Deputy Secretary of State William Burns Travels to Turkey and Ukraine

Deputy Secretary of State William Burns will travel to Istanbul, Turkey on February 24, and to Kyiv, Ukraine from February 25 to 26.

In Istanbul, he will meet with Turkish Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Feridun Sinirlioglu to discuss the broad range of bilateral and regional issues on which Turkey and the United States are in regular contact, including the Syria crisis, counterterrorism, and the Cyprus settlement process.

In Kyiv, he will consult with key Ukrainian leaders, the business community, and civil society on U.S. support for Ukraine’s efforts to secure a stable, democratic, inclusive, prosperous future. He will also honor the memory of the victims of the tragic events of last week. He will meet with a range of political, business, and civil society representatives, including Acting President Turchynov, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, and the deputies of the Verkhovna Rada, and will urge the new government to take all steps necessary for free and fair presidential elections in May. He will urge the rapid formation of a national unity government that represents the wide array of stakeholders in Ukraine’s domestic political discourse, and encourage immediate steps to undertake the critical reforms necessary to restore Ukraine’s political and economic health. The Deputy Secretary will be accompanied by representatives of the Department of the Treasury and the National Economic Council, who will work in concert with partners such as the EU and the IMF to discuss needed financial support while a new government implements the difficult steps necessary to reform the economy. The Deputy Secretary will encourage all Ukrainians to continue their efforts to write a new chapter in their history that leads to a Ukraine that is democratic, sovereign, prosperous, and free to choose its own future.

I played the lead in Trip To Bountiful in Chicago a number of years back.

Did they have new-fangled video machines when I played the part? It was one of the highlights of my so-called acting career. I even had agents call me. Of course, I let those opportunities slip by……

        • February 24, 2014 at 4:21 pm

Agents?! 57! We will see you on the red carpet one day!

Unfortunately, to quote the great Meryl Streep, “Memory went with menopause.” I would not trust myself to memorize lines anymore and again to quote Meryl Streep, “and I used to have a PHENOMENAL memory.”

I do want to direct again before I die.

And seriously – the way my job is going today, I may be looking for a new job anyway.

I was never good at the competitiveness of professional acting. I don’t have the heart to be that cutthroat (how’s that for mixing metaphors?)

It’s a beautiful play, with a richly written part for a middle-aged to older actress. Things are better now but when this play was written in the 1950’s, there weren’t a lot of good parts for older actresses.

I can’t wait to see this version. The 1985 movie is wonderful as well. It’s a really great play.

57, I’ve only ever seen the 1985 movie. Geraldine Page was one of the finest actresses of her time. She could wring everything out of any part she played. I’m sure Cicely Tyson will be brilliant in it.

I read where three RWNJ Senators decided the backlash was bad, so they urged Brewer to veto it. Have they definitely pulled the bill?

I just saw on Rev. Al that Arizona suppose to host the Super Bowl next year, the 2015 Super bowl. It would be bad news for them if the NFL were to cancel the Super Bowl.

How much money would Arizona lose if other businesses were to refuse to bring it’s business to Arizona.

‘Sources’ are saying this morning that she will veto. It has more to do with the AZ Chamber of Commerce not wanting to hurt business than it has to be with any morality of right or wrong, but as long as that evil statewide embrace of discrimination goes away, I’m happy.

Maybe the meeting at the WH last week changed some minds. Good.
I’d like to hear from Jim Messina himself rather than from rightwing Maggie or this Buffy person.

    • February 24, 2014 at 6:26 pm

Well, well, well. I guess the pushback was deafening.

Begala is a strategist for Priorities USA. Wonder why he’s not saying this directly.

STUNG? Hmm? Why the heck did it take them over 10 days to reply? The initial reported quotes were attributed to a name with the Priorities USA. So why STUNG?

It never should have been an issue, let alone leaving the Dead Silence until Messina and Co were spotted at the WH on Thursday or Friday last week. At least one of the WHPC pretentious Journo posed two questions to Jay Carney. It took folks like Axelrod tweeting publicly and speaking out loud. It took LOD and may TODers vocally screaming…….10 long days later for Priorities USA to Finally backtracked? Seriously?

Ed have a change of heart about Keystone? At least he’s presenting the other side, interviewing the family in Nebraska who live on a 100 yr. family homestead across the road from where the Trans Canada pipeline will lie. Said if there is a spill/leak/eruption, Trans Canada only has a legal obligation to clean the easement but nothing if their home and property, air and water source was damaged/destroyed. They would have to sue to recover any damages, which would take decades to be decided. Trans Canada is trying to get them to sign off—–offering some undisclosed amount of money, said Trans Canada is the wealthiest corporation in the world, has all the power. They can’t believe they are being threatened with eminent domain, with no benefit to their community, Nebraska or the U.S.

Yeah he has been getting a lot of push back. Also someone mentioned what if China squires the pipeline or what if they file bankruptcy like Freedom & Patriot coal companies did.

On a conference call. Some politicians actually ask “Why don’t you charge for library service?”

    • 76 0388jojothecat
      February 24, 2014 at 7:34 pm

You do..its called taxes. You also charge to use computers, copy machines, etc. In Pasadena we voted that all property owners are taxed $5 that goes toward libraries. I swear there seems to be a library on every block. I love that we have so many libraries for students, seniors and parents with children. All our libraries are busy no matter what day or time you go there.
