Uh no. I just thought “people with the same name think alike.”

Of course there’s a new thread.
Please, Chips, can you move my summary of Bill deBlasio’s speech over?
Here it is Vicki, thank you!!
DeBlasio’s State of the City speech highlighted what had been done in the past month—–expanded Sick Leave pay to 500,000 more workers and moved the starting date to April 1 from the 2016 date Bloomberg left us.
What is happening this week—-expanding Living Wage to more people working for contractors hired by NYC. Will use Executive Order to expand program to tens of thousands of workers. Living wage is $10 with benefits and $11.50 (?) without benefits.
Next week—-introduce minimum wage increase that will affect all 5 boros.
Other great notion—municipal ID cards for undocumented residents. Giving everybody access to library cards and other city facilities. This part of the speech delivered in very decent Spanish.
Strong Progressive very encouraging message and a change from his Tale of Two Cities campaign, now to “One City. Rising Together.”
Thank you, Chips.
Now I see on the last thread that PBO is delivering a minimum wage speech on Wednesday.
Thanks vicki. What a refreshing change de Blasio is! :) NYC must be proud. I hope they give him 8 years to do the people’s work.
This is fantastic.
Thanks for the summary, Vicki.
Oh Vicki–thank you for this. I feel better just knowing someone like this is running NYC.
You are welcome, hf, nerdy wonka, and jackie.
I’ve been to Monticello – loved it!
In a feature story for the magazine’s Feb. 17 issue (sub. req.), Holder told Jeffrey Toobin that he will leave his post in 2014, though he also said that he planned to remain as attorney general “well into” the year.
Nooooooooooo-oooo! Please, FLOTUS, take him out again. It worked last time! :)
DoJ disputes this STORY.
Someone made it up ;) Thank goodness.
Jeebus! OK, let’s run our own newsie thingy. We wouldn’t have to make up anything about Repubs. We’d just quote them w/out commentary! And have audio/video to prove it!

[Awwwww! That's so lovely!]:
Washington, DC – After a busy week that included traveling to Michigan to sign the Farm Bill, President Barack Obama on Saturday evening escorted First Lady Michelle Obama to a Date Night dinner at the Penn Quarter hotspot Oyamel. Mrs. Obama knows the Mexican restaurant well: After repeat visits she has dubbed it one of her DC favorites, and said she is a big fan of the Margaritas.
The First Couple lingered for close to two hours after arriving by motorcade at 8:19 PM on a bitterly cold night, and fellow diners gave them cheers and applause. It was their first joint dinner excursion of 2014 in the nation’s capital, and it was also a first visit for President Obama.
The White House did not say if the First Couple was celebrating Valentine’s Day early, but it seems likely: They will be apart on Feb. 14th. President Obama is scheduled to travel to Maryland to meet with Democrats, and then he will fly to Southern California to meet with King Abdullah II of Jordan.

Thank you 57andfemale for the updates on your precious furry family.
I am so glad that you and Mr.57 had hearts of gold, filled with love, to rescue Miss Pearl and give so much love to her, Kasper and Nickelby.
So glad to hear that healing is knocking down doors and good health is on the horizon. Sending you and Mr.57 “special blessings” for your unselfishness and love; to share your home with your furry family and to give them so much care. Sending healing blessings for Miss Pearl and Mr. Nickelby, they have already won 1/2 the challenges; having a mommy and daddy who thinks the world of them : )
What all of our rescues have given back to us is so much more than we’ve given them. They are a consistent joy, even when there’s the inevitable heartbreak.
We found of beloved Harvey in a parking lot July, 2001: filthy with a tumor the size of my fist on his little foot. We picked him up, cleaned him up, had the tumor removed and found out it was cancer. We took him to a ‘cancer specialist’ (read: money mill) who wanted to irradiate his foot but guaranteed me that the cancer would come back “in 10 months, guaranteed”. By then that sweet little dog was starting to be afraid of the car due to visits to the vet. Hubby and I decided to love him, protect him and cherish what little time we had left with him instead of putting him through torture. he was at least 10 years old when we found him.
We went to an herbalist who specializes in cancer of animals. Gave him some special tea and some supplements.
The cancer did not come back for 6.5 years. We amputated his toe and thought we’d bought all kinds of time. But his little heart and kidneys gave out the following year.
If you would have asked me in, say, June of 2001 if I could have opened my heart to a dog I knew I’d only have a few months, I would have said you were crazy – I just didn’t believe I had it in me. That’s what Harvey taught me – the power and depth of my own love that I didn’t know I had. I learned more from that little dog than any of the humans I’ve known, that’s for sure. It only seems fitting to continue to share what Harvey taught us rather than wall off our hearts from the inevitable hurt. Oh my, what we would have missed if we hadn’t learned that lesson.
We only adopt adults who might not find a home otherwise. Kasper was the youngest – God knows after losing three elderly dogs and both of Mr. 57’s sisters within a span of two and a half years, I needed ‘youth’ in the house. He was about 9 months old. His owner had died.
As I’ve always said about Kasper, “I got everything I said I wanted…… and then some.”
Now I am crying….just too sweet and precious for words.
God bless you and Mr.57…
My Harvey was all white. He looked like a Westie but with floppy ears and slightly longer legs. He was such a beautiful boy….. I miss him every day…….
I know that you do….I feel it in your writing. It’s okay, our babies are so much joy and touches us the way humans, sometimes can’t.
Thank you for that beautiful blessing, Cindy. I can feel it warming me up on this frigid Chicago day.

