Jim Kuhnhenn: Obama to nominate Calif. businesswoman to lead SBA

Maria Contreras-Sweet, the founder of a Latino-owned community bank in Los Angeles who was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, has a history of working with small businesses and has been an advocate for Hispanics. As California’s secretary of the state’s Business, Transportation and Housing Agency from 1999 to 2003, she was the first Latina to serve as a cabinet secretary in the state and oversaw 40,000 state employees and a $12 billion budget.

In 2006, she founded ProAmérica Bank, a financial institution that aimed to assist small and mid-size businesses. Before that, she was president and co-founder of a private equity firm that provided capital to small California businesses. Contreras-Sweet would become the second Hispanic in Obama’s second term Cabinet. The other is Labor Secretary Thomas Perez. She would also become the eighth woman in Obama’s current Cabinet.

Lesley Clark: First Lady Joins With Alicia Keys To Talk Education

First Lady Michelle Obama has earned accolades — and few brickbats — for her campaigns to improve the American diet and get people off the couch. She’s also championed hiring opportunities for returning veterans. And now, the first lady says, she’s adding another initiative to her roster: helping achieve President Obama’s goal that the U.S. by 2020 will have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world. (It once was No. 1 but has fallen to 12th, she said.) Still, Obama, who turns 50 on Friday, says she’s not giving up her “Let’s Move,” food and exercise program or her “Joining Forces” campaign to help military veterans and their families.

“Nothing is going away, we’re just adding more on,” Obama said Wednesday, talking to a room full of educators at the White House. “I’m going to be doing my very best to promote these efforts by talking directly with young people. That’s my focus. Everybody else is going to be talking about resources, but the one thing I can bring to this is the message that we can give directly to young people.” Obama’s remarks came after a White House screening of “The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete,” produced by the singer, Alicia Keys, who preceded Obama at the lectern in the State Dining Room.

    I’m so glad that Mrs. Obama is just lending her dress to the Smithsonian for a year. I read that POTUS really didn’t want to let it go. I want her to keep it from that beautiful night!

    What a thrill it would be to be one of those curators working with that wonderful dress!!!!!

      When my oldest daughter lived in DC I got to go to the 2009 Inauguration with her and that was a real high point for me. We also went to one of the balls, but it was not one of the ones the Obamas attended. A couple years later on a visit I saw Michelle’s dress for the Inaugural Balls. I really like her red second Inaugural Ball dress better.

    Thanks, UT, for the late night focus on FLOTUS and double thanks for the dress photos. Michelle Obama just lifts your spirits at the end of an exhausting day. I would love to know what went on between the president and Senate Dems today. I hope the conversation was stern and the president took no prisoners. Despite all of our frustrations with the Dems and the Koch Brothers and our outrage at the heartless Congressional Republicans, we have a fighting president who isn’t going to take any nonsense this year. I am absolutely confident he will bring it home during the SOTU when tens of millions of people will be watching and getting undiluted information directly from the president. He has three years to go and the best is yet to come.

      Wouldn’t it be interesting if the “liberal” media invited Buono on their shows to talk about Christie the way they run after Romney for anti-Obama quotes???

        I believe I have seen Buono appearing on more than one of the “liberal” shows this past week, saying things like, “I tried to tell you”!

    ICYMI (the premiere, I mean): This seems like a good moment to share my Michelle O’s birthday tribute with the family. And no, I still haven’t learned how to make a video all by myself. I gathered the pictures, put them in the order I wanted and asked my son to take pity on me….. et Voilà!

    I hope the West Virginia river contamination story does not die.

    This environmental catastatrophe has Koch fingerprints all over it.

    This links to the second page of the article, so you’ll need to click on “previous page” to read the whole article. The felony was for tax evasion, but this clearly ties Koch to the event.

    What happened in WV is was an avoidable sin against Mother Nature and the United States itself.

    Egyptian officials speak of a high turnout in a referendum on a new constitution, with voters expected to back the removal of President Morsi.

    Top election official Nabil Salib told state TV that voter turnout was higher than in previous polls but gave no precise figure, AP news agency said.

    The second day of voting on Wednesday passed off largely peacefully.

    A senior interior ministry official told a private TV channel that turnout in the vote may exceed 55%, Reuters news agency said. He said preliminary results indicated that approval of the constitution may be more than 95%.

    However, turnout was reported to be low in Muslim Brotherhood strongholds.

    Mr Salib did not give a figure for voter turnout but said results were expected to be announced on Friday. State TV said initial results showed 50% turnout with more than 90% voting yes.

    Vatican officials are expected to face tough questions from the UN on the sexual abuse of thousands of children by Catholic clergy.

    Members of the Holy See – the city state’s diplomatic entity – will be grilled by a UN committee in Geneva.

    The Vatican refused an earlier request for information, saying the cases were the responsibility of the judiciary of countries where abuse took place.

    The Pope has said dealing with abuse is vital for the Church’s credibility.

    new year => new decisions in so many fields;

    many people I know are making a decision to rebuild shaky finances that were brutalized before and /or especially during the recession;

    has anyone here ever made a “credit freeze” aka “credit report freeze” aka “credit lock down” ?

    thoughts about the effectiveness and affordability of such actions?

    thanks!

    PBO was elected twice with 51% of the vote, brought back economy. Doubled Dow, ended 1 war and ending 2nd, increased clean energy, oil & gas production, bringing back manufacturing, health care to millions, slowing health care inflation, patients’ bill of rights, all in the face of GOP obstruction and extremism. Changed the political campaign by enlisting millions of small donors and community organizers. GOP Media and hacks like Schweitzer seek to diminish him but they won’t succeed. We do have the power and will keep organizing for change
