the fun has drained out of the game. So has the substance. I used to get excited about the big issues we covered — civil rights, women’s liberation, the fate of the country’s great cities, the end of the Cold War. I loved the politicians who brought those issues to life, from Everett McKinley Dirksen and Howard Baker (Dirksen’s son-in-law, curiously) to Russell B. Long and Edmund Muskie, from Bob Dole to George Mitchell — all people who knew and cared a great deal about governing. Watching them at work was exhilarating. Watching their successors, today’s senators and representatives, is just depressing.

I realized just how depressing last October, when Congress voted on legislation that would raise the debt ceiling — allowing the Treasury to pay the debts Congress had already incurred — and keep the government open. This was exciting, but perversely so. On Oct. 16, 162 members of Congress, 144 in the House and 18 in the Senate, voted “no,” votes meant explicitly to drive their government into bankruptcy, when there was a real chance that their view might prevail. Here was an entirely new style of public service, and it turned my stomach.

Excellent! His sentiments are so representative of my own. Get a spine, dem congressmen! Represent your constituents, back up the legislation you passed, and stop trying to appease!

df, normally i’m completely with you on things, but i didn’t really like this article. sure, he correctly describes republican lunacy, but he can’t stop himself from sneering at democrats too and perpetuating the “both sides suck” storyline, when nothing could be further from the truth. all the stuff he highlights as bad is 100% a creation of republicans and the media that covers for them. taking sheila jackson-lee out of context to imply she’s dumb? spare me. this kind of framing is so destructive in a subtle way, since you start hearing more and more comments such as dee’s above, where democrats allow themselves to feel dejected, when in reality they be the happiest they’ve ever been in generations!

with president obama leading a liberal renaissance not seen since the 1960s at least, in the face of the most obstructionist congress ever, you would think he should be more energized by washington than ever, not dropping out. instead, like a chris matthews ode, he pines for the “good ole days” when all these white man were all so great and worked together. maybe what he’s really feeling is that “his america” is slipping away too, just like republicans feel, if you catch my drift.

    • March 1, 2014 at 12:11 pm

Good Morning DF. I understand completely. I’ve been thinking about this. I never watched as closely as I do now, but I always felt almost everyone was working together to make a better America. When they are elected to federal office they are no longer state representatives, but U.S. Senators and U.S. Representatives. They swore an oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution, not their states, their party, or the bible or a corporation. As Judge Louis D. Brandeis said “The most important political office in America is that of the private citizen.” Let’s Move. 😊

I read this article carefully before posting it to my FB page. While some elements of it felt uncomfortable, and somewhat stretched what is accurate and true, it seemed to me the overall lament is that our ‘leaders’, particularly the GOP and the tp, are in for the money and the power to control others lives according to their own ingrained religious beliefs, rather than the higher values of a proportionate sense of equality and fairness. He fails to separate the fact that there are more than a few in congress who are qualified, and do understand why they have chosen to take office, in both parties. The weight is still in the Democratic party to keep clear on WHO they are there to serve, while we have witnessed the bulk of sheer racism emerging and being cemented in the GOP, for the singular reason that (our beloved) President Obama is a dark-skinned man. Their very engagement in the vows of insurrection are proof of that. As a group, they choose to fail our country, as they choose to see the gift we are granted in the election and re-election of a man who is far beyond their comprehension of compassionate and capable achievement. Barack Obama is a man of the future. Incoming, we will see a fresh perspective, a group of young leaders who are not molds of the outgoing stale ideology. PBO is the example they will follow. For all of us, this is a time of remaining steady in our own Hope, in the center where our own Will is to level the plane of existence for all lives, and to Live that high standard each day, within our own Hearts, and within our own communities. The sense of Goodwill spreads out from each of us, creating a net of kind interaction we may all come to recognise and trust. This is the example being set by both PBO and FLOTUS, a more potent example of human kindness we have seldom seen. Certainly not in politics. It may be that in the decline of the ‘politics of old’, in the very visible want of the current and unproductive players, the seeds of a new political will thrive. Let us not turn away from Hope into fear. Fear is not to be considered when our choices are clear. Once a direction has been revealed, trust in wherever it may lead. Fear cannot follow ~ let us not follow it’s path.