Obamacare doesn't disincentive work. It incentives people to do what they want to do in life w/o worrying about health coverage.— john miller (@deaconmill) February 10, 2014
Well said and R/T’d!
By the end of President Obama’s second term, relations of countries around the world will be quite different and improved from when he took office. I read PBO’s and Hollande’s joint oped…..this is an important reset. PBO’s reset began, as I have said before, with his address to Parliament in 2011. This oped is a continuation.
GWB practically ruined our relations with France…..remember freedom fries, and the disparagement because France wouldn’t join us in the Iraq War. They were right. They had been down that road before…..Algeria, Viet Nam…???? It has taken PBO five years to rebuild trust with France, and this is important.
What many people forget is that France is our oldest ally. After the American victory at Saratoga, Jefferson and Franklin were able to convince the French to send Army officers to train our army. They kept us going…remember Lafayette. Then, at Yorktown, when Cornwallis saw the French fleet steaming into harbor, he knew the war was lost and he surrendered. We saw the presentation about this at Yorktown Battlefield….quite informative.
The ignorance of the GWB admin was devastating.

[I love seeing women kick ass! On Malawi's Joyce Banda]:
“All the ills that have dragged Malawi backwards must be stopped now,” said Malawi’s 63-year-old president, Joyce Banda, who was Vice President until her predecessor, Bingu wa Mutharika, died 21 months ago. “We’re at a transition point, and I am a part of a crop of new leaders on the African continent that worry about the people first.”
As the second female president elected in Africa, Banda is a beacon of hope. She isn’t afraid to take on challenges that have weighed her country – and a continent – down for decades. But ahead of presidential elections in May, Banda has just as many detractors as she does fans. And time is running out to convince her country that she’s the one who will walk them back from the edge of survival.
She has stridently taken on domestic abuse and the decriminalization of homosexuality – both taboo issues in the country. And she has continuously sacked cabinets over corruption rows.

FLASHBACK: “IF WE WERE A DOG FOOD, THEY WOULD TAKE US OFF THE SHELF.”
Tom Davis Gives Up
By PETER BAKER – (October 5, 2008)
No more. The revolution is over, the thrill is gone and the Republican brand under President Bush has, in Davis’s view, been so tarnished that, as he likes to say, “if we were a dog food, they would take us off the shelf.” These will be Davis’s last few weeks in Congress. He decided against re-election, disaffected by the partisanship, by a process he calls broken, by a party he considers hijacked by social conservatives. “We’re just not getting much done,” he said.
After 14 years in Congress, Tom Davis is giving up his place in the bucket brigade. Someone else will have to put out the fire. If anyone wants to try.
The way Davis sees it, the system has become dysfunctional. Bush has so destroyed the party’s public standing and Congress has become so infected with a win-at-all-costs mentality that there is no point in staying. “You know, the Cubs fans used to put the bags over their heads,” he told me when we met for eggs at Mickey’s Dining Car in St. Paul the first morning of the Republican National Convention. “That’s what I feel when you say you’re from Congress, because there are just so many things we’re not doing.”

