The Day Finally Comes

Mary Morris helps her husband U.S. Army Staff Sgt. (Ret.) Melvin Morris, a Vietnam War veteran, with his uniform as they prepare to make their to the White House on March 18. Melvin Morris and two others are the only living soldiers who will be honored with 21 others today at the White House by President Barack Obama with the Medal of Honor. Excellent, Bill R! Is your sister-in-law an Oregonian? The state OFA director in Oregon is looking for personal stories to share.

So glad I didn’t miss it. I’m always so late. Stayed up to do a little research into my Dads unit in WWII to see if he served with anyone, but couldn’t make a connection. But I guess the Army was segregated then. :’( I hope the families are comforted in small way by this Honor.

Thanks to ACA my son will have coverage for his Type I diabetes. He’s not getting low rates because of income, but he can get covered!

Howdy all you O’s!!!! It’s a great getting up day again in TODdytown!!!

So I lurked the last thread and saw the ACA article that was posted on the Orange blog. It really is a must read. Then I came across this one by a diarist who’s been tracking and projecting ACA sign-up numbers all along. This one appears to be his final projection diary, with only 2 weeks to go. He’s been on the mark so far and it too is a good read. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2014/03/17/1285575/-ACA-Signups-Yay-Me-and-Yes-6M-6-5M-or-even-7M-are-possible

Now off I go to enjoy today’s sunny 50 degree weather, vote in the primary races, run a few errands, and get ready for the snow in the forecast for later this week.

Where’d you find 50-degree weather?!?! It just climbed above 41 degrees in my neck of the Chicago north suburb woods……..

I’m hoping that CSPAN covers it too. The corporate cable networks have a tendency to either make snide commentary while people are trying to watch the event, or cut away at the most important segments.

That’s a great idea Judith. We need to get some good news out about ACA, instead of the lies and misleading stuff from the Koch Brothers. There are filthy rich Democrats out there, why aren’t they putting forth good news ads about the Affordable Care Act.

  12. 31 anniebella
    March 18, 2014 at 1:15 pm

I can just imagine how the Koch Brothers would have fought Social Security and Medicare the same way they are fighting Obamacare, with lies and false ads, and they would have lost like they will with Obamacare.

      March 18, 2014 at 1:43 pm

This is absolutely the truth, AB. There were Koch-like people around when SS was introduced, which is why the first version didn’t allow minorities or women to receive SS. As deeply flawed and restricted as it was, it was bitterly opposed by people and many refused to sign up. Same old, same old. It took time and unrelenting commitment to make it work and that was with a Democratic congress!!!

I am just so thrilled for these men receiving their Medals of Honor today. The only sadness is that it took too long for the majority of them to be present at the ceremony. I cannot even begin to imagine the emotions the three living men and families are feeling today. The families of the others will be feeling great pride.
Sadly, once again, we are reminded of what a great scourge racism has been in our country.
Bravo to these men today! So glad it is President Obama who is the one to make the awards.

More garbage from Clinton to further embolden the “weak” meme.

A Tougher Hillary Clinton Distances Herself From Obama
The former secretary of state’s comments on Russia and Crimea suggest she’s trying to create a foreign-policy buffer ahead of the 2016 campaign.

In recent weeks, as the standoff over Ukraine escalated, Hillary Clinton did something that she never did as secretary of state: She put considerable distance between herself and the president she served loyally for four years. While Barack Obama cautiously warned Vladimir Putin to back off his claims on Ukraine, Clinton rolled out a rhetorical cannon, comparing the Russian president’s moves to the seizure of territory by Adolf Hitler that set off World War II. Her comments were so harsh and controversial that she was forced to walk them back a bit, saying, “I’m not making a comparison, certainly, but I am recommending that we perhaps can learn from this tactic that has been used before.”

Clinton’s remarks appeared to be an indication of two things. One, she’s concerned enough about shoring up her reputation for toughness that she may indeed be thinking about running for president in 2016. Clinton offered up, in other words, a rare and enticing hint about the question that everyone in the politics game is asking these days. Undoubtedly she knows that the effort she led as secretary of state in 2009, an attempted “reset” of relations with Russia that included a new arms treaty, now looks naive in the face of Putin’s repudiation of Obama over Ukraine and his lack of cooperation on other issues, such as resolution of the Syrian civil war. Two, Clinton could be worried that by the time the next presidential season rolls around, what was once seen as one of Obama’s stronger points—foreign policy—could easily become a liability to whomever is seeking the Democratic nomination.

