Mary Bruce: President Obama Visits NYC, Takes Surprising Shopping Trip To The Gap

Apparently even President Obama knows that New York City is a great place to shop. During a trip to the Big Apple today, the president made a surprise stop at the Gap. Obama checked out some khakis and sweatshirts. A cheery saleswoman talked him through a few options, including a V-neck pink sweater. Obama said he was worried the V-neck would “slip” off his daughter’s shoulders. He ultimately settled on a light pink crewneck for Sasha and a bright pink one for Malia.

A White House official explained the president’s impromptu stop: “In his State of the Union address, the President called for businesses to raise workers’ wages, and today the President will visit a Gap store to show his support for Gap Inc.’s decision to increase wages for their US based employees.” During his visit to the store, Obama also picked out navy blue zip-up workout shirtfor the first lady. The president then greeted the woman behind the counter, who told him he was better looking in person. “You hear that?” The president said to reporters. “I think the ladies will be impressed with my style sense,” the president said as his items were rung up.

It’s reassuring to be reminded that money isn’t everything anymore, as voters have gotten wise to what KOCH and their kind have been up to all these years. Go Crist!

THIS. It would seem that the super wealthy-backed PAC supporters would have learned this when they spent millions in 2012 and Romney ended up giving a concession speech just as we knew he would.

It just occurred to me to wonder, Nena, do you have an excel spreadsheet with the number of times people have won, ….say in the last year? It would be good evidence to support a petition for a TOD Oscar or Super Bowl, or Stanley Cup, or whatever. ;)

Hitting the gym or the park to get some exercise. And it’s nice and warm outside, so people are taking advantage. You will see another surge of posts around 7-8PM….

Lots of reaction in NY to Cuomo’s hiring of a repub strategist and msnbc contributor—Susan del Percio.
“The Joe Lieberman path to the WH” said one comic.

The tactics I’ve been writing about here (manipulating to get the NY Senate into Rep hands) are getting lots of attention now.

Another comic suggested that Cuomo hired del Persio to make sure that his GOP opponent, Rob Astorino, couldn’t get her on board. I guess Susan is a respected operative.

Senator Feinstein needs to focus her outrage on the previous administration that authorized the CIA to check congressional staff computers, as always these people are a day late and a dollar short. I like how all of a sudden their outrage grow balls the size of coconuts when it comes to President Obama.

I agree, Don. What I find surprising is that she’s making so much fuss about it now, but said nothing in the past! I could understand her doing it, if she and the dems in Congress had PBO’s back if/when he addressed(es) the matter, but they’re as likely to line up against him with the GOPTPers, depending on which way the political winds are blowing on a particular day.

    It pains my soul ….

Ukraine will not attempt a military move to prevent the southern Crimean peninsula’s breakaway in order not to expose its eastern border, Ukraine’s acting president Oleksandr Turchynov told AFP Tuesday in an exclusive interview.

“We cannot launch a military operation in Crimea, as we would expose the eastern border and Ukraine would not be protected,” Turchynov said, as Crimea prepares to vote in a referendum Sunday on becoming part of Russia.

SEVASTOPOL/KIEV (Reuters) – Ukraine’s government appealed for Western help on Tuesday to stop Moscow annexing Crimea but the Black Sea peninsula, overrun by Russian troops, seemed fixed on a course that could formalize rule from Moscow within days.

With their own troops in Crimea effectively prisoners in their bases, the new authorities in Kiev painted a sorry picture of the military bequeathed them by the pro-Moscow president overthrown two weeks ago. They announced the raising of a new National Guard to be drawn from volunteers among veterans.

The prime minister, heading for talks at the White House and United Nations, told parliament in Kiev he wanted the United States and Britain, as guarantors of a 1994 treaty that saw Ukraine give up its Soviet nuclear weapons, to intervene both diplomatically and militarily to fend off Russian “aggression”.

But despite NATO reconnaissance aircraft patrolling the Polish and Romanian borders and U.S. naval forces preparing for exercises in the Black Sea, Western powers have made clear that, as when ex-Soviet Georgia lost territory in fighting in 2008, they have no appetite for risking turning the worst East-West crisis since the Cold War into a military conflict with Moscow.

Diplomacy seemed restricted to a war of words. …………….

Though I don’t have any connections to/in this part of the world, it seems so wrong, and underhanded, for Putin and his henchman to be able to walk in and lay claim to Crimea – even if there are Russian speakers wanting to be annexed. I also ask myself, if these Russian speakers are blind, deaf and dumb to want to align themselves with Russian governance. Bobfr, I do not understand the world, much as I don’t understand the Republicans who vote republican.

There is something seriously in need of repair in the US media – especially those who report on the WH – they seem to think Russian aggression is good – yet the President appearing in a comedy show – to promote health care for the US people – is bad.

There is nothing on this earth that the WHPC has ever got correct. They praise Presidents for going to war, Governors for being corrupt and congress for doing nothing – while misinforming the people to the extend that 47% think up is down and religion is science. Just sad

George Bush was comedy because of the stupid – apparently that’s acceptable. PBO using comedy is way above the mindset of the WHPC – their lack of a sense of humor is astounding.

