The Obama White House is pulling out all the stops for the State of the Union. Join in the excitement and fun of a participatory government.
Nailed it NW. I knew your next post was going to be big block of cheese day.
CONGRATS, Ladyhawke! Good evening, TOD!!!
Looks like I have tons of catching up to do…
Thanks Alycee. I can’t wipe the smile off my face after watching that adorable video. How cool is that.
Proposing a deal, Alycee. You do the (catch up) work, then share the highlights with me, and I’ll be suitably grateful.
LOL! Did I tell you I have short-term memory loss? Takes me forever to catch up because I read, re-read, re-read until a little of it sticks…
I am actually a slow reader, and nothing sticks 5 minutes after I’ve read an article! At least a little sticks in your case.
::takes multiple bows:: Thank you very much, LH and congrats on first!
Start getting my award ready – I’m claiming first for next thread!
Thanks in advance
Duly noted, Madame HF.
but… Cindy -
Lovely, TY NW.
I think I am being discriminated against – I am still reading “Inside the state of the union” and you post another thread. Sigh.
Not to worry, simply claim first for the thread after the next (I’m first for that one already) and Nerdy Wonka will kindly prepare your award.
Um – Nerdy Wonka is not feeling the love I bring at the minute – don’t think that is going to work very well hf
Maybe I should claim first in 2017?
Heh…a very worthy (albeit long-term) goal….
But. I had a reservation.. Am I missing something here?
That’s because you said, I cheated my way to first place like Chips.
You say one more thing again and another post will magically appear. Say something…..say something.
I’m never going to win this one – I know how Gov Christie must be feeling this week.
Cannot believe I am watching Chris Hayes – his next segment is to be on the downward path of the Governor!
You know 99ts, if Chris Hayes promised a segment with Wayne Rooney dancing naked with Denzil Washington, I still couldn’t watch. Hayes actually makes me come out in a rash
And guess what – he says “coming up xxx” and what do we get – yyy – however – he is on the UI horror.
It is definitely the day I should have stayed under the covers.
“…. he says “coming up xxx” and what do we get – yyy”
That sums the guy up!!
All above me disqualified: Fiiiiiiiiiiirst.
Thank you Nerdy!!!!

I know a LOT of people, with college degrees, that had more than a few meals of “gubmint” cheese.
*raises hand* I was one.
My favorite aunt in her late 80s signed up for it, and used to walk over and pick it up, in her little town. I’m pretty sure she qualified income-wise, although she owned her own home and really didn’t need the help (even if she didn’t have enough food for herself already, which wasn’t the case, her son and his family were nearby). But once she heard about it, she considered it her duty to take advantage of it, to keep it going for the people who really did need it … she said she was “keeping the numbers up,” so they wouldn’t drop the program. Good for her. Plus, it was another social time for her, to get out and see people, not just pick up the free cheese and whatever else they handed out! How I miss that woman! She lived long enough to vote for President Obama in 2008, even though she pronounced his name as though it rhymed with Alabama. Ha.
What the Huck??? The GNOP will never learn, looks like they’ve hucked up again.
We see what you did there.
Luv it – you bring joy with your posts every day cookemom
This is ridiculous. Just as I get to post a comment on the last thread – up pops a new thread. As my compensation for damages, I’m claiming first for the next thread! Congrats Ladyhawke on #1!
I’m under siege hf – still 2 (or is it 3) posts back.

Eek. I’d be in the head, the whole time.
If it were me, I’d ask him why he has to talk trash about our President. Why he hasn’t done anything charitable with his life. Why he can’t be honest about his wealth.
I would ask to be moved to coach.
For my team, the 2014 State of the Union process started months ago.
It started with a pile of folders, papers, and a lot of ideas — from the President, regular people, and policy experts — that we want this speech and this year to focus on.
That’s our team’s job: We take the President’s ideas and priorities and we execute the policies that will put them into action.
Today, I took over the White House’s Instagram to share a couple shots from my day. Take a look — and if you haven’t already, make sure you let us know you’ll be watching next Tuesday.
Ultimately, everything that goes into the President’s address and the work that follows – work that is focused on making life a little better for millions of Americans — all started, at some point, with a letter to the President or an idea in a binder.
It’s a pretty cool job and one I’m honored to have.
If you want to see how it all comes together, make sure you’re watching on Tuesday.
I have a juicy bieber knock. Wonder if I should post.

