My heart felt for Ms. Alvarado, I could see when the tears started to flow. It was a touching and moving event.

Long overdue. Just one quibble … the ranks they’re being called is the ranks that they had when they won the MOH, but the ranks they have when they retired/left service are not those. It’s Sergeant First Class Morris, and Sergeant Erevia. ;-)

Chips, I’m trying to eat my carrot cake cupcake and I can’t because of my tears. I could look at these pictures for the rest of the day.

    *****************

Now I’m reposting something I said in the last thread. When I posted, you were all gone. It happens to me ALL THE TIME ha ha ha !!

On the “narrative” of the President’s weakness…

The reality is that America isn’t omnipotent. It can’t control the whole world. For a couple of decades it was the only superpower left, but this was a temporary situation. Russia has been getting stronger ( a bit) and China is becoming a force. Problem is that a good portion of Americans, and certainly the Villagers in Washington, refuse to see the new reality. It’s MUCH EASIER to use the President as a scapegoat. Oh he’s “weak”; if he was stronger Putin would be afraid of him.

NONSENSE. Economic sanctions could restrain Putin a bit, but the reality is that Ukraine can’t defend itself for long against a powerful russian military, and the USA and Europe won’t start WWIII in order to defend Ukraine and the russians KNOW IT. NOBODY in Congress would vote for bombing Russia. And very few americans would be willing to go to war with Russia.

    America, GROW UP !!!!!!!!!

Last thing: it may be true that President’s deliberations and “non-linear” path in his thinking/talking on the Syria problem created the ILLUSION that he can be indecisive. (For the record, I’ve always been convinced that we don’t know the whole story and that his “thinking” was made much more difficult by the evolution of secret negotiations with Iran, and also by continuous conflicting info about the situation on the ground in Syria .)

Curious though that every critic of the President these days conveniently forgets that when he asked Congress to authorize use of force in Syria, suddenly the war hawks weren’t screaming that loud anymore. In other words, President Obama called their bluff. They were screaming to President Obama to act “strong” but in reality they didn’t want to assume their constitutional responsibility. I doubt very much that President Obama wanted to bomb Syria; he used the threat only to make the RUSSIANS move, after stalling for two years. But the president wouldn’t have started a war without the approval of Congress. He believes too much in the Constitution. If we are searching for a man of STRONG character in Washington these days, President Barack Hussein Obama is the man. The vast majority of the political and media class in Washington are just a bunch of juniors compared to him.

It’s not “America” who thinks PBO is weak. It’s the beltway media and GOP who have been pushing this narrative. And the SAME ones pushing this narrative are ironically the same ones who claim that PBO is an aggressive drone-dropping, spying, Bush-like warmonger when it suits them. So the idea that PBO’s acts during the Syria crisis have caused the perception of weakness is simply not correct.

Yesterday ABC news omitted more than 50% of the facts surrounding the Crimea vote – if PBO was truly weak or perceived by the public as weak as they tried to frame it, they would not need to deliberately obscure the facts while almost cheerleading Putin. This is no different from the Republicans who used liars and paid actors to promote their anti-ACA horror stories. If ACA was indeed a horror, people would soon find out, and there would be absolutely no need for the GOP and media to LIE and manufacture false stories.

You’re right that it’s more the media and the GOP. But maybe I’m paranoid , I think at least half of America is very vulnerable to this type of thinking. The half who would have fallen in love with “macho” Christie if he hadn’t been destroyed by scandal. We can’t deny that there’s an important segment of the american population who still is gullible to macho rhetoric and wishful thinking. Who hasn’t understood yet that the world is changing and that the USA has to share power.

Given how corrupt the national media is, we see that a good portion of pundits who climb the ladder are either corrupted, or simpletons. They must score very low on the scale of moral development that Jim Stuart has been writing about. They value authoritarianism and absolutely don’t “get” President Obama. Yes they are for the most part insulted by President Obama’s unwillingness to bow to them so they’re eager to get back at him and constantly try to demean him. But I think what’s also at stake is their very unsophisticated, uninformed, simplistic vision of power and of geopolitics.

““We can turn the US to dust,” Russia says in 2014. “We will bury you,” the USSR said in 1956. They didn’t do it then, and they can’t do it now.”

    clip

“The West was not able to use similar strategies to pressure Stalin and Hitler, but the West can do it to pressure Putin and his kleptocratic oligarchs and officials. Due to militarization in the 1930s, Germans received well-paid jobs which in turn made it less feasible to arrange any sort of effective protest against Hitler. This is not case with Russia. Populations outside of Moscow and St. Petersburg are generally poor. That is the difference. They may not hate Putin, but they certainly hate the Kremlin and its corrupt regime.