But the Justice Department provided TPM a partial transcript of Toobin’s interview with Holder, and in it, the attorney general did not explicitly say that he would resign in 2014, but that he would stay “well into 2014.”
“The most the Attorney General has said is that he still has a lot he wants to accomplish on issues like criminal justice reform, voting rights and LGBT equality,” Justice spokesman Brian Fallon said in a statement. “He did not speak about his plans any further than that.”
As recently as Nov. 19, Holder, the first African-American attorney general in U.S. history, told CBS News that he didn’t have “any plans” to step down.
I am sure this might have been one of those questions asked at the WH Presser today.

OBSERVERS SEE THROUGH GOP EXCUSES FOR IMMIGRATION INACTION & HIGHLIGHT POLITICAL PERILS OF DELAY

Following Speaker of the House John Boehner’s (R-OH) pessimistic assessment on immigration reform’s legislative prospects, a range of observers are now calling out the latest Republican excuses for inaction and are highlighting the political consequences of the GOP blocking reform.

GOP MAY HAVE TO CHANGE PARTY SYMBOL FROM ELEPHANT TO DINOSAUR ……
HYPOCRISY ALERT: IS KEVIN MCCARTHY TRYING TO PASS OR SCUTTLE IMMIGRATION REFORM?
Rep. McCarthy should know that blocking immigration reform is the fastest way for the national Republican Party to become extinct. They’ll have to change their party symbol from the elephant to the dinosaur. Does Kevin McCarthy really want to be the Pete Wilson of the national GOP?
The idea that Republicans can blame President Obama for their own lack of progress is really ridiculous, the kind of Washington game-playing that drives people outside of DC crazy. Latino voters are following this issue, and they know that there is a legislative branch and an executive branch. They’re expecting action from both—and yes, that includes from Republicans.

[I didn't notice either!]:
It’s official — it’s no longer “the National Security Staff.”
It’s the “National Security Council Staff.”
President Obama, who had dropped the word “council” from the title back in 2009, restored it Monday at the behest of staff members who liked the old name better.

Last week was the worst of times and the best of times. I’ve been lurking and trying to follow the news at TOD for the past 2 weeks because I had to prep students for the PSAT and ACT tests that were administered on Saturday (February 8th). My tutorial schedule was hectic and non-stop. However, I had the opportunity to sneak a peek every now and then to see what was going on, in terms of the TOD postings.
The worst of times…..getting up every morning at 4:00 a. m. to meet with my 6:00 a. m. students, and driving 70 plus miles each day to prep everyone; morning, afternoon, evening and night.
Best of times:
Gobrooklyn caused me to literally shout when I read her comments that she “did not” need the surgery that was initially planned. I knew at that precise moment that prayers had been answered. I knew that the TOD family was on the job; praying and believing for miracles for Gobrooklyn. My student jumped because I screamed when I read the “good news.” I couldn’t contain my feelings because I believe in prayers and I know that this is the works of the Lord. I know that the TOD community comes together and it is a beautiful thing to witness.
Gobrooklyn, keep believing, keep praying, healing is on the way. Don’t give up and don’t give in, I believe you can win.
Lord, I come before you today in need of your healing hands on Gobrooklyn’s life. We are witnessing your works. In you all things are possible. Hold Gobrooklyn’s heart within yours, and renew her mind, body, soul and spirit – Give Gobrooklyn the strength to move forward on the path you’ve laid out for her. Guide her towards better health, healed in Your name. Amen
All though I didn’t post during this time, I continued to pray for Gobrooklyn, No Child Left Behind, Alycee, tnmtngirl, Mela in TX and the TOD family. My greatest time in prayer, is praying for others, and believing that all things are possible when we pray.
I was glad to see that your blood work is fine HZ and I pray that your dental procedure will go well for you. Mela in TX, keep the faith, the sun will shine again, and you will smile and laugh again-trouble don’t last always. Dudette, you are back home (TOD), what a blessing.
Lastly, Chipsticks, LL, Bobfr, Nerdy Wonka and all who contribute to the TOD community, “please don’t stop.” This is where I find my sanity when trying to keep abreast of the news, and most importantly-the truth. This is such an awesome place with sooooooooo many beautiful souls; supporting President Obama and supporting each other.
May you all be blessed indeed; smothered in love and filled with joy, happiness and prosperity, in every area of your life, for ever and ever. Amen
Cindy, Thank you for your prayers and not just for me, but for all of us here Inthe TOD family who are dealing with health issues. Such beautiful, uplifting, confirming words. I, too, believe in the power of prayer. I,too, was beyond relieved when I read GB’s news!!! As for my recovery: Going great. Went to two church services yesterday morning; rested most of afternoon, then to our Sunday evening Life Group get-together. This morning I went with husband to his chiropractor appt. We stopped at Trader Joe’s and shopped, quick stop for him to pick up some paint, then to local deli for lunch. Put things away when I got home and am now resting with my Jammie’s on. Leftovers for dinner so a salad is all I have to do. I do feel good.
Now that my friend is a praise report….. : )
So glad to hear that you are feeling good. Just don’t over do it. Jammie’s on this time of day sounds real good and comfy. Keep taking good care of yourself and I am going to keep on praying.
Thank you, Cindy, for your thoughts and prayers. I too believe in God and know that only by His Grace that I am alive and (almost) well today. It was a bad diagnostic back in April. Today, I am looking ahead and remain hopeful that soon I’ll be able to go back to the office. I thank you and thank all those that have been praying for me and for all the afflicted ones. Challenges come in all forms; illness seems to be the one many of us here share.
May God keep you and yours well.
Thank you No Child Left Behind, and Happy Monday to you……
Such good news about your recovery. Speak those things that are not as though they were; I will be returning to my office real soon : )
and yes you will be. All of us have challenges, and we all need prayers. I just believe that there is nothing one can’t overcome…when we band together and pray on one accord. I am just so happy for everyone’s recovery progress, and that those who are afflicted, come and share. There is power in praying, no matter how small or large the problem may be.
Keep getting better and I am going to keep on praying : )
You are a treasure, Cindy.

