Pete Souza is one of those rare people whose work absolutely expands our vision of the world. Like all TODers, I love his photos of this POTUS, and FLOTUS, and I just visited his website for the first time. I saw Afghanistan as I’ve never seen it.

You are right: He is SOUZA THE GREAT. I’m blown away…

So true, hopefruit2. Remember President Obama once stated in an interview: Pete and I are like an old married couple.” Sweetly stated. He went on to say how he trusts Pete with his presidency and his family. If you get to know POB, you will see that his family, and how he presents himself in his work are very important to him. Those are two core pillars of who President Barack H. Obama is in his life.

I trust Pete Souza and I love how he respects the president and his presidency. We are going to be fine. As our wonderful Bobfr reminds us: #TrustBarack

Outside of Psycho, I really liked the remakes

    …………………..

Fantasy Hollywood: restaging classic films with black models

When two Dakar-based photographers messed with some very familiar screen moments, they were taken aback by the racial dimension to the response

Back in the 80s, my classmates and I piled into Mbabane’s local cinema to watch Top Gun. We’d turn to each other, channeling our best version of Val Kilmer to spout “You can be my wing man anytime” – followed by intense laughter. Who doesn’t have a favourite line, an iconic moment from film lodged in our minds?

Dakar-based photographers Omar Victor Diop and Antoine Tempé were counting on just that, the shared experience and ubiquity of film, when the hotel group Onomo International invited them to create a series of photographs using the hotel as a backdrop. They turned to the silver screen, to iconic moments they’ve held onto to and mined for their collaborative project, ONOMOllywood.

In 20 images that pay homage to characters such as Truman Capote’s Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, these reinventions begin with the a humble “what if…” A question looking to how popular global cultural translates to the local, what could it look like, and what new memories would it create. The project has created conversation, accolades and blowback, but in an interview with Another Africa, Diop takes it all in stride.

Hey y’all. Layla, thanks for asking how I’m doing. As I said, overall quite well. Movements of lying down and then sitting up are hardest. I am trying to stay ahead of the pain and mostly doing that. As most of you know, it’s a time thing. I tend to be a very compliant patient so I will follow directions. We are blessed with wonderful church friends and wonderful neighbors—lots of food and offers to do anything we need. And all the love, prayers and support from TOD. Feeling very blessed!!!!!!!!

Chips and Nerdy Wonka – sorry for the attached and I normally wouldn’t do this and I understand if you delete this note but I have a friend who would love to win tickets to see Jennifer Nettles. She (my friend) is such an amazing person and volunteer. Always putting others before herself. I would like to see her get a break.

To win she has to get as many people as possible to view a Jennifer Nettles video using a link (https://www.tunespeak.com/tl/6UN8Kcv6) she set up. Please please please, consider taking 4 mins of your time to watch. The contest runs the next three days if you have four mins to spare, please click the link and watch. It would be an amazing thing to make her wish come true. If anyone feels the need to share the link, please do so. It would be such a treat. Thanks. https://www.tunespeak.com/tl/6UN8Kcv6

Seventy miles an hour at thirty-five below
Oh, how I love Canada when the snow’s up to your butt
You take a breath of winter and your nose gets frozen shut
Yes, the weather here is wonderful so I guess I’ll hang around

What I just love about these fabulous photos by Pete Souza is that they drive the GOP and the media crazy. They hate these photos because they defy the narrative image they so desperately want to portray about
President Obama. They hate these photos so much that they have even accused Pete Souza of ‘staging’ them. Imagine that. They just can’t stand the truth that Pete Souza captures so effortlessly. The photos show an elegant, dignified, charismatic, charming, passionate, playful and caring man who happens to be the leader of the free world. A devoted husband and father. A man who is good inside and only wants the best for the American people. Oh, and he happens to be a baby whisperer and the pied piper with whippersnappers on top of that. The photos say it all. PBO continues to make his critics look petty and small.

Wow! What performers were the Nicholaus Brothers! Possibly the most athletic dancers to ever perform in the 20th century. I remember them being highlighted in the movie “That’s Entertainment” from the 1970s. And of course Cab Calloway was a master of jazz music.

