Michelle Obama lifts up U.S. designers, elegantly around her shoulders

    By Robin Givhan

    ————————————–

First lady Michelle Obama eschewed Chanel, bypassed Dior and said no to the allure of Balenciaga. Instead, as she stood alongside her tuxedo-clad husband to greet French President François Hollande, she celebrated American style at Tuesday night’s state dinner in honor of fashion’s heartland.

She selected a ballgown by the New York-based designer Carolina Herrera. The bodice of the dress, which was sewn by hand in Herrera’s New York atelier, was crafted of black lace — beaded, embroidered and appliqued. It formed a delicate scrim over a corset in a pale, dusty blue that the designer described as “liberty blue.” The elegant skirt, with its inverted pleats, flowed into a modest train.

The weather is eerily calm (but COLD) right now. The calm before storm… Way too many this winter. We are FED.UP.

    • February 12, 2014 at 8:15 am

Good morning all. Hf2, calm here too……right now. Though what we’ve had doesn’t compare to many others all across the country, it’s been a long, cold, dreary winter here too. I think many of us are FED.UP.

Good day to all. Stay safe and warm. My recovery continues to go GREAT! So grateful!!!!!!

Good morning. I’m sure this has been said a million times, but I’m just tuning in. Michelle Obama is one of the most beautiful and stunning women in the world and last night she looked better than any movie star on any red carpet in the world. Her escort wasn’t too shabby either. What a glorious couple. Despite all of Hollande’s amours, I bet he was eating his heart out with jealousy over the president’s First Lady.

      February 12, 2014 at 8:34 am

      Good morning jackiegrumbacher,

      Happy Wednesday to you!

Totally agree. They were stunning last evening.

Good Morning America “briefly” talked about the 1st lady and how beautifully she was dressed. They were speaking to the WH Correspondent, I don’t remember his name. Now, they could have ended the conversation on the note, that it was a wonderful event.

Instead, George Stephanopolis (can’t spell his name-too early) and this guy brought up the cost of the State Dinner; State Dinner cost tax payers $200,000 plus for Germany, State Dinner cost tax payers $500,000 plus for India. Then George stated that this (current State Dinner) is a HUGE cost, and the tax payers have to pay for this dinner.

It is always about the President costing the tax payers. Of all the beauty that our 1st family brings, they intentionally left viewers with the image of this HUGE tax bill that we have to pay because the 1st family hosted the State Dinner.

Never fails, and they (GMA) have no problem speaking highly of Prince William and Kate. This morning, it was all about some necklace that she wore (borrowed from the queen), a Cartier diamond, but the President is costing tax payers.

How can you not be proud of the family that represents the United States with such beauty, charm, class, dignity and elegance?

Fox will probably focus on the cost; the burden that the President has put on the tax payers because they had the audacity to have a State Dinner.

The media never fails; always stealing the good that President Obama and Mrs. Obama represents : (

        February 12, 2014 at 8:40 am

Cindy, the hell with all of them. Every president since time immemorial has hosted state dinners for important allies and nobody complained abut it until Barack Obama was president. These dinners are built into the budget of the White House and don’t cost anybody “extra.” If they want to focus on costs, I wish they would look at the salaries, benefits and perks the members of the US House get for doing nothing. Anybody bring up the question of cost just tell them how proud you are that our president and First Lady project such a positive image of the US to the world. This is ALL about depressing Democrats and discouraging the vote. The WANT a Republican takeover of DC. Tune them out and keep fighting.

        February 12, 2014 at 8:40 am

        George can bite me. http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2014/02/11/good-question-why-do-white-house-state-dinners-cost-so-much/

Congress appropriates money to the U.S. Department of State for these state visits. In 2012, U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) for a detailed list of these costs and expenses. According to Issa, the State Department didn’t respond.

        snip/

Each president’s style had a different effect on how many state dinners were held. For example, President Ronald Reagan hosted 35, President George H.W. Bush hosted 21 and President Bill Clinton hosted 19 dinners. But after 9/11, President George W. Bush only hosted six official dinners at the White House, often preferring smaller dinners at his ranch in Crawford.
“Think of it as taking out customers, the way the U.S. takes out a key ally,” said Larry Jacobs, the Walter and Joan Chair for Political Studies at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs. He says other countries pay for and roll out the red carpet when Obama goes abroad.
Generally, the State Department also picks up the lodging and travel tab for a small foreign delegation, just as other countries do the same for a U.S. president.
“I think diplomacy is really important,” McBride said. “I think there’s nothing that substitutes for the one-on-one and face-to-face dialogue with a world leader.”

They know the truth desertflower but they go the extra mile to create controversy about President Obama. They just refuse to accept that this man, our President, was elected by the people and he is doing great things for America. I just wanted to throw a shoe at George and this guy.

George, I won’t try to spell that name of his, but George has become alittle weasel. How many State Dinners did Clinton have, GW Bush, Reagen. I don’t recall the short weasel running his mouth about what the State Dinners cost the taxpayers then. I am glad I missed GMA.

        Good Morning TODers.

I listened to C-SPAN last night and since Ronald Reagan here is what they had to say:

Reagan had 35 State Dinners in 8yrs.

GHW Bush had 21 State Dinners in 4yrs.

Clinton has 19 State Dinners in 8yrs.

GW Bush had 6 Dinners in 8yrs.

Pres Obama had 6 State Dinners in 4yrs.
Last Night was the 7th, but the 1st in his Second Term.

George Stephanopoulos Should report in Context with Content.

C-SPAN also said that when Mrs. Obama met with the former 1st ladies……since she had not been a Gov’s wife, Nancy Reagan advised her to have as many State Dinners as possible. Since Nancy had 35 in 8yrs……perhaps she was looking for as Big a Spender as she was…….an Obvious statistic George S. could have easily made…….(minus the Lies in cost)……since his former boss Clinton had 19 state Dinners in 8yrs.

