La La land is so right, because people dislike John McCain because to save his Senate seat he has become a right wing radical conservative.

Nice selections. I’ve come to the conclusion that whomever is in charge of CNN (or most any other cable new organization) should be fired, or sent to a long course on “this is news, this is not.” Yes, sure the disappearance of flight 370 is a mystery and a tragedy. Round the clock coverage? Not necessary. Really, a 10 second “nothing new to report” or maybe a one minute “this is new” and then report all the other things happening in this world.

Great selection of toons, LP :)

From bottom of previous thread …

    Feel the BURN ….

“Russian stock indexes fell sharply on Friday as investors digested the impact of the sanctions on Ukraine. The rouble-denominated MICEX was down 3 percent while the dollar-denominated RTS index had fallen 3.6 percent.

Negative market sentiment was reinforced by warnings from ratings agencies Fitch and Standard & Poor’s. They’ve both downgraded the outlook for Russia’s sovereign debt from “stable” to “negative.”

On Friday, Visa and Mastercard stopped authorising point-of-sale transactions for Bank Rossiya, which is on the list of targeted economic sanctions leaving many cardholders in shops with declined purchases.

The sanctions against Bank Rossiya has raised fears that similar actions could be taken against other Russian banks, echoing US measures against Iran or Syria.”

Don’t mess with President Obama ….

“It’s clear that the Russian incursion into Ukraine has already come at a significant cost. If the conflict escalates and financial sanctions take a more serious, damaging form, market volatility is likely to worsen, and forecasts could be revised even lower.”

Good. This is exactly the economic outcome, PBO intended. It hope it’s the beginning of a long, hard slide with Putin landing on his bottom. Hope the next is IS sanctions on other Russian banks, especially as Russia continues to encroach on Eastern Ukraine.

They don’t understand the power of soft diplomacy. Sometimes you have to denounce, but some other times you just use empathy, smiles, friendship. Love can transform the world too. Because it changes hearts.

Authoritarian regimes are based on a culture of fear. Fear of losing control, fear of the people’s freedom, fear of life even. What better argument against fear than the wonderful dynamism and positivism of Mrs. Obama ?

      • 34 hopefruit2
        March 21, 2014 at 5:45 pm

The American media is as vapid as an ant’s ass. As you said LP2008, soft diplomacy is apparently completely over their heads – bloated with ego but very little else. For instance, I’m sure that very few in the media appreciate the significance of First Grandma Robinson being so visible on this trip. The Chinese value their elders as much as we value our electronic gadgets. Grandparents are not just for trust funds and nursing homes. By bringing an “elder” who is part of the family, FLOTUS is showing the Chinese that we too, value an important element of our lives that they value. That is how diplomacy is forged – by noting the things that we have in common with each other and developing mutual trust in that regard.

Americans are unduly impressed by guns, bravado (Putin style), sanctions, war, threats, confrontation, although they claim they aren’t.

AB, Farrow is turning into a true ass. How kind of him to suggest that FLOTUS put herself, her children and her mother at risk in another country. She is not on a mission for the state department. She’s on an excursion with her family.

I didn’t know what to think about this article—thought at first it was just another political partisan piece: Insurers predict price rises for health care plans next year, especially in states where there has been political opposition which has kept many people from signing up—–especially young people, who are key to ACA success. There does seem to be some issues in some states——need more people to sign up. I know no one wants to talk about it, and it is water over the dam, but the failed roll out really hurt——is still doing damage——still the butt of jokes etc., even from some of our friendlies. Hopefully all the PBO appearances and an all out effort by all will help attract more to sign up—–hoping there’s a lot of procrastinators.

    • 47 hopefruit2
      March 21, 2014 at 5:37 pm

The failure on the part of some to sign up for health insurance is not due the ACA rollout. That’s an easy scapegoat but its not reality. There have been concerted efforts by a variety of institutions, factions, organizations, to keep roll-out low and we all know who these entities are. Multiple Obamacare “horror” stories that are now being debunked, gross failure of the media to correct lies while spreading them and burying the truth (see Chuck Todd), Republican governors of red, purple and blue states who fail to participate in medicare expansion.

And it’s not that we don’t want to talk about it, we just don’t want it demagogued in the way that the media (including the Chicago Tribune who endorsed MITT ROMNEY for President) has been doing. Medicare part D had a problematic roll-out, yet it was never the “butt of jokes” from anyone.

        March 21, 2014 at 5:53 pm

Yes, I am well aware of all the opposing forces and the complete failure by our news media to correct misconceptions etc. I just felt at the time, and still do, that the roll out gave huge ammunition to those who were already adamant critics and geared up to oppose, file lawsuits etc. And every late night show made jokes, made it seem like a failed govt. program, which turned off many potential buyers from the git-go. There are promising signs, increased enrollment as of late—–so am hopeful all of the probs will not matter in the long run. And isn’t it interesting that the people who will be hurt the most are most likely to be in the red states where their governors have done everything possible to put up roadblocks? People need to learn the diff between who hurts them and who is trying to help——and to stop voting for the Repub nutjobs who have no interest in their best interests.

Yes, but that’s NOT the fault of the ACA – it’s the fault of the people who are willfully ignorant and lazy to get factual information about serious matters.

