At times like these, I despise the hair on fire hysteria that overtakes rational thinking. War has not been declared yet some are acting as though WWIII is taking place right now.

The Kremlin released their version of the phone-call with President Obama and President Putin and of course it’s going to be full of spin about how Russia is the victim and Ukraine is the bully. Instead of treating that with the disdain it deserves, one sees folks who should know better, freaking out about how President Obama is so weak, how he didn’t bring the hammer down on Putin. This is coming from Liberals and Conservatives alike.

They haven’t seen the White House’s readout, they weren’t in the meeting but they know everything that went on because they’re the foreign policy “experts.” *Sigh*

I would never wish to be stuck in a foxhole with wishy washy people like that. They’d sell you out to the enemy before you can say Jack.

      I’m with you NW!
“I would never wish to be stuck in a foxhole with wishy washy people like that. They’d sell you out to the enemy before you can say Jack.”

I am glad to see what the President said and I believe he has it well under advisement. Putin has been clearly advised by President Obama as to where the “red line” is and the consequences.

Why do these leaders insisted on trying POTUS? Can’t they take a hint from previous attempts?

Thank you Nerdy Wonka for articulating well what many of us here are thinking. I was literally disgusted by the rubbish being spread based on Russia’s version of the phone-call. I had to push back solidly on a few of them. Sometimes you do have to wonder what is really their agenda in all of this.

      • 24 99ts
        March 1, 2014 at 6:52 pm

My thoughts on the Russian agenda are fairly simple – keeping it that way helps me interpret what is going on.

Their agenda is to claim everything in the Ukraine that they want – it is a rich in resources country in a commanding world view position & Putin/Russia do not want them to form alliances – either economic or political – with the west. There are many other complications – but this is my view.

My thoughts on the US media are also simple – they want to stir up trouble – they are as usual quoting anyone who says “blame Obama” and that would include Putin.

    • March 1, 2014 at 5:57 pm

      Nena,

Did you have a chance to read LL’s Will McAvoy post earlier?

Comparing Ukraine to Georgia is like comparing Jupiter to Earth. Such different countries.

Russia relies on Ukraine for its only (do they have another?) warm water port.

Crimea was part of the Ottoman Empire and its Muslim Tatars were exiled to Central Asia by Stalin — within living memory.

You can see on a map how strategically placed Ukraine is.

In fact, if you’ve ever played the boardgame Risk, most every player wants to control Ukraine because it’s where Europe, Asia and the Middle East come together. Add the “Clash of Civilizations” mentality that neocons burdened us with in the 1990s, it’s truly a scary situation.

The media have played a huge role in framing news as a zero sum game… there is only one winner, everyone else is a loser.

This is apparent in the comment threads on just about every news article I click on. I don’t go out of my way to read the comments, but I see such attacking words against our President.

We are one country. If we don’t hang together we will surely fall apart separately (paraphrasing Ben Franklin).

      Pundits should STFU.

This is a very serious, if not grave situation. Taking sides without knowing all the options and facts helps absolutely no one.

Ukraine is basically the Crimean Khanate in this Wikipedia map of Ukraine:

        March 1, 2014 at 6:31 pm

My point is in 2008, though then sen Obama was for the rights of Georgians…..he Underlined that US has ONE president at a time. McCain went to Georgia and announced that We were ALL Georgians now.

The difference today is that FP was always spoken with ONE Voice and the way the Media in US covers it is a total 180. That is my main point.

Over and over again we go through these types of scenarios where the ignorati (my word) rush to get themselves noticed, and more often than not they haven’t the strength of character to admit they were wrong afterwards. Heck, they haven’t the grace to be embarrassed when they get egg on their faces. They just wait for another opportunity to insert themselves, because as we all know, to get attention you simply need to critique the President or mention his name. You don’t have to have any credibility.

“President Obama’s initiative to boost opportunities for young black men – My Brother’s Keeper – looks to be a post-presidential plan, as much as presidential one. Valerie Jarrett, his closest aide, said that it was a vocation the president and first lady Michelle Obama will undertake “for the rest of their lives…That’s a moral, social responsibility that they feel will transcend the time that he’s president.”

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The philosopher Bertrand Russell wrote that the mark of civilized man was the capacity to weep over a column of numbers. When you look at the data on wealth, health or earnings for black Americans, you get some sense of what he meant. Many of these gaps coalesce into an opportunity gap, visible from the different patterns of intergenerational mobility for black and white Americans. Obama is today highlighting the plight of black men in particular. Here, from a superb report by Bhashkar Mazumder for Pew, is the quintile transition matrix for white boys and men:

Comparing these graphs is like contrasting completely different societies. Black boys raised in families in the bottom fifth of the income distribution have a 40% chance of remaining there as adults. White boys have just an 18% chance of remaining stuck on the bottom rung of the ladder. (It is worth noting the risks for black women are worse still on this score – at 47%.) Perhaps even more startling is the difference in the risks of downward mobility from the top. While 44% of white boys raised in the most affluent quintile stay there as adults, only 24% of black manage to stay on the top rung. Eighteen percent of black boys fall all the way from the top to the bottom of the income ladder – compared to just 5 percent of white boys……”