Takeaway from FL seems to be that a half-hearted Democrat, wishy-washy on Obamacare WILL be wiped out by a Koch-sponsored assualt.

This seat has to be defended in November.
I’d hope we find a strong Progressive Dem.

Watch how the media spin this. They will call Sink a strong candidate sunk by ACA.
        Utterly 100% false.

If the Democrats refuse this spin and see that what is needed is More not less emphasis on ACA we will do much better.

This district (FL-13) has been Republican since 1983. The race was NOT a blowout for R’s considering it was a special election, and PBO only won by 1% in 2012 – a very high turnout election.

Furthermore, Alex Sink ran away from the ACA – she did not campaign on it.

Hey Vickie, here’s a tidbit I wasn’t even aware of, and I’m glad someone pointed it out: This actually suggests that the district as House Reps go, is getting more Democratic, not less..

            March 11, 2014 at 8:02 pm

But the thing that worries me is once again Dem leaning voters, who showed up to eke out a win for Obama there, did not show up in big enough numbers in this non-presidential election. I don’t know how to make it more clear to Dem voters that it is just as important to show up to vote in these elections as it is in presidential years. Vital.

            • 92 hopefruit2
              March 11, 2014 at 8:15 pm

The Presidential election is very different from congressional election. The congressional seat was LOST by the Democrat a whopping 15% in 2012, even when Dems supposedly turned up to vote for PBO to give him a 1% win over Romney in that district.

Today’s election actually represents a net movement TOWARDS the Democrats – not the other way around. The media is trying to confuse people by talking only about PBO’s win in 2012, while not mentioning the Democrat’s loss of 15% in that SAME election!

          • 93 Vicki
            March 11, 2014 at 8:21 pm

Yes, HF. We lost a R seat in a R district.
Fact still is as Dotster says below, we need enthusiastic D’s who can generate and encourage turnout.
Sink talked about “bi-partisan and reaching across the aisle.”
Corporate–Cuomo and Christie style and goals.

If dems don’t see a meaningful difference between the parties it is easier to stay on the couch come Election day.

Ummm…. “THE GD GAP” as you call it, raised wages for 65,000 workers in the United States after President Barack Obama challenged corporations, businesses, and companies to do right by their employees.

His visiting the Gap is a good thing because it will hopefully encourage other businesses to do the same for their workers and it will stimulate the economy in that people will be interested in what he purchased, allowing the Gap to make more money which leads to the hiring of more people.

  36. March 11, 2014 at 7:57 pm

    http://billmoyers.com/2014/03/11/report-on-cia-black-sites-and-torture-may-provoke-a-constitutional-crisis/ Joshua Holland

Three national security reporters in McClatchy Newspapers’ DC office — Jonathan Landay, Ali Watkins and Marisa Taylor — first reported the alleged snooping last week. BillMoyers.com caught up with Landay to get some background. Below is a transcript that has been lightly edited for clarity.

Joshua Holland: What are the allegations here, and who is making them?

Jonathan Landay: We’ve talked to people who have told us that staffers of the Senate Intelligence Committee determined that the computers they were using in a special CIA facility to review reports that were going into their study of the CIA’s now-defunct detention and interrogation program — that those computers were being monitored by the agency, in violation of an agreement that they had with the agency…

when it became clear to the CIA that the committee was asking for documents that they shouldn’t have had. Then the CIA went back and checked logs of the computers in this special facility — which is where the allegation that they were monitoring these computers came from — and determined that the staff had removed documents from this facility that they shouldn’t have had.

    ****************************

    Fascinating….

    bottom line according to Landay

the ability or the power of congressional overseers to oversee what is supposed to be a very clandestine, secretive agency involved in espionage.

    • March 11, 2014 at 8:05 pm

I must say…We do not have a Congress worthy of Oversight….

when you have dems who give into WR pressure and vote against the Presidents highly qualified nominee….when you have the GOP using a pattern of obstruction as a modus operandi….someone like Feinstein…creating a bruhal and distortions

you just wonder if they are capable of handling things of such a grave nature….

did you folks see this ‘behind the scenes’ story yet?

‘ I know traditionally you tape a lot for each “Between Two Ferns.” How much time did you really get with the president?
This one is pretty much what you see, is what you get. We did our usual process of Zach and I talking about what we were going to shoot, and then just did it live as it happened.

    Did he pitch jokes?
I don’t think the president has to pitch jokes, he just says jokes and we enjoy them.
    ~
Now that the video is out there, have you read any comments from conservatives saying it demeans the presidency?
I’ve seen some tweets about that kind of stuff. Like someone wrote like, “How does the president have time to do this?” And it’s like, how does anyone have time to do anything? The great part about it is, this president knows how to reach young people in a way that no other president has, and it’s very important that he reach young people with this issue. This is so much better and will attract so much more attention than him going on a Sunday morning show and talking about this issue when most people I know of this generation aren’t even up that early on a Sunday morning. The outrage about it is from a different generation, and the younger people really get it. ‘
