    Even if you aren’t into hockey you might want to tune into NBC Sports Net (down with the other sports channels named NBCSN) as they are replaying the OT win against Russia. OT is coming up in to 2 minutes. Even God is watching the replay! :)

    2 Simple requests:

    - each time someone doubts Sec Kerry’s commitment to a sustainable environment, please remind them that he was an unapologetic environmentalist before it was common or fashionable (was even present at the formulation of the Kyoto Protocols); so he can be trusted to make environment-related diplomatic or energy-development decisions after honest fact-based analysis;

    - please take some time to listen to this climate change speech delivered by Sec of State Kerry – it is getting great reviews so far;

      Sadder if people changed their vote because they believed him. Seemed to be much “I’m all right jack” in the article I read about why folks were voting against the union.

      I belonged to a union for most of my working life – it wasn’t activist – was extremely sexist in its attitudes – but when push came to shove – despite taking 4 years – it did force our employer to give the women workers equal pay. In the 80s when the government fought against unionism and membership dropped away I was aghast – and in the 21st century it all started to happen – no pay rises, conditions fought for over 100 years starting to disappear.

        I can’t see the UAW just rolling over. There would probably have to be a complaint made or a union grievance filed. Maybe the Fair Labor Standards Act would come in.

    please bear with me – this is long but I think it is important;

    As a Ugandan by birth and descent, my attention is raised each time Uganda appears in the news.

    Today, my eyes caught this tweet from National Security Advisor, Dr. Susan Rice;

    Of course I had to pause, read it, try to find out the details and of course respond if so needed;

    As usual, a few responses were trying to side with the anti-LGBT legislation, using putin’s argument of US should not meddle in the affairs of other countries – so I had to check these people too;

      it is important to know that contrary to what is reported in most media, Uganda (as most African countries) have always had LGBT people living their lives quietly.

      Demonization of the LGBT community is now either :

      (a) following putin’s play book (to use them as a political weapon and divert attention from miserable political and economic conditions – a tool for political manipulation and misery-diversion;

      (b) as means for politicians to earn easy money from foreign conservative religious groups who are seeking to expand their congregations – simply for money in change of religious outreach ;

        Here is brief extract from the NYT story;

        Obama Condemns Uganda’s Tough Antigay Measure

        RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. — President Obama on Sunday condemned a measure to criminalize homosexuality in Uganda, publicly warning the country’s president that such discrimination could harm its relationship with the United States.
        President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda signaled on Friday that he was likely to sign a bill that would punish the “the promotion or recognition” of same-sex relations with as much as life in prison.

        “As we have conveyed to President Museveni, enacting this legislation will complicate our valued relationship with Uganda,” Mr. Obama said in his statement.

        The bill, Mr. Obama added, “will be more than an affront and a danger to the gay community in Uganda.”
        “It will be a step backward for all Ugandans and reflect poorly on Uganda’s commitment to protecting the human rights of its people,” the president said.

        ……….

        Mr. Obama’s national security adviser, Susan E. Rice, who accompanied the president on his trip, announced that she had spoken “at length” with Mr. Museveni on Saturday evening to discourage him from signing the bill.

        ————-

        Under the proposed law, a first conviction could result in a 14-year prison sentence, and subsequent convictions of “aggravated homosexuality” could lead to a life term.
        The bill passed by the Ugandan Parliament in December is a modified version of a 2009 proposal that included death sentences. It was withdrawn after an international outcry.

        For the full story, please
        Source:

        http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/17/world/africa/obama-condemns-tough-antigay-measure-in-uganda.html?_r=0

        when you respond to this, remember that museveni is one of those dictators who took power in 1986 through armed struggle (in which hundreds of thousands were killed in the Luweero Triangle – skeletons still abound in this now neglected area) promising a new Uganda.