Speaking of cheese … more or less. Still reeling over the New York Magazine (or wherever it came from) depiction of Hillary Clinton as “a planet.” To my mind, every time I see the depiction, she looks more like the face of a “(wo)man in the moon” to me. It’s unflattering, makes her look the fool, and nobody’s fooling anybody with that planet thing. It was an ugly mock of her and all women, IMHO.
Unless Hillary finds a cure for everything that ails our nation between now and 2016, sorry, folks, I do not want her to run; I do not want her to win. There will be never-ending mocks and insults and lies hurled at her. I don’t really like her style; I don’t like some of her politics. Let her rest from politics. Let her do humanitarian work; she’s a huge proponent of causes that positively affect women and girls, and I think that should continue to be her niche.
I will vote for her if she ends up with the nomination, but I will not give her any of my hard-earned money. I’m not looking forward to a Clinton dynasty. I’d sooner have a Bush dynasty or a Duck dynasty, and I really don’t want those. This is America. No more Clintons, please. Dynasty should remain a TV show back in the ’80s.
My only other consideration is that it MUST be a Democrat, of course. Granted, it won’t be another President Barack Obama. I’m reconciled to that. Just don’t let us see another Clinton in the Oval.
If it’s Joe, then I’ll be Ridin’ with Biden! If not, I just hope it’s not somebody whose initials are HRC, whose face has already been caricatured a gazillion times on magazine covers and beyond, which is quite ENOUGH for me.
Yes that ugly moon face floating all over the Twitter is just a preview of the foolishness we will have to put up with if she gets nominated. The media will be all about nonsense distractions, while she is unable to get a thing done to actually improve the lives of ordinary Americans and continue PBO’s legacy. Unless PBO/Biden are going to run a shadow “Third term” Presidency where they pull the strings behind the scenes if she gets elected.
I like that “shadow” Presidency, but – unfortunately – it’s probably just in our dreams!
I read that article and it’s clear that both Clinton’s have the ego and the will to run again. To have that many people raising money in your name – they are not doing so without the knowledge that they are mounting a full-fledged assault.
To be honest, I’m frankly shocked at all the members of the OTeam who’ve always signed up for her run. All the reasons we ran against her in 2008 still hold. So I’m very disappointed in their jumping on the bandwagon at his juncture. It’s either opportunistic or genuine, neither of which are admirable to me. I also feel it’s quite an insult to our Vice President, who, regardless of his prospects, has been a GREAT VP.
GAH, lots of typos. Auto correct here is intrusive!
Clintons, not Clinton’s
….OTeam who’ve ALREADY signed up for her run.
I so very much agree with your “all the members of the OTeam” part, in particular, although I know it’s their choice, and at least they’re helping a Democrat. But I’m very disappointed. And a little sick about it. And my first thought was directed at them — good luck getting the same response President Obama got. It was not just technical wizardry and campaign strategy that got Barack Obama either the donations or the votes. It was the man.
And I cannot believe the insult of all this to our Vice President, either, as you said. Reminds me in a much greater way what NJ Dems did to Barbara Buono, although she’s nowhere near the candidate for public office that VP Biden is. And we saw how that worked out for just the one state. I hope we’re not all sorry for this … by losing in 2016.
JOB, I’m with you. If it’s Joe, he has my money, my time, my vote. Any other Dem gets my vote; they’ll have to earn the rest. HRC gets my vote by default. The great thing about 2008 & 2012 was I ENTHUSIASTICALLY supported BHO; I also enthusiastically voted FOR Carter; all the other elections, I was voting AGAINST the rethug…
With you on all of that, Alycee!
J.O.B. You’ve said it all.
I do wish that Dems would stop using the Frank Luntz GOP language on this. It’s really at the heart of what the average non-political person thinks about liberals – that our only goal is to take money from the rich and spread it to those who are “undeserving”. And they get this idea because Dems don’t ever object to the phrasing or description of referring to Social Security and Medicare and now Obamacare as “entitlements”. It totally reinforces a completely wrong description of them.

