    PRIORITIES USA PAC — 2014 vs 2016

Here ya go PF, this should be required viewing. The obsession with Hillary Clinton and 2016 is just astonishing when so much hinges on the results of the 2014 midterms. It is hard to believe this is happening after the disaster of the 2010 midterms.

    THE LAST WORD 02/18/14

    ——————————————–

    2014 already a fundraising battle

Republicans, with the help of the Koch brothers-backed Americans for Prosperity, are getting a big cash advantage over Democrats in the 2014 midterm races.

At least, I’m almost ready if I don’t need any beach wear, etc. etc. Have to confess I forgot to check the weather report for Mexico before retiring last night.

Good morning Chips and all. Freezing rain today that’s supposed to add a crust of ice to the existing snow and make driving (even more) hazardous. Went out to the county courthouse yesterday and got petitions, which we now have until March 11 to complete. I’m very concerned about the brutality in the Ukraine. Hope the EU and US take some swift economic action against Yanukovych.

Honestly, Global, I don’t know how he can do it. He must have amazing reserves of strength. I would be incoherent with fatigue half way through the day.

I see there’s some prickly issues re. this Mexico trip—-trade agreements opposed by some Dems, including Pelosi, Van Hollen and Reid—–and the expectation that Harper will press on the Keystone Pipeline. Have learned to wait to see how PBO navigates these issues before I fret.

Some things never change – when I was at school 1950s/60s – our history of Australia was all about white settlers – I remember 1 page in a history book about the original Australians. Add to that – 90% of our history lessons related to the UK and Europe – about all we learned about the US was the war of independence followed by the civil war. The history I learned at school seemed to revolve around wars.

The comments on that link are very good – 100% suitable picture of PBO :) – It’s one I’ve seen on TOD.

It’s so disheartening that history like that is universal. It’s always about the dominant race and culture and everyone else is meant to go fend for themselves. History in schools, is 99.9% taught on the shallow level. One is lucky to find that rare teacher who cuts through the nonsense and teaches students the true history of their country; a history that includes all people. One is also lucky if one takes the initiative to take some culture classes while in college (if one’s college offers them).

I watch Jeopardy and these students and other competitors study everything from Presidents to obscure creatures to types of candy but can’t be bothered to study about Black history especially during Black History Month and knowing that Jeopardy loves asking questions about everything from cultural months to months society has labeled as fight against cancer month, heart healthy month, world AIDS day, etc.

NW, our education system really stinks when it comes to history. It is always about men who are either kings, presidents or generals. You would think that no other people existed in the world except for these “guys.” In my day, we learned that all scientific discoveries were made by men and men alone fought all the battles. On the other hand, because we actually celebrated Lincoln’s birthday on February 12, our NY schools learned a little more about the Civil War than just the battle highlights. And many of us who were interested explored that era more deeply. Schools closest to NYC, as ours was, were always integrated and less “overly” racist than others of that long ago era. But most of us still graduated from high school as dumb as dirt when it came to the real history of the US and the world.

ABC, GMA, CNN, etc., are all despicable for calling the Dunn trial, the “Loud Music Murder Trial.” Especially in the presence of Jordan Davis’s parents. It’s disgusting and dishonors the life of Jordan Davis.

Sometimes, our media really sickens me.

    • February 19, 2014 at 8:57 am

I know it’s probably been discussed over the weekend, but besides the fact that we’re talking about a state with a SYG law that some people feel gives them the license to shoot and kill anyone they take an aversion too, I find it astonishing that a jury could not find this man guilty of murder. At a minimum, I think he should have been found guilty of second degree murder. Self defense should have not even come into play.

NW, our media sickens me all the time. All of them are corporate whores and it would be my great joy if all Americans woke up, recognized the poison on the airwaves and turned everyone of them off. It amazes me that young people even bother with the corporate media. Some of the old folks watch out of habit and don’t understand what’s happened in the last twenty years. I think there should be warning notices on every ‘so-called’ news or pundit show. “Watching this show may be hazardous to your brain.”

We are part of the news generation….always faithfully watched, every evening. Then….two things happened…..Our TV is in our sunroom, right next to our main living room with a fireplace. That room is not on the central heating system, but has a heater/cooler in it. Last winter, we never had to use the heater. This winter has been cold, and the room is cold. The heater is too loud to have on while we watch TV. Then, our TV is going out, the picture is dim and hard to see. So…….for the past two weeks or so we haven’t even turned on the TV in the evening. It’s been lovely. We get all the news from here, and from the L.A. Times, which is my husband’s home page on his computer, and my husband listens to NPR in his car. This no TV in the evening has been wonderful!!!!

Carolyn, I am of that generation as well. But I stopped watching any tv news the moment that Reagan defeated Carter. I would not look at that man’s face or hear his voice because I utterly detested him. Before the internet, I read several newspapers a day, trying to glean information. Now there is a cornucopia at my fingertips, TOD being stopping place #one.

    This is truly disgusting

About a dozen years after its removal as the centerpiece of the Georgia state flag, the Confederate battle emblem is back — in a big, though slightly faded way.

The Sons of Confederate Veterans have had custom license plates before, featuring the square symbol of its organization, as seen below. But here’s the newest version, with the St. Andrews flag spanning the plate, that just won state Department of Revenue approval on Feb 1:

Allison, these people are frightened. They see change coming, are terrified of it and are reaching back to old symbols to reassure themselves. Georgia will one day grow up and be heartily ashamed of its racist past, but that day hasn’t come.

Jackie, I’m hoping to see that day really soon. What amazes me is that Nate Deal claims he had no idea this was happening!!??? Just as he claimed he had no idea it was going to snow a few weeks ago which stranded people on the highways. He’s up for reelection. Have to vote him out.

I read the article, then the comments. I was assuming they would be worse than they are. Both pro and con wrote, and I thought…..this is a better forum than taking a gun to someone! The funny (pathetic) ones are the one or two who are sure the “South will rise again as soon as the Yankee carpetbaggers go home.” As you say, they are truly delusional and frightened. Fear really warps people.