        Of course, once in power, he changed the constitution so many times and has refused to relinquish power as he grooms his son (sadam-style) and permits fake elections to keep the international community quiet;

        museveni is also responsible for the mass killing of people in regions of the country that don’t support him, arming rebel groups in neighboring countries;

        he has given the national wealth to himself and his family under the guise of privatization;

        the worst part of it all is that he and his conniving ruthless wife now profess to be born-again Christians using religion in much the same way as we see the US rightwing doing;

        once bush dangled money to them, they decided to reverse a once-admired comprehensive HIV/AIDS program to pushing HIV/abstinence only ;

        with the guidance and funding of US conservatives and their churches, they have been writing and pushing this anti-LGBT law;

        the sponsors/advocates of the Uganda anti-LGBT law are local pastors who are using US-generated money from to amass huge personal fortunes;

        so each time you hear the story about this law, remember to follow the money – this is what I was referring to in my response to Speaker Pelosi (conservative US culpability);

        we should challenge those who use money as means to fuel local and/or export US-generated bigotry and discrimination;

          Wonderful and informative post – GWB pushing abstinence as a solution to aids was despicable – Uganda turning on its people is so very sad.

            a fact to remember is that current claims are that HIV/AIDS was first identified in Uganda – and for a while was the epicenter of infections and deaths;

            Uganda’s population has been devastated by the HIV/AIDS epidemic, creating many orphans and destroying a whole generation of its professional class;

            many of us have lost numerous family members and friends and most of us personally know someone who is infected;

            until bush’s interference with abstinence-only crap, Uganda had one of the most celebrated HIV/AIDS prevention programs that had led to common acceptance, reduction in stigma and a corresponding reduction in infection rates;

            with abstinence-only there has been a notable increase in new infection – something that has been reduced!

            • 96 99ts
              February 16, 2014 at 9:14 pm

              I had never heard of abstinence as a solution to aids – nor as a sex education topic – until I started following the US Presidential election in 2008. I was/am utterly stunned that a developed country could ever follow such a path. That they would enforce it onto countries that were so in need of prevention/cures for HIV/AIDS is yet another reason for the disaster of the court intervention in 2000.

              • 97 globalcitizenlinda
                February 16, 2014 at 9:49 pm

                as person who deal with the HIV/AIDS epidemic consequences in so many devastating ways, this is one of the reason I despise ALL religious leaders and congregations that support and fund this crap;

                in my culture, we bury at the paternal grandfather’s place for each generation;

                hence you can see the lines of graves of people with lifetimes inscribed to be in the age range of 15 to 55 (and their AIDS-infected new born and young kids) ;

                it is an unforgettable image/sight of death in a family;

                in the villages, child-headed households or orphans crowding their grandmother’s little dwelling – no national child-wellfare infrastructure and low standard and often questionable private orphanages;

                receiving death notices of family and friends make you an expert in composing condolence messages;

                had to leave my church in the US because of this anti-condom, anti-LGBT, anti-Obamacare, anti-choice crap so that I could worship in a more in keeping with what I had been taught;

                together with the Iraq war lies, this use of religion to destroy communities is why I doubt I could ever forgive GWB

    A quick note to Meta, Susanne, and Nerdy Wonka

    - Meta, cast my vote via Twittter logon for Pastry Studios! I have another twitter alias, but looks like I will need to clear my cache before casting “her” vote for you too.
    - Susanne thanks for alerting TODville!
    - NW, thanks for highlighting this contest for one of our community — we’ll be on the edge of our seats all week!

    Looks like our President has a jam-packed schedule this week. Can’t imagine how he does it.

    The North American leaders summit is on the first anniversary of PBO’s initial foreign trip to Canada, a trip I remember oh-so-well. Loved the Canadian online coverage, especially the blog that said that PBO practically had to drag Harper out to wave to the freezing crowd. PBO was in his element, Harper not so much.

    Saw a couple tweets that PBO plans on some trash talk with Harper on this anniversary… this time between USA and Canada Hockey Teams at the Soshi Olympics. If I can locate, will post here later.

    Have a great President’s Day, everyone!

        It *was* your tweet that reminded me, Alycee ;) – I was/am trying to catch up on the posts I missed earlier today. I usually find catching up ‘painful’ as I feel so out of the loop, and not being a good multi-tasker I can never keep up with the current post while checking out the previous. Woe is me! :( ;)

            ‘I simply meet the group where they are at’

            Definitely the smarter choice, Alycee! Unfortunately I’m the nosy type, so when someone makes reference to something I don’t ‘get’, I have to go back and look for the precursor. :roll:
