Greg Sargent: More cracks in GOP resistance to Obamacare

There are increasing signs that the GOP’s total war opposition to Obamacare is becoming tougher to sustain. The basic organizing principle – that only maximum resistance is acceptable in the face of such an existential threat to American freedom – is still widely dominant. But there are scattered indications it’s giving way to an implicit acknowledgment that the law’s fundamental goal — expanding health coverage and security to those who lack it, through more federal oversight and spending – has some moral validity.

ThinkProgress: Pennsylvania Man Confronts His Governor For Refusing To Expand Medicaid: ‘How Many People Have To Die?’

This week, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett (R) had a run-in with one of his constituents as he was leaving a fundraising event. Scot Rosenzweig — who identified himself as a fellow Republican — showed Corbett a large photograph of his fiancee, Dina Nelson, who died at the age of 41 because she was uninsured and couldn’t afford a liver transplant. “I think maybe we should consider accepting the Medicaid expansion,” Rosenzweig told his governor, explaining that people like Nelson need access to lifesaving health treatment.

“I can’t do that,” Corbett responded.

Corbett is one of 25 governors who have declined to accept Obamacare’s optional Medicaid expansion, a move that is preventing an estimated 700,000 low-income Pennsylvanians from accessing public health insurance…..

Michael Tomasky: Why Women Do Not ♥ Huckabee

What galaxy do Republican men live in? Apparently one where ladies who use contraception are ‘helpless’ and this potential 2016 contender could have been the fifth Beatle.

A few weeks ago, right after the dark clouds gathered over Chris Christie’s presidential prospects, some friends and I were having the usual Washington conversation of discussing the rest of the field. After we agreed that it was an awfully B-list bench, someone piped up: Hey, don’t forget Mike Huckabee! He’s losing all the weight!

Clearly, some of that vaporized body mass came out of his brain matter, based on his unhinged comments Wednesday at the Republican Party’s winter meeting. Discussing the GOP’s need to get more of the women’s vote, he said the Democratic Party tells women “they are helpless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing for them a prescription each month for birth control because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of government.”

TPM: 2014 Could Be A Bad Year For Tea Party Senate Candidates

One of the craziest potential match-ups in the Republican Senate primaries this year promised to be Rep. Steve Stockman (R-TX) against incumbent Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) — but early momentum for Stockman quickly fizzled.

Stockman, whose tea party bona fides include threatening to impeach President Barack Obama over new gun control restrictions and comparing Obamacare to sexually transmitted diseases, doesn’t seem to be making much of a dent in the poll numbers after his last-minute entry into the Senate primary. Stockman couldn’t even emerge victorious in a local Texas tea party straw poll and has even recently been missing from congressional votes. And though it’s still early in the 2014 cycle, Stockman’s lackluster campaign might be indicative of how insurgent tea partiers challengers are faring against establishment Republicans. So far, it’s looking increasingly like the so-called tea party wave, which peaked in 2010, might be headed toward a valley this time around.

Wisconsin State Journal: Scott Walker upset sex offender allowed on stage with him

Gov. Scott Walker said Thursday he was frustrated that a registered sex offender and felon was allowed to stand alongside him during his State of the State speech.

Christopher Barber, a 32-year-old welder, was one of 13 newly hired workers Walker brought out to stand behind him during the opening minutes of his Wednesday speech as examples of how an improved economy is leading to more people finding work.

Barber wore his welding helmet and work gloves on stage. He waved to the audience in the Assembly chamber as he left the podium and Walker turned around and applauded …. Walker didn’t know that Barber, of Two Rivers, is a registered sex offender with two felonies and three drunken driving offenses.

Virginia State Capitol Bans American Flags On Sticks, But Lets Guns In

What is the bigger risk inside a state capitol building: openly carrying an American flag or an assault rifle? In Virginia, capitol visitors can not bring American flags and signs affixed to sticks, because capitol security considers sticks a public threat. Firearms, however, are allowed.

      My State Needs Obamacare. Now.

      By Governor Steve Beshear

      ———————————–

Frankly, we can’t implement the Affordable Care Act fast enough.

As for naysayers, I’m offended by their partisan gamesmanship, as they continue to pour time, money and energy into overturning or defunding the Affordable Care Act. It’s shameful that these critics haven’t invested that same level of energy into trying to improve the health of our citizens.

