Yep, the temperature is easing up here and the permafrost seems to be melting on our steps. We gave up trying to pound through the ice and put a ‘don’t use’ sign on the outside stairs since I had visions of mail carriers flying off with broken legs and backs. Took us two hours to get our second car out of the ice and snow because the tires had literally frozen to the ground. We boiled hot water, used a hammer and chisel, shoveled, and pushed until it finally moved. Of course, the old bones and muscles are screaming today. Enough!

Oh, my gawd Jackie, what an ordeal, it sounds like you’re in the Arctic circle. Relieved to hear your temperatures are easing up, fingers and toes crossed for them to keep on rising. Look after yourself out there!

This has been such a nightmare, Jackie. I’m in so much pain today and I can’t imagine how Mr 57 is going to feel today after hacking through ice and shoveling troughs through the snow and ice for drainage all day yesterday. And now it’s raining. A lot.

Gun rights advocates in Georgia pushing for right to carry guns in churches…

    =====

“Guns in churches? Not yet. Case moves forward”

    http://www.ajc.com/news/news/local/guns-in-churches-not-yet-case-moves-forward/nQjc4/

    —–

Gun rights advocates have gained ground for Georgians to carry guns in more and more public places in Georgia, and a federal judge on Monday kept alive their effort to allow people to carry firearms into churches.

If successful, the lawsuit to allow licensed gun owners to carry firearms into churches would be another victory for Georgia gun rights advocates. They have succeeded in recent years in securing rights to carry guns on MARTA, in certain bars, and in school parking lots.

    ———

This Toon aptly depicts the negatives of such a move:

SW, it’s a pitiful person who has to carry a gun to feel safe in the world. They are literally so frightened of living that they need constant protection. I would not want to be inside the skin of someone that terrified and paranoid. How much better to embrace the world with love and acceptance than walk around with so much fear that your only thought is to use violence against other people.

            • February 20, 2014 at 9:31 am

Even considering allowing guns in places where mental and emotional states are dynamic or unstable is negligent. Allowing guns in a bar?!?!?! Really?!?!?! In a world where there seems to be less and less regard for human life, guns should be allowed in fewer places; not more.

I was in a terrorized situation in church mass one Sunday years ago during the Easter season. Just after the sermon a man walked down the aisle quickly holding a gas can sat in the front pew kneeled and silently prayed while our priest continued with the mass. The man got up and noticibly stormed out of the church. The Father signaled to one of the ushers to follow him. I am sure more than just myself were praying for our safety. I visualized that guy dumping gasoline around the church and setting it on fire. If he had a gun he may have just started killing us.

I’m not upset this week. As long as Meta makes it into the first FIVE I’m okay, and I don’t really want us to ruffle Welcome Home’s feathers until next week when it really matters. She isn’t even savvy enough to know that lighting up her ‘home’ so thoroughly is an indication that she’s not environmentally with it; in the 21stC that excessive use of power is more alarming than welcoming.

The GAP is an SF company that enjoyed great success over the decades. They’ve been through huge downsizing periods and then some diversifying by opening Banana Republic, Old Navy, Piperlime, Athleta and Intermix. They still have been struggling a bit in recent years but are picking up nicely. Let’s see how things go in the future due to the fact that they are recognizing they need to step up. The whole “self defense/fear for life” defense needs to be held to a higher standard. A person who puts themselves in a position to supposedly fear for their life (e.g., Zimmerman following Trayvon Martin, Michael Dunn approaching the teens about their loud music) should not be allowed to claim it as a defense. If a person can easily remove themselves from a situation — especially in a public place — they should not be allowed to claim self defense or fear of life. One of the first questions in claiming self defense or fear of life is whether your personal property (house, car, etc.) has been invaded.

The fact that one of the jurors could raise the self defense claim in an obvious case of murder, and that there is so much subjectivity in applying this law shows that the law is not fundamental problems of SYG.

        • 75 99ts
          February 20, 2014 at 9:34 am

The jury instructions in Florida appear to have been taken from the “stand your ground” laws – they basically say you have the right to stay and shoot if you think your life is in danger.

          • 76 Linda
            February 20, 2014 at 9:38 am

As I understand it, SYG is part of the Self Defense law……the only difference is whether the person chooses to invoke a hearing using SYG as a defense….the language of the law does not change one bit.