Did New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) fly over Fort Lee during the George Washington Bridge lane closures?
The New York Post reported Monday that New Jersey lawmakers are looking into the question, and want to see records of helicopter rides taken by Christie. Christie traveled to New York City for a Sept. 11 anniversary event last year, and anonymous sources in the governor’s office told the Post that Christie took a ferry to Ground Zero from Jersey City, then flew back to Trenton. The lane closures occurred the week of Sept. 9.
Photographs obtained by media outlets show that at the event Christie spent time with David Wildstein, the former Port Authority of New York and New Jersey executive at the heart of the lane closing scandal. According to the Post, lawmakers want to know if Christie took a helicopter ride with Wildstein, but the newspaper’s sources in the governor’s office said Wildstein was not with Christie on his way back to Trenton on Sept. 11.
Wildstein was not with Christie on his ” way back ” to Trenton on Sept. 11.
This is the same crap he tried to pull when he said he did not know about the lane closures ” before ” they happened.
It is a non answer………and as I said many times….How did they get to NYC if not by helicopter…….
It will hard to scrub off a Helicopter’s official Fight schedule. Hmm?
Drip. Drip. Drip.
I’m not familiar with NJ geography, but I doubt that if matters whether or not Christie got to NY via helicopter.
The lanes were closed at the entrance to the GW bridge, so ALL the traffic tie-up, back-ups, etc. occurred in Fort Lee, not on the bridge. Whatever traffic problems that occurred on the bridge itself on those days in Sept was because of the usual culprits of traffic congestion (too many cars, accidents, etc.).
Is Fort Lee traffic visible in a helicopter from wherever it took off to NY? (I think the helicopter would have been well south of Fort Lee.) Even if the Fort Lee traffic were visible from the helicopter, why would a casual observer care?
I’m in the LA area, and whenever I fly into LA I usually try for a window seat. I love looking at the traffic patterns below, but when we approach from the east, I could not tell you which freeways and cities we’re over until we’re right at LAX.
Rachel had a very detailed report on the helicopter flight with a map on tonight’s show.

CNN’s legal correspondent Jeffrey Toobin reports that the court’s conservative wing appeared skeptical of the Obama administration’s arguments in favor of the individual mandate provision of the Affordable Care Act.
“This was a train wreck for the Obama administration. This law looks like it’s going to be struck down,” Toobin said on CNN. “All of the predictions including mine that the justices would not have a problem with this law were wrong.”
“The only conservative justice who looked like he might uphold the law was Chief Justice Roberts who asked hard questions of both sides, all four liberal justices tried as hard as they could to make the arguments in favor of the law, but they were — they did not meet with their success with their colleagues,” Toobin said.

