Early Bird Chat

Barack Obama, the first African American elected President of the Harvard Law Review, 1990

(I can’t work out if he was elected on February 5 or 6 in 1990, different places give different dates – maybe the election was one day, and the results the next? So, we’ll make it a two day anniversary celebration!).

MoooOOOooorning Early Birds – Happy Wednesday!

    Cutie:) Bringing this over…

Morning everyone:) Well look at this! http://www.kpho.com/story/24638929/cvs-caremark-plans-to-stop-tobacco-products-sales

CVS Caremark is kicking the habit of selling tobacco products at its more than 7,600 drugstores nationwide as it focuses more on providing health care.

The nation’s second-largest drugstore chain said Wednesday that it will phase out cigarettes, cigars and chewing tobacco by Oct. 1, a move that will cost about $2 billion in annual revenue but won’t affect its 2014 earnings forecast. CVS Caremark leaders say removing tobacco will help them grow the company’s business of working with doctors, hospitals and other care providers to improve customers’ health.

CVS Caremark Corp. and other major drugstore chains have been adding clinics to their stores for several years now. Their pharmacists deliver flu shots and other immunizations, and those clinics also have been expanding the care they deliver. They now help people manage chronic illnesses like high blood pressure and diabetes.

    Also:

Obama praises CVS for pulling tobacco from shelves
WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama is praising CVS Caremark for its decision to stop selling tobacco products at its drugstores.

Obama says CVS is setting a “powerful example,” and says the decision will help his administration’s efforts to reduce tobacco-related deaths and disease and bring down health care costs.

      Good Morning everybody.

President Obama on Wednesday hailed the decision by CVS Caremark to become the nation’s first large retail pharmacy chain to stop selling tobacco products.

“I applaud this morning’s news that CVS Caremark has decided to stop selling cigarettes and other tobacco products in its stores, and begin a national campaign to help millions of Americans quit smoking instead,” said Obama in a statement. …

Obama congratulated and thanked CVS CEO Larry Merlo and the company’s board of directors for making a choice that “will have a profoundly positive impact on the health of our country.”

I applaud this, but I just wonder if there’s ever been a UN report like this before – seems many decades late (since the institution of the UN) if it is. Get it all out there, from my POV. Moral teachings on abortion and contraception are one thing that could remain internal to any church – and a church can discuss those among its members – but child sexual abuse is another that should never have been tolerated or hidden from view when discovered. Never. Get it all out there.

By the way, the one who dropped out was the mayor of Allentown, Ed Pawlowski. He came to our town and we had a chance to talk to him. Nice guy, good ideas, but didn’t think he had the fight in him to go toe to toe with Corbett or overcome the money gap. There are still to many candidates in the race who don’t have a chance to win or get enough money. It really is time for them to graciously step out.

    Did you know:

After the success of Negro Digest (similar to the Reader’s Digest but aimed to cover positive stories about the African-American community), publisher John H. Johnson in 1945 decided to create a magazine to showcase black achievement while also looking at current issues affecting African Americans. The first issue of his publication, Ebony, sold out in a matter of hours. The magazine has been published continually since the autumn of 1945.

    Have a great O’Day Everyone!

We were rich with positive information about us. When I came to NY I was drawn to “The Liberation Bookstore” in Harlem on 131st and Lenox (which is now a restaurant). Before that stopping there we had “The Learning Tree”on the corner of 125th and Lenox. The highlight was “The Rainbow Record Shop” where you qould find jazz, gospel, R&B, Blues.

Morning all, from icy PA. The last line in the Harvard/NYT announcement made me laugh. Birthers will now state that both Harvard and the NYT were complicit in disguising the president’s birthplace because they were already conspiring to make him president in the next century.

On another note, does anybody know why there are so many stray dogs in Socchi? Every article talks about stray dogs (some hostile) on the streets, wandering into hotel rooms and even roaming in packs. How on earth did this happen? They must have zero provisions for dog licensing, pounds, shelters or anything approaching animal control in Russia. It seems as if NO ONE thought anything through when Socchi got awarded the games, least of all the Russians themselves.

    • 49 57andfemale
      February 5, 2014 at 9:03 am

It’s a despicable place. And the fact that Russia has done such a miserable job cleaning up that city is an absolute disgrace. One of the reasons a city wants the Olympics is to get funds for urban development.

This is going to be a train wreck. And when you start slaughtering dogs for the convenience of sports, you’ve lost me entirely. Not that it’s a great sacrifice – I’m not a sports person anyway.