            • 77 99ts
              February 20, 2014 at 9:48 am

I don’t know enough about it Linda – no doubt you are correct. I simply heard/read the jury instruction that the defense hung their hat on – and it was very much SYG. It seems in Florida if you are going to shoot – make sure you kill.

I live in what I consider – a gun free world. Until the 1980s not even the police in my state carried guns. First time I saw a handgun was in the US in 1978 – and it gave me quite a scare. Of course some people have guns – but gun murders are very rare and mainly by someone close to the victim.

          • February 20, 2014 at 9:49 am

That’s what I mean. Just saying you felt your life is in danger should automatically be accepted as so; just like insanity defenses are not automatically accepted. But then again, it is not applied equally from case to case.

Seriously, given the gun wackos out there I balk at the wisdom of that black man doing this experiment! Sure they made a point, but it’s a point that for many needs no further evidence AND one for which he might well have lost his life. What if some rwnj, or even the cop, had shot him first then listened to explanations later, as so often happens in the U.S? IMO, this was not a smart risk to take.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/20/opinion/the-clear-benefits-of-a-higher-wage.html?hp&rref=opinion&_r=0

Republicans sputtered with outrage when the Congressional Budget Office said that immigration reform would lower the deficit, strengthen Social Security and speed up economic growth. They called for the office to be abolished when it dared to point out that tax cuts raise the deficit or when it highlighted the benefits of health care reform. But now that the budget office has predicted (and exaggerated) the possibility that an increase in the minimum wage might result in a loss of jobs, Republicans think it’s gospel.

“This report confirms what we’ve long known,” said a spokesman for the House speaker, John Boehner. “While helping some, mandating higher wages has real costs, including fewer people working.”

What Republicans fail to mention is that Tuesday’s report from the budget office, a federal nonpartisan agency, was almost entirely positive about the benefits of raising the minimum wage to $10.10 by 2016, as President Obama and Congressional Democrats have proposed.

More than 16 million low-wage workers, now making as little as $7.25 an hour, would directly benefit from the increase, the report said. Another eight million workers making slightly more than the minimum would probably also get raises, because of the upward “ripple effect” of an increase. That would add $31 billion to the paychecks of families ranging from poverty level to the middle class, significantly increasing their spending power and raising the nation’s economic output and overall income.

In fact, the report said, 900,000 people would be lifted from poverty with a wage increase. The income of those below the poverty line would increase by a total of $5 billion, or 3 percent, at no cost to the federal budget.

Every last media pundit is soooo mad because PBO is still there winning! They seem incapable of seeing the disaster the GOP will bring to themselves – like the poorest in the backwoods – they think everything will be good – because others are worse off than themselves.

      • February 20, 2014 at 10:16 am

I’m extremely worried and freaked out about how backwards and upside-down this is. With so very many focused on an HRC victory in 2016, we are shooting ourselves in the foot. I don’t know how they could possible be so willfully ignorant. If we lose both the House and the Senate, we will not only be fighting for our lives but sending precisely the wrong message to the nation and the world. THIS IS SERIOUS.

        • February 20, 2014 at 10:26 am

Someone in one the posts on yesterday said that HRC and Bill should be urging PAC’s to concentrate on winning Democratic seats in the House and Senate in 2014. I agree.

I somewhat believe that the decision(s) made by these PAC’s are to some degree dictated by HRC and Bill (or at least based on what is perceived to be their desire or whim). That makes me wonder what exactly is being communicated to these PAC’s such that they do not seem to give significant weight to the seriousness of the 2014 elections.

To me Hillary waits until she can test the winds to see which way to go to get the most votes. This is true of many politicians. PBO has a compass of his own based on his convictions. He will take in all info he can get then make a decision. His waiting is different as the decision is based on what is best for us not him.

    UNFIT TO GOVERN

    Minimum wage advances without Congress

    By Steve Benen

    ——————————-

It’s been over a year since President Obama began pushing Congress to act on an overdue increase in the minimum wage, but prospects for action are basically nonexistent – despite overwhelming public support, congressional Republicans won’t budge.

But GOP lawmakers aren’t just out of step with the American mainstream; they’re also sitting idle as much of the country passes them by, unwilling to wait for them to act (and knowing they won’t).
