Good Grief ….now they are reporting on the # of words the President said on a subject compared to last year.

    Guns

    This year 69 words

    Last year 451 words.

I wish these people would get a real job

Now he is asking Antoinette Tuff if ” that was enough “

Maybe they should go to minimum wage for these yakkers – the money they make is just too easy. They have no clue what reality is.

Their approach makes some kind of sense when you consider that media types are apparently paid by the number of words *they* utter, whether the words are substantive or not.

Not too impressed with Charlie Pierce insisting on describing PBO’s SOTU as ‘his best Clintonian speech yet’! Hello, Charlie?? WTF? Have not finished the two earlier threads, so am pretty sure I’m not alone on this one.

    • 22 vcprezofan2
      January 29, 2014 at 1:26 pm

MP, I’ve more or less accepted that every media article that acknowledges the President’s accomplishments or prowess MUST have a stinger embedded somewhere. It’s for this very reason that I rarely tweet or repost a link without reading it in its entirety. Then I decide if I can live with attaching my twitter name to article despite the particular stinger or not. Some stingers make me so ‘mad’ I don’t bother tweeting even though other parts of the article.may be really solid.

    • 23 jacquelineoboomer
      January 29, 2014 at 1:26 pm

Those of us who saw it know better. Other than what I see referenced here or on twitter, which is interesting, I limit myself to what I personally gleaned from the SOTU and not what these interpreters think I saw. Arghh.

    • January 29, 2014 at 1:39 pm

I’m seeing that sentiment a lot. Really frosts me.

      • 25 hopefruit2
        January 29, 2014 at 2:06 pm

It’s a slick way of not giving PBO credit while claiming to “like” his speech just to get folks off your back. I think vc is right on the money when she says to make sure to read an entire article before posting a link which seems to be praising PBO. Because there’s almost always a back-handed compliment somewhere. The damning with faint praise is usually worse than an overt criticism.

    • 46 hopefruit2
      January 29, 2014 at 1:57 pm

Nothing gives Snowden credence short of PBO and/or Holder coming out and saying that Snowden is actually a decoy working for the Obama administration. And if that were to ever happen – watch the Snowden supporters turn against him faster than you could say “oh.”

Just a personal note on this glorious day for all who love President Obama……January 29 is always a special day in our home, because it was on January 29, 1966 that my husband I met on a blind date in Pasadena, CA. That’s forty-eight years ago! We were married five months later and we always celebrate January 29 too. Completely changed our two lives, and many other lives affected by ours.
We have experienced everything in the wedding vows except “richer”…..better, worse, sickness, health, a little richer now, and poorer. I am so thankful for his support and love these past forty-eight years.

We watched the president together yesterday, and marveled at him, his calm, his humor, his absolutely right on the money for the average American…..whom he understands and cares about. We’re both so glad we lived long enough to experience this. And, every time my husband sees him on TV, he says: “We saw him.”

Happy ‘anniversary’ to carolyn and Mr. carolyn!

January 29th was my mother’s birthday (104 years ago!). It’s also the day we adopted Kasper, our trouble-making bichon/maltese mix, four years ago. My husband’s mother’s maiden name was Kasper, we adopted him on my mother’s birthday, so he’s “Kasper with a K” to honor both of our mothers. January 29 is a special day for me as well.

However, I and Mr. 57 have you beat: we met on the 4th of July, 1980. Also a set-up by mutual friends. We were married 6 weeks to the day we met! And here we are, almost 34 years later……

Have a wonderful day, celebrating the great fortune that brought you two together……..

    Hello TOD village!
Still savoring last night after watching the SOTU speech twice. I called the WH to and let comments how pleased I am of our President. I had to wait for an operator, so I took that to mean others are calling in also. Needless to say, I did not mind the wait. And to top it off today PBO is speaking at my favorite place to shop. Cosco is the best! I am a much happier person when I know that I am going there, while I am there and when I leave. I will ask my elderly neighbors if they need anything just to go. You can say that I am fool for Cosco. And to know that they value their employers is an added plus. Trader Joe’s is another favorite of mine. I stay far away from Wal-mart and Whole Foods.

I am feeling so positive today about everything and everyone.
Never ever watched SOTU speeches until PBO. Never found a reason to do so.
I shared with the WH operator that there should be a Bill passed for PBO to remain president four more years.
    She laughed……..

I do not remember a President, I am 68 years old, going out and interacting with the people of this country, listening to them, talking WITH, not at them, as President Barack Obama. He truly is a President who wants government to work for the people, not a government that wants the people to work for it.

      January 29, 2014 at 4:21 pm

You’re right Anna…….I’m 74, and there has not been a president who has gone to the people like our PBO. That is because, he is truly one of us. He knows and lived the struggles we have. Some others did, I know, but he has felt free to let us know and share with us, and therefore, we feel free to share with him. I so wish his mother could be here with him!

Been lurking. Home sick today with some school crud that’s going around. I’ve been so lucky all year, it was bound to happen sooner or later.

Good read today from TPV: http://www.thepeoplesview.net/2014/01/why-republicans-are-freaking-out-at.html

There is a very good reason why Republicans “mainstream” and otherwise are having a heart attack over this: with this attitude, the president has captured the rightful outrage the American people have against Congress. And because Congressional obstructionism is seen (correctly) as largely a Republican fault, it would spell trouble for them if the president is able to capitalize on that anger. Republicans are now painted into a dangerous corner with no good choices: they could (a) cooperate on sensible things with the president and be skinned alive by their base, (b) do nothing and prove the president right as he ramps up an election-year agenda of taking and publicizing his executive actions in contrast with Congress and explain to the American people why their lives can’t be even better, or (c) do nothing and sue the administration to try to stop the executive actions.

Doing (c) may be the most disastrous of all the options above for the Republicans (which probably means that’s what they are going to do). It will allow the president and the Democrats to cast Republicans as super-obstructionists who not only will not help but will try to stop someone who is trying to help. And as with most challenges to executive power, in the absence of being able to pass a law clearly forbidding a given executive action, the challenges will also fail in court.

Carolyn…Happy Anniversary to you and the Mr:) And to you, sweet GB….hugs and hope and patience and Positive Mental Attitude. One day at a time.

CHRISTIE USED SANDY MONEY AS POLITICAL SLUSH FUND, EVIDENCE SHOWS (Editorial)

Looks like we must send out a new batch of subpoenas, this time over fresh and powerful evidence that the governor personally misused Hurricane Sandy funds to win an endorsement from a Democrat.

This sounds like Hoboken in reverse. While Mayor Dawn Zimmer accuses the administration of withholding Hurricane Sandy aid for political reasons in her city, the evidence in Belleville indicates that the governor provided extra aid for a mayor who was willing to dance. … http://blog.nj.com/njv_editorial_page/2014/01/christie_awards_political_ally.html