Susan Rice is with him…
A Former FL GOPers has said: See Ya :!:
Former Florida Rep. Ana Rivas Logan announced her plans to leave the GOP and register as a Democrat, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
“The GOP of today is not the party I joined,” she said. “It’s not the party of my parents. It’s a party that has been radicalized and held hostage by a group of extremists.”
Is she up for re-election or something? Who’s her Dem opponent? It sounds like someone who’s been staring at the exit signs all these years, but just now decides it’s time to actually go through the door. Hmmm, the signs have been there since 2008/2009, why the speedy retreat?
If there’s a Dem opponent, I hope the voters put the real Dem in office and not reward this Josephine Come Lately.
No. She is a Former Rep. If she runs again, my guess is that she would as a Dem. The speculation as charged by FL GOPers is that Crist might pick her as his running mate. I hope it isn’t true…..having 2 former GOPers as Gov and Lt Gov is a tad too much.
Crist has his own agenda, but I can tolerate him and give him credit for leaving his party immediately. This person hung around too long under her crazy party banner to suddenly realize they’re nuts. I wonder if she spoke out against all the stuff that was going on in Fla. with Crist’s supposed schmoozing of PBO? If she didn’t speak out on the atrocities of her former party, then all I can appreciate about her is her vote, that is if she will vote Dem.
If Crist chooses her for anything, then he’ll have to turn in his Dem creds.
Sorry, Nena. Had not refreshed so I didn’t see your post.
A good read:
We will see more of this:
“Former Florida Rep. Ana Rivas Logan announced her plans to leave the GOP and register as a Democrat, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
Charlie Crist, who served a term as Florida’s governor as a Republican and is now running again as a Democrat, welcomed Logan to the party.”
Bienvenida @anarivaslogan to the Democratic Party! Glad you are here my friend. elnuevoherald.com/2014/02/09/167…— Charlie Crist (@CharlieCrist) February 10, 2014
So what took her so long? At least Crist bailed on them when they first dissed him. Though for his own agenda, he immediately left the party and went Independent. I’m suspicious of this Florida Rep. Ana Rivas Logan person, who is just now deciding during this 2014 mid-term election year that her party is not sane.
No problem, Doc. Your post is better with a Tweet from Crist ;)

May I add the following exchange?
POTUS: Super bien.
Hollande: T’es chanceux.
Here’s the webpage of the Mayor of Charlottesville, and his impressive background:
Hey Chips, you have no reason …..yet…..to complain about Danny-O.
Huh, he’s half the size of Danny
Better get him his own couch then, before he squashes you completely.
Have you had to remove the ceiling in your house to accommodate him?
Heard a news report this morning about the gazillionaires and their charitable giving. I think Zuckerberg was the big ‘giver’ last year – because he gave facebook (!) stock.
What shocked me about this report: when you added in all the gazillionaires who made charitable contributions, the total was $8B.
That’s it. $8 billion. Isn’t that a month of costs in Iraq at the height of the unnecessary war? Hey, better that than nothing, but does it feed all the hungry, help people find jobs, contribute to health care in America/?
When you get that big, it used to be that you felt an obligation to your fellow man. Now they’re just sociopaths looking to pay even less taxes.

It’s an election year in New York, which means Jimmy McMillan is running for office again.
Mr. McMillan, the perennial “Rent Is Too Damn High!” candidate who has run for mayor, governor and president, today announced his intentions to run for governor yet again this year.
“Jimmy McMillan is back,” an email from his “Rent Is Too Damn High” party declared. Attached was a file called “Jimmy Mack is back.pdf.”
The McMillan announcement–which did not include a music video, like many of his past runs for office–took direct shots at Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is seeking his second term in office.
“Governor Andrew Cuomo has been a big disappointment to the people in the State of New York. Three (3 ½) years of sitting in Albany the Governor are yet to address and resolved the most critical issues dealing with the People and State,” Mr. McMillan declared. “He must go!”
Sometimes I think I’ve slept for a while, done some time travel, backwards, and woke up to hear comments on the teevee like “asking the question if the league is ready for a gay player.” And all the other conversations that abound.
It’s 2014, folks. The 21st Century. I feel as though we need to remind ourselves of that, each and every day.
Breaking : Employer Healthcare Mandate being delayed an additional year.
Is this good ?
No, I don’t think so. It delays money going into the coffers for employers who aren’t compliant.
Let remember, they’ve had since 2010 to implement the changes.
It’s bad p.r. and bad policy, IMO.