Did you used to watch the SOTU addresses prior to the Obama Presidency? Will U tune in on Tuesday?— Donna NoShock (@NoShock) January 25, 2014
Donna I was just about to post your tweet, and dare the TOD community to come clean and fess up to the fact that they (who were old enough) never were interested in SOTU prior to 2009 (with the exception of GGail, you and a couple others). Hehahaha
I watched it in the movie – does that count – only time I ever heard of the SOTU prior to PBO.
I’ve been watching for decades, but never enjoyed it as much as seeing President Obama present it, and Vice President Biden’s sitting behind him, nodding and clapping and standing and smiling! Ha!
I’m a political junkie — have watched each and every one since I was a kid…
My first presidential press conferences that I’d watch after high school on our black and white TV were JFK’s, so I know what you mean. Of course, I gave up presidential politics for a long, long time after he was assassinated! Tried to get back into it for Bobby’s run, but we know what happened there, as well.
Donna, during the 90′s when I was working at a trade association DC, I had to watch the Clinton SOTU’s a couple of times for work and I was bored stiff. I had never watched it before and never did again until President Obama.
I think I’ve watched every one since forever—–many times to jeer and make boo hissing noises—-but I still watched—–have loved politics since I was a wee girl, listening to the nominating conventions on the radio.
Yes. I did. Since GH Bush. Not 100% for when I was in school and didn’t have VCR or when I worked nights, I didn’t catch them all. C-SPAN was my go to place for they repeated the speeches.
Hey, you guys ever checked out the “Snapshots” section at WH.GOV? Never paid any attention to it before tonight, but it looks promising. Here’s a part of the ‘Creating Jobs’ policy page [The page is laid out ‘nicely’ with bullets, plus visuals.

That is really sad. I have some close relatives who divorced in their later years – all ended up so miserable, bitter and very sad.
Captain has serious illness….dementia or Alzheimer and Tennille is doing that supposedly for Cost and medical coverage. Some have questioned the tactics since both are wealthy, Made loads of money, are Medicare …..should be medicare recipients…….Perhaps, by divorcing the Captain, then Tennille gets to keep the wealth and have the State 100% coverage for the Captain.

See ya a little later, guys! Maybe in time for “the music.”
I read an article on Huff and Puff today which I won’t link to and it was our ole friend Chuck Todd discussing how this WH is the most secretive and controlling in history. He was complaining about how this WH goes around the traditional media and wants to control their messaging. I honestly laughed out loud when I read this piece of crap article. For one thing, this is the first Presidency completely in the new digital age. There was no WH.gov live video events. The WH website looked nothing like what we have today. The Presidents before PBO did their weekly radio addresses with no video. There was no West Wing Week. There was no video of anything in real time prior to PBO.
The other Presidents didn’t do late night TV except during an election year and Youtube was in its infancy. How they can compare what PBO does for communication to what prior Presidents did is simply preposterous because there is no comparison.
yeah, Obama’s communications are so public that they are private.
up is down, yes is no-ism.
These idiots are really reaching.
As you say, whitehouse.gov has archive after archive of EVERYTHING PBO has ever done.
PBO travels the country making himself available to the general public on a routine basis.
He’s on every social media channel available.
He takes us behind the scenes not only on WWW but also in videos like the one for SOTU.
What these morons hate is that he isn’t in their laps. He doesn’t bow to the nonsense and doesn’t play their insider DC game. He doesn’t watch their stupid shows and doesn’t pander to their idiotic questions in pressers.
I’m proud of how PBO handles the press. They don’t deserve his attention.
Perfectly said Donna – and Chuck Todd is obviously technically challenged.
Donna, I’d really like to know what Chuck Todd knows about presidential history. He’s an uneducated man who has probably read little history and doesn’t have a clue about any administration earlier than Clinton’s. He’s only 41, so his personal experience is limited. When you have the intellectual depth of a slice of “cheese” and make a statement about “any administration in HISTORY,” you immediately define yourself as a moron.
That theme began with editorial by the NYT editor, Jill Abramson——-read in full on Morning Joke, by Morning Meeka—-which just thrilled Joe—-and Nicolle Wallace—–to the point they were yelling at everyone “The Most Secretive in History!!!” It was so ridiculous. And by the way, Ms. Abramson was the editor of the Chgo Trib for many years and boy has it improved since she left——she took with her a big chunk of its conservative slant. PBO just goes about his business and is someone none of his critics could ever hope to be——-someone way above them by any measurement—-and they know it—–and it drives them all nuts.
Jay Carney has answered this charge many times including yesterday as Ed Henry or Jon Karl brought this NYT piece up. POTUS has had over 671 interviews with various reporters across US. GW Bush 291 times and Clinton 319 times at the exact same Time frame. The DC/NY pundits false and lying charges are just that, based on fabrications Not Facts and Data.