Sanctions are not a fast way to resolve the situation in Ukraine. Currently Putin ignores them, and does not recognize the new government of Ukraine. Despite the sanctions, Putin submitted to Duma a draft of the law on annexing Crimea and Sevastopol to Russia on March 18, 2014.

Sanctions and economic pressure on the USSR led first to a change of the USSR’s stance, and then to its disintegration. If Putin continues his suicidal actions, his regime could collapse, opening the way for democratic developments in Russia. Putin has another option: sit at the negotiating table and agree with Ukraine to de-escalate of this crisis, under Western mediation in the early stages.

Only in this scenario could Russian interests be taken into consideration. Putin reiterated these interests in his speech to the Federation Council and Russian Duma devoted to the annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol on March 18, 2014. But Putin must not forget that further escalation and the use of force will only hasten the end of the Putin regime. Putin and his associates cannot stop history and set the world back to the Middle Ages. Both Ukraine and Russia will be important, integral parts of Western civilization, whether Putin likes or not. It is not too late for Putin to recognize this.”

I’ve posted the last 4 paragraphs of a long and detailed analysis, remainder here:

When Charles is on, he’s ON! http://www.esquire.com/blogs/politics/bill-kristol-war-weariness-031814

Just shut up and go away.

Can Republicans do no better than shamefully to emulate Somerset and Obama (“I assure you nobody ends up being more war-weary than me”)? Will no brave leader step forward to honorably awaken us from our unworthy sleep?
Blow me, you monstrous, bloodthirsty fraud, you silly, stupid chickenhawk motherfker who plays army man with the children of people who are so much better than you are, and who would feed innocent civilians in lands you will never visit into your own personal meatgrinder to service your semi-annual martial erection. You and the rest of your cowardly cohort helped prepare the ground for the worst geopolitical mistake the country has made in 30 years. You fought the battle of the Green Rooms and the think tanks while other people’s sons and daughters died for your fantasy of how the world would work if you really were the pimply, adolescent Zeus you see when you look in the mirror every morning. The country does not need you lectures any more. The country does not need your counsel. The country does not need your advice. And, as sure as human beings have become dead because of your lectures, and counsel, and advice, human beings about whom you otherwise care nothing, the country does not need your hectoring that it has become insufficiently bellicose to fulfill your newest, blood-drenched fantasies. Even here, even now, you hide behind the skirts of a woman from Indiana who, while I believe her to be wrong, seems to be genuine in her beliefs. You are unworthy of her intellectual camouflage.

He’s not done yet. Read the rest. I feel this way about ALL the RWNJ’s that bang the drums of war with other people’s children….while they see their stock portfolios gain because of the MIC they sit in the sandbox with…..they are wretched excuses for human beings.

Can’t believe I just got a call from the campaign for Co. Sen. Mark Udall——-asking for a donation. I’m in Illinois. If I could, I would send off big bundles of cash to all Dem candidates, but my name is not dotster Koch. It does sound like he’s in a tight race, they sounded like they were all in a dither, polls tied at 42 or something——–and this is one of the races targeted by the RNC and Koch’s Americans for Prosperity——-they are flooding the market with ads. I see one of the new ads running is a copy of the “I am Mormon” PR ads which ran in prep for the Romney campaign. This is a “I am a Republican” ad, with a rep from every minority participating. Going to air it, show it everywhere. Played well to focus groups, they say.

Did you mean “with an actor/actress representing every minority participating”? I would almost bet that these people are ‘starving’ actors.

“Putin, unlike Hitler and Stalin, handles Russia as his own commercial enterprise. That is why his motivations are very different from Hitler’s and Stalin’s. Hitler and Stalin had world dominance as their prime directive–Hitler on behalf of the German nation, Stalin on behalf of the global Communist revolution–without taking much notice of the population of any nation in the USSR. Putin’s prime directive is unlimited personal enrichment, cloaked in declarations for domestic ears about Great Russia, Russian World, Third Rome. That is, Putin’s similarity to Hitler and Stalin is only superficial. Putin and Company need the world for personal enrichment purposes first. Unlike the Communist Politburo of the Soviet era, the oligarchs and top officials who surround Putin, who are controlled by him and the FSB, do have personal property and bank accounts outside Russia. In addition, a share of the Russian stabilization fund is in US papers, outside of Russia. This is a huge liability.

All they have in common is a paranoid belief in conspiracy theories and a thirst for world domination, playing the chauvinism and imperialism cards in order to distract their populations from domestic problems. This allows Putin to maintain his kleptocratic and totally corrupt regime. Putin’s regime is far more vulnerable than Hitler and Stalin’s were.”