They insist that the Affordable Care Act will never work — when in fact a similar approach put into effect in Massachusetts by Mitt Romney, then the governor, is working.

So, to those more worried about political power than Kentucky’s families, I say, “Get over it.”

The Affordable Care Act was approved by Congress and sanctioned by the Supreme Court. It is the law of the land.

Get over it … and get out of the way so I can help my people. Here in Kentucky, we cannot afford to waste another day or another life.

Steve Beshear, a Democrat, is the governor of Kentucky.

Some of you may recall that on Tuesday I posted here that my employer held a mandatory lecture for all management to attend. The speaker was a “motivational” speaker, former staffer for St. Reagan post-presidency. He is also the Florida chairman for Americans for Prosperity, the political arm of the Koch Bros. I asked my supervisor if I could be excused from going. I told her I had a lot of work as I was absent on the prior day. I was told I have to go…mandatory. So, apparently my objection to this speaker was apparent to him by my body language and he complained to Sr. Management after the 3 hour talk and they launched an investigation by speaking to my co-workers and taking written statements. They completely through me under the bus even though they all knew my political leanings. Bumper stickers mainly. I do not talk openly at work unless I know they are liked minded. And one of these co-workers was or claimed to be. Well, yesterday afternoon I was terminated after 6 years of employment there because I “embarrassed” the CEO who brought this bagger in to speak to his “team”. Needless to say I am consulting with an attorney as I feel my civil rights have been violated. When my boss asked why I just didn’t get up and leave, I said because you said I had to attend and were sitting in the row in front of me (but she did not see or hear what my co-workers reported). My boss is new, about 8 months, and has been gunning for me from day one. Luckily I kept a dated log of the instances when she called me on the carpet to present to the attorney. Florida is a right to work, rethug state, but I think I have been legally violated and will see if I have a case. This employers policy is to not pay out sick time, etc. of which I have 150 hours in the bank. I at least want that. Not feeling down today. Feeling relieved. This bitch was on a mission to get me out. Bad, bad karma! Thanks for listening TOD’ers! Happy weekend!

      Good afternoon Lb4Obama,

Please don’t back down, and good for you for keeping a journal. I had a very similar problem with a boss who was out for me the moment he arrived and made my life a living nightmare. I was let go while everyone else was given a new location. I filed with the EEOC and they issued my “right-to-sue” letter after 90 days. I was blessed to have a firm accept my case; double blessing because they only represented corporations but were interested because I had kept records. Well, it took 7 years because they played games (the manager and the company) by delaying the arbitration dates. Their ultimate goal was to tire me out and I would go away.

They didn’t know that I was prepared to wait. We had our day and I won my case against evil after 7 long, sometime painful years. I had been discriminated against for working while black, and the verdict was reached by “4 elderly southern white men” who served as the arbitrators.

It sent shock waves through that room when they said that they were going to hear the case. The manager and the company had fought to have it thrown out because of Florida’s right to work law. I had been humiliated in hearings by that manager and his bosses; they laughed at me and even told my attorney that I didn’t have a chance and I should just move on. Well, they really didn’t know me and I what I had already experience in my life at the hands of racial discrimination.

Those 4 arbitrators looked at the facts and most importantly, they believed me and they awarded damages, my attorney fees and lost of income. I was at home when the verdict call came in, and my attorney rushed over to deliver the news in person. Justice was 7 years long, and at times slow, and the spirit of hopelessness was felt through the crevices of my heart. However, I knew the truth and I prayed that those 4 arbitrators would see and hear the truth, and know that I was wronged for no other reason, than the fact that I was black.

So please don’t give up, justice can be slow but victory can be sweet. The road will not be easy but hold on to what you know is right.

I wish you nothing but the best in resolving your situation, and hope that everything will work out for your good. Keep getting up, keep smiling and keeping believing that your “BEST DAYS” are ahead of you and not behind you. The BEST is yet to come.

      Warmest Blessings,
      Cindy

Five Important Sex Ed Lessons For Republican Lawmakers

    BY TARA CULP-RESSLER

    —————————————-

This week, Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) sparked considerable controversy when he suggested that offering insurance coverage for birth control is rooted in the assumption that women need the government to help them control their sex drives. Huckabee is hardly the first lawmaker to make an illogical comment about reproductive health that seems to belie the way that women’s reproductive systems actually work. Gaffes of this nature have become a serious problem for the GOP party, particularly as it attempts to attract more female voters.