You are the foundation from which all else has sprung and the mortar which continues to hold it together.

The future bride, former future hubby stuff has been fun. But, I say in all seriousness, although we have never met and probably never will, I am proud and happy to consider you a friend.

I am very concerned about what Putin is going to do. Will he really start a war? He is nuts.

Update on all that is happening in Missoula. There has been 1 more small avalanche, it didn’t take out any homes, but they are warning all the people that live near a mountain with more that a 30 degree angle to be prepared for a snow slide. That covers 3 of our perimeters. Right now it is 0 degrees with a wind chill of -30. This is to go till tomorrow afternoon. Needless to say I am staying indoors. Also none of our 3 vehicles will start. We’ll get them going tomorrow. Plan to bake and maybe make some plum jelly.

Gail, if those types of actions don’t happen, fast, and include European Nations refusing to purchase or transport natural gas that flows from Russia through Ukraine, then what leverage exists to prevent all out war will have dissipated.

Don’t know if we have hours, days, a week … when stuff like this has started rolling, in the past, it’s taken decades to recover. However, this is the first time since the Cuban Missile Crisis where the US and, in this case, Russia face off.

putin is a long-time friend of the bush crime family. he has hung out with them at their vacation home fed cryin out loud:

they are leaders in the military industrial complex and some of the biggest war profiteers ever, and have been for generations (also why I cannot give the daughters a pass…they owe their careers and fortunes to this family history). president obama has been driving them crazy by eliminating the various boogeymen these war profiteers have developed over decades. that’s why putin put himself back in power, so that he could start wars if need be, now that president obama has disrupted their plans. look at articles/photos of putin with the bushes and condaleeza rice and so on, compared to how he’s treated president obama. this is the only explanation for this, and it is why we’re seeing this stuff in ukraine and now and what putin was doing with syria.

as soon as putin reappointed himself after president obama and mededyev were making good progress, i knew we’d be seeing these kind of actions in short order. i’m often wrong, but man, was i correct about putin’s plans!

FS Hague on his way to Kyiv in the next few hours ….

Speaking this afternoon Saturday 1 March, Foreign Secretary William Hague said:

I am deeply concerned at the escalation of tensions in Ukraine, and the decision of the Russian parliament to authorise military action on Ukrainian soil against the wishes of the Ukrainian government. This action is a potentially grave threat to the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine. We condemn any act of aggression against Ukraine.

I spoke today to Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov to urge steps to calm this dangerous situation. I told Minister Lavrov that Britain supports the Ukrainian government’s request for urgent consultations in accordance with the 1994 Budapest Memorandum signed by the UK, US, Russia and Ukraine. In the light of President Putin’s request to the Federation Council, we have now summoned the Russian Ambassador to the Foreign Office to register our deep concerns.

I also spoke this afternoon to German Foreign Minister Steinmeier where we agreed on the need for international diplomatic action to address the crisis. The UK supports the proposed emergency meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, and we have already called an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council for this afternoon in New York.

Yesterday I spoke to Ukrainian Acting President Turchynov and made clear the UK’s support for Ukraine’s new government. I urged him to ensure that the government takes measures which unify the country, and that it protects the rights of all Ukraine’s citizens, including those from minority groups, in a spirit of inclusiveness. And I assured him of the UK’s commitment to working with other international partners and institutions to ensure that reforms by Ukraine are matched by international willingness to provide economic support.

I will visit Ukraine on Sunday to discuss these issues directly with the Ukrainian government. I will reiterate the UK’s support for the territorial integrity of Ukraine. I will also discuss how the UK can support the Ukrainian government in recovering improperly acquired assets. The EU must agree urgently an asset freezing regime to target those suspected of laundering the proceeds of corruption. On my instructions, the British Embassy in Kiev has told the Ukrainian government that we stand ready to provide Ukraine with technical advice on asset recovery.”