Fools and the foolish who prattle on about them ….

We are fractions of a meter away from full scale war in Ukraine and the reality that none of them know what will happen this Friday let alone what the status of humanity will be in 2016.

      • March 18, 2014 at 1:34 pm

        THIS.

I can’t stand how everyone is second-guessing this situation, which is most fragile and volatile and fragile at the moment. Sitting in the Situation Room is far different than attending fundraisers and yakking on TV.

        March 18, 2014 at 1:49 pm

Clinton is making a grave mistake, if this is true. I can’t even give one thought to 2016 right now, but people had better find a stronger candidate to hang our hopes on if Hillary continues to alienate the Obama coalition. Nobody, but nobody should be “distancing” themselves from the president at this critical moment of crisis. If she had said that we must all pull together and support our president right now, I would have had respect for her. She’s already caving under GOP talking points.

        • March 18, 2014 at 2:00 pm

AGREED. Instead, these self-serving politicians are killing each other to get to the microphone to bash POTUS in the middle of tough negotiations. My, how things have changed in the last 6 years. Disgusting.

          March 18, 2014 at 5:04 pm

I am with you Jackie G! If Hillary wants to distance herself from the President, I am ready to distance myself from Hillary Clinton come 2016!

          • March 18, 2014 at 10:41 pm

I worry that Hillary will overcompensate on toughness due to being a woman potentially running for CIC in 2016. I also think both Clintons go for whatever best gets them votes ready to switch sides/views when it profits them.

I wonder how much of this is HRC and how much is media hate on the President – probably 50:50
The pundits can’t help themselves – stupid statements like “by the time the next presidential season rolls around, what was once seen as one of Obama’s stronger points—foreign policy—could easily become a liability”

President Obama was elected to MAKE PEACE – that is what people wanted & that is still what people want. All the war mongering by the usual suspects – egged on by the media pundits – “lets have a big war – good for the ratings” is designed to attack the reality that people do not want war.

got this real stupid post by a friend on facebook. Has Obama picture with words: “We can’t afford to fix our bridges and roads, blah, blah. But we can afford to send billions to Ukraine.” I’m half the mind to ask this idiot if she knows that when it comes to infrastructure it takes congressional approval and isn’t something the president can do with a snap of his pictures. I’m thinking of blocking her after giving her a piece of my mind.

      March 18, 2014 at 1:41 pm

You are right to be pissed off Jeff. Also, perhaps you should send the “friend” the various articles/videos of PBO talking about fixing our roads and bridges, as well as the infrastructure bill (that would accomplish just that) sitting on congress’ desk because the Rethugs don’t care for it. Here are a few links to get you started…

      http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/washington/story/2011-11-03/obama-infrastructure-bill/51063852/1

      http://www.planetizen.com/node/67558

Tell the”friend” that unless he/she can show you exactly what the other side has done to assist with infrastructure spending (and sitting there blocking bills is not considered assisting), then it should be THEIR pictures above those words, not President Obama’s.

she’s an idiot… Not sure if I want to be friends with her because of her hypocritical views. For example she claims to be vegan because the cruelty of the animal slaughtering places. Yet she also believes in the death penalty. What a completely hypocritical view in my opinion. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

        March 18, 2014 at 2:28 pm

And, the media will also continue to tell us how “unpopular” POTUS. Overlooking the 17 mil views and the increase of ACA signups. The only reason BTF video got so many views is because of our “unpopular” President.

White House’s Top Pastry Chef to Leave Post
WASHINGTON — The first lady, Michelle Obama, is soon to lose her executive pastry chef, Bill Yosses. And she is partly to blame.

She has piqued his interest in the relationship between food and health, he said in a recent telephone interview, so the man who made the Hawaiian chocolate-malted ganache for the White House state dinner for France is now headed to New York with an aim to teach children and adults about eating better. In the meantime, he has given up his usual breakfast doughnuts for a smoothie made with apple, kale, spinach and ginger — from time to time.

“It’s a bittersweet decision,” Mr. Yosses said of his move to New York.

Hired by Laura Bush in 2007, when he was already acclaimed in New York for the raspberry and pear souffles he created at restaurants like Montrachet and Bouley, Mr. Yosses began moving beyond the traditional sugar sculptures and cookie plates after Mrs. Obama arrived at the White House. He was directed to make more healthful desserts, and in smaller portions, that were to be served only sparingly to the first family.
