowdown are vast, and have thus reignited a long-simmering academic and ideological debate over whether, and to what extent, Obamacare deserves credit.

Paul Krugman: The Medicaid Cure

Something really interesting is happening on the health-care front: costs are rising much less rapidly than anyone expected. This is good news for the budget; it’s also good news for Obamacare. There was much skepticism about promises that health reform would “bend the curve”, reducing cost growth; well, the curve is bending, and it’s likely that the cost control measures that are part of Obamacare (and have been in effect for several years) are part of the reason.

One thing I haven’t seen mentioned much, however, is that another aspect of recent developments — the rapid rise in Medicaid enrollment, despite Republican efforts to block it — adds to the prospect of continuing good news on health costs.

Greg Sargent: Steve Beshear: Don’t fear the politics of Obamacare, Dems

The rollout of Obamacare in Kentucky may represent the most interesting experiment in the politics of health care in the country right now. Dem governor Steve Beshear is perhaps the most outspoken defender of the Affordable Care Act in the south. This, in a deep red state where the reform known as “Obamacare” is deeply unpopular; where the leading foe of the President’s agenda is on the ballot this year; and where the need for reform is urgent.

In an interview today, Beshear offered fellow Dems — red state and otherwise — some startling advice: Stand up for Obamacare because it’s the right thing to do. What’s more, Beshear insists, Republicans are wrong: the health law will be a political positive for Dems next fall.

“We’re doing the right thing,” Beshear told me. “That’s the most important point here. The people of America, and the people of Kentucky, deserve access to affordable health care. For the first time in the history of this country, we have a tool that allows us to accomplish this goal.”

LA Times: Remember the deficit? It’s melting

The capital may be enduring a brief spell of record-low temperatures this week, but the federal deficit continues to melt away.

According to the latest figures from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, the red ink for the first quarter of fiscal 2014, which began Oct. 1, dropped by almost 40% compared with the same period a year earlier.

The deficit has gone down so much that the federal government actually ran a surplus for December — a one-time occurrence that resulted from some special circumstances but still an indicator of the rapidly improving state of the government’s finances.

The Wire: The Four Key Questions Chris Christie Didn’t Answer at His Press Conference

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie held a lengthy press conference on Thursday aimed at answering questions about his administration’s involvement in the sudden decision to close traffics lanes in the town of Fort Lee last September. But a number of critical questions went unanswered.

Background: The closure of most of the on-ramp lanes leading to the George Washington Bridge between New Jersey and New York the week of September 9 meant a massive traffic back-ups in Fort Lee, slowing emergency vehicles (with dangerous effect) and delaying commuters. The town’s mayor, Mark Sokolich, wrote a letter on Thursday of that week, suggesting the closures were punitive.

At the time, two Christie appointees ran the Port Authority’s New Jersey arm, both of whom have resigned. One, David Wildstein, had his emails subpoenaed, revealing that Bridget Anne Kelly, deputy chief of staff to Christie, told him shortly before the traffic change that it was “time for traffic problems in Fort Lee.”

Christie’s press conference lasted about two hours, but there remain some outstanding questions….

TPM: New Jersey Residents File Lawsuit Against Christie Over Traffic Jam

Six New Jersey residents have filed a federal lawsuit against Gov. Chris Christie, the state of New Jersey, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and others over traffic jams in September.

The suit filed in federal court Thursday appears to be the first civil claim over traffic jams that appear to have been caused as political punishment for the Fort Lee mayor.

The plaintiffs want it certified as a class action.

Charles Pierce: Big Chicken Exposed

…. I spent a couple of hours watching his bop-til-you-drop press conference this morning, and I came to the following conclusion.

What a fking poltroon.

…. The basic theme of the press conference was that Big Chicken was responsible for one thing and one thing only — of trusting people who preyed on his well-known innocence and his extensively documented and deeply held faith in his fellow human beings …. What a world it is when a man cannot trust the hacks whom he appoints to serve him. Jesus H. Christ in the HOV lane, Nixon threw Haldeman and Ehrlichman out the windows with more compassion and fellow feeling than Christie demonstrated yesterday.

…. the simple fact is that Big Chicken remains a bully, and now he stands exposed as a coward, as most bullies are, and an entirely self-centered cad. “You need to understand this,” he said. “I am resolved to do the job, but I am a very sad person today. A person I gave a high public office betrayed me. I might get angry later. But I am a sad person today.”

In so goddamn many ways.

ThinkProgress: All-Male Congressional Committee Considers Imposing Far-Reaching Abortion Restrictions

On Thursday morning, the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice held a hearing on HR 7, the “No Taxpayer Funding For Abortion Act.” That subcommittee, which is headed up by Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ) and comprised of 12 other male lawmakers, is deciding whether to advance sweeping restrictions on abortion coverage that would make the procedure less affordable for women across the country.