Can someone explain to me – what is the legal difference between the RNC spending thousands to buy clothes for Sarah Palin and her family and a supporter buying a designer dress for the wife of Gov McDonnell? Was it purely because it was done after, rather than before – the election?
One is campaign expenses, the other is corruption.
Weird – just weird – especially if they didn’t know that.
Oh from the Indictment papers it appears that all parties were well informed of who was doing what. It’s all here. http://apps.washingtonpost.com/g/page/local/robert-f-mcdonnell-indictment/751/
I think Palin had to return all those. But even if she didn’t the big, big difference is that the McDonnell indictment is alleged to be quid pro quo and allegations of bribery, etc. etc. The allegation is that unless he (the supporter) provided large sums of cash and loans and gifts to the McDonnel’s then he wouldn’t get any political favors of getting his company’s product fast tracked for Virginia government approval.
Thanks Forus – I appreciate your knowledge, explanation.
Palin didn’t return all the clothes – if any – and what was the RNC to do with them. I don’t disagree that the RNC had to dress her – must have been a shock when they discovered her clothes sense and wardrobe.
I just don’t see any major difference – seems the McDonnells just did it at the wrong time.
I do understand the concept of receiving loans/gifts for benefit & I agree it is probably illegal – but I think it simply proves that some folks know how to do it legally and some do not.
No, there is a major, major difference – I’m just not explaining it well. One of the keys though is that this isn’t about campaign donations which has separate rules. This is about illegal use of an elected position; abuse of power. It’s why our former governor is getting served dinner in a cell in Colorado tonight.
You did explain it & I appreciate it & I still think the Gov’s wife could have got all she wanted – if she did it via campaign funds, rather than after the election.
I more than agree that what happened is exactly as you say. Maybe I am just ranting about the amount of money that is part of election campaigns – and if that can get controlled, corporations and their bosses may have their massive influence reduced.
99ts. I think the GOP presidential campaign in 2008 budgeted the $$ for making candidates look presentable–clothes, hair, makeup, etc. That’s the money that was used for Sarah Palin. Virginia’s budget had a clothing allowance for the state’s first lady for the inaugural and if she has used that, it would have been fine. However, she thought it was too small an amount and wanted to make a bigger splash, so she asked one of the donors to give her money. The MdConnell’s then wanted money for other personal reasons, including their daughter’s wedding, and, as Forus said, they traded money for favors. That’s where they got into trouble.
I think the GOP had to budget much more than expected for Palin – but that is another story.
It does make more sense if the Gov’s wife wanted the high roller life – without the high roller money. I’m still thinking she didn’t think before deciding how to get the money.
Also thinking how much the President HAS to be “above suspicion” The GOP does it – so are trying so hard to prove “that one” must also do it. Big fail.
If I remember correctly Palin had to give everything back after the election. she put expensive dresses in black trash bags. When she was governor she had a lot of problems receiving gifts that were unreported, but I think that was the problem. She didn’t report it to the IRS or the state. I used to read The Mudflats, an Anchorage blog, when Palin was VP candidate. Sorry I’m fuzzy on details!
one was a governor…one was a candidate…in addition…McDonnell used his office to deliver customers to the company that was showering him and his wife with gifts
Gov in VA can’t run for re-election. There is Only One Term in VA. So that explains why the VA case is so over the top.

This is potentially a BFD.
ast week, the all-Republican Texas Supreme Court rejected a request by a conservative “dark money” group to keep its donors secret. The lawsuit alleges that the Law Enforcement Alliance of America (LEAA) illegally “coordinated” its ads with Attorney General Greg Abbott’s (R) 2002 campaign. If evidence emerges that the LEAA coordinated with Abbott’s campaign, then the millions of dollars it spent on ads could be considered illegal in-kind campaign contributions. That could spell trouble for Abbott’s 2014 gubernatorial campaign, which currently has a huge fundraising advantage over his leading opponent, state Sen. Wendy Davis (D)…..