      • February 12, 2014 at 11:15 am

I saw this on GMA and was FURIOUS! But, I’m pretty sure we have to spare George what’s-his-name. It was, no surprise at all, Jonathan Karl, the right wing abc mole who ended his State Dinner report with the cost of the last two, and his assurance that the cost of this one will be even more, all at the tax-payer’s expense. I yelled F You at the tv and terrified my poor old dog : ( I am livid that that man is still employed by abc.

      • February 12, 2014 at 7:22 pm

Someone needs to go into the Archives and find GS commenting on a prior President at a state dinner. It will most likely have no comment about the cost of the dinner. Maybe one of Rachel or Lawrence’s famous side by sides.

San Diego is filled with the military and retirees that still believe the RW propaganda that Republicans support them. It’s bullshit, flat out…we know this for a fact…but they haven’t figured it all out yet. If Filner had ethics, maybe the tide would have turned. He did more damage to Dems than he knows. What a shame.

Yes, I checked that too and came to share, but you desertflower got here first. Not the result we were looking for but the newsreports said POTUS and Gov. Brown came in late with their endorsements.

Last minute endorsements seem to mean that the candidate is losing.
Barbara Buono said that Debbie WS came in late and it was “like she was coming to a funeral.”

        February 12, 2014 at 8:51 am

I don’t think it would have mattered. San Diego tried their little “Dem experiment” with Filner and the idiot poisoned the well for Dems in the mayor’s office. End of story. San Diego is a military town through and through…including a boatload of retirees that still believe the lie that Republicans take care of the military. Sad.

I live in San Diego, and yes Filner did poison the well for us. We are not red, but not blue either. There is a lot of minorities here that helped Filner win (and who worked hard to see that he did), but once he embarrassed us the energy was just not there.
Dems seem to be there own worst enemy at times.

GOPers have TX and FL control. That is the 2nd and soon to be the 3rd largest states respectively. Once TX and FL are visibly no longer winnable states for the GOP…….their 180 will be so obvious.

We are in the middle of a fight for the 2014 midterm election. It just makes me mad that they want to throw Hillary down our throats as though we don’t have a choice or a vote.

Rand the crazy man Paul is running around calling Billary a pedophile and this is 2014. We are going to have to listen to this crap for 3 years. I want to choose my President, and it’s not Hillary. I don’t understand the Dems, pushing this as though President Obama 2nd term is over.

What I care about at this time and moment that we are in; supporting President Obama and working my rear end off for 2014. Everything else is in the closet.

      The party of financial responsibility

“North Carolina was wrong in taking this step and as a result it has wastes hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not millions, in court time, counsel fees, and state resources. That is money that could go to a better purpose than trying to favor one set of citizens over another in a political debate. This is one of the most conservative circuits in the country and its rejection (under such conservative iconic rulings as Citizen’s United) should be an even greater embarrassment for those who approved not only this litigation but advanced this extreme argument in the federal courts.”

The New Conservative Assault on Early Voting
The goal is to make the electorate smaller as well as more Republican.
    By Richard L. Hasen

It is easy to dismiss the latest conservative rants against early voting as just one more way for Republicans to try to gain advantage over Democrats at the polls. But something much more troubling may also be at work: Some opponents of early voting are promoting the view that a smaller (and skewed) electorate is better for democracy.

In the past few weeks, a flurry of conservatives have attacked early voting, from Eugene Kontorovich and John McGinnis in Politico to George Will in the Washington Post to J. Christian Adams in the Washington Times. The timing is no coincidence: The Presidential Commission on Election Administration, which President Obama created to look at issues with long lines and other election problems, recently issued its much-anticipated report. The report is full of many sound suggestions for improving our elections, and one of the key recommendations is to expand early voting, either in person, through absentee ballots, or both. There’s good reason to follow the commission’s recommendation: Early voting takes pressure off administering the vote on Election Day. It helps avert long lines and aids election administrators in working out kinks. Voters like early voting because it lets them pick a convenient time to vote, when there are not work or child-care conflicts.

And, we know, if his mistress had come with him, HuffPo would have bent all out of shape comparing FLOTUS with her style-wise. As it was, we all just got to glory in our glorious FLOTUS!

54,000 have lost power here in GA….

My bamboo trees are bent over and frozen to the ground.

The subpoena did not ask that…..they wanted the travel records to find out where he was and who he was with during the shutdown days.

Hopefully, a new post will come up soon so I don’t get jumped on by too many people. But I really did not like FLOTUS’ hair style last night.

      Good morning japa21,

      Happy Wednesday to you!

Don’t be scurred : ) to voice your opinion.

We are all adults in the room, and we can agree to disagree, even when one of us is completely and undeniably wrong : )

      Have a WONDERFUL DAY!!!!

japa21, no one will jump on you because you didn’t like FLOTUS hair style. We have a right to our opinion, as long as it is said respectfully and not like those haters who make those terrible hateful comments just to be ugly. But I disagree with you, but you still are okay. You are still part of the family, we won’t kick you out. :)

    Good Morning TODVille,

How is everyone this morning? I woke up as if I had gone to a party last night… What a nice day it was for our First Family!

This morning is back to business. The business of more snow, more ice, more freezing weather. I am told to expect something in the order of 8-10 inches of the white stuff, some dry, some ice. I just don’t know about this winter. Something went wrong in Nature’s calendar.

I am swooning!! My two home countries!!! The food! The fashion! The beauty! Mrs. Obama was stunning in her French blue. I loved the toasts that both Presidents gave….we have always enjoyed a special friendship with France and it pained me during those stupid Freedom Fries era. Great to see President Hollande & President Obama solidifying the friendship and respect.