Prettyfoot, thank you for sharing this powerful poem by Langston Hughes. I did a performance with my Performing Arts Class just before I retired and a young student recited this for me, and then the ‘Dance Makers’ did a moving dance with choir behind them singing a an arrangement of Deep River to the poem. This sharing here brought back tears for me today. I loved that part of my teaching days. {{{{{{{{TY}}}}}}}} I love the works of Mr. Hughes. I have many of his classic books. Love it.

Pete Souza – “I try to photograph everything. Every meeting that the president does. I look at my job as a visual historian. The most important thing is to create a good visual archive for history, so 50 or a hundred years from now, people can go back and look at all these pictures.”

This will no doubt be the basis of the next poll by the WSJ – just love how they word their lies

“Is Eric Holder’s Justice Department driven by a political agenda, or are the department’s recent prosecutorial decisions simply signs of overzealousness? ”

So it’s politics or overzealousness that is causing the GOP governors grief according to the WSJ. Most people think it is the words and actions of the governors that are the problem – but the GOP doesn’t have that as one of the options.

Not going to link – they don’t deserve the clicks – but this will be the defense for McDonnell and Christie – and how weak it is.

Sounds like a solution :) They are livid because it was their last white hope that has been shown to be a crook – they have been such dismal failures in their attempts to bring down PBO.

When I read the schedule related to the Dem Senators and dem caucus – my reaction was how sad it is that the GOP refuse to even have a discussion with the President – refuse to invite him to any event at all. For 4 years the President tried to work with the GOP – and they just say NO – and this disgusting article by a RW hack tells us 110% more about the GOP than the Justice Department.

Just heard a good report on our local PBS station, about the ACA. First United Methodist Church in Edmond (the rather wealthy northern suburb of OKC) is having lessons every Wed night on the ACA. People have been coming, and learning and signing up. The reporter asked a woman if it was political, and she said no. ” If we believe everyone is God’s child, then everyone should be covered by health insurance, and that is our goal.” Then, the program discussed a church in the Hispanic side of town that is informing and enrolling people using the navigators. The spokesman said that the navigators work with four at a time. They have info in Spanish, Vietnamese and other languages. He said their facility has the most languages available. People spoke about how they were surprised at how affordable and good this is, and that the scare stories they’d heard were false. In all, the spokesman said that 10,000 people so far in Oklahoma have signed up, and the number is growing. This without any official or state government help and advertising. Hooray for the churches!

    http://www.latimes.com/business/hiltzik/la-fi-mh-anthems-huge-premium-increase-20140131,0,5354357.story#axzz2s7XTjuLL

What’s behind Anthem’s huge premium increase? Not Obamacare.

Insurance companies, bless their hearts, seem determined to remind us why we need the Affordable Care Act. The latest example comes from Anthem Blue Cross, which has just hit 306,000 customers in California with premium increases of up to 25%.
As reported by my colleague Chad Terhune, the increases average 16% and are scheduled to kick in April 1, unless the state Department of Insurance jawbones Anthem into backing down.
Here’s the kicker: No one can blame these increases on the mandates of the Affordable Care Act, a popular argument among critics of the act. That’s because the increases are for grandfathered policies exempt from the act.
“It’s a rich irony,” says Anthony Wright, executive director of Health Access, a leading California consumer advocacy group. “The insurers can’t have it both ways — they can’t blame the increases on the ACA while increasing rates on their non-ACA-compliant plans as well.”
Wright observes that many of Anthem’s grandfathered plans don’t even include maternity care, the mandate for which is a popular target of the anti-Obamacare crowd. (To learn why, yes, men should pay for maternity care, see our explanation here.)

The booing of Christie in NYC was shocking in that it was so sustained and loud.
On the same stage, next to each other and smiling (not at the booing, just enjoying themselves) were Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill deBlasio.

The Christie booing was serious—–unlike when 1,000 fans are cheering for POTUS and 2 PUMAS boo aand then the headlines are “President is booed.”