Foreign Policy the Obama Way: President Urges Dialogue in Call with Putin

    By Sarah Jones

    ——————————-

And here is Obama’s foreign policy in a nutshell. He recognizes the sovereignty of Ukraine. He works with international groups and allies. He pushes for diplomatic solutions. He urges discussion.
    ,
    ,
Contrast Obama’s talk with Putin with the way John McCain pushed for an escalation with Russia today. McCain’s bomb-bomb-bomb stance reflects the neocons of his party, the war hawks, who even as they beat the war drums against Russia, voted against veterans’ benefits.

War is expensive, and not just in money and resources, but in lives. War is not to be entered into lightly. War is a last resort, not the go-to first response.

  22. March 1, 2014 at 6:14 pm

What has been going through my mind all evening is the complexity of multiethnic states of the like you have in eastern Europe or the balkans. I teach my kids in 11th grade history class about subjective and objective nationalism and history of the 19th and 20th century show that in particular countries forged by monarchs (or tyrants) that randomly put together different groups with each their own allegiances and partly inner movements at separation and revolution, do not make for stable places…

I am not drawing parallels here, because I think even though this IS a serious matter, I trust PBO to do the best thing he can here and once more give me reason to feel a little safer just because I know it´s him handling this and not be or god forbid Romney… but 100 years ago, the Balkan states were already a problematic area. A little further south for sure but a cluster of countries left behind by a disintegrating Ottoman Empire with Austria/Hungary hoping to widen their influence and Russia protecting the Slavic part of the Balkan population.

Which btw is an interesting point we should not forget, because I do see a parallel between early 20th century panslawism (the idea that all Slavic people should be united in one country –> Russia) and Putin´s claims at protecting the Russian people.
Not to mention that as I have said before Putin is stuck in a Cold War mindset of muscle play and confrontationalism and widening influence over former satelite states … which makes him a very unfit match to a US president who understands that this is not teh 21st century any more and who very well understands that the years of Russian (or, for that matter: US) macho-ism are and have to be over, because this is not a world with a bipolar power pattern any more. If anything, it´s monopolar, tending to become multipolar again.

          March 1, 2014 at 7:38 pm

Pure idiocy. This guy is saying this stupid shit to get some attention and spread more anti-PBO propaganda. The reason these folks are so desperate to portray Putin in a positive light (ALWAYS at the expense of PBO) really mystifies me. First with the Syria crisis and now this one, they are so DESPERATE to crown Putin the winner. If PBO was as homophobic as Putin they would castigate PBO, why does Putin get a pass? Are these Putin-fan boys so dumb that they think Putin (the former KGB bigshot) is a champion of privacy rights? Why are they so quick to call the man who eliminated Osama Bin Laden and kept this country safe throughout his tenure “weak”. Why does Bill Clinton (the guy who signed DADT and DOMA into law) get feted by the white gay political set and PBO (the President who did more for the gay community than any President in American history) is shunned and criticized? In my opinion, there exists a segment of the political left that is not comfortable having an African American CIC. White supremacy is their “North Star” and the supremely competent, brilliant and smooth PBO threatens their world view. They “want their country back”. Snowden and GG are poster boys for this sect. Just like Rush Limbaugh, they root for America’s/PBO’s failure. They don’t want to suffer personally, but they want the country to suffer for daring to elect PBO President of the United States. This is the same white supremacist mind set that motivates the Tea Partiers.

And they are showing this negative spin to the world – Putin will be very much over confident if he believes the rubbish coming from the pundits on twitter. That ANY serious discussion would revolve around what someone wore on a telephone call – utter b.s.

Totally agree EXCEPT shrub didn’t look like the “Marlboro Man”, looked like your goofy, confused neighbor “helping” the landscaping company. “No, really sir, we can take it from here.”

Hopefruit2: ” These male media pundiots are enraged with jealousy about PBO’s competence, physical attractiveness, intelligence and everything else rolled up in one. So much so that they subconsciously or knowingly identify with Putin (and elevate him vis-a-vis PBO) in other to make themselves feel better”….You really nailed it HF2. These folks need Putin!

What really is “bad optics” here is that we are stuck having to listen to or read their horrifically bad media reports. They are either panicked, sensationalized or just plain wrong. Today they are all three.

And in their usual stupid way the pundits have turned the discussion from the Ukraine to what Presidents wear when making phone calls on a Saturday. Stupid is as stupid does.

You know what I’m REALLY sick of? Men that have low self esteem projecting their inner frustration onto someone who does.

.@TheWarRoom_Tom by my count, 50+ minutes and 70 tweets about the dress code and about how right you are
      ——————————————————————————————-

70 tweets defending his tweet that the President should have put on a suit and tie to make a phone call.

Somebody should tweet this to Tom Nichols so he can stop clutching his pearls and smelling salts.
