    Good morning, everyone.
    Do we have any TOD members from San Diego?
    There is a mayor’s election there on Tuesday with a young progressive latino democrat facing an older GOP guy.

    If anyone has personal opinions about this race I’d be interested in hearing about it.
    The NYTimes is asking if this will be another deBlasio style progressive win. Sure hope so.

        Yes. I just read that and was coming back here to post it. Nice work, hf.
        David Alvarez is the candidates name. I’ll be eager to see the results tuesday night.

      lh i looked at one of those websites and yes it was very snarky, sarcastic and just plain rude. If you looked down at the bottom of it it says “created by the Republican party” blah blah blah. But still. There are plenty of people who don’t get sarcasm and think whatever is on the internet is the truth. I think that asking for a donation and not saying who it’s going to specifically is misleading and basically they’re making the play to steal from people.

    The PA race for governor turned interesting. The state committee met and gave a majority of their votes to State Treasury Rob McCord, rather than the expected frontrunner, Allyson Schwartz. Everyone else came pretty far behind. It will be interesting to see how this shapes out in terms of dropouts in the weeks ahead. If we can narrow down the pack, the race becomes less of a road show and more of a serious competition.

    Good Sunday morning, Chips & TOD OTeam.

    Jose Andres owns the restaurant that PBO and FLOTUS visited last night. Just wanted to highlight what a great man he is with a BIG heart.

    He’s very involved in feeding the poor and training the unemployed and homeless in DC:

          Good morning, LH! Isn’t he a treasure? And now he’s also a big advocate for immigration reform:

            Jose is just delightful. His humanity is on full display in the Haiti video. I would love to go to his restaurant Oyamel. I checked out the menu and the selections are amazing. I bet the handmade guacamole and salt air margaritas are real crowd pleasers for starters. I am so glad POTUS & FLOTUS had a date night there.

      great article DF. I liked the comment that said until we have only publicly financed political campaigns, things like ALEC and Citizen’s United will continue to corrupt our political system. (I paraphrased)

        Money is corrupting our politics and democracy. It is very plain to see….read the other post below…it speaks to the same issues.

    Rick Scott HAS to go:

    State blocks use of UF student union as early voting center

    Election supervisors and the League of Women Voters have a new complaint with Gov. Rick Scott and the Legislature over early voting.

    After years of complaints by supervisors who struggled with historically long lines at the polls in 2012, lawmakers last year expanded the list of early voting sites to include fairgronds, civic centers, courthouses, county commission buildings, stadiums, convention centers and government-owned community centers.

    But when the city of Gainesville — which is heavily Democratic — asked if it could use the University of Florida student union for early voting in next month’s municipal elections, the state said no.

    Interesting read. http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/02/09/d-c-needs-a-grass-roots-fix-that-will-come-when-left-and-right-find-common-ground.html

    The striking fact about American politics today is the gap between America and its politics. If this were a market, entrepreneurs would quickly fill that gap. If this were a democracy, a new generation of leaders would claim it.

    We’ll soon see just what we are—and who the real “reformers” are.

    Agreed.

      I wrote here a few days ago that if we want to win and change politics at all levels, ALL Dem candidates must include in their platform : campaign reform and financial transparency for tax money coming in and out of all government accounts;

      these two would separate candidates from their monied influence, reduce tax give aways to huge corporations and make money available for real community needs (schools, health, homelessness/shelter, roads, food, energy etc,

    this is an interesting blog post by frank schaeffer. I find his take on how “conservative” “evangelical” leaders use belief in God as a product. Something to be bought and sold and it reminds and instructs me that this is exactly what happens in politics as well. that there are cynical, far leaning dogmatic sides of all parties that use their beliefs not to help people but to gain power and money only for themselves. (I find though that it is usually the right that does this. I’m hard pressed to come up with a left leaning person who is in the same league as a Scott Walker or Christie)

    Anyhoo. Interesting read.

      Yes, we knew Christie was a bully. But we didn’t know his crew was crazy enough to put people’s lives at risk in Fort Lee as a means to pressure the mayor. We didn’t know he would use Hurricane Sandy aid as a political slush fund. And we certainly didn’t know that Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer was sitting on a credible charge of extortion by Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno.

      Guess, until the thug punches you in the face, you don’t realize what a thug is.

    so Kansas has exhausted all stupid policies they could enact and now they are onto abolishing no-fault divorce;

    trajectory will be : from abolishing no-fault divorce to the final destination of state mandating “no divorce”

    hard to feel sorry for the people who voted these extremists into power;

    it is even more amazing to see that Sebelius was a recent governor in this state!

    how did she ever get elected, three (?) times in state-wide races?

    I know politics “runs in her blood” given her father was a very consequential governor of the ultimate swing state of Ohio

      Kansas is hopeless. My brother-in-law comes from Dodge City, has lived in NY for 30 years and still says things like “tax and spend democrats.”

      The brainwashing starts early and is overwhelming. As far as i know there are very few if any voices opposing Fox and the Kochs.

      Can any GOP legislature have any bills that are not related to social issues – they all see their jobs as controlling people’s social interactions – whatever happened to the idea that government provides services??

      I hope VP Joe does!

      I have no doubt about whose interests BFD VP Joe Biden would ALWAYS protect – mine and ordinary people like me;

      VP Joe would never betray PBO and PBO’s legacy – because it is their joint legacy!

      Likewise Dr. Jill Biden would never betray FLOTUS’ legacy because it is their joint legacy