Yes Vicki we are on the same page today. I am disgusted by the lousy reporting on the CBO report. The crux of the matter is defined below by Eric Boehlert. The problem is that the media is pre-programmed to find the negative angle to any story about President Obama. The truth just gets filtered out from their reporting. There seems to be an aversion to just reporting the facts. Because reporting the facts makes President Obama look good. And we can’t forget the media penchant for providing the echo chamber for GOP lies and distortions. It’s a sad commentary on journalism in this country. Any ‘real’ reporter should be embarrassed that the profession has sunk so low that facts just don’t matter any more. Apparently, what is important is what the GOP will be able to say in ads (which has always been a fact-free zone). Pathetic.

        Eric Boehlert ‏@EricBoehlert 12h

    • February 5, 2014 at 9:43 am

the article gives then and now headlines however the headlines are still MISSLEADING… the gist of the message from CBO is that workers, esp low wage workers do not have to work more hours or stay in bad jobs to have health insurance…that is a “BFD”…that should be the headlines…These headlines make it ever so clear that the press is not in the business of the telling the truth but carries the water for the GOP and those forces in the 1% whom the GOP serve.

It’s bad here in Chicago today and no one is even trying. The city has done a bad job of snow removal all winter, and today it’s as if they just gave up. Understand, I live on a busy main street, but I have to get out through the alley and through side streets. But today even the main street that I live on wasn’t touched until now – 10:30 a.m.

  20. 66 Vicki
    February 5, 2014 at 8:50 am

OK. Cooled off now and ready to comment on todays’ issues.
It strikes me that the brouhaha over CBO saying there might be changes in employment numbers comes down to this.

Remember The Company Store era of indentured servitude? It was different in different eras but the common factor was that workers were tied to their jobs in a way that meant they had no freedom or control over their own lives.

The MSM/GOP is mourning the end of Employer controlled health care for the same reason. Big companies like to have as much control over their workers as possible. That way they keep wages and benefits down. Naturally propagandists like Mrs. Ezra are whining on the front page of the NY Times about workers gaining some personal freedom. The Editorial page in the Times, on the other hand, has got an accurate handle on the matter. The RW dominates the front pages but Editorial still shows an occasional spark of decency.

In a nutshell here is the issue:
If you are 62 and would like to retire but can’t do so because you need your company-provided health insurance until Medicare kicks in at 65….Well, now you are free. Retire and get Obamacare!!

You are working full-time in order to keep your company health care when you’d rather work part-time, well now go right ahead and reduce your hours. Get Obamacare!

You are young and ambitious and would like to try something new, but you have asthma so you are afraid if you quit your job you won’t be able to get health insurance. Quit that job and get Obamacare!

This is the heart of the matter. Individuals gain control of their own healthcare that they can afford and the Corporate State’s grip is loosened.

    • 67 jackiegrumbacher
      February 5, 2014 at 9:09 am

Beautiful summary, Vicki. You got it in one. It amazes me how otherwise intelligent people absolutely refuse to understand this issue. Those who complain about it are the same as those who thought Social Security would be a disincentive for old people to work until they died on the job. It’s the view that anyone who isn’t enslaved to his employer from childhood to death is a taker, rather than a person who chooses to live with dignity and have a decent and fulfilling life. In no other country would the CBO report be viewed in this cynical and inhumane fashion.

    • 69 desertflower
      February 5, 2014 at 9:11 am

You are exactly right…but MY takeaway on this whole thing is that whenever the CBO has something to tell America, it should do it in the simplest terms possible…talk to America, the MSM in particular, like they are all in kindergarten, so as not to misconstrue or misinterpret important information. I honestly believe that. Otherwise, as is the case this time…they will twist and mangle the message and Americans will be left shaking their heads and wondering “WTF?” yet again.

      Excellent summary, Vicki.

I am constantly astounded by the ignorance out there. My best friend is an HR Vice President of a manufacturing company in PA. She’s a good liberal, has spent much of her years on the job researching and providing health insurance for her employees. She and her husband both follow the issues but even she didn’t understand how ACA would help her.

She is ready to retire and wanted to take early retirement. Her husband is a few years younger than she is and she told me at the end of last year that she would stick it out so that he could stay on her health insurance – COBRA would be too expensive to maintain until he was eligible for Medicare.

I said that ACA would virtually fix that – he could find affordable, comprehensive insurance on the exchanges and maybe even a subsidy at their reduced income when she retired.

“Oh. Really? I didn’t know that.”

God. An HR manager, a liberal, a Democrat – didn’t know this.

One of my best friends works for Lieu at the State Capitol and she asked me yesterday if I would consider campaigning for him. I told her I was really going to support Fluke. Her boss has done a lot of great things but can sometimes be a bit of an emoprog. So, I’m disappointed Fluke isn’t running but Lieu is piling up strong endorsements. First of all, what bearing does Aiken’s participation in an apolitical reality music show over 10 yrs ago have to do with his running for a political seat now? Why would he base his current political party affiliation based on American idol votes? And more importantly, why is Aiken’s party affiliation such an issue for Mr. Todd, who has yet to correct his misinformation about the CBO report despite scores of tweets from people challenging him on it?