Abortion opponents are relentless in their efforts to ensure that taxpayer dollars don’t end up financing abortion services. But HR 7 is actually deceptively titled. Under the guise of preventing federal money from covering abortion, it would actually have dramatic consequences for the insurance industry and the tax code as a whole, potentially creating a society in which private insurance no longer includes abortion care.

    Two things:

First, Maddow’s theory actually does make more sense than it be retribution against the mayor of Fort Lee.

Secondly, regarding the job figures. Make no mistake about it, they were putrid, specially after ADP’s guesstimate earlier in the week. We can try to sugar coat it all we want, talking about the over all year figures, talking about how the unemployment rate dropped, etc. I think that is the wrong way to go at it.

Instead, it is important to go on the attack about these numbers, admit they stink and then promptly put the blame where it belongs, on the GOP. This is the residual effect of pulling $24 billion dollars out of the economy, which is what the government shutdown did.

Trying to sugar coat it with other figures is like putting lipstick on a pig. No matter how much you put on, it is still a pig.

Dems are notorious for not going on offense enough and playing defense. This is time to do exactly the opposite. Place this squarely, over and over, right at the feet of the real culprits: the GOP.

Good morning anniebella, and all of the TOD family members; HAPPY FRIDAY!!

anniebella, to answer your question from previous thread.

I braved the morning Joe jokester show with his side kick Mika. Sometimes we can fight the enemy better when we know what they are saying and doing. Of course they opened the show by aggressively defending their good friend Christie. Well, it didn’t take the jokester Joe but a few minutes to say; Christie handled this better than Barack Obama. Barack Obama claimed he didn’t know what was going on with his IRS scandal. Barack Obama allowed the Benghazi mishap by taking money away that would have given them more protection. Barack Obama never takes responsibility, at least Christie fired people. Each time he said the President’s name, he said it with pure hate in his voice and disdain for this President. It was cruel and ugly. President Obama had nothing to do with this lying man and his Jersey politics.

Of course Mika talked about how she is “good” friends with Christie and she is bias but he was honest and great yesterday in giving his speech. Christie told her that he was sad about what “they” did. No one stopped joe scumborough from attacking President Obama, and one of the guys blamed Christie for the cultural atmosphere and Joe was immediately defensive and jumped back on the President.

The media is comparing Christie to President Obama and it’s wrong. Joe and Mika would not acknowledge the President as President, they both sat there calling him Barack Obama with a sense of arrogance, nastiness and hatred. I want to know, how in the hell is Christie mac-cream, is better than President Obama?

How do they get away with saying; President Obama took money away that would have given more protection in Benghazi? There was no IRS scandal. These a_ _ holes spend weeks on a fricking computer glitch, and now the Christie great hope, is the President’s Katrina. Everyone on that panel could have spoken up, this Christie S_ _ _ has nothing to do with President Obama. Christie’s karma is his enemy and President Obama doesn’t waste time with fools.

Someone should call joe scumborough out on his lies and hatred for President Obama. He blamed the President for s_ _ _ that congress is responsible for and everyone sat there as though they were scared of joe jokester and mika the sidekick. These people lie with hatred in their hearts for President Obama to coddle the ignorance of Christie.

JOE SCUMBOROUGH AND MIKA THE SIDE KICK – HE IS PRESIDENT BARACK H. OBAMA, DEAL WITH IT!!!

A GUIDE TO THE HOUSE REPUBLICAN DO-NOTHING CONGRESS:
    113TH CONGRESS EDITION

    WHAT THEY DID

    —————————————

SHUT DOWN THE GOVERNMENT: After lurching from manufactured crisis to manufactured crisis, the Republicans shut the federal government down for 16 days – taking $24 billion out of our economy and furloughing more than 800,000 federal workers.

VOTED TO REPEAL THE ACA: The GOP voted nine times this year to delay, defund or repeal the patient protections and budget savings included in the Affordable Care Act – bringing the total to 46 dead-end votes in a Republican-controlled House.
    .
    .
CONSISTENTLY IGNORED THE PRIORITIES OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE

Polls throughout the year have shown the American people overwhelmingly name jobs and the economy the top issues facing our country, support immigration reform, and increasing the minimum wage; yet, House Republicans failed to pass a single job creation bill, failed to take a single step toward immigration reform, and refused to raise the minimum wage for millions of American workers

    NO JOBS BILL

    NO IMMIGRATION REFORM

    NO MINIMUM WAGE INCREASE

GM Linda. I just piped in.

Stand Your Ground was raised earlier, then dropped. That was why GZ was Not arrested at the get go. However during the trial, they inferred and the parts of Juror instructions were on Stand Your Ground, but Not the Law itself. That was part of the confusion at least 2 GZ Jurors spoke about after the trail. So the MSNBC report is false.