Republicans have held some training sessions to help teach lawmakers how to better talk to women, but the issue may have deeper roots than a lack of PR savvy. Some lawmakers simply need to go back to health class. Here are five important lessons about reproductive health that GOP politicians should commit to memory:

Ryan Loskarn, a former Senate staffer who was facing child porn charges, was found dead Thursday afternoon, Politico reported on Friday.

According to Politico, Loskarn is believed to have committed suicide.

Loskarn, the former chief of staff to Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN), was arrested in December on federal charges of possession and distribution of child pornography. While he awaited trial, Loskarn had been confined to his parents’ home in Maryland. Court documents filed after his arrest indicated that prosecutors and Loskarn’s lawyers “intend to explore the possibility of a pre-indictment disposition.”

He’s been making the jackals look like fools today.

Oh , now a question about a former campaign manager signing on to Priorities USA. There must be something nefarious about that. Meanwhile, Jim Messina is a private citizen and Priorities USA is an independent organization. What does that have to do with PBO. Unbelievable…….

    Lesson for today.

A lecturer when explaining stress management to an audience,
Raised a glass of water and asked
‘How heavy is this glass of water?’

Answers called out ranged from 20g to 500g.

The lecturer replied, ‘The absolute weight doesn’t matter.
It depends on how long you try to hold it.

If I hold it for a minute, that’s not a problem.

If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my right arm.

If I hold it for a day, you’ll have to call an ambulance.

In each case, it’s the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the
    heavier it becomes.’

    He continued,

‘And that’s the way it is with stress management.

If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later,

As the burden becomes increasingly heavy,

We won’t be able to carry on. ‘

‘As with the glass of water,

You have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again.

When we’re refreshed, we can carry on with the burden.’

‘So, before you return home tonight, put the burden of work down.

    Don’t carry it home.

You can pick it up tomorrow.

    Whatever burdens you’re carrying now,

Let them down for a moment if you can.’

So, my friend, Put down anything that may be a burden to you right now.

Don’t pick it up again until after you’ve rested a while.

Here are some great ways of dealing with the burdens of life:

    * Accept that some days you’re the pigeon,
And some days you’re the statue.

    * Always keep your words soft and sweet,
Just in case you have to eat them.

    * Always wear stuff that will make you look good
If you die in the middle of it.

    * Drive carefully. It’s not only cars that can be
    Recalled by their maker.

    * If you can’t be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.

    * If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again,
    It was probably worth it.

    * It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to be kind to
    others.

    * Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time,
Because then you won’t have a leg to stand on.

    * Nobody cares if you can’t dance well.
    Just get up and dance.

    * Since it’s the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late.

    * The second mouse gets the cheese.

    * When everything’s coming your way,
    You’re in the wrong lane.

    * Birthdays are good for you.
The more you have, the longer you live.

    * You may be only one person in the world,
But you may also be the world to one person.

    * Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.

    * We could learn a lot from crayons… Some are sharp, some are pretty
and some are dull. Some have weird names, and all are different colors,
but they all have to live in the same box.

*A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.
Have an awesome day and know that someone has thought about you
    today…I did ..

    Jackie, it’s a beautiful morning!
Ms. Dudette would have interjected some music right about here. Do miss her terribly and praying for TOTAL healing.
    Welcome back Nathun.
    What a week!
Just catching up to everything and everybody. It took every bit of my energy to do so, but loved every second.
Lurking is my middle name now. I thank everyone for all you do here collectively keeping me informed and engaged.

    Have a great weekend!
Stay warm. It is brrrrrrr here in NYC. I even love that.
Waking up knowing PBO is our President makes everything a lot brighter.
Witnessing Chris Christie house of terror fall down is marvelous. He did this to himself.
The trouble with “bullies”, they don’t know when to stop. Power is addictive.
Are they going to go ahead and swear this thug in? It was postponed due to weather the other day.

Hi LDS – love your positive post – even the weather has a positive vibe :) :)
Christie has been sworn in – may not be for too long – he may have to bow out (probably nor voluntarily).