You can’t fault the birth registry in Hawaii, or President Obama because some people refuse to believe that he was born in the US based on crap they got from FOX News, NBC Donald Trump, or RW websites!

                  March 21, 2014 at 7:41 pm

Indeed COS. ACA jokes are as “funny” as teleprompter jokes and they are not coming from a good place.

        • 55 hopefruit2
          March 21, 2014 at 6:01 pm

Seemed more like the media engaged in group-think with regard to the ACA website; doesn’t mean that they were right about it. As we all know, around the time of the ACA exchange rollout, the GOP had just suffered a humiliating loss with the gov’t shutdown, and the media and others were DETERMINED to make the ACA a losing proposition. The shutdown was the result of PBO’s failure to abide by the GOP’s request to delay the ACA. So of course, it’s only natural that they would exaggerate and over-hype the “problems” with the website.

Also I will add that If someone is getting serious information from a late night comedy show program, then they deserved to be fooled and manipulated. There were MULTIPLE ways that people could get informed about the ACA – not just via the website.

Oh, and the Chgo Trib endorsed Obama for president, just like they did in 2008. The Trib is no longer the conservative paper of old.

        http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2012-10-26/news/chi-obama-endorsement-chicago-tribune-20121026_1_president-obama-barack-obama-tax-cuts

They may have endorsed Obama but they lean Republican and are not friendly to the ACA in particular. I have read many of their articles Also, the fact that they endorsed Willard for the GOP primaries (knowing that he was going to be the one running against Obama) tells me everything I need to know about the Chicago Tribune.

Loved the Facebook/NSA toon (I bet the conversation actually went something like that :-) ),

    Which reminds me..

The other night I was flipping through channels and I came upon a C-SPAN2 replay of the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board Hearing on the section 702 portion of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). This dealt with non-US persons vs. US person’s data, how and what is collected, etc. The group of legal/privacy experts asked excellent, albeit somewhat repetitive, questions and the answers given by the panel from NSA were very clear and informative. The hearing is still available for viewing by anyone on the C-SPAN2 website.

Now, I understand that this hearing was somewhat dry and boring for the average TV viewer, who would probably click past without bothering to listen (then promptly tweet about “privacy”) but my question is this: why aren’t the people whose job it is to report on important news watching and reporting on this? I have not be snowed by the Snowden/Greenwaldians since the beginning but even I learned from these hearing that the data collection, even of overseas persons, is much less than I thought. In addition, President Obama has directed the agency to bring their practices of foreign intelligence gathering affecting non-US persons more in line with the legal protections afforded to US persons, which are extensive and pretty specific. If news media would simply report on this hearing and what was asked/answered, most people. both foreign and domestic, would be relieved and reassured.

Instead, we get punditry, “2016” and 24/7 “where is the plane?” coverage and late-night comedians continually rehash “the NSA is peeking at your Snapchats” jokes, so the average viewer believes myths and rumors as reality.

I saw a t-shirt for sale on Wireless that reads, “The NSA is keeping tabs on your paranoia” I think I’ll order it.

One of the lines in Between the Ferns from Zach was why he doesn’t have a cell phone, remember: “I don’t want you guys reading my texts”, and very smoothly PBO said, “nobody cares about your texts, Zach.” That aspect of the interview/exchange didn’t get any response at all, that I could see, but it was actually very pointed and PBO was very direct. He wasn’t attempting to throw dust in anyone’s eyes, or cover up NSA activity, I felt he was just stating what many of us know to be true: nobody cares about your texts, in view of the surveillance and the stats on metadata.

        March 21, 2014 at 6:58 pm

To add to the humor, I text a lot with one of my brothers, who is so convinced each and every one of our messages is being read, he deliberately puts in curses and shouts that he KNOWS they are watching and listening… Methinks he may have given too much thought to Big Brother!! I don’t bother trying to point out otherwise, as he is actually a very smart man, just a bit hysterical at times! We love our brothers, tho, even when they are a bit nutso!

    • March 21, 2014 at 7:41 pm

The Facebook and Snowden toons were my favs!

RT (Kremlin mouthpiece) reports that Zuckerberg and Google’s Eric Schmidt met with President Obama today. Let’s hope that both Schmidt and PBO gave cry-baby Mark “creepy Facebook” Zuckerberg some lessons in reality.

      http://rt.com/usa/obama-white-house-tech-meeting-449/

“Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg and Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt will meet with United States President Barack Obama and other top tech figures at the White House in Washington, DC Friday afternoon.”

      • 65 MadameSoph
        March 21, 2014 at 8:34 pm

I personally think that Zuckerberg knows better; he just wanted his customers to think he’s cool and also wanted to distract from the attention finally being paid to private data collection. “Look over here! I’m being real stern with the President; be sure to share/like this with all of your friends!” The funny thing is, any corporate entity that is interested in Facebook customer’s habits/info merely has to pay Zuckerberg for it and it’s theirs!

People are watching their stuff. Many folks fly.

In 2003, a plane left somewhere in Congo with 2 on board and thus far, Nothing was ever found. Since it happened less than 2 yrs after 9-11, there was No 2 weeks wall to wall coverage. But 11 yrs out…..and with 239 people on board….the Media is on over-drive.