And this is exactly why I am quick to correct people who claim that the “WH is bad at messaging.” This crap about WH messaging is a media/GOP manufactured meme that should NEVER be repeated by Obama supporters. It is an intellectually lazy and dishonest argument which in effect removes all media accountability for ethical, unbiased reporting and lays everything at the feet of the President and his administration – even when they are doing the right thing.

    • 98 57andfemale
      February 5, 2014 at 11:27 am

hopefruit, I disagree. No question the press has not done its job and in fact chooses to report lies rather than fact. But Democrts do not get in front of the message as effectively as they should and tend to react rather than be proactive. Democrats are still into tepid sound bites that do not connect viscerally. I’m frankly astounded that Dem’s cannot find their way out of process and cool common sense to attack the fearmongers more effectively.

The entire Democratic machine should have been out in force with outrage about the lies being told about the CBO report. Look at how Republicans do it – on the Sunday shows even Paul Ryan, who actually hates Chris Christie for being a RINO, heaped nothing but praise on him. When have you seen Dem’s coalesce and show outrage on our behalf? When they do it, they win because they facts and decency on their side – like fighting the government shut down last time. We’re just not as good at it as we should be.

I completely agree that the truth is constantly being obscured by Republican obstruction and MSM lies. But the ‘truth’ is not being presented as effectively as it should be.

It’s not just up to PBO. It’s up to the entire Democratic apparatus to strategize better, focus and demonstrate outrage. If they did it, they would get attention and there would be a tinge of fear in the press that Dem’s might actually fight and fight hard. We have to be honest and take some responsibility, at least a little.

      • 99 hopefruit2
        February 5, 2014 at 11:46 am

I wasn’t talking about “Democrats” in general – I was referring specifically to the meme that the Obama WH is bad at messaging.

Democrats fall under a much larger tent than the GOP, and some of them have largely conservative agendas – despite being affiliated with the Dem party. So it is easier for the GOP to stick to a unified message because their jobs are much easier – even the so-called “liberal” media is ready to hand them accolades for simply not falling flat on their faces. Remember how quickly and easily the entire media spectrum was ready to give Romney a pass for that first debate – despite the numerous lies he told? At the same time, they were all ready to declare PBO’s presidency over….and some Obama supporters ran with that same line of thinking.

That’s the point I’m making, and this double standard has got to stop. We are not doing ourselves any favors by blaming PBO and/or the Democrats for a media that is largely owned and controlled by Republicans. Yes, I do call out some Democrats for going on cable TV and attacking PBO, but I also make sure to call out the media for inviting Dems on their shows only if they attack the administration.

And to be honest, I think the Dems have improved substantially over the years at messaging compared to what they were in the times of Gore/Dean/Kerry when the media completely derailed the campaigns of these candidates. But I know the Dems’ jobs are 100% harder in keeping the media spin at bay – always remember, the GOP has no work to do where the media is concerned. Just look at MSNBC’s response to RNC’s chair faux outrage over a random tweet….

The Dem’s are better but I still think they should be better than they are. the big tent is great as long as it doesn’t fracture the party. I don’t believe that we ever could have gotten a unified party for health care reform, but I think the edges could have been shorn up better by strong, message-oriented party leaders. There are basics of a party platform that make Democrats, well, Democrats and a more effective party leadership could have helped some of the recalcitrant Dem’s to explain health care better to their constituents. Beasher of KY is the perfect example of what should have been happening nationwide.

We still need strong, proactive images and messaging. I will never understand why George Lakoff isn’t on the Democratic Party payroll. If you don’t know about him, Google him and see how effective progressive messaging can and should be.

We’re in the fight of our lives and I get a little cranky when our own side doesn’t fight commensurate with the stakes.

I disagree. This Team is lousy at messaging. The media knows it and that is why they are so eager to side with the right for there is Never a Strong Push back. When the media gets it wrong, the Team should emphatically denounce the lies as they strongly re-affirm the TRUTH.

What is your frame of reference for deciding that this particular Team is “lousy at messaging?” Which other Team are you comparing it to? And if you can only come up with a Republican administration, you’ve basically proven my point.

To further illustrate my idea here, Martin Luther King had a great, compelling message of equality and basic human rights for all. He was a fantastic orator and messenger, and had a huge following as a charismatic courageous leader. He was able to lead civil rights movements and help bring about policy and legislative changes.

Yet, at the time of his assassination, he had a 28% approval rating in public opinion. Would you argue, that MLK’s low approval rating was because of his “lousy messaging?” Would you agree that if only MLK was able to refute and emphatically denounce the lies that the media spread about him, his approvals would have been much higher? (And keep in mind that MLK was not even President, he was singularly devoted to civil rights activism).