    • 53 cookemom
      January 10, 2014 at 12:11 pm

The discussion was about why the local police department granted her approval to run short errands to the store, bank, etc., while they monitored her on GPS. She is out pending her hearing on her stand your ground defense for firing a warning shot at her husband.
The prosecution says that the local police department had no standing and should not have granted her release from her home arrest status. The Judge ruled that while the prosecutor was right, the defendant was not to blame, since she sought and was given approval. The judge said the mistake was by the local police department.

The MSNBC report was not about Zimmerman, other than they both used stand your ground as defenses with very different outcomes.

    finally some journalism from nyt?

There are plenty of questions that Mr. Christie and his aides, current and former, need to answer.

First, is it plausible that officials as high up as Ms. Kelly and Mr. Christie’s top appointees at the Port Authority, which controls the bridge, would decide to seek revenge and create this traffic chaos on their own?

Did Mr. Christie know in December, when Mr. Baroni and Mr. Wildstein resigned, that these two members of his inner circle had taken part in the scheme? Did he ever ask them what happened?

The email documents released on Wednesday were heavily redacted. Why? And when will the full emails be made public?

Why did Mr. Christie insist that the traffic snarl was connected to a “traffic study,” even after Port Authority officials denied there was any such study? Did he try to get the Port Authority to stop its own internal investigation of the problem?

As governor for the last four years, Mr. Christie has earned a reputation for running a very tight operation and is known as a top-down, hands-on leader. If he cannot control his top aides, can he be trusted to manage the entire state?

    /

Mr. Christie has promised to cooperate with investigators — a vow he and his staff must honor. At this point, the governor has zero credibility. His office has abused its power, and only a full and conclusive investigation can restore public trust in his administration.

Christie is a political Performer artist. He is 51/52 years old. He was trying to snow the media. He did. But he didn’t snow all of them. Now the scrutiny begins and the bully Can’t handle it. He will explode sooner rather than later.

      Drip, Drip, Drip.

RMaddow got Bob McDonnell. She has had her EYE on Christie and she will not give up. She will Use facts and Christie will soon find out that His games are up and his Cronies in the media would soon jump ship. The story is too Juicy for them to continue to protect Christie.

The attacks on pres Obama is typical. They know the difference between fake drummed up media driven stories to Christie’s blatant corruption and intimidation.

I think Christie’s top aid Bridget Kelly has something to say, and she’s going to say it soon. Christie went out of his way to throw her under the bus, she thought Christie was going to “ride or die” with her and that’s why she did what she did. But Christie didn’t look out for her; he better put something on her books to keep her going through the winter.

      January 10, 2014 at 12:24 pm

I see speculation that her silence was bought before the press conference by Christie’s legal team. I’m sure everyone in the media and their brother are trying to get an interview with her. I think that’s been taken care of.

        January 10, 2014 at 12:34 pm

Yep. She was bought and all that disappearance from the public, 24 hours before yesterday’s presser. Who was Christie talking to? How did Bridget Anne Kelley know she was fired and who informed her?

        • January 10, 2014 at 1:50 pm

Christie and his minions probably gave her a good severance, told her to take one for the team and warned her that she would be thrown under the bus.

Turkish judges deplore Erdogan government reform plans.

Turkey’s top judicial body has condemned government plans to reform it, calling the move unconstitutional.

The Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors – the HSYK – said coming under justice ministry control would undermine its independence.

The reform is being debated in a parliament dominated by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s AK Party.

Some allies of Mr Erdogan have been arrested in a major corruption inquiry, while many policemen have been sacked.

Missing her terribly. Dancing to “Happy” by Pharell(ck sp) from “Despicable II soundtrack with kids yesterday and thought of her.

This comment here should almost guarantee a new post!

Tuned in to CNN a bit, to see what the hacks were saying about Christie, because I sure wasn’t watching Andrea Mitchell. The Republican said Chris is not that dumb, knows the law, and this won’t hurt him … but ended the droll convo by mentioning Pres. Obama didn’t know what his people were doing relating to the health.gov website yada yada yada. The Dem said that latter reference has nothing to do with the Christie situation – doesn’t even compare; i.e., doesn’t compute. The guy laughed.

The anchor hack mentioned the class action lawsuit – which apparently was first brought up around the time of the incident in September, when the initiators sought legal advice – and twisted and slanted all of her leanings about the motivation by the class action seekers to a TOTAL blame-the-victim scenario … an example of which was her question, “Are they just being opportunistic?”

    Click.

Have only had a few moments today to glance at #BridgeGhazi developments, but increasingly I’m concerned with the well-being of Ms. Kelly.

I hope the Feds are providing protective services for her. Per Rachel Maddow’s investigative journalism, Ms Kelly simply could not have acted alone and the fact that the response to her email was effectively, ‘ok we’re on it’ means that the scheme had obviously been discussed prior to the morning of 13 August.
